Hello . . . . . im not sure if a poll like this had been printed up, but i was just wondering if any of you guys started reading other books after you read the HP series. I think i have. dry.gif Well . . . . tell me about it!
laurahonest
No i always read. I used to get in trouble for reading to much! My parents wanted me to play sports or go outside and I would always have rather been reading! I have read thousands of books!
Princess_Celtic_Jewel
i always read. I taught myself to read because the teacher just gave me picture books when i was about five.the whole classmoanedabout a picture book, and I was reading properly. it used to make melaugh. i dont know why
Padfoot313
I am not a very determined reader, I onle read the text books I needed to, got cheat sheets from the internet and had my mom read some of the books i couldn't fine on-line. I never got into reading, it has never appealed to me. But after watching the first two movies, I picked up book three, fell in love and read the next three. I haven't read one and two yet, but I will, just to get a better feel. THese are the only series I ever read and probably the only one I will ever read.
Waddiwassi
hardly - I begin to read a book then I just end up picking up an HP book, and completely not finish the book i was previously reading. The only books that I have actually finished within the last 5-6 years that wasn't harry potter, was all assigned for school work, or books about making movies.

I always read books before HP came out, but I never used to read fantasy. I remember my sister read HP for the first time in August 1999 and she told me that I'd like it, but I was so turned off by the idea of wizards (simply because I don't like fantasy) that it took me until October that year to actually read SS. I haven't really read any fantasy other than HP since then, so I guess you couldn't say that the books changed my reading habits in that respect, but I definitely think I'm a lot more open-minded about new genres now. Before HP, I read almost exclusively realistic fiction and mystery (lots of Nancy Drew... but I was eleven, hey!), but I'm not into that sort of stuff anymore. Whenever I try to resist a book now, I always have people tell me "remember when you thought you'd never like Harry Potter...." tongue.gif

Before I wasnt so keen on reading. I stared reading the books when i was 10 and then I was hooked and still am. My parents said I should read other books and in the end i managed to. lol biggrin.gif
Hermione_Resilda
I always like to think of myself as an avid reader. I think I did love to read before HP, but just simple books because I just had learnt to read when HP came out (new language and all). But, HP did inspire me to read harder books and analyze them better, so props to J.K. (as many have said before). wink.gif
Merlin's Beard
I love to read! I never was obsessed about a book before the HPs though. My parents, both former librarians, think I read too much. dry.gif
My mom still hasn't read Harry Potter, but she has been well educated in all things JKR. I've treated her to several in-depth discussions on all of the Harry Potter books and several of my favorite theories. smile.gif

I've always read...almost to the point of being unhealthy. I read where/whenever I can, which sometimes interferes with my eating habits, if the book is really good. I remember I lost a few pounds while reading the HP series because I would always read instead of eating properly. Haha, I'm weird.

Well, as this is my own poll, i might as well submit. Yes, i have always read, but i can't really imagine myself being as obssessed as i am now. Interesting how one series of books can do to you. I am actually surprised by people's reactions. I really don't know why. Well, where i live, no one really likes to read, so i guess that would be the reason as to why i am, in fact, surprised. Good for you guys for reading. Thanks for replying. I'd like to hear more. wink.gif
Lady Oymre
No, I've always read. When I was 6 I had a bit of a reading problem (so did my twin sister) and we'd applied for this course to help us improve our reading but they couldn't accept us until the next year so my dad started to take us to the library every week to get a few books. By the time I went on the course when I was 7 I was in the highest reading group in my class (still had to go on the course though which was a bit of a waste of time) and I had started reading thicker books. I think I was 8 when I read PS and immediately when to hunt down they library's copy of CoS and but my name on a list so that I'd get PoA as soon as it was released and the library bought it. HP did spark my intrest in fantasy books though and I started reading more books after that. With my school workload now though I can't read that often, I used to read ALL the time but not so much anymore.
HaRRYPoTTeR FReaK
Nope, I've always read. But when I started the Harry Potter series, I was hooked. I reread them all over and over again to this day, because I can't find anything as satisfying... rolleyes.gif
Kaylyn
I never read anything until after Harry Potter! Maybe it was because I was hooked on PS in the third grade, but still! I think that it might be one of the few reasons that I love to read to this day.
limeXlollipop
I voted for "No. I always read." because I read much more than people I know, like my brother and mum for instance, who have never picked up a book for enjoyment. I was twelve when I started reading Harry Potter (I was twelve only a few days ago), I only started reading them in September. I read A Series of Unfortunate Events and mystery books. I have a book on my shelf that I read 7 times! So yes, I always read, but now Harry Potter has made me read much more. Now I rarely ever put a book down!
NyMpHaDoRa
I learned to read when I was three, and I always read, but it wasn't necessarily my favorite thing to do. I stumbled upon the HP series when I was 6, and I wasn't too keen about it at first, mostly due to the fact that I didn't really understand any of the vocabulary in the books. I do admit after I had really caught on, I did read a whole lot more. wink.gif

