Hey, I searched the
Suggestions topic under "shirts" and clothing", and both yielded no fruit. So I had an idea: what if Veritaserum.com made like t-shirts or mousepads or stickers or other little items they it could sell to help pay for the site.
I used to post a lot on
The Council of Elrond, and they did this sort of thing. They sold shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, mousepads, tota bags, and other stuff with like their logo on it. Maybe Veritaserum.com could do the same?
Here is their store at Zazzle.com and
here is their store at Cafepress.com if you would like to see the examples to which i was referring.

Hmm ... I don't think that this really qualifies as a suggestion that the mods can deal with, Accio Xbox. If I were you, I'd try sending Matthew an e-mail via the
feedback form -- he's always been quite responsive whenever I've tried to contact him that way, and this really would fall under his territory as webmaster since it doesn't speficially deal with the forums. That's about all I can say to you -- sorry that I can't be of more help -- but I don't like to leave suggestions unattended to.

Hey!
I'm very glad somebody has taken interest in the t-shirt idea. Silvermaster (one of our wonderful chat moderators) recently made a Veritaserum shirt design that some of the staff opted to buy. Matthew and I have since been deliberating on whether this would be a feasable idea to make site wise. As of now, everything is thought out and we're waiting for an "okay" from Warner Brothers with the design because, well, I don't really want to be sued at the age of 14. We're looking at a price of 15 dollars a shirt with shipping included. Our main goal is to give something back to all of the people who have visited this site, not specifically to make a profit. Any profit we would make would go into server costs.
If anybody else has interest in this idea, I would love to hear some feedback. I don't want to post the design yet because it has not been verified.
Thanks!

I'd thought I'd bring this up again since the craze from HBP has cooled a bit, plus I've been craving a VTM shirt like mad.
I noticed the poll way back when, and it looked like a fair amount of people would actually buy the shirt and/or merchandise, and I know the site takes quite an amount of money to keep up and running especially with the amount of growth its been going through.
Well, I brought it back up to the top of the suggestions, what more can I do?

Hmm..Yes, I would spend some money on VTM stuff. But maybe not a shirt. Someone might laugh at me!

My husband already thinks I am weird.

But...I would do it. I would IF and only IF....I can have one with Snape's face plastered on the front.

*lol* I am kidding, seriously...I am!

I'd wear a shirt. If it were a simple enough one- like the WB marauders shirt-
You know, something black (or alternative other single colour) with writing 'Veritaserum' on the front and 'Let the truth be told' on the back or something.
I think the more simple the better, because it means it can be put on anything and more people would wear it. I think it would be harder if you get too tricky, for starters printing it in the first place, secondly costs of it goes up and thirdly legalities of it all- as Matthew said earlier.
Nick
Oct 21 2005, 01:35 PM
Personally - I'd be proud to wear a veritaserum t-shirt! But i do agree that the simpler the design is, the easier it would be to get going.
E.g. no Hp related images means no legality problems. So like Pixy said, maybe Veritaserum.com on the front and "Let the truth be told" on the back ...or visa versa.
Also, a simpler design is bound to cost less.
My biggest query with the idea is that how could a t-shirt be $15, include shipping and be shipped abroad.. surely it's going to cost a lot more in shipping fees, ergo more expensive t-shirt...

Oct 21 2005, 01:44 PM
I also would LOVE to wear a veritaserum Tshirt...of course like everyone else said as long as its simple..I already get made fun of enough

if I walk into my house with a shirt that has HP plastered all over it I will never hear the end of it!!! plus productions costs...it is MUCH MUCH cheaper the less colours and text...
About shipping I second you Nick...is there some way that maybe shipping shirts overseas can have a different price than those shipped to North America?? of course it will cost more to go overseas...even to Canada it will cost more than in the US..and I dont want you guys to loose money over this...

Wow, it's good to know there's other people out there who'd wear a shirt. I'd probably end up wearing mine as a nighty shirt because I get peeved when people ask about the logos on your shirt and you have to go "Well, you see...blah...blah..." and in the end the person asking doubles over in laughter and you get ticked at them and swear to never look into their eye again, but then you have to do and break your swear because they're your best friend...
Okay so maybe I would wear it in public, that's how much I love yall...

Though, I'd be nice just to have a comfy, cheap, black t-shirt with VTM and I absolutely agree with Pixy on 'Let the Truth be Told' being printed somewhere on it with back or front.
It'd be a huge undertaking though, having the shirts printed up, packaged, shipped, and all the legal and financial stuff involved. It may end up taking a few years off Matthew's life, but it would definitely boost money that would go towards the upkeeping of VTM.

I would wear a t-shirt with an enormous picture of Harry Potter and a huge VTM logo plastered all over the front to school any day. C'mon guys... less embarrassment, more community spirit!

