Hiya (hpcrazy) and Denise,

Just a quick reminder that one-liners aren't allowed on these Forums. Please elaborate more in your future posts. smile.gif We like to encourge discussions, and one line just doesn't give other members anything to respond to.
Could you please have another look at the Rules? (the link is in my siggy) it would be much appreciated.

Happy Posting biggrin.gif

I think they jsut did that for the movie nothing more nothing less, it just made a way better opening then him with a flashlight.
George's Girl
oh my goodness!!! i just don't believe i never noticed that!!! *slaps forehead*

oh the shame!!!! i've watched taht movie so many times, and never realised the incontinuity!!!

i suppose, before i saw the movie first, heard about a report on it that talks about how it begins with "harry under his sheets playing with his wand", only in a very...suggestive type way... it was kinda strange, and that's all i could think about when watching it...just how it could be misinterpreted, not thinking aobut the actual misinterpretaion, if you get me.

i'll stop rambleing now. i realy do think that JK needs to pay a little bit of attention to the way the directors go with the movies. i mean, they are getting further and further from the books! by HBP, they'll probably just have DD take a 'very long vacation" rather than showing the truth!!!!

oh, and the whole not doing magic isn't necessarily a question of dangerous/ not dangerous spells, it's to do with the muggle secrecy thing (OotP, with the dementors) surely if a muggle saw a youth walking around with a bright light coming from the end of a thin strip of wood, people would be at least curious.

deary me. what to do???

i still can't get over the fact i didn't pick up the whole doing magic out of school with lumos thing!!!*slaps forehead again*

At times you are very much more observant than me. I noticed this but I didn't really think much of it. Hmm. . .I wonder if that was a mistake, or they did it purposely. It seems like anyone who knows anything about the Harry Potter world would catch this, especially the director of the Harry Potter movies. I liked te scene though. It was a cool way to open it! happy.gif

I think it is a homework.but i also agree with [u] you that is Harry is underage and he is not allowed to do magic at home.

MOD EDIT: Minor netspeak found in your post.
bloodbadge
Nope, I believe that is a mistake of the director. Students are absolutely forbidden to cast any form of spells outside of school, in muggle inhabited areas.

Nice one for spotting it *
*potter*
Right, i think that he's doing his homework he wouldnt do it purposely to get a fine when he is underage right? mellow.gif
Urik Burik
Well i dont care that much.
But in the book Harry studied about the treatment about the medieval witchies and wizards.
I think Cauron put that in so he could get light for the titel.
But i too think harry is not allowed to do even lumos at home.
But itīs such a short scene so i dont care that much about it. smile.gif
Severus_Snape
This is the first question i thought when i first saw the movie! It was like, something isn't right here.....
*potter*
Well, i think JK has done a lot of mistakes in the films and this one could be one of them but i dont remember but is this mentioned in the book aswell
MIKOH
well it's not the only mistake in movie 2 hermione used magic to fix harry's glasses in diagon alley, i always wondered why wasn't she warned at least.
besty
omg dont u lot get it it was homework so he was aloud to it not like it was the imperious curse anyway it may ov been mistake anyway!!!!

Mod Edit: Net speak is not allowed. Read the Rules. Also I don't like the way in which you have written this post, please make sure you keep it civil.
Triad
Underaged Wizards can not do magic outside of School. In Hermiones' case she was in Diagon Alley surrounded by Witches and Wizards so it would have been impossible to tell who cast the spell. Harry on the other hand should not have done magic but they had to start the movie off someway didn't they? It's silly how they don't stick to the Rules that JKR has set down but there's no need to lose our cool over it.

