This is a really morbid topic... and really sad too
Fourtunately I wouldn't be able to, I have never seen anyone die and I would like it to stay that way.
Gosh, quite a few people could see them!
Albus Dumbledore
Jul 27 2007, 07:40 PM
Yes, I would be able to see the Thestrals quite clearly.
I have seen quite a few people die now that I think about it. There are three, however, that I saw up close and personal and directly in front of me (others were car accidents and such).
The first time I saw Death it was in a friend of the family's hospital room.. there was an old man in the second bed and he had no one to visit him. We always paid him visits when we visited our friend who also was old, and we had gotten to know him as much as anyone can in that situation. We were there when he died and it was all very sad... we barely knew him (in the great scope of things) but we all sent him off as he drew his last breath. We all cried and it was a hard experience.. my first time seeing death. But I felt good knowing I comforted a lonely old man as he died.
The second time I witnessed Death was a few weeks later, our friend who we had been visiting along with the other guy also passed away then and that was even more heartbreaking. Losing someone you barely know was hard enough, but then to face the horrible realization that you would never speak to a friend again was absolutely crushing. He died with us around his bed and we all got to hug him good bye
The third and final Death (so far, Im 17 so who knows) was my Uncle. We had spent weeks over the summer at his hospital bed after he recovered from a heart attack and soon learned his body was also riddled with cancer. Death was inevitable but for weeks we thought there was going to be some change in fortune.. but alas, he too died with my family around his bed side. For the third time we waited and watched as someone we cared for died, and as he went we gave him hugs and made him comfortable and not scared, just as we had for the other two.

Now this has gotten me all teary eyed... all over Thestrals.

It all reminds me of two songs.. Pilgrim by Enya (whose lyrics are below) and the song "Ashokan Farewell"
Pilgrim, how you journey
On the road you chose
To find out why the winds die
And where the stories go.
All days come from one day
That much you must know,
You cannot change what's over
But only where you go.
One way leads to diamonds,
One way leads to gold,
Another leads you only
To everything you're told.
In your heart you wonder
Which of these is true;
The road that leads to nowhere,
The road that leads to you.
Will you find the answer
In all you say and do?
Will you find the answer
In you?
Each heart is a pilgrim,
Each one wants to know
The reason why the winds die
And where the stories go.
Pilgrim, in your journey
You may travel far,
For pilgrim it's a long way
To find out who you are...
Pilgrim, it's a long way
To find out who you are...
Pilgrim, it's a long way
To find out who you are...

Wow, I'm sorry for your losses, Albus Dumbledore, I really am.
And also to everyone who has lost someone.
I will not be able to see a thestral, and hopefully, I never will.
I know how some people are curious to see what they look like, but witnessing someone's death is a chance that I really don't want to take.

Well, I have had several people I knew die. Fortunately, though, they haven't been in front of me. So I couldn't see a Thestral. I do have a question, though. Why couldn't Harry see them before GoF? Didn't he see his mom die?

I think I would be able to see thestrals.
I saw death more then once.
And to answer Silver Does question: Harry was only a one year old baby and isn`t able to remember what happend. Despite the flash of green light. I think you have to have a fair age to accept what you see. And death is something you don`t understand when you are a little child. That`s my opinion.

I have not seen someone die, and I hope i never do. To live with that would be like, really hard. I'd have to say that I have seen like, a car accident where someone died, but I didn't see someone die. So as of yet, I have not, and I really hope I never have to.

I would. My mother works in the hospital and death is always hanging around. It gets easier to witness because your body kinda goes numb and you don't really feel it anymore it becomes a normal part of life. I know that sounds weird like when people say death is apart of life but it isn't, death is apart of death and it is a whole new journey to take. I'm sorry for all those who have lost someone close.

Unfortunately, I would definitely be able to see thestrals in the Harry Potter world. I watched my grandmother on my father's side die in 1996, while I was visiting her with family in the hospital.
The absolute worst was in 2001. My grandmother from my mother's side had lived with me all of my life. She became very sick around October of 2001, and I guess she had finally had enough of living, since she technically could've fought her way back from having pneumonia: In fact, she had gotten a lot better, when all of a sudden she seemed to slide downhill fast.
She was on home hospice, and my mother and I tried our best to take care of her, get her to eat, and since I was only 16, it was heartbreaking to see the woman who had raised me, (my mother was very busy and gone a lot when I was growing up), refuse to eat or move.
Then one day, December 9, 2001 to be exact, I had a strong sense of foreboding the entire day. We had baby monitors hooked up in her room and the living room, and I heard her begin to choke and ran into her room. She had had Congestive Heart Failure, and as soon as I arrived in her room, she stared at me for a couple of seconds and then died.
So long story made relatively short, I definitely could see them.

I wouldn't be able to see thestrals. Even though there have been deaths in my family (bot my grandparents on my father's side, and an aunt), I've never been next to them on their deathbed.
Two classmates that I cared a lot for died when I was in high school, one in my junior year, and the other one in a terrible car crash the next day after our senior prom. Both deaths were awful, but I didn't get to be with either when they were in the hospital.
I guess being able to see a thestral, or, being aware that death has been so close, gives you a different feeling towards life. A life changing experience.

