Full Version: Is Neville Evil?
I'm sure you all spotted this long ago, but did you realise that Neville contains the word evil? Could Neville end up being Harry's nemesis?
I hope not! I really doubt Neville is capable of being evil, especially because of what happened to his parents.
I don't think he is, it prolly just a coincidence. I mean i couldn't see him as evil, he did help harry potter out alot in the OOTP.
I'm sorry....but just because Neville has the word "evil" in it, does NOT make him evil. Has he ever given incentive for people to consider him evil?

Neville is NOT evil. Some people try to find clues anywhere and everywhere they can, and always get the wrong ones. Come on, you've read about Neville, you should know him just as well as Harry and everyone else. He is not evil and never will be. He's Neville for heaven sakes.
I think Neville, being a victom of it, wouldn't go there.
Neville can't possibly be evil. A. he's not that smart. B. He's too nice. C. He's a Gryffindor, for G-d's sake!

I quite agree with DancingVeela, after what You-Know-Who did to his parents..I don't think he would really want to be on his side but he would rather work against it.

I suppose it popped into my head because I remember at some point Harry dreaming and likening Neville to Peter Pettigrew, must have been in PoA.
Also in response to the point about him being in Gryffindor, do we know what house Peter Pettigrew was in? I assumed it was Gryffindor as he was friends with James Potter.
Well, the only description of Peter at that time was he was short and chubby. Neville was short and chubby. *huggles Neville* Lol.
I also assumed Gryffindor....though I have NO idea why he was placed in that house....unless he kind of "changed" after his first year.

He was in Gryffindor. It is obvious.
Neville is a French name meaning "New Town"... That doesn't sound too evil... where as other names, if 'evil', have more meaning to them (IE Draco, the Latin word for Dragon... Dragons being fierce beasts and all...)...
Speaking of Pettigrew, though, I wonder something... Ron said that there hasn't been a wizard or witch that's gone bad that hasn't been in Slytherin, automatically leading us to beleive that all Death Eaters/supporters of the Dark Lord were/are Slytherin... but Pettigrew was a Gryffindor, according to common belief... and he certainly went bad.

Well even if, he didn't entirely go bad. Yes, he made bad decisions, he betrayed and raised Tom back. But HE hasen't done anything evil.
Err...actually he led his "best friend" and his best friend's wife to their death. And that was not by accident.
I think Ron was just exaggerating slightly. There probably have been SOME witches or wizads that went over to the dark side that weren't in Slytherin, but most of them probably did come from Slytherin, but not all.
Do we know for sure that James, Sirius, Lupin or Peter were in Gryffindor. I think I have assumed this, but don't know if I ever read it anywhere. Can anyone give references?
yeah. book 5, when harry looks in snapes pensieve.... i think... anyway, nevillle aint evil, i wish he was though, that would be pretty cool, bsides, he could be the HBP who knows
i dont think he is evil! he is so sweet in the books!! and why would he want to be evil??
It probobly does say somewhere that all 4 are Gryffindors... Before book 5, I had always percieved Remus as a Ravenclaw... *shrugs*

I think JKR said on a webchat somewhere that the sorting hat put all the Marauders in Gryffindor... (kind of made a mistake there with Pettigrew, didn't it? Or maybe not.....**chuckles darkly** 
The sorting hat DID take a long time deciding what house to put Neville in in SS though, I guess.....
But, nah.... Neville? Evil? I'd sooner believe that Ginny was....After all, at least she's been possessed by Voldemort once....

I say, even if Neville DESIRED to be evil, the most he could do is accompany the Death Eaters. He isn't good enough or powerful enough to go smoking and torchoring people.
i think nieville is nuetral. think about the prophecy. there is a three way circle of people. VOld. Harry and Nieville. So Vold chose Harry. THerefore Neivlle has been left out so i think it is his chouces not his abilities. So maybe he has something to with HBP since that was a reaoccuring theme in COs (sorry wrong thread just dawned on me )

Well every barrel has its rotten apple. Not everybody that goes fishing use the same bait. One person and you're saying Neville could be bad? There's always that possibility. I'm sure there are people from Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff that could be just as bad. Pettigrew isn't exactly evil either - he just followed whoever has the most power and that got him in trouble.
By the way, Neville has the word "vile" in there too. But usually Rowling's names are sort of more obvious. Sometimes she gives names of mythological characters. Minverva (McGonagall's first name), wasn't she the goddess of wisdom (well I'm pretty sure lol)? Don't look for answers in everything because often times you wont' find it.

AHAHAHAHAHA, NEVILLE BEING EVIL!?! THAT'LL BE THE DAY WHEN I HATE HARRY POTTER! seriously, rowling would NEVER make neville evil by all means. even if i'm not good at theories, or reading in between the lines, i'm sure there is absolutely NOTHING that would expose a fact that would prove neville can be evil. he's just so gosh darn sweet that it's impossible.
