I searched the forum and couldn't find any threads on Dobby, though I may have missed something. Please redirect me if I'm wrong.
One of the funniest parts in "Prince" for me (seriously, I was laughing out loud) was when Dobby stuck out his knobbly little fist and knocked Kreacher's teeth out.
It's also interesting that it's been three years and Dobby is still having trouble with his self-punishment habit, and that it may be more so as he is spying on his former master's son. Also that Dobby seems to consider Harry his "unofficial" master (if that makes any sense) and that Kreacher still seems to consider Mrs. Black his mistress even though he must take orders from Harry.
After all, Dobby did tell Harry he would throw himself off the tower if he failed. Now that's true loyalty right there.

Yah, that part when Dobby goes all kung fu on Kreacher was hilarious. It is ironic, the house elf that belongs to harry despises him, yet the 'free' elf would kill himself if he ever failed Harry, even though he doesn't belong to him. If only Kreacher had be that loyal to Sirius...

I Love Dobby! He was super macho house elf in HBP! What really got me though, was Peeves yelling during the fight.
"bitey bitey. scratchy scratchy" hahaha I was rolling and have re-read that part many times for a laugh!

Dobby is the greatest house-elf. He does seem to be the abnormality amoung hose-elves though.
Winky was ashamed when she was freed and she turned into a drunk.
Kreacher was so loyal to Mrs. Black that even after she died she was his mistress and he only wanted to serve her family i.e. Bellatrix Lestrange, not Harry Potter! He wasn't a pureblood.
All of the Hogwarts house-elves were so insulted by Hermione's attempts to free them that they stopped cleaning the Griffindor tower and Dobby was the only one who would touch it. I wonder if Hermione could have freed them as she didn't technically own them. They were Hogwart's house-elves... any thoughts?
It was strange that even after three years of freedom Dobby tried to punish himself after speaking ill of his former master. Of course we don't know how long he had served them or even how old he was. I wonder how long house-elves live? It would make sense that Dobby was still punishing himself if he had served them for about 60 or 70 years.

Yeah...see this is where I get frustrated. I really hoped to learn more about House Elfs and their powers. I was SO sure Dobby would have a hand in some fighting. I mean come on! harry could have summoned Kreacher to sacrafice himself dor DD after all! Even better...had they had time, they could have summoned ALL of the Hogwarts house elfs to fight the DE. Man...that would have been way too cool.

I picture Dobby as this adorable little thing and seeing a lot of the fight Death Eaters. Thats just a funny picture.

Since Dobby is taking orders from Harry, that would mean that he is Harry's house elf right? Dobby is the comic relief next to the Weasly twins and is the light in the darkness. Kretcher is a abused elf that has no choice but to obay Harry's orders.
By the way Snapelover, I'm with you on that!! (laughs histarically and starts crying he is laughing so hard)

whatever happened to dobby after? what will happen to him in the next book, will voldemort kill him? will kreacher kill him? harry never exactly told him not to harm anyone, and we seen how much kreacher hated him in the elf tails chapter, when he got in a fight with dobby, and dobby knocked half his teeth out, so it seems like dobby is capable of makin enemies, plus, lucious malfoy hates him, so does draco, hes got awhole sleu of enemies, and now that everyone knows voldemorts back, and hogwarts is no longer safe, voldemort might move in, and take it ver, killing all the hoouseelves that dont agree with him, and seeing how dobby is friends with harry, he would be a prime target.

Dobby is very loyal to Harry and i think he would be of some use to harry in the seventh book as well..but i was curious about one thing..(but this is off topic)..would kreacher lie to harry again?would he betray him the way he did with sirius? when the two house elves came to harry with the report after spying malfoy..kreacher praised his "so called young master" and harry told him to get out...harry did what sirius had done before in Ootp and what you think..would kreacher go back to malfoys with any of harry's secrets? just let me know please

I was wondering what happens to all the free house elfs? Not only Dobby…
They get a job? They have money? They don't live with the wizards.
I mean..I never saw a baby house elf..Are they immortal?
They have a family?

I think that free house elves would be more like sevants. They would work for pay, have holidays? I don't know about baby house elves, JK never talks about them when they are young. They must breed though.
I don't think House-Elves are immortal though, we saw the heads in OotP. I don't think they die of illness, but of old age, or accidents like everyone else.
I think that througout all the books, Dobby has been totally awesome. He was one of the coolest creatures in any of the books. !

