first topic yay!

Do you like the music in the movies?Do you think that they should have music from,'whats in',or not?post what you think here!!
highlander
yes john williams music is excellent music for Harry Potter. I do like it since I perform it. but I think he did a rather poor job in some of the scenes in the prisoner of Azkaban. just my opinion.
prongs2895
I love the music in Prisoner of azkaban specially a window to the past where harry and sirius are talking about living together.Plus double trouble thats at the beginig of the year feast. biggrin.gif
Jordan
Hey All!
I really liked the music in all the HP movies. I epecially like i the music in CoS and in PoA. It really gives you the sense of emotion or sensation the scene is portraying. CoS was good but PoA did have some music which didnt fit in with what was going on. But overall it was cool.

I love the music from the movies. especially PoA. A window to the past is AWESOME and buckbeaks flight is really good too. I would hate it if they had music from whats in. That wouldn't make sense and it would take away from the atmosphere of hogwarts.
lawks_fuster
definitely the answer to your question is yes! the sound effects of the films are just right. and even fascinates their viewers like us! i do like the sounds in PoA, in buckbeak's scene as well as the boggart scene. laugh.gif
guste
i realy like music from GoF... what do you think about it?

MOD EDIT : I've edited the netpseak. Please refer to my post below. Thanks.

I love the music from all three movies, but PoA in particular. The music is darker and goes perfectly with the "I solemly swear I'm up to no good" theme. My favorites are A Window into the Past, Double Trouble, Buckbeak's Flight, and at the end, when Harry fights off all those dementors.

But I hope that for Goblet of Fire, this composer - forgot his name - will keep some tidbits of the older scores. I was quite disappointed when I found out Williams wasn't composing this one...I guess we'll see what happens!
ashleigh07
His name's Patrick Doyle... wink.gif

And John Williams is credited under HP themes so rest assured there'll be hints of him in the score for GoF happy.gif

In regards to the PoA soundtrack, A Window To The Past is definitely my all-time favorite happy.gif It's so hauntingly beautiful...if that makes any sense at all tongue.gif

Can't wait to get me hands on the GoF one though...if the trailers are anything to go by, it's gonna be absolutely awesome too!! biggrin.gif
NickHilton
I hope they keep the theme tune, however maybe slight alterations. I imagine Goblet of Fire starting with the Riddle House so it they palyed that tune with a heavy undertone then that would work really nicely.
Nimbus
Well most the music in the first three movies was just music for a specific scene or music that was the theme of a scene..like the chess board music etc. The two actually overall 'theme songs' I hope they keep for GOF are Hedwigs theme and A window to the past. Hedwigs theme will obvious be in there, but im not sure about a window to the past. It was played a lot in PoA and is sort of the song for the idea of harry comming to terms with his past and learning things from his past so I think they would have it in GoF and further films, but maybe not sad.gif
PORTHOS
Patrick Doyle did the soundtrack for Mary Shelley's frankenstein and it was really good.

His style fits with the Harry Potter movies.
guste
does anybody know from where i can send music from GoF?

MOD EDIT : You've been told numerous times now...one-liners are not allowed in the forums!!
departed_soul
Can somebody help me out? I want to listen to the full Prisoner of Azkaban soundtrack online, but can't find it. AOL music has Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets, but the link for PoA isn't there. Does anyone know where I can find it?
Nimbus
departed~ you can try looking back through the news archives of VTM. They had a link to the site where the soundtrack is availabe for preview so if you look through the october news archives you should still be able to find the link.
derya
the sounds are great!! ı like them.. ı have first movie's cd and ı often listen it!
Jacquie
The Prisoner Of Azkaban soundtrack is top notch in my opinion. John Williams is an absolute genius, and the closing "Mischief Managed!" medley is wonderful. My favourites from the soundtrack are: "Mischief Managed!", "Double Trouble" (I love that inclusion of Macbeth - go intertextuality!), "Quidditch, Third Year" and "Buckbeak's Flight". He has a superb handle on the kinds of emotions that different instruments can stir within people, and I particularly adore his use of the upper strings - as I said, just a genius.

For those who do not know (who I'm guessing are only a fair few), John is the musical director for the first three movies and Patrick did the music for the fourth one. Now, the question is, whose work do you prefer more (notice I didn't say, 'Who did better?' because I know a lot of you will reply 'Both!1!!1!1!!!")?

