I couldnīt find a topic on costuming in the movies so Iīm making one here smile.gif

Temime havenīt exactly impressed me yet, but in the Goblet of Fire there seems to be at least many new and exciting costumes. You have Rita who really makes you feel discussed when you see her, and with a skirt and jacket locking like this ...well, you get my point, he - sheīs not a nice lady!

We have the french girls looking really gorgeous in their light blue outfits!

Fleur, Krum and Diggory looking nice! After I got used to Fleurs looks she is becoming more and more beautiful actually smile.gif

And last, but not least; Hermiones Yule Ball Dress. Whatīs the deal with that one, I ask you! I guess the colocorrecting on it will make the dress look better, but still...aiai. Looks fun to dance in tough cool.gif

Round and round!

So what are you planning to wear at the prem night? rolleyes.gif

aww..hermione and viktor look so happy..that's so adorable! i'm looking forward to the Yule Ball. I also love the Beauxbaton clothes..they're cool.

Hmm. Hermoine's dress seems circa late 1980's proms dress...too many ruffles...

My pet peeve right now is the triwizard outfits. They look like a court jester's outfit to me..*sigh*

I do like the school uniforms for this year though. Kinda of casual.

I wonder what does Cho wear for the Yulle Ball ^^,

In the trailer I saw she is wearing a Chinese white gown, but it doesn't to clear sad.gif ,

Hermione looks pretty in that outfit laugh.gif , but it's pink not blue like in the book dry.gif

I actually quite like the modern look of the Triwizard tournament windbreakers. Makes it seem like there's a "real" wizarding world out there, parallel to our own...

I can't wait to see Ron's ruffled Yule Ball outfit! Flashbacks from way too many 70s weddings here!

Cheers!

yeah, I really like the uniforms from the other schools - I think they did a great job on those.

I'm really like what they've done for the champions - how they are all wearing their school colors with their names on the back like a sports jersey - how cool is that! I don't necessarily like the track pants that the contestants wear in the third task - i don't think they work with their shirts, but hey. MINOR thing! I was also kinda surprised to see Harry in a swim/wetsuit at the second task? I guess they tweaked the story there, giving him time to change out of his robe, shoes, etc, but I sure hope they keep Dobby and the gillyweed bit!

I'm overall a little sad in the lack of robes in the film, but the films have just been moving that way for a while. I really miss DD wearing colored velvet with embroidered moons and stars like Richard Harris' character. I really like Sir Michael Gambon, it's just sad that he looks like a scraggly gandalf in his outfits.

but definatley my favorite costumes in the entire movie are the "dress robes" - THEY ARE PERFECT. I was so curious how they were going to pull those off when I read the book, but making them look like tuxedos? BRILLIANT! and that ron's looks like it's from the 70's? PERFECT! I was sooo impressed. (a little disappointed in hermione's outfit, though, but Emma still looks amazing!!)

I couldn't help but comment here as I read Geneva's views. You are so right about Professor Dumbledore's robes! I make my living as an historic costumer, and the thing I loved about Richard Harris' robes was how genuine they looked--like someone had taken many, many hours to embroider appliques, stitch quilting in by hand, and hand-apply beadwork. To me, Dumbledore is the wisest and the finest wizard in the British wizarding world--his robes should reflect the esteem and respect in which he is held, and those did. Michael Gambon's Dumbledore robes, on the other hand, look like something I could knock out in a couple of days, with plain silks and purchased trims. It makes my eyes sad. sad.gif

I rather like Cho's evening gown, the champagne color, the Chinese motif--kinda ties in with the Patil twins' pretty Indian Sari gowns.

I am not sure I like the coloring of Hermione's gown, it's a bit garish to me. Though they do tend to put her in pink when she's not in uniform. Perhaps it is a favorite color of Emma's? She does seem to favor reds and pinks in real life, though she looks nice in blue. I have yet to see any photos of Fleur's gown. Maybe it's in blue--she seems to wear blue all the time, so maybe they felt it wouldn't be visually pleasing to have Hermione in blue also?

I'm with you Generva. In the books, whenever a wizard or witch is wearing muggle clothing they do a TERRIBLE job of dressing- mixing swimsuites with winter clothes and so on. But in the Movies they are in muggle clothes more then Robes. Robes being the main clothing of witches and wizards, I would like to see them wearing robes more often.

And I don't really like not like the modern, almost futuristic, look of the triwizard tournement outfits, but I still would rather them in robes, as in the books.