I totally agree with all of you that love Dobby. I think he is one of the characters in the books that is mainly there for laughs. I love in the fourth book i think it is, when dobby says that Dumbledore wants to pay him more, but dobby won't allow it. He is the cutest character in to book, and my favorite house elf.
I also think that dobby is a great friend to anyone. Dobby always helps Harry with anything, and always has his back (like when he was fighting with Kreacher.) Plus Dobby always takes care of his friend winky!!

dobby is amazing...i never assumed him to have such a huge role in the books (before i read all the ones after the secong) but he's just such a cutie pie, and i love the way he talks...and dresses...and makes constant suicide threats...but i just wish he was given a biggre part in all the movies.

I really wish that Dobby had a bigger part in the movies. I mean we all know that Dobby is amazing, and his role is so funny. For any of you that have seen once upon a mattress, he is like the funny broom guy that never talks, and all he does is follow around the princess that sprinkles floweres. Dobby is important, but is really in the story for humor, and i love him dearly

i really wonder how they do the last couple of movies, dobby was really important in the boooks, but not in the movies so he either has to make a hige sudden comeback or they have to completley rewrite the malfoy manor scene and a bunch of other stuff i can't remember

See, thats what i always thought too! They "belong" to Dumbledore, so i thought the clothes wouldnt really affect them would they? But then i was thinking... maybe they belong to Hogwarts not just Dumbledore, so maybe if they picked up any clothes in the castle, they would be set free. But that still doesnt make sense because Dobby picked up all the clothes and he wasnt set free!

! But maybe they stopped cleaning it because they were offended by any clothes, even if they didnt set them free. Do i make any sense?

lol.

I think Dobby i one of my favorite characters! Hes sweet, loyal, caring, fun... i just love him! He's so loyal to Harry and anyone who shows him kindness. I just love him! I dunno what else to say! lol, maybe i think of some more things later...

Too right RebelRoseGirl. Dobby in his finest hour. He's just such a lovable character from the moment you meet him. You want to give him a great big hug because he's so unloved. PLus, he differs from other house elves because he's learnt what's right.
PS, there's a garden centre near where I live called Dobby's. Either the owners are HUGE Harry potter fans or they are called Robert and abbreviate it....

How cool?

I don't know if Dobby's garden Centres are all over the country but there's one not far from where I live too. Although I doubt they bnamed it after 'our' Dobby, I still like to pretend that the owners are huge HP fans!
Just looked Dobby's are a franchise, there are lots of them. Just imagine lots of Dobbies everywhere!
Sorry, I should know better going completely off topic like that. I should be burned at the stake!

Dobby is very brave. And always so helpfull.. I've just read the part where he dies, it was so sad.. I've heard a lot of people die in part 7, but I think Dobby is one of the people [creatures

] who really shouldn't have died.

I love Dobby. He was so sweet, loyal, and pure-hearted. He risked (and gave) his life for Harry. I've always loved him and gained so much respect for him, especially in DH. I was really, really, really sad when he died. I cried a lot and for a long time.
Rest in peace, little guy.

Sorry but, I guess I am by myself here. Dobby for me was another Jar jar Bink type of character to me. Yes, he did come through in DH. But, the self beatings & such gets played out real quick.
Maybe, because I saw Dobby in the movie before reading the book. But, he just got on my last nerve.
Yes, I did think that he was very funny when he & Kreacher were figthing. But, I felt more for kreacher in DH. & How they all finally came to terms with each other & he even started to like hermonie. & Then it is Kreacher who gathers all the house elve's into fighting in the final battle. Kearcher became loyal to harry & his fight.
I found kreacher's backstory much more heartfelt & sad, than Dobby's death. I felt bad about dobby's death. but, the moment did not move me like I hopped that it would.
Now, if you want to talk about about loving someone who was truly a sad charcter that you can't help but love. Even if they don't deserve it. Then SMEGOL/GOLLUM is the man . We was bad but, you couldn't help but love the poor creature.
It was TRILOGY Weekend on Turner Classics. & That was all I did on Sunday was watch all 3 Ring Movies. Started at 12:30 PM & finished at 11:30 PM( thank god limited commericals. Otherwise I would still be there watching the movies

I think Dobby is great! The fact that he was willing to die for Harry put him in my good books. I wasnt a huge Dobby fan in the second book , but he is just so sweet and loveable ive really come to like him. Although the way he talks in the movies does kind of annoy me

Dobby is my second favorite Harry Potter character, and he's just so enjoyable to read about, and such a funny character. In the seventh book, I cried my eyes out when he died.
We must keep his memory alive and all wear tea cozies as hats!

Just kidding, but Dobby is totally awesome, and no one (especially the movie makers who cut him out!) should forget him.
