Just interested to know people's opinions on the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie coming out in July! Personally I can't wait to see how Tim Burton has done it because I think he is a fantastic director. Alot of people say that this movie will be nothing compared to the original but I'm not sure. I just think they'll be different. The older one I think is abit "twee". I think the newer one will be more surreal and "Tim Burtony" lol. I think that the newer one will appeal to a great age range than the original, especially with it having Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka - a great actor! Any opinions on this?

You should have notified a moderator before opening this thread. It states quite clearly in the rules that we are not allowing any individual movie/band/artist/TV show threads here unless they've been given the OK by a moderator first - the reason is simply that if we allowed people to open a thread for every film they wanted to discuss, this place would soon be overrun, hence we have the general movies threads which have been pinned to the top of the TV and Media forum, where this thread should have been anyway and where I'm now going to move it. You should also have checked the pinned masterlist in that forum before posting.
Please read the rules for the forum and make sure you understand them and contact a moderator via PM if you're having a problem with anything. You've had to be spoken to regarding the rules before, and if this continues, I'm afraid we will have to issue an official warning.
I'll leave this thread open for now, seeing as how this film is likely to generate a lot of interest with all the Johnny Depp fans we have here, but I'm not likely to be so generous in the future.

My bro's just posted me the link to the new, really long trailer. The film looks absolutely amazing.
Remembering vividly the orginal and the book, I can't wait to get my hands on a copy/drag someone who can cope with the lack of pride by going to the cinema.

This film should be great..I am told that it will be more like the book because Daul didnt like the first one..which is why Burton is doing it again to try and make it more like the book..I love the original movie it is my favourite classic..but I think this one will be just as good..Gene Wilder doesnt like the idea though..maybe he just knows Jonny Depp will do a better job than him or will do at least as good of a job..and he wants to be the only Willy WOnka lol

Roald Dahl, never liked any of the films that were made, he didn't like them being made into films, thought it took the imagination away, but this one does look ace. I can't wait to see if they make George's Marvlous Medicine (which was my favourite book of the lot i think) The Twits freaked me out.

I can't wait to see it. The background reminded me of the original, which is sometimes good. Johnny Depp looked sort of cool and scary at the same time. I thought he was hilarious in the commercials.

The new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory looks terrible. The Oompa Loompas don't look anything like the old ones. The first movie from the 1970's is going to be so much better. They shouldn't remake an already good movie.

Come on, dude. Johnny Depp!! Can never go wrong with Johnny Depp.
The first one with Gene Wilder was too...something, wasn't like the book (i've re-read it yay!) Roald Dahl books are really dark, charlie and the choclate factory was about selfish kids.
The oompa Loompas in the first film looked nothing like they do in the books, and the makers admit that. But I think that Johnny Depp will make a much better Willy Wonka than Gene Wilder did. I'm really lookin forward to this movie, in fact, me and my mate are going to see it on opening night and then get the HP book for midnight opening, can't wait!
Then again, every one is entitled to their opinion. But Johnny Depp!
I think Roald Dahl would like thid film cos he didn't like the other one.

i wouldnt really call it remaking the movie. its more like... making a better version from the book. i haven't read the book(yet), but i'm pretty sure this one is alot closer to the book.

Yeah, I agree. Johnny Depp is one of the best actor Hollywood has. And he really gives justice to what he portrays. As I've said before, we don't have to worry if it's Johnny. The casting director did a great job in choosing him...

I agree! I can't wait to see Johnny Depp play this role as I think he is really well suited to it because the character of Willy Wonka is supposed to be kind of wacky, and Johnny Depp is really good at playing wacky characters e.g. Captain Jack Sparrow!
When I've been watching the trailer though I'm not too sure about the child actor's, they seem abit wooden in the way they're acting. But I might be prooved wrong in the actual movie!

In my opinion some things cannot be transferred from book on to film. This movie looks...I dunno...a tad strange.
I read the books, a long time ago. And I know that this version of the movie will be closer to how Dahl wanted it to be. But it seems almost too odd. Johnny Depp looks scary. I don't think I am going to go see this movie in the theaters.
The original movie was a classic. I don't know if I will enjoy this one as much.

He was supposed to be scary though. I heard that Marilyn Manson tired out for the part of Willy Wonka but he didn't look evil enough so they cast Johnny Depp. Which was a very good choice I might add because Johnny Depp is the best actory ever and team him up with Tim Burton and the movie will be flawless!

lol, although Marilyn Manson is pretty scary, saw him live a few years ago, excellent i might add. Nah, Johnny depp is way better than acting i'd wager than Marilyn.

