After reading book 6, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, something occured to me. It would be great to have a Harry Potter based MMORPG (Massively Mulitplayer Online Roleplaying Game). EA Games has released many Harry Potter games(one for each movie, and Quidditch), but none of these games, in my opinion, do the Harry Potter universe any justice. Each game is beatable within a few days, the puzzles are very simple to solve, and the game play is that of the old Zeldas. Quidditch World Cup was even worse. I admit for the one weekend I played it, that I enjoyed it. But the lack of freedom you had in the game was infuriating. You could not control anyone but the Chasers, and what kind of Quidditch is that? Quidditch is a sport, and like any other sports game I would like to control my other players, not just 3 out 7. But that is not the point. The point is that if a really well developed MMORPG was created, Harry Potter fans would welcome it would open arms. Not just a half made, quickly put together game. Which it seems like the other Harry Potter games were. But here are my thoughts on how this could work. Bare with me that it is 1:40AM and I could be a little crazy at the moment. I would love to read feedback on my thoughts. Maybe if we had enough people interested, we could get this idea rolling through EA.

First off, like any MMORPG (World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XI, Everquest, etc.) there are different classes that you can choose from. Caster, hunter, warrior, etc. but within the Harry Potter Universe there are no such things. There are only witches and wizards. But the only thing that differentiates one wizard/witch from another are their abilities in different subjects (i.e. Professor McGonagall is an excellent Transfigurationist (not sure if that is real), Professor Flitwick is great at Charms, and the list goes on). So here are my thoughts on how classes will work:

1. Healers
-Have the best healing spells in the game for grouping and solo
action. Can heal players who have been damaged, or resuscitate
other players who have "passed out", cure minor poisons, mend
broken bones, and other such things that Madame Pomfrey would
take care of.
-some buff spells at their disposal
-some offensive spells also
-very high "mana" pool
-medium spell damage
-low melee power
-low defense
-low amount of hit points
2. Transfigurationist (I'm sure i'm making that up)
-These players have the abilities to turn objects into other
necessary objects. Such as turning a cup into a weapon, or
transfiguring their bodies for useful buffs or more damage. Such
as giving themselves gills to swim into the Great Lake. Or
transfiguring their enemies into something that will weaken them.
-has transfiguring spells
-has some buffs spells due to transfiguration
-also is equipped with some offensive spells
-very high "mana" pool
-medium to high spell damage
-low to medium melee power
-low defense
-low amount hit points
3. Charmer
-The Charmer has the ability to do buffs on himself or group
members, or debuff his enemies. He can use charms such as Accio
to summon useful objects. Spells that make objects bigger or
smaller, or to charm certain objects to act on their own will.
-has charm spells
-some buffing power
-some offensive spells
-very high "mana" pool
-medium spell power
-low melee power
-low defense
-low amount of hit points
4. Auror
-The Auror focuses his attention on offensive spells. His main
ability is to dish out massive amounts of damage, but he will
be vulnerable. He will not be able to take as much damage as he
dishes out.
-many spells for damage
-no buffing powers
-lots of offensive spells
-very high "mana" pool
-very high spell damage
-low melee power
-low defense
-low amout of hit points
5. Potion Master
-The Potion Master can make all sorts of potions for his own aid
or for his teammates. He can make health regenartion potions,
mana potions, strength potions, etc. He also has the ability to
make poisons and other damaging potions. But you have to "buy"
the supplies needed for these potions.
-uses potions for main damage
-some healing with potions
-some buffs with potions
-many offensive potions, with little offensive spells
-low "mana" pool
-low spell power
-low melee power
-medium defense
-medium amount of hit points
6. Animagus
-The Animagus is a person who has mastered the art of turning into
an animal of their choice. These wizards/witches can turn into
an animal (wolf, bear, stag, etc) to increase their melee damage.
These witches and wizards depend more on this melee power,
instead of spell power. He also has the ability to "taunt" a mob
of weaker defense characters. He is the tank of the game.
-shapeshift ability, and the taunt ability
-no buff spells
-little offensive spells, but has alot of melee abilities
-low "mana" pool
-low spell power
-medium to hight melee power
-low defense in normal, medium to high in animal form
-low amount of hit points in normal form, high amounts in animal
7. Magical Creature Handler
-The Creature Handler has the unique ability to charm or tame
magical creatures to do their biddings. They have the some spell
power, and the abilities to heal and buff their pets. These pets
have to be reasonable pets, like Skrewts or something. No dragon
taming or anything else illegal.
-ability to tame/charm pets
-healing spells for pets
-buffing spells for pets
-some offensive spells
-medium "mana" pool
-medium spell power
-low melee power
-medium defense
-low amount of hit points

