I hope someone hasn't already done this and I'm really sorry if I repeated this but most of all I don't want to make the mistake because I haven't heard any ship names on this site and I think it doesn't have any.
So my question is "Do you think this site should have 'ship names?"
Please delete this topic after awhile if it has already been done.
Most sites have ship names like Ron and Hermione could be called .... or Harry and Ginny could be called... Something that has a significance to the ship.

I don't really think there's any need for that. Generally, R/Hr is 'the good ship', H/Hr is 'Pumpkin Pie', R/S is 'Wolfstar', D/H is 'Guns N'Handcuffs' etc...it's just common throughout the fandom and VTM is no different. If the mods renamed all the ships threads, a lot of newcomers to the fandom wouldn't know what we were all on about and it's very excluding to new people, and that's not what we're about here.
If y'all want to use those names in your own threads, then feel free, but no, we're not renaming the ships threads. Sorry. I'll leave this open for the other mods to comment on though if they want to.

Those aren't names that Louise just pulled out of the sky, R3d L1nk.

They're just weird nickname-things that have been established in the fandom over time -- they existed long before I was part of the HP Internet community, at any rate. I personally don't see any need to retitle all the ships threads and stuff, because like Louise said, it would confuse new members of the fandom. When I joined, I for one definitely didn't know about those names!

I like the way we try to make all the thread titles as clear-cut as possible around here -- it helps with the search tool, minimizes general confusion, etc. If we called the Ron/Hermione thread 'The Good Ship' or whatever, we'd probably have a load of duplicate topics called 'Ron/Hermione' and 'Will Ron and Hermione go out?' and stuff like that. So yeah, in my opinion, it's most convenient to leave the topic titles as they currently stand.

Ship is an abbreviated version of the word relationship as far as I know, that’s the brunt of if, but if I'm wrong please someone correct me.
I definitely agree that we should leave things the way they are. as someone who is relatively new to the world of Harry potter fandom I've definitely found many terms out there relation to a whole range of things, including ships which have been given established personal name, but the only way you would actually know what they mean (for example wolf star) is by actually entering into the realm of the fandom. Plus if we called the Sirius/Remus thread 'wolfstar' the search filters would have a harder time picking it up if say you typed Remus/Sirius in to the search engine. It just makes sense to be explicit with the ship titles.

OMG!!! Ok, I just read the link that Dana posted in another thread giving a complete list of names and I have to say... OMG! I am almost scared that there are people who have gone through, thought about all of this and renamed all of the relationships!!!
I am not a huge shipper. There are some ships that I like to comment or speculate on, but generally speaking, I keep to the basics. It didn't even OCCUR to me to put crookshanks and Mrs Norris together, for example. But to add odd little names to it, would just be completely daunting!!!
Please- oh PLEASE!!! Keep things simple for us simple-minded folk!!!

Hehe, Salazaar, don't worry. When I entered the online fandom (not too long ago actually..) I had absolutely no idea what a 'ship' was.
Like it's been mentioned by Souljacker a few posts above, 'ship' is short for 'relationship'. That's all. It's about the romantic relationships between the various HP characters, like Ron and Hermione, or Harry/Hermione, or Remus/Tonks etc. Some of them are really off the wall, like Crookshanks/Mrs. Norris.
A 'shipper' is obviously someone who would like two peole to get together, or who thinks two people are best suited for each other. You'd call me a Remus/Tonks shipper, for example.
Hope that helped a bit.