Of course, I don't think it would surprise many of my classmates -- it is a well-known fact around my parts that I worship HP and Matthew and everyone and everything connected with VTM. One of the many reasons why my sister and I continue to be the only members in my school... everyone's afraid of my freakish nature when it comes to the fandom, and I suppose they automatically assume that all HP people are in the same mold (i.e. raving lunatics)...

I was assuming that that was local shipping costs.
I'm the merchandise co-ordinator for a up-and-coming Rover camp and (and please let noone who is COMING to camp see this!

) you wouldn't believe the profit that we are making on these shirts!!!
A basic shirt, average quality, with a basic design can cost as little as about $5AUS (which is what? 2pounds? my european/UK conversion isn't very good), when you are ordering 500 or so.
Which for something like this, they probably would be. And if it's something simple then it's something that can be kept around for the next wave of HP fans. It's really only sizing that is a remote problem with bulk ordering because you don't always know how big you are going to want things- exactly what is 'average' sizing for forumers? When there are so many people from different locations and of different ages etc.
I'd recommend that if it was going to go ahead, find out the minimum number that is needed to order, have people put and pay for pre-orders and then order at least that many (because the sizes will be right) and then depending on who you go through, most companies will either let you order as you want them for the same price or get a few excess of different sizes and just get rid of them as they are wanted.
But in regards to the price thing, I personally would pay $15 for a shirt not including posting. I'd be expecting that pricing would be more for people outside of wherever it was getting shipped from.

Hey, fuoco, where can I see the shirt design? *giggle*
Of course I would buy a t-shirt and wear it! I think the merchandise idea is great. I've been so sad I was to late to order a shirt at potterpuppetpals, but it'd be so great to get a VTM one instead. Seriously!
And goodness, why be embarrassed about it? We spend so much time here, everybody else has probably already realized it, even if we don't wear shirts to out us yet. Hehe.
What about sweat shirts, pens,... and maybe Snape underwear, for those who don't dare to wear a VTM-shirt in public? *giggle*
No, I am serious, we actually had underwear merchandise for our school. *lol*
Awe, I am in tears, I just picture my man in black boxers with white writing "Let the truth be told". *giggles* That's be hillarious!

I would definitely wear a VTM tshirt. I agree with everyone else that it should be simple, but wouldn't it be hard to ship($$$)because we're scattered all over...if we could do it, it would be a good fundraiser for possible post book 7 party for VTM fans(http://www.veritaserum.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5721 is the whole address for the thread). It would be cool to have pens and stuff too.

It's not really all that difficult, you set up a Cafe Press account, so that for instance it costs Veritaserum, 15 dollars when someone buys the t-shirt. But you put the settings on the account so that when that p[erson buys the product it costs 20 dollars, so Cafe Press charges 15 dollars and you are left with a profit of 5 dolalrs it's really very easy!

Yeah, a VTM shirt would be great! I also would love to have a mug! And with the T-Shirt ... Do you think there is a chance to have fitted T-Shirts for woman, maybe even with a V-neck and ... ehem ... maybe the writing just on the back? Because ...*embaressed* ... when you are not on the boyish end of the female spectrum, itīs not really of advantage to have some writing on your chest, when you know what I mean ...

And basic black would be great! Would it be possible to get it send to where ever you are in the world, are just in the States?

I just wondered if this is something that might still happen...
Because if it is - what if there were just slogans like "Good or Evil - the question remains..." or "Who is R.A.B?" or other random Harry Potter related stuff that won't be infringing on copyright.
So then only those who'd know what was up could laugh at you, and you could laugh at them for knowing.

A few more ideas that just popped up:
"Severely Mystified"
"Evil git"
"Walking into the arena with your head held high!"
"The Switheroo Theory"
Mugs would be cool too - I'd definitely get myself a mug!

That is a really good idea! Put the "Who is R.A.B?" on the front and Veritaserum let the truth be told on the back.
That one would be in black and red. Then you all could have like shirts that say something like SPELL: the Society for the Prevention of Ending Lupin's Life on the front, but with Where welwolves are people too under Veritaserum on back. The same for MOOP and SOSS and SPEW. Those type of things. That would be SO cool!

I like the VTM on the back idea. . .it would be a funny way to meet people who may have landed on the site before. A little inside joke, perhaps. Of course, then they'd have to admit to being Potter fans themselves.

Wow, some really great ideas have been proposed! Laurette, I love the "Who is R.A.B.?" and "Evil Git," along with others, of course
Padfoot, the "
Veritaserum: Let the Truth Be Told" is PERFECT! That can go on the back of any Harry Potter shirt and be great!
Hmmmm...I am thinking that it would be more fun to have comical shirts...ones that when people see it and read them they will get a good laugh, and remember the site for the future. I am terrible at making these slogan-typed things up, but I will give it a shot:
"
Yeah, I'm a Harry Potter fan. Whatcha gonna do about it?"
"
Accio A LIFE!"
or even just ones like
"Long live Dumbledore" with a good picture of DD on it...
Yeah...I told you I was really bad

... Just, obviously before something (if anything) is ever decided upon, somebody must check with WB to see what names, places, words, phrases, spells, etc. are copyrighted by them. It would be terrible to see VTM get in trouble with WB over somethng fun like this!