Now we get to character creation and what not. I think each person can create their own student to attend Hogwarts. But the customization will be limited to things appropriate to Hogwarts. You won't see kids with pink hair walking up and down the hallways. After you create your student, you need to be sorted. This is where it gets tricky. Personally I think it should be random, so as not to have Houses like Gryffindor and Slytherin overcrowded.

The idea of "leveling up" is aslo another tricky idea. In the books, the only thing close to "leveling up" is moving up to the next grade. But taht only makes 7 levels, and I'm pretty sure that that would not work. My idea is that there are 70 levels to gain. Level 70 being the highest. Then at ever 10 levels you can move up a grade. For example, levels 1 through 10, you are in your first year. Levels 11 through 20, you are in your second year, and so on.

As for training, your spells get stronger by "attending class". You will have to go to the appropiate teacher to get your spells more powerful. Such as a transfigurationist has to go to Professor McGonagall, or a charmer has to go to Professor Flitwick. This process won't be anything where you have to go for like 30 minutes or anything. But like a 20 second cutscene, where the teacher teaches you the spell and demonstrates what the new spell looks like. Then I think there will be certain spells that you can learn from other teachers. Like certain spells from your Head of House that only the members in your house can obtain. Or something spectacular from Professor Dumbledore or some other teacher. I also believe that every class has to know a little of the other classes. If you read the Order of the Phoenix, you will see that each career Professor McGonagall presents to Harry has other classes he needs to master. Such as Potions, Charms, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and other stuff.

Experience points. Now this idea has been busting my chops for awhile. In the books not many of the students got to adventure like Harry, Ron, or Hermione did. But there will have to be added adventures for students, and certain creatures outside the castle to let you level up. Or certain quests to do around the castle. Like gather some herbs for Professor Snapes potions class, or send a letter to Professor Dumbledore. (quests are tasks given to you by lazy people)I'm sure the developers will think of something to let us "level".

Another pressing issue is the idea of PvP (plaver vs player). This is always hard for game developers to come up with. Someone gave the idea of different schools, and having an monthly Triwizard Tournament. But that idea would be shot down in heartbeat, due to the fact that the game is all about Hogwarts. And the Triwizard Tournament should only be yearly or every few months. I think that everyone should be able to duel each other in the hallways or so. That could be interesting. And then there could be like a Dueling Club in book 2, where you can have team duels or single duels with other players. That would be a more feasible solution to PvP in the world of Hogwarts.

Another thing they can implement is Quidditch. Which would work sort of like the World of Warcraft Battlegrounds. Where you go to the Quidditch pitch and queue up to be the next player on the pitch. Naturally there would be more than one game going on. When you get in you get to pick what position you want. First come first serve basis of course. But I think a lot of people would love the idea of playing Quidditch. Also as a prerequisite you would have to purchase a broom before you can enter the field. Or rent one from the school. There would be different brooms, for people who have saved up, and for those who can't yet afford that Nimbus 2000.

And those are my thoughts on a Harry Potter MMORPG. We'll never know if this idea could ever come to life, but I have given you my views and suggestions on how a game like this could work. Maybe if you guys are interested enough, we could write massive ammounts of emails to EA Games, JK Rowling, or Warner Bros. I would love to play a Harry Potter MMORPG, and from what I've heard from friends and read on forums, I'm no the only one. But I'm tired of seeing these crappy "online" Hogwarts or Harry Potter MMORPGs, that are just 2D games or message boards with different locations. Its ridiculous the amounts of crap you can find out there. Let's put an end to the world of useless online MMOs that are popping up everywhere, and demand a well developed Harry Potter MMORPG. So I bid you farewell, cause I've been writing this post for about an hour now. I welcome all criticism, and my email is jthn23@gmail.com if you have other comments or just want to discuss Harry Potter.
PineApple Loverboy
Basicially I love your idea, allthough I didn't read it through(I'm in kind of hurry here). It doesn't necesserily have to be online, I would be happy if one could just have more freedom, like in Morrowind.
Roonil Wazlib
i love the idea also, here is a thread at an mmo site that discusses it.