I have complete faith in Tim Burton's abilities, and I'm sure that he will make the movie great! And as Ygraine mentioned, with Johnny Depp, it can't go wrong! I've seen the trailer, and I think it looks great. I've been waiting for this movie for ages, and when I found out it was directed by Tim Burton, Johnny Depp was Willy Wonka, and that Danny Elfman was making the music, I was jumping off the walls

IMO, all movies that Burton, Depp and Elfman has worked together on are great, and I have no reason to believe this will be any worse.
I didn't really like the old one though... It might be because I didn't see it anywhere near the time it was released(it was released in the '70ies, right?), and I saw it in an English class two years ago. I hated the fact that the Oompa Loopmas didn't look like they should(orange, weren't they? *shudder*), and it didn't follow the book as I would have wanted it to. I know I shouldn't care about details, and that making a book into a film is difficult and all that, but I don't like it when they put stuff that never should be there in the films. That's my opinion anyway, many others liked the movie. I guess it's hard considering a film you've never even heard of before you were thirteen a classic... But again, that may be only me...
I'm looking forward to the new one though! Unfortunately, it isn't going to come to Norwegian cinemas untill September, so I won't be able to see it untill then

Instead of re-making a movie in which the main character (Willy Wonka, who cares about Charlie?) is already played perfectly, they should make a Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator movie. That would OWN.

What, am I the only one who thinks Johnny Depp looks girly? He's a fantastic actor (not to mention hot) but he does not look at all like what I would expect Willy Wonka to look like.
Now, I know that by this time "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is like in theaters and everything but I just wanted to post this anyway. Besides, I haven't watched it even though I really wanted to. The theater is too expensive. I have to wait until it comes out at this theater that only costs $1.50 per seat. But each movie comes out in this theater whenever the movie is actually coming out on VHS and DVD in stores. That's why each seat is only $1.50.

Hmm I dont think you can compare the film to the orginal, I think you need to compare it to the book, and I think the latest was more "true" to the book, the orginal- the classic, was far from true to the book.
I do think the first was a classic, and I do love musicals, I grew up on the first one, like most of us here did, so I do have a soft spot for that film.
But I think the new one is completly different, and im glad they didnt copy from the first film, it was very funny, and yes, Johnny Depp played Willy Wonka very well

Omg! Just seen it! It's fantabulous!
*slight spolilers for the film*
'A blueberry? I can't have a blueberry as a daughter? How will she compete?'
'You could put her in a county fair.'
I just cracked up at that, probably the funniest bit in the film, also the bit with the sheep 'I'd rather not talk about that'
Being from well...can't really say it here, a family forum and all, but i think the older ones will guess, that people from where i come are often called something to do with sheep. I think i might have put a rather vulgur twist on it....
I've been to a chocolate factory!

I loved that bit too! It made me laugh so much! Also the bit where Mr Salt was talking about his nut business and Willy Wonka said 'You're really weird' - that was hilarius the way he said it!
I thought it was a great film. It was so much closer to the book and the Oompa Loompa songs where better aswell. I think I'm going to buy the soundtrack to this film!

I think it's a good addition to the first movie but couldn't be a replacement.
Johnny Depp did a good job. The only other time I've seen him is In Pirates of the Carribean and if I hadn't known it was him I would never have been able to tell.
I liked how they showed the kids coming out of the factory.

There was this ginormous battle over whether the original "Willy Wonka" was better than the re-made version, and I really have to admit that I like the updated version - and not just because it was a Tim burton film that happened to star Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka.
I really liked the 21 Century feel to the movie - the kids were WAY better actors than the kids in the last movie, and really embraced their roles - I especially loved Violet's character being as snotty and bratty as she was. In the original, the children sang. I disliked that... a lot. Children shouldn't be singing for no real apparent reason. Neither should a grown man. The songs in the original made the movie seem like it was a million hours long. Or something to that awful extent. With just the Oompa Loompas singing, it made the movie more watchable. That fact that they weren't orange didn't ruin any affect either - in fact, for me, it made them (him) more enjoyable to watch.
And just like any movie he is in, Johnny Depp did an amazing job at making the movie quirky and different. A remake was totally unnecessary, and yet, people loved it because of his offbeat Willy Wonka. The flashbacks were a brilliant idea, to actually show why he's so messed up. Tim Burton is genius. The imagery in that movie was spectacular, and like I said, the acting was terrific.
I'm not saying the original was awful or anything, and I didn't mean to make it sound like I thought it was, because it wasn't. That version was really good...for its time. And I know its supposed to be "timeless" and all that, but... everything needs a good revamping every now and again, right?