Besty, I suggest you read the Rules. As I said in the Mod Edit, netspeak and the way you worded your post are not acceptable.
AFSA
I FEEL IN THE EYE OF JKR LUMUS IS A MINOR MAGIC IN THE MAGIC WROLD IS JUST LIKE LIGHTING UP A CANDLE NOTHING MUCH THATS why IT ISNT GIVEN MUCH IMPORTANCE BUT A SPELL WHICH COULD BLOW UP your AUNT OR WHICH COULD MAKE OBJECT FLY SUCH AS THE CAKE IN PART 2 NOW THAT SERIOUS MAGIC THAT KIND OF MAGIC IN NOT PERMITTED NONO NOT IN THE JKG'S BOOKS smile.gif

MOD EDIT: please see the post below by me
hermione's sister
Ok, I'm not a mod, and I hate to say it, but:

1) You're not allowed to type in capitals as it's considered shouting, which is rude, and:

2) You can't use net speak.

Ok? Just thought you might like to know.

I'm really, really sorry mods for stealing your job. sad.gif

Anyway, on topic.

I always understood why Hermione can use magic in Diagon Alley (being in the prescense of loads of witches and wizards etc). However, I still don't get why Harry doesn't get told off for it in COS, even. Let alone POA.

Any ideas?

P.S. AFSA, you bumped the thread up quite a bit!!!

Hi there Hermione's sister...if you could please leave the moding to the mods...we will get to it...I know you are trying to help but people get resentful...also if you could please have a look at the rules...your siggy is too large the max it can be is 5 lines of text and yours is over that..

AFSA she is right though netspeak ex Y should be why...is not allowed on the forums..and typing in all caps is considered shouting...if you could please be more careful I have edited your post for you this time but in the future be more careful..there is a link to them in my siggy if you need any help feel free to contact a mod or an auror and we will be more than happy to help you

I don't know why Harry keeps getting acussed of Underage Wizardry because he never done any magic in CoS it was Dobby!! And he never ment to swell Aunt Marge up!! Because he never actually got his wand out and cast a spell on her!! And in OotP(well the book anyway) he was defending himself and Dudley from a dementor!!
Harry Ballsonia
Maybe because itz a small charm so itz not registering.
shanshan
Its probually just a movie thing. They have to put different things in the movie to make itmore visually appealing to us. Just like the have to take certain things out for time and other things.
62442al_Man
I actually did notice this when I watched the movie. He was doing Lumos under his blankets and I was like...well...that can't be right ph34r.gif Its not a huge deal, but considering that a few scenes later he blows his aunt up, I guess maybe he should have been warned twice.
zoabella
Wow, I feel so stupid that I never noticed this before! shocking.gif It never occured to me... I wonder if it was a screwup or something. Or maybe Lumos is such an insignificant spell that the ministry allows it... I don't know, but whoever caught this, good eye! biggrin.gif
Fawkes102
I noticed this from the film, but also when I went back and re-read OotP, when Harry and Dudley are attacked by Dementors, Lumos is the first thing that Harry does, before he does the patronus. No letter or anything ever mentions the use of that spell. Now, one could theorize that they wouldn't bother in the shadow of him conjuring something as "big" as a patronus - but since they were kind of out to get him at the time, I think that they'd try and use it to charge him with even more!

I think that there must be some kind of magic that they're permitted to do outside of school. Hermione discusses practicing for school over breaks, as does Ron.
harrypotterfan3000
I agrre all the way with Fawkes102 . you jusat said what i was just going to right! i guss since the spell only makes a light so it cant hurt anyone. biggrin.gif

*harrypotterfan3000
Duvessa
actually, harry uses spells in the book too, when he's at the dursley's...if i'm not mistaken, he says "lumos" when he's trying to figure out what is hiding in the bushes, before the knight bus almost knocks him over.....i don't think it's just the screenwriters, because jo obviously overlooked that fact as well, which is weird, because she seems to put alot of emphasis on how underage wizards are not allowed to do magic outside of school...
Hermione_18
that is a very good point, maybe lumos doesn't count as a spell because all it does is create light, so it can't hurt and one in any way shape or form

That is an excellent question. Nothing I can add to this thread really except to say congratulations on spotting a rather huge error on Alfonso Cuaron's part.
amortentia_149
I thought of that too. There are actually a few times that they do magic outside of school (although it's mainly in the books) but yeah, it was really weird. I guess they just thought it would make a good start of the movie.