http://mmorpg.com/discussion.cfm/setstart/...51/loadclass/35

and here is a site that some screenshots were found

If you go to http://www.newpencil.com and click on Portfolio, then proceed to click on "Environments" on the new menu that comes up, you will see, many screenshots of a world they are developing for EA for the upcoming "Hogwarts Online".

but in a email the guy at newpencil said it wasnt for an mmo...
and there was supposedly an mmo for the hp universe planned but it got scrapped.

i would loooove to see this become a reality though, and there are really good ideas on that thread. i suggest your read it.

Yeah I think it would be amazing to have a mmorpg of hogwarts. I think it would be so fun and you would get to hang with other harry potter lovers. When I first thought about a mmorpg I heard that ther was one but it got scrapped and I was sad. But there could always be another one that they could try to make. Of course if they make a really really good one it would draw HP fans and others that don't read the books which would be great money. I would pay monthly to play one. I just wish that JK would suggest somthing like that. I got bored with all the games they make now cuse there easily beatable and they really don't have alot in common with the books or movies. Well they do follow but anyone whos played them knows what I am talking about. I just wish that someone would get the sense that all the HP fans are growing up and we would really like a game thats more complicated, less cartoonish, etc. well just a rant.
GoGinny!!
OMGosh! laugh.gif I love this idea. I used to play dungeons and dragons and I made a Harry Potter campaign where the players attended Hogwarts (I made schedules and a marauder's map and everything!), but rather than have classes, make a more customizable system.
You know how on Tony Hawk games you get points in different areas like vert, street, jump, etc? Charms, Trans., DDA, Quidditch, etc., instead. Then, in order to master the spells, you need to practice them. Each spell would require a different number of spell points to be acquired before the spell is fully mastered. The amount of points required would depend on the person's prowess at the subject it falls under and the difficulty of the spell. Spell points could be achieved by different means; private lessons with a teacher, practicing in the dueling club, or just plain hexing the heck out of all the Slytherins (Go Gryffindor!), and until the spell is mastered, the spell has a chance of failure.

The point pool system would be used to gain special abilities, such as being able to cast spells without saying the incantation (to increast the chances of hitting the opponent, legilimency (To increase chances of blocking a spell), Occlumency (fighting against N/PC's who could otherwise block your spells quite easily), gaining invisibility without a cloak (DD can; of course, this one would require MASSIVE points and only be available to Seventh years and graduates)

As for the plot, the students of Hogwarts could be more involved in the war against Voldemort (Of course, they couldn't be as involved as a member of the OotP, at least, until they graduate, and after that, they could get jobs which involve their area of expertise...who said an MMO would be limited only to Hogwarts??). Low level students would be focusing more on increasing their abilities and learning simple secrets of the castle; mid level students could be focusing on learning deeper secrets of the castle (and still increasing their abilities), and the higher level students and graduates could be focused on the war with Voldemort (being allied with whichever faction).

And of course there is the house competition. There would be people in each of the houses, don't worry about that. And to make sure that Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw are filled out, give those houses some special abilities; RC's could require fewer spell points to master a spell, for example, because of their intelligence. Hufflepuffs could have bonuses with the healing spells, etc.

Whilst at Hogwarts, a student could ally themselves to the various factions: the ministry, the OotP, the Death Eaters, or even start some sort of protesting group (S.P.E.W. or other such thing, for example) in the way people like Marietta (the pimply sneak from OotP) is allied with the ministry, or pansy parkinson and other slytherins are allied with the Death Eaters. These factions could make for some interesting situations, because no-one would know everyone who was allied with any faction. If anyone has played the Wheel of Time IV MUD, it would be similar to the race war between Seanchan, Shadowspawn, and Everyone else.

