This is my opinion if you have a problem with that that's fine but please don't slag me for thinking someone else could have done a better job.
Ok I know the movies out and I know they can't and won't change actors unless something bad happens but I reckon Michael Sheen who played Lucian in Underworld would have been better. I looks better, he sounds better and he would have been great. And he's Welsh! If they'd looked a bit harder they would have found him to be better. Him or Stuart Townsend.

Actually, Sirius isn't really ugly. In the books it mentions that in the wedding picture, Sirius was actually handsome, but barely recognizable as the same man in the wanted poster. The only reason he appears ugly is because of all that hair, being ushaven, and not getting to bathe or bush his teeth very much.

My only gripe on this one is that Sirius and Lupin all looked 'too old" for the part. Arent the characters supposed to be in their thirties only? Yet the actors who played them looked well into their fourties and fifties. I just find it difficult to picture them having fun with James Potter in Bk5 by the lakeside as teenagers. I hope someone else would play them in Bk5 as students.
Is all.

I don't understand what you were saying? Do you mean that Alfanso isn't a good director? Well...I think he's a good director and I think Gary Oldman did a great Sirius! And of course he wasn't so handsome when he had spent 13 years in Azkaban (and Alfanso wanted to make him look scary....like a murderer)!! He will get more handsome in the next movies!!
And one more thing...Ewan McGregor wasn't in The Lord of the Rings!!

Ewan McGregor was most certainly NOT in the Lord of the Rings. Ok, maybe I didn't know that it was actually HIM singing in Moulin Rouge, but I DO know my LOTR cast members, and trust me, he's not anywhere on there.
You might be talking about Viggo Mortensen who plays Aragorn aka Strider.

Well, I did like the way Gary Oldman played Sirius, but he wouldn't have been my choice for the part. I wanted someone younger and cuter. Stuart Townshed would have been a good one, but someone else too. I wanted Colin Firth, but only because I've been in love with him since Bridget jones' diary. I think he's so hott and such a good actor. But I don't know if he would have been right for Sirius, but I was pulling for him, until I found out who DID get the part. Then i went out and rented the Scarlet Letter. (well, watched it on cable anyway)

No probs!! I just felt I
had to share the delicious Gary Oldman with everyone...although I would have liked to have seen him greased up a bit more in the movie myself.
Before I saw the movie, I kind of imagined Sirius as being either like a greasy version of the Rev. Arthur Dimmesdale in 'The Scarlet Letter' (I actually printed out a pic of him in that role when I heard he'd been cast as Sirius and used it as a bookmark when I read OoTP - 'cos I'm that sad

) or maybe Jackie Flannery in 'State of Grace'...
Although Norman Stansfield-ish from Leon would have been cool too....

Mmmmmm, for the most part these young girls *plays the over-20 card* just don't get the inherant beautifulness that is Gary Oldman *umm....apart from in Hannibal...>.<*, do they Dana?...I useta have this gorgeuous poster of him when I was about 15, black and white, of him leaning against a doorway smoking....ahhhhh.....
*ahem* I digress.
I really think he was an excellent choice for Sirius, I squeaked for joy when I heard he'd been cast, and I wasn't at all disappointed...it's been said much before, that there aren't that many actors who can portray the ambiguity of Sirius' character as well as he does...and I strongly agree with that...
The idea of Stuart Townsend...could that have stemmed from his performances as Lestat, and as Dorian Grey in Leauge of Extraordinary Gentlemen? Ohh he looks glorious with long hair, doesn't he? But not really right for Sirius...no....
And as for Michael Sheen...I kind see your point...quite the vampiric route though, isn't it? Lookswise, he's equally good as Gary Oldman, but acting wise, I'm really quite doubtful that he would have been so good...
Louise

is an older persons thing (hee-hee...do you think the hormones change or something once you hit 21?

) I don't know...
Sexiness is not equated with good looks, you see, peeps...it's that certain je ne sais whatsit (it's been nearly ten years since I passed French!!) that makes a man sexy, and let me tell you, Gary Oldman exudes it by the bucketload....so does Alan Rickman (not as Snape maybe, but as Harry in Love Actually, or the Sheriff in Robin Hood), Patrick Stewart, David Thewlis, Anthony Hopkins, Tommy Lee Jones...maybe not absolute stunners in the way that Colin Farrell is, or Josh Hartnett...but let me tell you, I'd choose Gary or Alan any day over Colin...even with that irresistable Irish accent of his...