I personally prefer Doyle's style better. It's so much more in-your-face, intense, you-feel-really-involved kind, especially the Hogwarts March, Quidditch World Cup (aww man, first the Irish fireworks song, then the intense Bulgarian theme with the drums), the beginning song (dun dun dun dun dun, violin violin), Potter Waltz (you really feel uplifted with this one), Myrtle's Song (naughty, with a bit of ballroom flair), and of course, the Hogwarts theme song (I hum this song so much that it's even become the soundtrack for most of my nightly dreams)!

Although I like some of Williams music (like the Double, double toil and trouble one), I feel as though it's so... subtle and soft? Like when Marge flew, you don't really laugh because of the background music, it's so... lousy. But of course, that's just my personal preference.
Urik Burik
I dont know!
They are good in diffrent ways. huh.gif
beauxbaton1000
John williams. Patrick is good but honestly, you cannot get "Harry's Wondrous World" out of your head! He's by far the best with the HP sound!!
Nimbus
I liked the music both the composers did in their Harry Potter movies, but if I had to pick one over the other I think Williams was better. The doesn't nessesarily mean he's a better composer but I think his music was more in touch with the story and the world of Harry Potter. While Doyle's music just sounded like another Hollywood movie score (to me anyway) Williams was different and had a magical tint to it which I thought was really nice.

ooh, can`t be dissing John Williams!? he`s a very talented composer..

i think that both johns and patricks work is good.

but i do believe that the theme songs that John provided for us, will forever be the harry potter music, like Hedwig's theme, and Nimbus twothousand.. and yeah..

I do agree though, that Doyle has that background music style.. the kind that leaves you in the front half of your seat..

i must say though, i really enjoyed that band that played at the yule ball!
Agent0042
I agree with both. They were both great in different ways and I just heard more of Doyle's work in Nanny McPhee and enjoyed it too. There was a lot of great music on the GoF soundtrack --- Quidditch World Cup, Harry in Winter, Neville and Potter Waltzes and I also enjoyed all of the vocal pieces, particularly Magic Works and Do the Hippogriff.

However:

Word to the max! "Harry's Wondrous World" in all its forms is the best. I adore it.
krisie
I did like both of them but i feel that John Williams adds Magic to Harry Potter. Though i did enoy the soundtrack to Goblet of fire, i was thinking the whole time ' where did the magic of harry potter go'. The first 3 soundtrack just felt different . I hope they bring back John Williams for the next movie.
Padfoot08
I believe that John Williams did an excellent job on the first three soundtracks, but I am glad that he wasn't able to do the fourth. We all needed a little break from the oh so serious instrumental music. Patrick Doyle delivered fun to the songs. The three songs that were sung, I would really expect to here in the wizarding world. If Mr. Williams did the fourth soundtrack, who knows what kind of music we would get.
Tigers Eye
John William adds the main magic and feeling into Harry Potter. Patrick Doyle was good in other ways but John Williams wins by far!
BUCKBEAKtheGIPPOGRIFF
Their styles are completely different.

Williams composes very emotional music. He is like a painter who uses a big brush, whereas Doyle "uses a thin brush", his music is more sophisticated.

I love both of them. But the Academy (Oscar) prefers Williams to Doyle...
Aslan
This is a very difficult choice to make because both composers portrayed different pieces of the Harry Potter world so expertly!

Williams got the magical feel right, all right!! All the glissando’s etc.
My favourite piece by Williams is Buckbeak’s flight. I get gooseflesh every time I listen to it!

Doyle, on the other hand, did a marvellous job with the arranging of Hedwig’s Theme by changing the time a bit.
In the graveyard with priori incantatem, that part where Harry sees his parents almost drove me to tears!

In the end, the composer-thing is very much like the director-thing:
The one builds the foundations and the rest builds the building.

But if I had to choose...

The Aslan’s Choice Award for best Harry Potter Music goes to

……………………………………John Williams for Harry Potter 1-3!!!