Of course, there would be side quests too; serving detentions, collecting Chocolate frog cards (if anyone has played the GBC version of SS, you know the cool possibilities of that!), field trips like the triwizard tournament (very rare occurence, of course; only once a year in real time), trips to hogsmeade and the stuff you can discover there... the possibilities are endless! Heck, the NPC's could really be PC's played by moderators... a student could do a fred and george and wreak mass havoc on the castle while the teachers have fun doing a sort of investigation which freaks everyone out (OMGosh, what if they think I did it! I was in the hall at the time!), just some psychological fun.

The setting could be during the first war with voldemort. We don't know when that started, but it gives ample room for the scriptwriters to make stuff up without messing up JKR's story.
Spider22
as long as there would be decent spell targeting i would like it. 1st person would be good.
TheChosenOne
i think a harry potter mmorpg is a great idea but i think it should be more focused on hogwarts but pupils are able to pick what occupation they would like such as healers, teachers, aurors, transfigurations, etc etc they start building skills towards each or they could touch on all of them. They complete all 7 years at hogwarts and can choose a stable occupation. Second part mmorpg is a continuation of the first one but it goes on into the real world where they have to fight death eaters and stuff... man this sounds more like a reg rpg than mmorpg XD but wouldnt it be nice if there was a mmorpg you could just beat?

AND PLZ not first person -.-
GoGinny!!
I agree, a first person would be too restricting. If anyone has played a D20 game (like dnd for example), or star wars knights of the old republic, the system for targeting could be very similar; a random number is generated, your bonuses (or penalties) are added, and if you hit, the little light hits the person, or if you miss it just goes flying by.

And of course, the programmers could think of incredibly good school plots. All they have to do is hire someone from bioware (who made Neverwinter Nights, Icewind Dale, and several other RPG's) to make some stories, and of course people from everquest and any other MMO's. Just hire the talent and let the fun role.
Kamikaze
Just play World of Warcraft

Hi there, please check out the rules here. One liners are not allowed on the vtm forum. Thanks Shane

This is about us wanting to play an mmorpg. We could go out and do that right now.(anyway WoW is boring. I had a couple lvl 55's and I just got too bored with it after awhile but still was a great game but I digress) What we want is a proper rpg of Harry Potter where we can create our own kind of players using there spells and such, with the online component of how hogwarts would feel. Having other people in other houses and having people in yours. competing for the house cup, quidditch cup, etc. I for one love the world that JK Rowling has created and would be very dissappointed if she and other writers who get her approval create more novels from that world. It just seems like a great plan for a mmorpg. I don't seem to have found any with a school base and mostly all using spells. Anyway....
DoubleDoors
An HP MMORPG would be easier to construct if they were already out fighting Voldemort, if you ask me ^_> Although incorporating Hogwarts would make for a great change in MMORPG style; it would be interesting getting quests from teachers!

The combat skills and whatnot are already there, experience points wouldn't be hard to be woven in somehow either.. I doubt EA would make it, but one can dream laugh.gif laugh.gif
Nimbus
I LOVE this idea man. I play an MMORPG called Tibia and I've often thought of what it would be like to play a HP based one.

I think the Hogwarts idea is cool, but I don't think the whole game should revolve around Hogwarts. In the game I play there is an island called Rookgaurd where all players start and have to stay until they reach lvl 8, then they can choose their vocation and go to the main isle. This insures its experiences players. I think it would be cool if Hogwarts acted as a rookgaurd. You go through your 7 years of schooling and then choose your vocation and you are then able to leave Hogwarts you can always return if you want, but it would be a protection zone so you couldn't kill anyone in the grounds.

Once youre out in the wizarding world you can hunt things like Giants, 3 headed dogs, warewolfs etc, for exp.

you can live in houses in the wizarding cities such as Diagon alley Hogsmead, etc.

