Umbridge is by far my least favorite character in the whole series up to now. (Not that I have any strong opinions or anything) But without her, the whole of book 5 would have not had it's main antagonist. Of course LV's always luring in the shadows, but he can't really be hanging around Hogwarts now can he, and after all, she did get her just desserts! Clop clop!

I think she didn't ruin it at all, on the contrary. Even if she's the antagonist of the book (and my hat off to JKR for writing such a deliciously evil and mean woman - and dressed in pink to make it worst! laugh.gif ), the people in Hogwarts sticked together on one side: all against Umbridge (remember how McGonagall told Peeves how unscrew a chandellier and make havoc) or how the teachers and students all hated Umbridge's guts. The DA was created and hence the group grew up and became stronger, and also helped Harry - in a hard way - that sometimes he has to control his temper or bad things could happen... not that he really put that in practice a lot laugh.gif

So, I like her.

ok guys listen, i understand you hating her and stuff, but shes a good character, she adds alot to the book and she WILL definatly be back in the deathly hallows

also for the people who were saying this book ruined it for the kids, well dont you think they had to, look at the size of the last 3 books, gof, ootp, hbp, they were huge, the only way kids (13 & under) were going to read them is with there parents, no kid under that age wants to read all that, so the parents probably read it to them an then the parents can choose to soften it up, but i personally think that the books are more adult and its a good thing, so stop worry about the kids because there are hundreds of books for children to read with out any complications, perhaps the books grew up with us, when the first 2 were released the people who are still reading now were young an as we grew up an became more adult so did the books

I don't think she ruined the book. I evil.gif hate evil.gif her to death, but she IS as much as I hate to say it, an important character. dry.gif

Well, she's definitely an annoying character but it's a fact that book5 will be pretty much boring without her. Having her gave us someone to get angry with, someone to blame for bad stuff, she's the one who really developed and showed that the Ministry and Dumby are in disagreement. SO her part is really crucial in Book5.

BUT

I believe we all agree on the fact that she's EXTREMELY ANNOYING making us HATE HER ENDLESSLY. dry.gif mad.gif

i dont think she ruined it, i think she made it more interesting and you would keep reading because you wanted to find out what evil thing she would do next.(even though you would probably keep reading anaway because its an amazing book) she made the book more "EVIL!"

The 5th book is my favorite! Umbridge made it much more addicting. I actullay loath her more than Snape and Malfoy. It made me keep turning the pages to see what would happen next. I actully wanted to hit her! I felt Harry's anger. But when Fred and George dis her in the end it's awsome. Whenever someone disses her I get happy. The best thing about The Harry Potter Books is I feel the characters moods. I feel thier angry, feell their pain, and I feel thier happyness.

In some areas Umbridge did ruin the book...but Umbridge was very entertaining because bad things started to happen at her stay at Hogwarts, and it just made me laugh when Fred and George made that huge swamp, and she couldn't figure out how to magik it away....and how the teachers woudn't help. So she didn't as much ruin the book as I expected her to unsure.gif

yes!! horrible person!!!! she was a ruin and she deserved to not be at dumbledores funerals. blink.gif

Umbridge didn't ruin the book at all for me. She was a character with such an awful personality that she really added to the book. I don't feel if I don't like a character that it diminishes the quality of the book or makes me not want to read it.

I did feel so sorry for Harry, though!

i think Umbridge did not ruin trhe book she accually made harry have to grow up. Without umbridge and her making hogwarts hell for Harry we would not hate the ministry and You would not realize the straenth of his conviction. Also i lovced the funny parts about umbridge the FRed and george escape, her putting three consecutive clases in detention for the sniving snackboxes nad of cource the clop clop after the centar attack.

WE WILL NEVER FORGET THE FACT THAT PEEVES USED MCGONIGAL's
WALKING STICK TO GET UMBRIDGE OUT THAT WAS AMAZING i loved it

P.s sorry about the caps

Even though we all hated Umbridge, I thought she made the story a lot more interesting. Imagine this book without her...pretty plain eh?

I think JK wanted Umbridge to stir our feelings around and target our anger to this character.

It was hilarious though how the teachers and Peeves made her headmistress experience horrible! I loved it!

And I must admit, hating Umbridge and watching her lose in the end made me feel triumphant. tongue.gif

No. Without Umbrdige there would have been no uprising from the DA. Personally that was one of the best parts of the book. I can see what you mean by her making things miserable in Hogwarts but i kind of liked the idea that things were getting harder for Harry and the others etc.
Battlefield2142
i believe that Umbridge did indeed ruin the book. i don't however think that it was the worst book. umbridge did ruin the book but she made it look like the ministry realy didn't want people to be in a panic by making them think that Voldemort realy hadn't returned.

There's an intresting point that i'm in two minds about. I mean it was horrible to listen to her and makeing Harry feels so miserable. I must admit it did get irksome to have Harry being all feeling inclosed and sad and miserable becasuse of her. ( I've just finishing finished reading OOTP again and i noticed this much more than usual after watching the film.)

But then again... That was supposed to be the story that Harry has to start to deal with ... as Dumbledore put's it dark and difficult times. And she made the story somewhat darker. Which made it at points intresting.

So it's a bit half and half for mre really.