OK, maybe this is just me... I'm a huge Tim Roth fan.. and as much as I love Alan Rickman, Tim Roth is and always will be my Snape. Rickman makes him quite.. elegant. Snape shouldn't be that smooth.. he's nasty and mean and PO'd at the world. So.. I just keep hoping that one day Alan Rickman will say no more... or that I'll wake up and Planet of the Apes will never have happened.
Who would you re-cast (if anyone)? Am I alone in the Tim Roth thing?
I'd also love to see Billy Connolly in there somewhere.
Louise

There's an official Alan Rickman fanclub around here you know, and you're gonna get yourself ripped to pieces when they see what you've just said....

**chuckles**
Nah, I'm afraid there has always been and will ever only be one Snape for me and that's Alan. I simply could not see any other actor doing what he does with that role...certainly not Tim Roth. He's just not even in the same class, IMHO....If Alan ever quit, the HP films would just lose all credibility for me....he's irreplaceable - one of the very few actors that can be said about.
And Billy Connolly!!!! You can't be serious!!

The guy can't act his way out of a paper bag!!! Not to mention the fact that he's deeply unpopular over here in Britain at the moment for making some extremely insensitive supposedly comical quip in one of his shows about the execution of hostage Ken Bigley earlier on this year.
No, sorry....just can't see him doing any role really....other than possibly Mundungus in OotP....he might be quite good in that.

hmm... all right, I'm alone then.
Now see, I don't *want* the raise the ire of the rickman fan club... and as far as I'm aware, I never said anything bad about him... so, hopefullly... that won't happen.
*shrugs*
To each his own, I guess. More Rickman for them, more Roth for me.
I agree that no one else would do what he does with the role. He's made a Snape. I like that Snape. In my mind however, Snape just isn't as.. I don't know, dashing, as Rickman makes him. Rickman is better looking that Tim Roth. I respect them both more than I can say as actors.. I'm just particularly fond of Roth's baddies. He does bad with complexity. Both Snape and Draco are a lot nastier in the books... that's all I'm saying.
Both actors are incredibly talented. I'm not saying one is better than the other. So.. if Rickman were to quit (wasn't there buzz? I don't know.. I'm not hugely into the harry potter news circuit) I don't think it would lose credibility (for me, anyway). We swapped Dumbledors and moved on... albeit under different circumstances, we're on our third director..
It's a big franchise... it'll be seven movies by the time all is said and done. That's a long commitment for an actor. My mind is open to the possibilities of different approaches to the characters. I like seeing what actors do with established characters to make them their own.
This was my first post here, I'm not Anti-Rickman. I'm not secretly in the basement sticking pins into a little Alan Rickman doll in front of a Tim Roth shrine or anything.
A friend of mine desperately wants johnny depp to be snape. And for a while, she wanted keanu reeves. *shrugs* Everyone is different.
And as for Connolley... ehh... he makes me laugh. Like, late at night, punchy laugh... I didn't know about the controversy (or.. the present controvery anyway). Dude just makes me laugh.

"makes him 'quite'...elegant"... are you nuts...Mr Rickman is one of the most elegant and zealous actors i have come across.
i must say though Roth may of been able to just pull off Snape...but come on! Rickman, the smirk, the voice, "the nose"!...its inevitable Rickman's are man and i do hope he stays till the end.
i think they could of got a better Hermione Granger, dont get me wrong the girls brilliant she really is a star and i hope she makes it real big and i want her to stay in the movie for the rest of the time, but she's just 'too' pretty!! i think they should of given her like some false teeth that are real big to wear untill the 4th movie...just to make her a little more geek-like!!.

Yay!!

**claps hands** We agree on something, then!
Gary Oldman is undoubtedly a world-class actor, but I've sung his praises already so many times around here that I'm sure people are sick of me raving about him by now...

I have to pass comment on 'Romeo is Bleeding', 'Dracula', and 'Leon' though....undoubtedly some of his very finest moments.
I must speak up a little in David Thewlis' defence though....I had my reservations when he first announced because he wasn't really as handsome as I imagined Lupin to be....I know he wasn't supposed to be better looking than Sirius, but all the same....
Anyway, when I saw him in the role, his character just shone through and by the time I'd finished watching the movie, I suddenly found him far more attractive...
On a separate casting note though, I've just seen the scan of Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter....she's almost exactly as I imagined her, but they've made her seem quite pretty....I had in mind more of a natty 60's dresser with those long pointy glasses like Olive from 'On the Buses' used to wear.....
LOL...none of you guys are gonna have a clue who I'm on about there, are you?

No worries....it's a Brit thing.....