I think it would also be awesome if there were guild type things too. That way all those who fancy the dark arts could join guilds in which all shared their intrests. And those especially gifted witch's and wizards could create a guild and dominate tongue.gif

All and all I love this idea. I wonder who you would have to propose it to in order for it to happen.
Spider22
travelling around the magic world by broom and fires would be cool. And you can go to hogwarts whenever you want to use the libary to get more spells.
GoGinny!!
That's what I was saying, solorund. It doesn't have to completely revolve around hogwarts. While a lot of fun is to be had there, you would eventually graduate, get a career, fight against Voldemort (as a member of either the OotP or the ministry) or with him (as a DE, or an ally of them). Plust there are a billion things you could do in the real world, getting even better equipment, amassing more knowledge of magic (DD is constantly learning more about magic), or just setting out to kill magical creatures. Of course, the ministry would be looking for you for that, but even evading capture would make a fun adventure!
Dark Wizard MK
Me and my friends spend ages talking about a HP MMOrpg.

The idea would be awesome. The Player vs Player. Guild Vs Guild - Wizard duels and Quiditch Matches! Represent your own country in Quidditch matches against other countries!

Book related missions/quests too.

My dream game! *_*

And to KamiKaze - Why? WoW is not HP. We want HP. See the differance?

Edit: I also like the Idea of it being in Hogwarts, and you can go to Hogsmaede and Diagon Alley and stuff. But I don't really like the houses idea.

Edit: It can POSSIBLY out do World of Warcraft.
Goodplann55
I think that they should make an RPG for the harry potter series
once book seven comes out they will have a very broad story line to make a game were you gain skills and certian feats

the game would span across all books starting from of course the first book up to the seventh

what do you think?

MOD EDIT: I have edited your post..please see posts below
Tuitus
Hey Goodplann55, welcome to Veritaserum!
I think if as long as they keep to the canon fact and don't stray too far with the usual RPG setups, I'd buy it. tongue.gif Do you mean just a console version, PCs or a system where people can interact with each other on the internet?
Could you alter you signature's image to 400 pixels across by 150 pixels wide? The page is being stretched and some visitors may have downloading difficulties.

yes Goodplann55 and as Tuitus said..your siggy was HUGE so I had to delete it because it was throwing off the layout of the forums...

also you have a minor netspeak in your post..u should be you...as we do not allow netspeak on the forums..please take a look at the rules so you know how things work around here..there is a link to them in my siggy

Harry Potthead
I was actually thinking about this recently. A HArry Potter RPG would be awesome for the computer. YOu could be sorted into houses, learn different spells and such from classes, explore Hogwarts as a tutorial area (like lvl 1-15 or something). Then you could go out into the Wizarding world and create your own adventures after the 7th book ends.
penheart
That would be great. You could choose to be evil or good and fight each other and stuff. It would be awesome for HP fans. E A games should make it too

What about this. You kill dragons and stuff and they drop things that you use for potions. You have to buy spells and you can earn money killing monsters or trading items with other players. You can buy stuff from diagon alley like stronger wands and sweets to boost your health in battle or thicker robes with special effects like 20% less damage caused by magical beasts or better cauldrons to make potions faster. You can sell ingredients and potions to potions shops and raise owls and things. Owls could send messages to other characters. You can save galleons for a house then you pick your side in the war and train and kick some dark/good/stupid/ wizards butts
paolopaolo
i absolutely love the idea!haha..i do hope that it would be a possibility though..id get really addicted to it!
Draco Black
I was thinking about it too it would be a really good idea for them to do that and i think it would sell really well. If they do it as like an online thing where people can interact with each other biggrin.gif
harry4_LyF
That would be awesome! An interactive roleplay! And then another one were you play as the trio on a video game or computer and you get to choose who you date, and you get job stuff and all that stuff!
Mercury7674
I must say this idea is great! I've finished all the HP games and there so easy. I want a more challenging, fun Harry Potter game, that I can play with friends online. Sounds great!

Mercury7674
Gallows_Pole
Imagine a giant battle full of advanced good and evil witches and wizards. That's what would happen regularely in a MMORPG based on Harry Potter. Not only that but you could team up with several people to go on a raid to kill all the dark wizards!
Nemesis
ok..your whole idea is great..