Really, Omerus? You like it? Haha...well, I thought it was funny. And I would definitey wear that shirt...it describes me perfectly!
My friend's dad owns a company that does party stuff -- invitations for weddings, birthdays, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, party planning, etc. I am pretty sure that he also makes custom shirts like the ones that we are looking to make. I think so, at least...my friend had a birthday party and everybody got a shirt saying "Kyle's Birthday Party" with a design on it...
Well, I can ask him if he would be able to create this type of design and make shirts. That, however, is not the hard part. Anybody can find a person who makes shirts. What we would have to do is consult Matthew -- if he approves of making VTM merchandise, that is -- and figure out how to get the items and money to and from the buyers and whoever has the shirt. That is up to Matthew and how he would like to organize such a system is up to him. He might even know somebody who can get him some shirts. I guess we should just wait and see what he has to say....

Well as much as I would like to find new ways to raise money for the site, I think there may be copyright problems here. Scholastic and JKR permit all the Potter fan sites and posting of copyrighted material because it is good business and keeps the fans happy. Producing mechandise based upon the series and selling it will probably cross the line. Producing shirts with Who's R.A.B. or Veritaserum may or may not be a copyright violation but I bet a letter from their lawyers would be in the mail if we did start selling merchandise based upon the series.
Just my two cents. For what its worth, I would also buy a Veritaserum - Let the Truth be Told shirt.

Sigh, I hate to have to agree with greg here . . .but I do. I think that there'd be some infringement that we'd have to deal with. It wouldn't bode well for our superheros, either. Sigh. It's fun to dream, though.
VTM is non-profit, though. I'm sure taking care of the tax forms would be too big of a hassel, but I wonder how much could be avoided by being non-profit.

And, wouldn't it be awesome to just be walking down the street, wearing your vtm shirt, and suddenly be stopped by another VTM perosn? I just think that would be the coolest thing since sliced bread! But, then again, sliced bread isn't all that cool....

I don't think you have to pay taxes on a CafePress account:
www.cafepress.com so that's not a problem. Obviously if VTM puts it's own graphics up that's fine, because VTM owns them. I agree with Greg and Passerby that it won't be practical to attempt to infringe copyright laws, although i do love the 'Accio, a life!' one, David, very funny!

Cafe Press won't even let you upload copyrighted images, but maybe if somebody wanted to come up with some sort little logo-design thingymcbob, it would be okay? And I have found a LOT of HP stuff on there, so it must not be too bad on the legality front. Nick, do they check the legalities for you at cafepress, or is that the responsibility of the design artist?

Yer it's the artists responsibility. However the legality issue is not really one, the Veritaserum Logo is opyright to Matthew. And if we added Accio, we'd just have to put TM after it. There is so much Harry Potter material out there, warner Brothers will not take you to court over printing illegal t-shorts.

While I would buy up anything that Veritaserum has to offer, I fear that it may not be possible anymore. Recently Mugglenet has had to cease all sales of their merchandise as of January 1st. I believe they were given a grace period from which they were allowed to sell the remainder of what they had to their fans up until January 1st. After that, I believe, is when Warner Bros. will take action in regards to copyright laws. Perhaps their is a way around this, seeing as I dont know what exactly was for sale. I really hope a loophole exists because I would love nothing more than a VTM hoodie or track jacket!

After the Burial

I can understand that anything with the name of Harry Potter would have the rights sold. I imagine that the contract with JK incluces all contents of the books. That would of course include Vertitaserum. However, VTM is not included in the books. Would we be able to use VTM as the crux of the sales? I would hope that this would be some loophole.
Albus Dumbledore
Jan 14 2007, 07:39 AM
Hmm you may be right there. I cant see them having rights to the letters VTM. That would be ridiculous! The three letters " V T M " would look nice on shirts when using the "Lumos" lettering. This way people can ask you then, "What does VTM stand for?" and you can tell them, with the hopes that they will join the site, or atleast use it for all their Harry Potter news and needs. Mugglenet is kind of screwed for loopholes because they really dont have something like "Veritaserum= VTM", and if they do, its not that popular. VTM may be the loophole we are looking for.
~Albus
**edit**- about 4 mins after I posted this, I actually asked Matthew about it and he reaffirms that it is illegal to sell anything related to Harry Potter when you do not own the rights. He also confirmed that Warner Bros. did place a stop on the sale of all non-WB Harry Potter items from the Fansites. Even the letters VTM would fall under that rule because it is common knowledge that VTM stands for Veritaserum. Darn... looks I better get out the Sharpies and white t-shirts! haha
