hmm, you can only see thestrals when someone has died right in front of you, right? (Harry could see them in the fifth book after Cedrics dead in the fourth, I guess)

Well in that case, I wouldn't be able to see them because no one died in front of me.
But once there was a car accident in front of me and the driver died later on in the hospital, but that doesn't count does it?
I guess I wouldn't be able to see them

Would I be able to see a thestral ... No absolutely not. For which I am so far very thankful. I've never been around death. There is only one circumstance where I would maybe wish that I could.
If someone was dying and they needed a hand to hold, then I would want to be there for them, whether I knew them or not. I couldn't imagine anything worse than dying scared and alone.

Unfortunately, I have to say that I would be able to see thestrals.
My wife's stepfather was very ill (pancreatic cancer) and we were all there when he passed away in hospital. He was 54.
Hopefully none of you have to live through that...
Cheers!

Do you have to have actually seen someone die? just wondering, if yea, then i wouldnt be able to see them, but ive seens a few people dying, and a few bodys just after death, including when rigour mortis is setting in, creepy, theirhead stayd up as if it was still on the pillow., but never the bit where they actually die. though im not holding out much hope i never will unfortunatly.

Yes I would be able to see a Thestral.
I was with my Grandot- along with my parents and my aunt and uncle- when she died earlier this year. It was really hard to be in that position, but at least she died peacefully. I would hate to watch someone die because they've been killed.

I unfortunatley would be able to see them. My Great Uncle was in the hospital getting a quadruple bypass but the surgery went wrong and they couldn't unclog his arteries. We went to go visit him and he died right there on the bed. I was 11 then and it was sad. I think I was more upset about seeing someone die though because unlike my Father and Grandmother I never really knew him all that well. So yes I would be able to see them.

Yeah, unfortuneately I would be able to. I was at the hospital because I had broken my wrist, and they rushed in someone who was in an accident, but as they brought him in, he died. It was really sad and depressing.

i'm in the same boat that omerus is in. i can see them due to cancer. i went to visit my great aunt. i was the only one in the family who hadn't done that. so my father and i went down to see her. it was the last day there and my great uncle called the hospice people. she was on morphine. she wasn't going to get better. so he went in with an upped dosage. this was all found out later. we just thought he was giving her the normal amount. everyone except joe, my great uncle, were in the kitchen. i could see him give it to her. he was talking, saying goodbye, though we couldn't hear. i didn't look away. i just watched this scene while everyone else was talking about other things. he walked back in and called the doctor to report the time of death. she breathed very loudly during that time. when i think back on the moment, i can still hear her last breath. one of the few times i ever cried when not reading a book/movie/video game.

i'd have to say that yes i could see them. not because of me seeing a loved one die however. i'm a nurse and i work with premature babies and sick newborns. i've had the unfornutate experience of taking care of babies that either pass unexpectedly or parents have chosen to let them go. please don't think this happens frequently however, but it is difficult when it does.

Unfortunately I would be able to see a threstral.
When I was a kid I volunteered at a hospital and my job was really quite simple. I would read or play board games with some of the patients; it was really very rewarding for me. Well, there was this old man whose wife past away a few years prior and he didn't have family in the area; he was being treated for congestive heart failure and was in the hospital for about a week. I remember going into his room, chatting a bit, and all of a sudden he had a heart attack. The nurses came in and then the doctor. But there was nothing that could be done. He moved on.
Goodness, thirteen years later and I can still remember every conversation I had with this old man.

I too could see a threstal. I was holding my great grandmother's hand when she died. I was thirteen years old. I also saw my pet cat die. I wonder if that counts or if it has to be human death?

I can't imagine seeing somebody die....the closest I've been is seeing my grandma in the hospital while she had lung cancer...It was really sad for me to see her like that, because she was usually so lively. But they had her on something, and it made her so tired that she would just randomly fall asleep while we were talking to her. I remember holding her hand for the longest time while she was sleeping, wishing that I had talked with her more when she wasn't sick.
She died a couple weeks after I went home. I think the worst part was the funeral...She looked so much different than her usualy lively self.

thestrals can only be seen if you have seen people who had died in front of you. harry was able to see a thestral coz' he has seen cedric died in the graveyard. i hope i can't see a person die in front of me especially my loved ones. but if it's god's will to let me see them die, then i have no choice but to accept the great truth that they had already left me and they're already gone.

then probably i'll be seeing a thestral.

I could not.... but I have a question I have not seen mentioned (maybe I just missed it).
Why can't Harry see the Vesteals at the end of book 4 when they ride back to the train?
Is there some kind of waiting period (like buying a pistol lol) between seeing a death and being able to see a Vestral?
Would they kinda fade in or is it like a light switch?
Im just one for continuity... I would think if he saw them at the beginning of year 5 he should have seen them at the end of book four.
Or am I missing something?