But ..just a quick question..have you ever played runescape?
its a free mmorpg/paying also

they have it so you can be whatever you want...and you could be them all...

i think if they were to come out with a harry potter mmorpg they should make it so you can level up in all things..it just takes more time..etc...and the higher the earned skills..obviously the better u are...take a look at rs and u will see what i mean

So here are my thoughts on how classes will work:

I completely agree with you!! i would love to see a HP based rpg like that. i have played WoW, and its awsome!! integrate Hp into the WoW sence, and youll get one, h-double hockeysticks, of a game!! i like your ideas too, but i think sony should com out with those types of games too, not just pc, and xbox, they can really make it worthwhile if sony tried. we have the technologies to send men to the moon, and robots to mars, and giant cameras to jupiter and saturn, and even send a giant telescope to other galaxies, but we cant seem to make the worlds most kicka** video game!! i dont believe one stinkin word of it, we ahve the tech support to do it!!

As for your PvP Problem, thats easy!!! there are three things you could do for this. One, the dueling club, two, the triwizards tournament, Last, an interhouse tournament<much like the triwizards tournament, only just hogwarts does it, between the 4 houses>. also, we can have raids, like go into the forbidden forrest, and raid the centaurs, or the acromantulas. there is another thing we have to do too. what about parties/groups, friendly duels, and and skills like, alchemy, and herbalist, or leatherworking/skinning, and, firstaid, cooking, and so on? also, as another thing, the order should be like the alliance side, in WoW. and the dark order, that is lv, and the des, should be like the horde side in WoW. also, all the students will have to go to moodys challenges and lupins too, in order to get the defensive spells, and snape too, since he is the dada professor in hbp.

another problem i cant get around, is how would the elite monsters like those in WoW, be. would we consider the CoS, an instance<dungeon>? if so, then the basilisk could be one of the elites. maybe the memory of tom riddle can be another. oh and the skewts, they can be one, and the dragon, the grindylows, the merfolk, and even the sphinx and boggart and the giant spider that was in the maze in gof. some more elites may include, draco, umbridge, filtch, and peeves. also, what about the world map? this shouldnt be limited only to the uk!! maybe all 6 continents in the real world, excluding antartica, because i dont think that is inhabbited by normal residentials. or, we could just do the uk, bulgaria, and france, where we have the 3 main schools in the wizarding world. of course, the last campaigne boss will be lv, and the subboss can be snape, or even bellatrix.
Prince
i love this idea, and i agree with the people who said it should be like tibia or runescape, ive played both games and when i did i always imagined that they could make a harry potter one, and you could star in hogwarts and doing classes to learn all the spells and you could go to the forbidden forest to fight creatures to level up, and later you could go to hogsmeade and when you reach a certain level you are graduated fron hogwarts and then you are up to whatever you want to do like work in the minister, being an auror where you are always in difficult quests.. well this thing could work very well and become the best mmorpg ever, better than tibia...
Field_Healer
I was thinking, Now for about a month, what if a MMORPG (Massivley Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) for the Harry Potter Universe was done. The Idea of that happening isnt that far fetched with how EA games are going (The Holder of HP Gaming License) and World of Warcraft (Very Popular MMORPG) getting more popular by the minute.

I see that it would be better if they made the RPG in James's Potter and Snape's Time where it would be possible to study at hogwarts plus fight LV afterwards.

And it'd be better if we had the choice to move on in years as in from year 6 to Year 7 and to choose which Career or Job to Take.

A Project of this size would need the supervision of JK Rowling in regard of the History itself and the possibilty of spells there, I get a warm feeling just thinking about it.

I wonder if any people would reply, due to the Rare mix of Video Gameing and [HP] Book Reading.

OH MY GOD I SEERRIOUSLY HOPE NOT!

Have you seen what has happened to Runescape? And other MMORPGS? People devote their ENTIRE lives to it. Runescape has people that play 20 hours a day and have done so for 5 years. It is BAD. Zezima, Choppermad, TON, etc. It's bad. I myself have wasted alot of time on MMORPGs. And that's all people would do. Waste their lives. People would get SOOOO addicted. I would get addicted, and everybody would love it but it would take over people's lives. People would drop out of school, quit work, PERFORM ACTS OF.. well nvm. But I mean jeez.. I would hate that, it would make me so mad because I just KNOW I would HAVE to DOMINATE IT! RAWR! And I'm not even that bad anymore... People would need shock therapy. You know? STOP IT BEFORE IT STARTS.

