Perkins is a very old warlock who works in the missuse of muggle artefacts office with Ron's father, Arthur weasley. Now, as we all know, history of magic lessons are so boring that no-one listens. In one lesson about Giant wars, no-one other than Hermione is listening as usual but we hear Professor Binns murmur one word, and that word is Perkins. Now, JK Rowling doesn't usually throw things like that into the books by accident so maybe it has hidden meaning. Perkins is a very old learned wizard who may have a background with Giants and maybe he'll join the order and recruit some Giants. The Giants will come in very handy against Voldemort. Any thoughts on this anyone?

Good thought Shuntpike, that is a very good theory. I now think Perkins will go and check that out and will help us there. At least persuade the giants to NOT join DE's even if they don't help Albus.

perkins doesn't strike me as the type who would do that...but good theory

Well, he may have been in his younger days, but I don't think he can't and won't go to the giants. This is a very interesting point, but we must remember the new Gurg... he's not fond of Dumbledore...

that's pretty good idea yea i remember now that you mention it that the new gurg wasn't too keen on the subject of joining the good side.

I still think Arthur will convince him to do it. They are pretty close, it seems anyways. I hope he at least brings back a few giants. But then again, this could be like Mark Evans, a big coedinciidince (Spellin!).

Good theory alex, but i dont think it will happen that way.
that is a good theory. i think that the giants will join dumbledores side in future books.

Why do you all think this? It says in the 5th book that golgomath and most of the other giants liked the death eaters. And the ones who were on hagrids side were raided in the caves so would they want to join Dumbledore now, it doesent seem likely to me, i think the giants will be on the dark side, not everything can go the good way, i think JK wants to show that not everything goes right for Dumbledore and that voldemort can maybe achieve victory. Of course we know that he wont but in the future books i think there will be a part were all hope has faded and the hour of doom seems at hand. lol...Then something will happen....we'll have to wait and see.

I think the only reason Binns said 'Perkins' in OotP is because he's so oblivious he didn't know Harry's name and called him 'Perkins' instead of 'Potter'. I mean, maybe there's more to it, but I don't think so.

I think it's a bit far fetched but it's a good theory...

That would be very interesting if it could be that way.
LordMuggleBorn is going on about how the Gurg doesn't like Dumbledore, and he has a good point.
Do you think Hagrid and Madam Maxime would try again, persuade them, and then have Perkins go after them? Just adding to the theory.

It wasn't really a huge, thought about theory of mine, it was just a thought of my friends. And i think that if the Order go back to the giants with better gifts, then they could persuade the giants to join them. Also, maybe most of the giants are just scared of golgomath, and maybe he will be killed and the new Gurg will want to join the Order. I don't actually think the giants will join the Order, it was just a thought.

Good theory, no doubt --
but I think it was just a coincidence he called Harry, Perkins.
It's plausible 'cause Prof. Binns is so lost, not to mention BORRINNGGG.. he's certainly in his own little world.. he's a ghost ain't he?

But I don't see why anything from Perkins' schooldays, that Professor Binns would remember, would relate to him being any use in trying to recruit the giants, to be honest...Like, what, he was good at saying Ug?

That is a very good point, 'Shuntpike'!
When Professor Binns said that name, I did think it was familiar. But if Perkins, could get in contact with the giants, why is he working in the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office?

I always thought that when Professor Binns says Perkins, it is just showing that he really isn't plugged into life. He doesn't even know the names of his students. I thought Perkins was probably the name of a student from a really long time ago, when he was young, and that Professor Binsn just hadn't learned Harry's names. You are right, however, that JKR doesn't normally throw stuff in for the fun of it. It is a good literary aspect that adds to the realistic nature of the plot; however, it is certainly possible that it is more than that. That is a very good point. The only thing is, like others have said, the new gurg was favoring the death eaters. I wouldn't normally think Perkins will have a ton of importance, as he is an old man with a low-paying job. But, same names aren't usually a coincidence in the Harry Potter series. Whether it shows that Perkins will end up recruiting all of the giants or not, I think it could definitely have some importance. Good job picking up on that.

Wow...I didn't remember this up until now. I do sort of agree with Potter4President about Professor Binns just oddly calling Harry "Perkins" But also, if I'm not mistaking, the giants are mentioned later on into the books.... But Voldemort has beaten the good side to the giants by giving them gifts....Does that sound right???

I agree. Plus i strongly believe that grawp is going to have a part in hte fianl battle for revenge on hagrids death if it happens. he is not well trained as we see at the funeral.
