have you ever noticed how in all the books, filch is awake wandering the corridors during the day and at night he is awake wandering the corridors too? when does he sleep? i'm kinda surprised no one has ever asked this before

I think Filch's job requires him to be alert most of the day and night. Can you imagine all the chaotic things that can happen in a magic school? (reminisce back to the effects of the Weasley twins' departure

)
Its possible Filch may be able to catch a few hours of shut-eye probably at the dead of night; 2-3 o'clock in the morning. The ghosts, and Mrs. Norris are his look-outs when he isn't available. But around 4-5 AM, he has to make sure the castle is ready for another school day.

Can't remember if Filch's age is mentioned, but I know my granddad used to sleep for like 1 hours in every 6. So it would seem like he was always awake

I agree with Tuitus. His job requires him to be awake most of the day but he probably manages to get a few hours sleep late at night. And as Tuitus said, he has look outs so they can inform him if someone is sneaking out after hours.etc.

I think we rarely actually see Filch himself wondering the corridors at night it is more often Mrs. Norris, who we rarely see during the day. Yes we do see him occassionally, detentions etc. However, we often see that he is only alerted at night when there is a load noise or he has been tipped off etc.
Although I might be wrong about this. Nice thoughts.

Filch is surely a vampire during the night and a "normal" human during the day... probably surviving with a powerful potion or something... XD

Easy. Filch doesn't sleep....
Obviously, he does. I think that Mrs. Norris does the work when Filch rests. It is a hard job to be the official twit of Hogwarts. Cats don't really sleep that much...as long as they aren't lazy.
Filch needs to sleep sometimes. He's only human, after all.

i dont think filch sleeps i mean, look at him, all those wrinkles cant just be from old age. The dude is always awake and when he isn't then ms.norris is out doing his job. I dont like him.

It probably is just Mrs. Norris patroling at night, and when the kids see her, they immediately think the Filch is close by. She's probably just there to make them think that. But then sometimes, like in GoF, when Harry's coming out of the prefects bathroom and Filch finds his egg, that's when you wonder if he ever sleeps. He just has sensitive ears and such...and wasn't he wearing pajamas?

Thought I'd bump this thread as my question is regarding Filch.
Why do you think Dumbledore would have had this man working at Hogwarts?
Ok I know Dumbledores see's the good in alot of people, maybe he knows something we don't but a man who is so keen to have students hung up in dungeons or whipped!!!
What good quality does Filch have?? (apart from not sleeping a great deal lol)

If Dumbledore sees good things [except that non-sleeping], then there must be something.. You can't say Filch isn't ambitious, he's always doing his job.. And someone who scares people can be really usefull, especially when he/she has a job where he/she needs to punish bad kids.. they'll think twice before they go out of bed at night etc.

I think, that when Mrs Norris is so alike him, he is not unlike she...People often get similar to their pets.
And we know, that cats in a fact sleep a lot, but in short periods and are it's very easy to wake them up. So Filch. Any wrongdoing makes him to jump in a moment, so it looks like he's been patroling all the night. Of course, Mrs Norris spies for him.

I always wondered why Dumbledore hired Filch. I mean, he's a squib so he's practically useless within Hogwarts. Perhaps Dumbledore felt sorry for him or something. I wonder if he ever learned anything from the Kwikspell Course...