You really got to think about it.. It would be worse than crack.

Heh I play runescape, but, Zezima doesnt sit on it 24/7, its 10 different people from around the world on that account. Anyways, back on that topic. No I would not like it, I dont really like the games anyways of HP, they are totally different so no, that isnt cool for me. ph34r.gif

Lol Spencer I've been playing RS for nearly 5 years, I used to be well acquanited with the actual Zezima, his name was Timothy Majors. :-p And yes he did play about 18 hours a day while teaching a Social Ec class to HS seniors over the internet.

i really love to see a harry potter mmorpg and it should be like runescape, and i think its depending on you if you become an adict or not, i used to play runescape and never got addicted to the point of playing 20 hours and not going to school, its all about self control, so for me id like to see this game made
jarn
I applaud you for having such self control Prince however what I'm saying is there are ALOT, and I do mean ALOT of people who wouldn't have that type of control over themselves. It would be 10x worse than Runescape, people who ruin their lives lol.

I would like to see it made. I am not prepared to give up an amazing game like that because a bunch of other people will lose their social lives to it. It is their lives after all, and if they want to spend 20 hours a day on an mmorpg, then that is their right. As long as they are having fun, and enjoying themselves then I see no harm done. With everything you will have extremes... some say I spend too much time on VTM... to each his own is all Im saying. But a game that like would be so cool, especially if its done right. You would be able to get a wand, gather galleons, sickles, and knuts... join the Death Eaters perhaps... if this would be done right it would be very popular, and then it would be up to the individual to decide how much or how little they play. I guess it comes down to one of my favorite phrases: If it keeps kids of the street....

I also think it will only be a matter of time until a game like this is introduced.

Mmm...interesting perspectives here happy.gif

I don't think they should stop making it just because some people might get addicted to it. I mean, people should learn to control themselves. If we're talking kids here, then it's up to the parents/guardians to exercise a little discipline. If we're talking older kids/adults, then they're going to have to stop at some time or another to go to work and earn a living in order to be able to afford A) A computer, B ) The internet charges.

People can get addicted to anything given half a chance, but we can't go around banning things because it takes away people's right to choose.

Obviously, with things like drugs, it's different - people getting addicted to those can and do hurt and injure other people and so by making them illegal, it protects everyone. People playing computer games aren't hurting anyone except themselves.

So yeah, sure - if they want to make one, I wouldn't have any objections. I wouldn't use it, because I have a life (tongue.gif), but I wouldn't stop other people enjoying something like that if they wanted to. People use RPG's anyway, and that's not exactly a whole other world from MMORPG's.

As much as I would love to see one done, I dont think its possible really. There are so many things that would need to go into this game to make it functional, at least in my opinion. Youd have to include the dark spells, the jobs, Quidditch, PVP, economy, and all that other jazz. I dont see it all as implementable. Like, I would want to be able to use the Cruciatus and Killing Curses. There might be SOME ways they could get it all done, but that would be stretching the world a bit too much in my opinion.
jarn
Well those are good points, and I guess it doesn't really matter to anybody if people get addicted- those who would profit off of the game, those who would have fun with it, and those who would commit their lives to it. So it IS going to happen anyways, I just am saying I would hate to see it happen to people because it would happen to so many people. EVERYBODY on this site is addicted to HP. An interactive, status building sub-reality based around the HP universe? People would play it religiously. tongue.gif

I never much liked Runescape. Never played it either tongue.gif. But if they released this type of thing, I guess I would try it out smile.gif. Lots of possibilities.

I don't know if people are still into this idea or not, but me and my friend definitely are.

Regardless or whether or not EA makes a MMORPG of Harry Potter when the 7th book comes out, my friend and I decided to put our gamemaking skills to good use and design a free Hogwarts MMORPG.