Yeah, I was wondering if seeing an animal's death counted. But if it did then I bet practically everyone in the Harry Potter world would be able to see them.
So as of now, no I wouldn't be able to. I've been around a LOT of death but I've never had it right in front of me which I am thankful for.
But Thestrals are my second favourite magical creature and I would love to be able to see them, however morbid that sounds...

Yes I would be able to see them. From 92'-95' I saw a lot of people getting killed every day.
And also ,last year,a man in the bus died right in front of me,he had a heart attack.
When I think about it a could see a hell of a lot thestrals!
p.s-when you see a first death it's bad, after it doesn't make any differece to you.

Jan 15 2008, 12:12 AM
I suppose I'm like Hermione on this one - I'd like to see them, but not for the reason you can see them. I've never seen death (well, I have if you count squishing an ant with your foot

) and I don't want to, but I'd like to physically see a thestral. I think Jo could have been more specific - she said only those who have 'seen death' can see thestrals. I suppose she should have said 'seen human death' or something - I don't know!
But wow, I'd love to ride one without seeing it. It would be so weird, but scary and fun at the same time!

well, if you count ticks, then yes. I've come very close to seeing death. My grandfather died about a month after I visited him in Illinois, and if beloved animals count, my head was turned when my cat was hit by a car. Well, I wish I could see Thestrals if you didn't have to see someone pass... This is such a sad thread, isn't it?

This topic is really sad...I'm sorry for those you can see Thestrals.
I wouldn't be able to see Thestrals, but I have experienced a lot of death in my family. My mother is the youngest of a bunch of siblings, so by the time I was even born one of her brothers had already died. My grandpa on her side died right before I was born also. A lot of her aunts and cousins passed over the years, and though we went to their funerals, I was never really close to them because I live in a different city then all my relatives, on both sides.
The only death on my mother's side that was really shocking and heart-wrenching for me was my uncle's death a few years ago. He had just retired and moved to his old hometown on this little island, and on my mother's birthday, Dec 3, he had a heart attack while playing curling. Curling is a sport for those who don't know. He was one of my favourite uncles and my aunt and cousin are the greatest, it was such a sad day. My cousin (his daughter) got married just this past summer, and we all believed that he was there in the church, there was even a lit candle at the front to represent him. My mother took pictures and when we got them developed, on only 2 pictures, right above my cousin's shoulder there was this circle. I don't believe in supersticious things, but one of my mother's co-workers said that it was his spirit, and I really do believe that because it only appears in 2 pictures, and it's the exact same circle. What do you think?
The other death that really shook me was my grandmother's death on my dad's side. I have always been told that I am so much like her, and I was really close to her. She taught me to play bingo and cribbage and cards. But she a disease called Friedrich Zytaxia (sorry I can't spell it) which is a form of muscular dystrophy. 2 years ago, she became really sick and in July we were told to come down because she wouldn't last much longer. She was in the hospital for days, and my family was over there with her. Myself, my brother and my cousin had to stay at my grandpa's house because her hospital room had so many people and my mother said that she wanted us to remember her as the way she was. She passed away the day before my birthday. July 8th.
I'm sorry for saying so much, I don't know why I did. I hope it's not too long, I didn't want to just give a one-liner, and then it turned into so much more.
~Lauren

I couldn't see Thestrals, seen as I have never seen anyone die. Death is something I see at the end of a long tunnel, so for there to be small paths coming off it, I don't want to think about it. I feel sorry for anyone who would be able to see them though.

I've known people who have died, but I've never actually watched someone die. Wait... Does a cat count? Because I watched my pet cat, Wanda, die when I was seven or eight. If you need to feel emotion or something while watching the death, then yes, I'd be able to see them.
I think it would be neat, just strictly speaking, to see them. But I don't want to watch someone die. For Pete's sake, I already had to watch my kitty die! *Sniff sniff* But like Nyphadora Lupin said, it would be cool to fly on one, even if you couldn't see it.

I may have answered this, but I'm too lazy (and a bit under the weather) to search through 13 pages!
I'm a Registered Nurse and have seen people die, so I have to say that I would be able to see thestrals. But by the same token, I have seen birth, and that is a beautiful thing to behold.
Birth and death is the "Circle of Life". One balances the other.

No I wouldn't be able to see thestrals. I came close though...when I was younger my grandpa had lung cancer. I helped my mom take of him after school he called me his #1 nurse! When he passed away my entire family was around him...but the adults wouldn't let me or my 2 younger cousins be in the bedroom. I'm kinda glad for that...but then again I feel like I didn't say my goodbyes

. If having your cat die in your arms counts...then maybe...But I don't think it does.

Yes, unfortunately, I could see Thestrals. I was with my dad when he passed away from pancreatic cancer at 58. I really miss him, 6 years later. We had just moved back to NC, so I was able to spend a lot of time with him before he died (as I had lived out of state for almost 10 years). He was also able to get to know his grandson during those short months.

If i could see a threstral? since to be able to see a threstral you first need to see someone died, which i know none of us wanted... Hermione17, I was wondering about the cat thing too...
If having an animal die in your arms counts, then yes, I'd be able to see thestrals as well. Probably just means "if you've seen human death", but you never know, right?
I think Thestrals would be amazing but if it means I'd have to witness death... I think I'll pass.