I must say that I really love the costumes for GOF, especially the ones that the Death Eaters wear. cool.gif
Geneva
yeah, I think that the way the movie costume designers have gone is the most blatent way of saying "we are not the books." Which, to me is so sad. and it makes me feel like they are undermining the story.

I guess it's what people do with the fact that the Harry Potter series is a modern day fantasy. They try to keep the characters looking "relatable, thinking that wizard's robes as too "other worldly" and not "modern" enough. or something. Whatever their reason, it's a shame because it seems like a rather fun challenge to really express the coexisting of the muggle and wizarding worlds in their clothes. But I guess the costume designers of GOF weren't looking for that challenge like the crew of SS were.

I really laughed when I read the comment a few posts ago about Ron's dress robes looking like rejects from a early 1970's wedding, because I'd had that exact thought when I first saw the photos.

I thought the costumers did a great job on the guys' dress robes and I do like the "tuxedo" look.

Have to agree about Hermione's Yule Ball gown, though. In the first photo that was really mostly a headshot, I thought it was almost a peach in color, but the later photos and the trailer are a deep pink. Not sure about the color. She's so pretty, I thought they could have made a less ruffely gown with a prettier color.

I also like Harry's jacket in the tournament.

A historic costumer? That sounds fun!

Thank you, it is very fun! It's something I've wanted to be since I was a little girl, making full Civil-War era costumes for my Barbie dolls. smile.gif

You all have really good observations to make about the costumes, too. I've always liked the Wizard/Muggle mixture in the costumes for the kids, the ordinary British public school uniform worn under wizard's robes, and they've carried that same theme into the boy's tuxedo/robe combos for GoF. I wish they might have made the girls look less like ordinary prom dates, but it's a small matter. The athletic clothes for the events are again a mix of muggle and wizard wear, and I get a kick out of seeing how they blend the two.

Geneva, it was interesting how you mentioned the seeming need for the costumers to digress from the books. They definitely do digress, but films are really a creative enterprise, and I can say from experience that I have a lot more fun when a client of mine justs gives me a basic outline of what they want, then hands me the reins on the details. Otherwise, it's all technical, and it lacks the part of the process that is the most intriguing. So I guess in some ways I sympathise with their need to digress a bit--as long as they don't go too far!

Actually, I feel the costumers weren't given enough to do. I just wish, as many do, that they wouldn't show everyone in ordinary street clothes so much. I read Cuaron wanted the kids in street clothes more for PoA, but I can see ordinary street clothes in just about any film.

Wow the costumes of the film are very fantastic. All the actors in the film looking very beautiful.Especially Hermione and Harry looking avesome.Ron also looking so cute and Cedric is looking so handsome. All the dresses are superb.
Moon(I luv you Luna)
What is with pink? Why coulnd't they just stick to the canon blue dress robes that Hermione wore? I dunno ... *sigh*

but the bauxbaton uniform was ever so cool-i wish ours was like that. My schools uniform looks like it was designed by someone who was colour blind and hates girls!

And Ron's drees robes were fantastic-poor Ron. Don't worry-he'll get over it. happy.gif

after seeing the movie i'm like WHATTTT have they done to the costumes???
i mean SURE the look "pretty" and "modern" at the Yule Ball but they weren't supposed to where they? what happened to the dress robes in pretty periwinkell blue and bottle green to match harrys eyes? argh that made me angry but apart from those costumes everything else was fine and dandly. laugh.gif
Bombard~Lock
I like Beauxbatons hats.Wonder where you can get em. biggrin.gif

Yeah I really enjoyed all of the costumes.

I absolutly LOVED Cho's dress. I want it for myself. But I really did not like Hermiones dress so much. It just, didn't seem to flow well with the scene they were trying to capture.

I belive someone mentioning that it looked like "80's motif", well that's understandable because 80's/90's are a little similar in styles, or blended a little. And this particular movie would have been in 1994 in the HP world. So I think that makes sense.

omg, I hated hermiones' dress...blech, not my type...cho's dress was alright, ron's robes' suited his role well...parvati's dress was alright, I guess, but again not my type...cedric *swoon* omg, he looked so handsome in the outfit...same with harry & neville (although I thought their suits looked quite bulgy on them) omg, I absolutely luved the beaubatons & durmstang outfits, especially the hats wink.gif
~.:hogwarts.bound:.~
Hermione is supposed to be wearing blue! Not pink! But what confused me is that I thought they were supposed to wear like, dress robes, not dresses. All the girls are wearing a dress, which in my opinion isn't very robe-y. Anyway though, the still look nice.