We just decided on this a week ago after finishing our latest project, so all we have done are basic 3D physics on GameMaker, but the rest ought to be pretty basic. He's good with gamemaker, I'm the idea man. I was hoping to form some sort of Counsel Group for when we have questions that require answers from the common player (i.e. Do you like turn-based PvP or not?). The website should be up soon, but until then I thought I'd get some more excitement back into the issue.

The graphics are going to be similar to Runescape's, as we dont want to waste too much time on graphics and neglect the awesomeness of the game itself.

To throw out some ideas we already have out (and to get your blood going!):
- Student Years are going to be the only level system in Hogwarts, but once you're out of school there are no levels at all. You can, however, increase various skill points by practicing them (i.e. Potions, Transfiguration, Dueling, Cooking, Charms, Animal Taming, Flying with broomsticks of course, Charisma, Healing spells, Dark Arts, etc.)
- A completion of a certain amount of Teacher Quests will be required to move up in Years. Depending on how well you do in your quest, you receive certain Quest Points, used to purchase spells during the completion of that Teacher Quest, or special items for Bonus Quests (given out by non-teachers, like a Prefect in trouble, or a mysterious man in Hogsmeade).
- Learned spells will be activated by typing them and selecting the appropriate hand gesture from a chart. Mispellings and incorrect hand gestures could end in strange results!
- Moderators will play as Teachers, for a more personal relationship between students and teachers. However some teachers will be bots, so Teacher Quests will be available 24/7.
- There will be no classes, as the first post had suggested, so students begin with clean slates and can build their skills however they wish.

As you can see, most of the ideas so far (I haven't even listed a quarter of the brainstorming we've done) revolve around the setting of only Hogwarts and nothing more, so when the game is released into Beta it's just going to be that: Hogwarts. However, the next expansion would definitely include the real world, where players use the skills they built in school to get jobs and live their life.

Once again, this is just to gain some momentum for this project and get your blood going. Feel free to post some ideas you have for the game!

I think that would be a very neat idea! In most of the games that I played before seemed that they were lacking things here and there, but I do like how you can play with 3 characters instead of one.

I wouldnt really care if it was online id sorta rather have it yah more like morrowind that would be really fun. More freedom and more things to explore instead of haveing so many invisable walls to run into all the time.
TH3 CHOS3N ON3
I thought about this a lot and definatly would play it. I love the sound of going around the castle and messing with people and learning new spells making new friends. AWESOME.
TH3 CHOS3N ON3
I would play it hands down. Just the fact of powering up spells and messing with people all ovr the castle. It would be cool to have friends and do tasks together.
Filius Flitwick
I absolutely love this idea, however I think that it could just be a regulat RPG like most Final Fantasy games. But since we are talking about an MMORPG I will give my thoughts/ideas on this topic.

I like your examples for the different types of classes, but I think they could be a little more well thought out. By that I mean something like someone who specializes in defence or attacking. I think that the ones you named could be skills learned during the game, all though now that I think of it you have a good idea. It would be cool if your character could start as a wizard entering hogwarts. Based on a little personality quiz, you would be sorted and that will give you higher level points in certain categories. Hogwarts would be something like the tutorial stage that defines how your character will be later on.

After that you could choose if you want to join the bad side or the good side. On the bad side you could choose between being a death eater or something else. The good side you could choose to join the ministry (I'm putting them as good) or the order. All choices would help as well and have some negative effects. From this you could get different missions and other things, and you could also change your sides. It would be this huge online battle going on!!!!!!!!! Sorry, I just have soooooo many ideas. Alert EA immediately!!!!!

All of is such a great idea!
A Harry Potter Based MMORPG would be awsome, exploring the world of HP would be so fun with fires and brooms, and maybee flying cars. I liked the idea of Hogwarts being the sort of tutorial place.
All the players could have their own vaults in gringots, and their own keys ect. and money the big houses or small houses and brooms.
It would be great!!
We need to start a topic in the EA Forums and try to get this going, if you guys want this MMORPG then we better get naggin'

Nosgoth_Vi_Slytherin
That would be super aswome, like going to buy your own wand at Ollivander's, or take study at Hogwarts, and maybe in special events you win items from the founders of the houses, like the cup, tiara, etc, have special robes, win invisibility cloack. It would be aswome , more aswome that Wow biggrin.gif