Yes, I must agree with michelle on this one: Naming all the ships would be just too difficult, especially for new members. Imagine! "Hey! I'm a Pumpkin Pie and Guns 'n' Handcuffs shipper, you?" yeah, a little mind boggling for people who dont know or just recently (I know from experiance) learned what a ship or a shipper is! And then they would have to know all the names!
Like Pixymajik, I'm not a big shipper either, as I'm sure a lot of other people as well are not, so why make it more complicated than it already is

I'm so glad that I wasn't the only one that was clueless as to what 'ships' stood for when first entering the forum.
To be honest, this is the first time I have heard the aforementioned ship names, they sound really good and very descriptive I love the Guns and Hnadcuffs one
- but I think that it would be very confusing and I know that I would get lost somewhere in the(already quite) tangled web of shipping if the names were added (
I may dye me hair black but I still have blonde roots
- sorry bad long-running joke (in real life) about me trying to hide my 'blondeness') What is the name for the sirius/lupin ship?

i don't really know if there should be or not. I have a sinking feeling that there shouldn't be and they should just be done like how it normally is. i don't really know what to think about this but i'm starting to go more for not creating names. there already heaps of names for other HP things, don't you think that there are enough?

i like the idea of ship names but it is harry and Ginny and Ron and Hermione Harry and Ginny ( H/G ) Ron And Hemrione ( R/HR ) i mean it is everyones own choice to pick who you want but JKR has been dropping hint that ron loves hermione and hermione loves Ron and Harry and Ginny. Ginny always loved Harry but now Harry feels the same.so it is R/HR and H/G

Although in a previous post I said that it would confuse me completely (what can I say I'm easily confused), but I do remember wondering what the name for the non-cannon ship between Remus and Sirius is, I found it out, namely, 'Wolfstar' - I think that it is such a cute name.
But even though I love the 'Wolfstar' name, I still think that it would be too confusing to use them - sorry (I'm hopeless)

Yeah, maybe ship names woluld be good, but only for the basics e.g.Orange Crush-Harry/ginny, Good ship-Ron/Mione, Guns"n" Handcuffs- Draco/ Harry Fire and Ice-Ginny/ Draco Snape/ Mione-Prudence and Potions Leather and Libraries- Draco and Mione Wolfstar- Remus/ sirius Government stole my toad-Neville/ Luna Flaming toad Neville/ Ginny prophetic toad Neville/Lavender Wotcher wolvie-remus/tonks batteries and baking-Molly/ arthur fang and flora- Biil/ Fleur Thorn and buck-James/Lily Snitch and a word that rhymes with Snitch-Draco/Pansy.
I don't think you shold be allowed to use the lesser -known ones because if they are basedva round one topic e.g.Quidditch it can become very confusing what is what.

I don't think we need ship names. I've posted quite a bit here, and I still think all of the names people have for ships are overwhelming! I think if people want to nickname ships, the names HP fandom has now should suffice. I am fine with the plain old R/Hr or G/H.
I should be doing homework now, not posting here...

The ship names were soo confusing when I got into the online world of HP. I was looking up icons and was like...pumpkin pie? Did i miss that in the books. well a little help from the site called urbandictionary and I got it all cleared up. They call it Pumpkin Pie because it was "Created by the fanfiction writer Cassandra Claire, "Pumpkin Pie" is the title of the relationship, or "ship" in fanfiction terminology, between Hermione Granger and Harry Potter. It is believed that this name arised from a story of Ms. Claire's, in which after kissing Harry Potter, Hermione thought that he tasted like pumpkin pie." At least that's what is says there. I love the OBHWF. It stands for One Big Happy Weasley Family. It's a Ron/Mione and Harry/Ginny ship. I also love the good ship. I love Wotcher Wolvie I think it's cute, remus and tonks aww

. But my favorite, which took me a while to uncode the name because it's not as popular, I was unaware of thorn and buck thank you for that one I always called it James/Lily, they called it the shoebox project which also ships remus/sirius (the whole marauder era). But I just like James/Lily. I'm not a huge shipper where I'm obsessed, but I like ot be informed about it.
The names make it confusing, but once you know them their fun becuase you feel liek you're tlaking in a secret code.

I think that the ships shouldnt have names for instance, say HP had a
ship with Ginny and their ship was called: loveys

, and all of a sudden HP
doesnt like her anymore he might be in another ship with Cho he'll have to
have another name.In other words I'm saying there really is no point in having
ship names.