I thought the new one was better than the old one. Not because of the visual effects but because of the portraying of the characters. I like the new Charlie much better, he seems much more fragile than the blond one from the first one and also, Willy Wonka is much weirder in the book than how it was in the first movie and Johnny Depp did an incredible job.
Besides the new one was made by Tim Burton, I mean, that guy could never go wrong

I
adore the new version. It's hard to pin down exactly why. Maybe it's because I have a demented sense of humor and this version is completely demented. Maybe because it is so innovative. I do think that the original version is closer to the book, but it is also a dated story--it needed an update. I think Tim Burton spent just as much time on wonderful things to look at, and yet he also managed to give more depth to the individual characters--they're more quirky overall. The only ones I found to be utterly bland and boring were most of the Buckets! I loved Grampa George and his negative quips, and Grandma Georgina's dementia. The rest of the Buckets were dull as paint.
As for Willy Wonka, he's a basket case, which is perfect! He's a candy genius who has willfully secluded himself for ages--of course he will be weird! I've heard people say Johnny Depp did a sort-of Michael Jackson-type character, which in many ways is true--weird asexual hairstyle, out-of-date, overly-fussy fashion sense. But he captured perfectly what guys like that can be like--they think the rules don't apply to them, that they have always been allowed to do things their own way and they've been a success, so it was obviously the right way to do it (even if that isn't true!), and they think normal people are the weird ones!
I loved Deep Roy as the Ooompa Looompas, with his funny hair and his goofy songs and dances. Maybe it's because I saw the 1st film as a kid and loved it, it's because I like this new version now--because I'm not a kid. I don't know. ??

But it was great!

The two are almost like completely different movies. The new one is a bit weirder than the original. The bit of childhood added is cool though. It would of been nice to hear Johnny sing (Just like the days of Crybaby).
The original was weird but seemed to have a more actual life feel to it. I seemed like it was somehow possible, unlike the new one which seemed to out of place.
Both were brilliant, but I'd have to say the original is my favorite, and I'm a Johnny fan.

sorry, but did you notice the old version had all the oompa loompas look the same? and they looked so weird and freaky...i know they're supposed to be weird, but what was that? green hair and orange skin? sorry, but that was just ugly...
the old version is completely flop...i mean, i didnt say anything before i watched the old movie...and the other day i watched it...it was a complete disappointment...and i'm not just saying i love the new one because its got Johnny Depp...who cares about the songs anyway? they arent even nice...
of course Johnny Depp was excessively pale, but who cares? it was Johnny Depp was brilliant (as usual) and did what he does best...play weird !!

...plus, it was Tim Burton's movie! it speaks just fine for itself! i really dont know how anyone could say they like the old one better...oh and, did anyone notice that scene in the old one where they get on the boat and cruise on the chocolate stream and the weirdest thing happens! there's a long time while everything goes crazy with screaming and shuddering and gross insects scaring the kids of something! it was so dumb!
honestly, doesnt compare! the new one's far better than the old one...there's just tiny scenes that make a huge difference...the scene where Johnny Depp says how and where he got Oompa Loompas...i love that part! never is a Johnny Depp and Tim Burton movie a let down! never!!!

I don't have a basis for comparison, sadly, because I haven't watched the first one nor read the whole book.
But I really loved the second one! I love Johnny Depp, I love the effects, I love the overall cast, the Oompa-Loompah dances, songs and everything. Johnny was just so great as Willy WOnka. I liked how sarcastic he can be.
But, although I loved him being sarcastic, I think he wasn't supposed to be. I've read some parts of the book and he's supposed to be jolly and happy, isn't he? I'm not sure coz I haven't read it all, though.
Anyway, my point is, I LOVE THE SECOND MOVIE!!! I LOVE JOHNNY DEPP!!!

The actor who played the original Willy Wonka gave me nightmares. Johnny Depp did a marvelous job. The Oompa-Loompas are alot better than the creepy orange things in the first one. It was also very cool to get into the Marvelous Chocolateer's mind and see how he ended up like that.

So , I vote for the NEW ONE!