john williams or patrick doyle?? i prefer johns illiams. in my computer i have his songs. there are very beatiful.. about john williams i like "team song" and the sound track of harry potter and the philopher stone
Greger
Isn't it clear? As for me, John Williams and Patrick Doyle are both so fantastic composers that only Hans Zimmer can be treated as equal with them. We can't say which of them is better cause it's a matter of a taste. I used to think Williams'd be irreplaceable until I got familiar with a GoF soundtrack. it wasn't worse than it'd been in the first 3 movies. HP films have a great music theme. Each track's so characteristic and has a spirit. That's why music keeps that special atmosphere of the movie and play an important, even crucial role in each HP film.
Spencer Potter
Well I dont know, this is hard to say. Doyle did a fantastic job for the Yule ball and some other stuff. But Williams did pretty good sound to.. Like Hedwigs theme sounded more alive.. I guess.
Greger
I never forget when I first watched HP movie. There were some scenes where music played a crucial role. Firstly, when harry gets to Diagon Alley. Secondly, when harry gets to Hogwart first. I rememberd these exact scenes because of music, which is a rather rare phenomenon in my case. But then came the CoS and again the moment Harry and Ron get to Hogwart and this music...awesome!!! The PoA (from the music point of view smile.gif) is first and foremost a Buckbeak Flight (a masterpiece, trully!!!!) and Finale...great, great and one more time: GREAT!!! And then came the change of the composer, however it wasn't change for the worse. Few tracks od GoF rule and I hope this will continue in the future.
Capricorn
I've finally managed to get my hands on the GoF soundtrack! woot.gif Which of course means that I can now comment with a bit more to say.

I confess I'm prejudiced. I've been playing violin in symphony orchestra's for most of my life, so any composer who uses strings in his works properly has my vote! tongue.gif That would have to mean that I prefer Patrick Doyle, and in most cases it would be true - he is not afraid to use string instruments in creating various types of atmosphere. However, I cannot, for the life of me, choose between the two.

So what Doyle has going for him is the following:
  • He uses the strings section most effectively.
  • He is, in my opinion, the Master of Melody - his work is melodious above everything else
But, of course, Williams has this in his favour:
  • Hedwig's theme (legendary)
  • His PoA CD is one my favourite's out of my entire collection, all genres.
I could carry on about these two guys' HP contributions forever. Hedwig's theme, Double Trouble, Buckbeak's flight, Harry's Wonderous World, The Patronus Light from Williams and The Story Continues, Foreign Visitors Arrive, Potter Waltz, The Quidditch World Cup from Doyle fit so perfectly into my Potter world, that I cannot imagine it without these sounds. They are synonymous with the events they describe!

Who's the new guy - Hooper? He'd better be pretty darn good, or Yates will have to explain very nicely why he didn't get one of these two back... mad.gif I watch the films for two reasons - Alan Rickman, and the soundtrack. tongue.gif
Dominick
As an ex-music major, I can personally say I liked both composers. John Williams setup everything that is Harry Potter musically. The first thing you hear in the first 3 movies is his music - Hedwig's Theme. I think Doyle had a much easier time doing GOF. Although what he did was extremely difficult - don't get me wrong - He was able to take what Williams already put down and just make variations of major themes.

So my final saying is, they are both amazing in their own ways - but Doyle's was mostly a variation. To compare the two, you would have to compare other movies by the composers.
Sirius.James
Oh, definitely John Williams.

The music is part of what makes a movie really good. John Williams has made Star Wars, Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and E.T. better movies because of his music. I think he's awesome. He's the one who came up with the Harry Potter theme in the first place, and it's great.

I was actually really dissapointed when I found out that John Williams wasn't doing the fourth film. And I was still dissapointed when I heard the fourth film's music. It was good, don't get me wrong. I just think John Williams could have done a much better job. The music was a little boring, too quiet. I didn't feel much with it. As with John Williams, some of his songs give you goosebumps. But, maybe I'm being narrow minded, because I haven't heard much of Patrick Doyle's material. But, from what I've heard, I don't like it nearly as much. I like Hans Zimmer more than what I've heard of Patrick Doyle's.

No one could have done a better song for when Harry's flying Buckbeak in the 3rd film. happy.gif It's my favorite.

Lol, funny you should say that - I read once some reviewer (it wasn't a very acclaimed magazine tongue.gif) saying that you could only appreciate his Sense and Sensibility soundtrack (as in 'not find it boring') if you actually lived in the early 19th century. No wait, it only said 'if you lived in that time'. Hm, well, seeing as the reviewer's grasp of history evidently wasn't too hot, I ignored the warning and bought the soundtrack.

I absolutely love it! It could be called boring, I'm sure, but not in the context of the story. The music brings a fairly slow and less adventurous story to life! I mean, the main characters do... nothing. Nor do their suitors, really. Looking back, very little seems to happen, actually. blink.gif So how come it's such a brilliant story and wonderful film?