Hmm... I've never actually watched someone die, but I was with my grandpa about five minutes before he died. My mum and I went to visit him in the nursing home, but he was in a really bad way and couldn't even focus his eyes on anything, so my mum decided we should leave. She kept saying how we would visit another time when he was doing better, but I knew in my heart that he was dying. He was my dad's dad, and I kept trying to call my dad as we were driving home, but the line was busy and my mum kept saying that it didn't matter. I was really freaking out, and then when we got home the nursing home called and said that he had passed. At the time, I think I blamed myself a bit for not staying with him. I dunno, it was all very scary and sad.

Yeah, Meggie... I know what you mean. I had to leave my grandpa in hospital last year. I knew he would be dying within the next days, but they wanted me to go back to university. *sigh*
It was so bad... leaving... knowing I would never see him again... I can still remember the way he held my hand when I left.
But I am glad to say: I never actually saw someone die. Animals don't count, right?) So I wouldn't see Thestrals.

I think that Jo has answered this question somewhere before, but i don't remember where. She said that Harry needed time to process what he had seen before he could see the threstrals. He was still in too much shock over actually seeing Cedrick to die to register that there was something new in his world. I kinda don't think that he was very observant right then, he was rather lost in thought!

I, very fortunately, would not be able to see a thestral. even though i am only 13 and I (very very hopefully!) have alot of life yet to be lived, i hope that i never have to experiance something so heart-wrenching and terrible. I'm sorry for the drama, but death is probably one of my greatest fears, even though i strongly believe that it is truly the "next greatest adventure"...

Hmmm...I have a really, really random question:
Do you think that witnessing your OWN death would allow you to see thestrals. For example, Nearly Headless Nick....he "saw" his own death, but now returned was an imprint of a departed soul, also known as a ghost. Would Nick be able to see thestrals?
That would be pretty interesting. Sorry about the randomness of this question....I do not know what got over me

I, in the wizarding world, would in fact be able to see a thestral.. i mean, i always wondered what they were like... anyway, yeah. A couple years back my grandma's sister was lying in bed, at home.. with cancer.. out of hospice care..and she was sleeping.. but all of a sudden she just struggled for breath, and... gave out.. :T oh well..

i believe that he would be able to see thestrals... cuz i mean.. him himself is dead...long dead, and it doesnt particularly say that another persons death has to be witnessed...just witnessed death..

This is quite depressing reading.
But I can not see thestrals.
Not something to complain about I know.
But I think that you have to see a loved person die first. It said something on JKR's website about how it has to sink in first, or something because Harry couln't see them when he was going home after Cedrics death. He had to wait for it to sink in over the summer.

No I would not be able to see one. And I don't think that I ever want to. Not that there not adoring creatures, I just don't ever want to see someone pass away in front of me. I had a hard enough time when my brother past away last spring. The way my older brother described him was sickening and I don't think I could have endured it.

Sometimes it's not too bad.
I mean, it's horrible to see anyone you know/love die, but I would hate to be able to see a thestral, because I saw someone killed at the hand of another, or because they took their own life.
However in my case, my Grandmother was surrounded by her love ones and I would have hated not to have the chance to be with her when she died.
I guess the circumstances are very different though, in that it's different to see someone DIE as opposed to BE KILLED
But I'll say on behalf of everyone else, thanks for your thoughts

Well, seeing a threstal means you've seen death. I've never seen someone die in front of me, but I've been at funeral wakes. Also, I saw my great-grandmother a few hours before she died. She was hooked up to all the machines, and about to be taken off and laid to rest in peace. So I guess I've seen death, but I'm not sure if I would see a threstal...

Fortunately, I cannot see thestrals. All I can do is hope with all my heart that such a thing does not change. Death is an idea that just really frightens me in general, and witnessing a death would make that fear even worse. Thestrals would be a constant reminder of that, so I don't even want to see one.
By the way, I picture thestrals to look just like unicorns, but smaller, and clear. Whether they actually look like that or not, I don't know, but I think I'd rather stick with that mental picture than actually see one.

I could see the threstrals. March 3rd, 1999, when I was five years old I stood by my grandfather's bed so I could be there with him when he died. I was holding his hand. I was one of the last people he talked to when he was conscious a few days before he died. He said "Mal, would you like some of this candy?" and my grandmother tells me my face lit up because he actually called me Mal for once instead of "Dee".
Anyway, I saw my grandfather die when I was five so I would most likely be able to see the threstrals.

i have a question does it matter if its a person dying or can it be an animal or a fish??? just wondering about that.

I dont recall seeing death, but I may be mistaken. we all have to taken into account the difference between murder and death of natural causes, which have been mentioned in previous posts. I have not seen either, but I have seen people already dead. I saw my grandmother who was dead at her funeral wake.
I don't neccesarily feel bad for those who have seen death, but for the ones that have died at the hands of another. nobody should see someone be murdered, it would scar you for life, especially seeing that at a young age.