I would be so confuzzled! It's easier to say R/Hr, H/G and H/Hr. Mind you, even then, my family doesn't know what i'm on about.
But nah i reakon, i'd get super confused, and i'm pretty sure people new to the fandom would be also. I think they are pretty cute really, and i agree with you there, snuffle4eva, it would be like speaking in code andyou'd feel cool because you know what you're talking about and others don't.
But i think it's a bit over-welming. I don't think we need to.

As a non-shipper I reckon it'd be a waste of time. everything in the books changes so suddenly that one minute your thread would be 'Love Forever - Ginny and Harry' and the next it would be 'Failed Relationships' You know? It would be so annoying. And confusing, especially for new members.

I agree, I think it would be a waste of time. I get tired of hearing "Tom-Kat" and "Brangelina" on the news, and I don't want to have to hear all of the ridiculous names when I come here.
Plus, for people like me, I would probably get some of the names mixed up and say something about one ship when I mean another one.

I nearly fell of my chair when I read this. I mean I've been around a while and I never spotted this one. How hilarious.....I can just imagine it now....Harcho, or Herron. Or what about Hargin. Give me a break. The only good use for namimg ships is when you need the space on a plaque to name you house, just like my in-laws did years ago....I remember Brenmel well!

Well my vote went to I don't know for only one reason... If there is a name that really sounds mature and good, then I don't really see a reason why it shouldn't be used. However I think the use of them makes the ideas seem comical, when really some people really believe in their desired ships. I just think it's a little off the wall idea that should really be left to Hollywood.

I really dont know about this one...I guess of people want to name the ships themselves, then they should be able to, but they shouldnt expect everyone to call that ship by that exact name....

I'm well aware that the poll is rather an old one by now, but nonetheless I'm happy I came across it.
First, being relatively new to the internet HP fandom I've heard for the first time about any names for ships. Well, one learns new things every day, right?

And second, it lifted my spirit learning that by far I was not the only one who did not know what "ship" stands for. I remember feeling rather stupid not knowing what the whole concept is about. And from this particular reason, I wouldn't make the newcomers feel the same by complicating the matters further with ship names, though some of them are rather inventive, I must admit.

What I like the most about VTM is how friendly the environment is for newcomers. This is the first site I registered for HP stuff and the experience has been so nice, that now I've forgotten about the others. I'm here on most of my spare time!
Ship names would only complicate things. Just like someone above said, there would have to be a different name for every person a certain character is involved with and that would only complicate things! I read in Mugglenet (I think it was there) about the sinking of the Harmony ship (H/Hr) and the steadying of the Heron ship (Hr/R). I like it much more to use the first (and sometimes second) letter of the names, that way we always know who we are talking about and there's no confusion, either if you're new or not, you can always make a mistake and get confused with a ship name.
So well done VTM, I love this site!

I agree with Kaitlyn. It would make things way too complicated for members, especially newcomers. No one is going to want to spend an hour trying to decipher the ship names. This is a newcomer friendly site and I give kudos to VTM for consistently keeping it that way.

I mainly use H/HR, Hr/R, H/G, etc. The only other names I use to describe ships is Harmony for H/Hr. I think they're easy enough to understand and just take less time to type. But should a site only allow specific names or abbreviations, no it's up to that individual who's posting.

No, I agree in that that would be confusing for everybody, newcomers and oldies. It's far easier and more simple using just the first letters; besides, I think it's a bit riddiculous if you name a ship ... I don't even like how it sounds the word Romione or Romionians, I rather love R/Hr. I do have my own names I use just for nicknames, but I don't think they'll be worth to name a ship.

I don't think it really matters to me but it would cause lots of confusion. The only ship names I ever really use are Harmony and Pumpkin Pie for Harry and Hermione. On non-Harry Potter sites I use hiphuggers for Eric and Calleigh (my display picture) and creppy incest for Henry and Abby (Harpers Island).