I think that, except for Jane Austen and Emma Thompson (who wrote the script), the only other person who could make genteel women's lives in the early 19th century seem meaningful and exciting, is Patrick Doyle. Drama is his style I guess. He also did Much Ado About Nothing, and I thought that was brilliant too. His music has a sort of undercurrent excitement.

I dunno, maybe Doyle is more of a Handel figure, and Williams ...Tchaikovsky? tongue.gif I'm thinking of the 1812 Overture - that's pretty adventurous. It has the same feel to me as, say, 'Mischief Managed' from PoA - on a slightly different scale, perhaps... blink.gif

Lol, I'm butchering all four of them now, aren't I?
missmugglebethany
i like both composers Hedwig's theme is my favorite. theres just something about it. when those first like 4 or 5 measures start playing you know Harry Potter will be next.

I liked what Doyle had to bring to GoF, it was refreshing but i really missed the orginal hedwig's theme. His variation, in the story continues was great(my cell phone plays that when it rings) but i really missed hearing that orginal song.

OK, I love what Williams does but his music tends to all sound too much alike to me. One night i watched episode 2 of star wars and fell asleep(i was really tired) i woke up and in that drousy state i actually thought i was hearing Harry Potter music. So i watched Sorcerer's stone the next night and they are really similar. all his stuff is like this. I guess if you got something good stick with it but too me his stuff sounds too much alike. I dont know i guess i just like them both.
mizz.malfoy
i realy like the music in the movies. Espacialy the theme song. biggrin.gif
Tim_Burton_fan
Of course... I love HP music!!! it's so magical... so amazing... I have the PoA and the GoF soundtrack... my favorite track is Buckbeak's Fly... it makes me feel special. Thank you John Williams... I hope that the new composer doesn't ruin everything.
Tim_Burton_fan
What I liked about Patrick Doyle was that he use more the violins... but he will never reach the music of John Williams his music is really magical
Amyrat151
I completelly agree missmugglebethany, Willams's music tends to sound to much the same. I'm not a big fan of him in PS and CoS, but I love what he did in PoA. My favorite piece from any of the movies is window to the past, it's so amasing. When I close my eyes I see great scottish landscape, it's perfect.
But I love Partick Doyle more over all. He also did Hamlet, the KB version. Which is kind of funny because I kept saying to myself "wow, the score is really awsome." I dunno I think he brought a lot of life to GoF, it's fun when it needs to be, dark, sad, scary, it all fits and highlights everything.
Radcliffefreek

I like Williams more. I like the starting background music in PS. Dolye is also good but i think Williams suites Harry Potter. Afterall, he created the theme music of HP.
gryffindorgirlie
I think the kind of classical theme for the music goes really well. If you think about it the whole magical world is caught in a old world so anyother music would not really fit. I also have alot of the soundtracks on my cell phone. Thats how sad i am!! lol
Aguamenti353
i loved the music that was in the first three movies. Theres that one clip and i guarantee if anyone hears it theyll know immediatley its harry potter. I think its the theme song.... "da da da da da DA DA....da!" lol but it wasnt in the fourth one sad.gif but i did hear it on the preview for the fifth movie, so hopefully they brought it back
ashleyywhoo
I LOVED the music in the movie, it's just excellent and gives a haunting, chilling tone that makes you just want to jump up and down with excitement while you're watch Harry Potter. Especially the opening theme, the one they play at every movie! Excellent! It was stuck in my head for a few days. It sounds so magical, it FEELS like you're entering the wizard world with them! Psh, without the music, I don't know what I'd do! biggrin.gif
Avram
Actually I think the GOF music was the best. Guess I'll have to see OOTP again. Usually I pick up on that. If you're right, that's one I missed!

May your next charm, be charming! ph34r.gif
crazy4u
Generally,I like the Harry Potter music. And I found the music of the 5th one really interesting. Different from the others.I think I like it the most.I can't describe it.I don't know, more joyful?
Seriouslysirius
I have always liked the music in the movies. It so well really magical i think it fits so well. With the whole feel of the films. I do thought the OOTP music was really intresting. I loved the up beat fight scene music. I have no complaints to the music at all really. biggrin.gif
The actual HP theme sends shivers done my spine when i hear it. It's got some kind of hidden power.
etphonehome
Some movie soundtracks actually move between films. You can't ever imagine hearing the opening bars of Harry's Wonderous World linked with anything other than Harry Potter.

I love that piece and also Hediwgs theme, but I think that every piece of music in all of the films has it's place no matter who the composer.