I chose "No, I always read." Even though i started reading HP pretty early on in the series like when i was in late elementary school or early middle school ( i can't remember when)... i've always loved reading... i enjoyed reading as a kid, but i didn't really start reading a lot of books until middle school... i love reading series books (like HP)... this occupies me for a while because after i read the first book of the series, i want to read more until the series finishes

i'm starting to read a lot recently because my english teacher requires us to read 750 pages per quarter and if you go more than that you get extra credit points.... last quarter i read around 2500 and i got 54 extra credit points which really helped my grade!
biggrin.gif however, my favorite book series will be HP!
*Quidditch Princess*
Nah, I've loved reading most of my life. I read chapter books in first grade and I loved it. Reading is my life, I love bunches of books, I don't have a favourite except Harry Potter.

Harry Potter books are the best and they got me into reading more books than I had before. I like read 50 pages on weekdays and 200 on weekends. I can finish OotP in 3 days or 10 hours.
hermione_lover930805
I picked "yes..." because it's not that I didn't read at all...I just preferred doing puzzles or whatever. It's not that I COULDN'T read, I just didn't really ebjoy it. I've been reading since I was about three. But now I read a lot. And not just Harry Potter, I read other stuff, too.
ginny_and_ harry_4ever
I always read even before Hp it's like a hobby for me. I think that HP a really good book not only it' contents but the way it's made more kids start reading. Everytime a new HP book comes out, basically everyone's nose at school is stuck in the HP book.
Misto
No. I never read much fiction and this hasn't changed. They can be fun, the Harry Potter series definately is, but I prefere to use my time with more interesting (i.e. non-fictional) books than with what some author's screwed mind came up with. Often enough I just don't find fictions interesting enough to read on at all
*pretty in punk*
I never really liked to read until I heard my teacher read Harry Potter to us in class. I really enjoyed the book, and eventually I read all the books that are out. I also started to read more books after Harry Potter.
got harry?
No because I've always loved reading! Ever since I was a little girl! I loved going into my own little world...books are my way of escaping from everything and just relaxing...
imtherealluna*
No, books always seemed an intrest to me. I love reading, and i don't just read harry Potter. I like reading books that are based on real people, and mostly thrillers.

I am with the majority. I have always read. Naturally I can't remember this far back but according to my parents I started reading at around 5 and would read anything that I could find. The way I came about reading HP was quite odd really. I was in the market just after midnight when HBP came out. The lines were very long but they had several smaller lines opened but ONLY for folks buying HBP. I decided I didn't want to wait in line so grabbed a HBP book thinking I would never read it. I got bored and starting reading the first couple of pages which turned into a 12 hour read until I finished the book. The next evening I went and picked up all the prior books and read them in order laugh.gif
As for other types of books I generally lean toward SCI-FI but also like some mystery/thriller novels. Several books from Douglas Preston and Lincold Child (co-authors) I have read that included a fascinating character called Aloysius Pendergast.

I've always been an avid reader, ever since I was really little. I used to stay with my Gran on weekends and would hide myself away in her big airing cupboard and read for hours and hours.

Used to read lots of Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl and writers like that. Was also a huge fan of Anna Sewel, think I read Black Beauty eight or nine times. Recently I've been reading some of Jane Austen's books, decided that I should read some of the classics. I will read most things, books, newspapers, billboards and the back of the shampoo bottle biggrin.gif.

Well, there was no use in grounding me when I was a kid - my mon had to forbid me to read... *sigh* That was the only one that worked (though I think she never realized I read still...).

I've always been into books, and there was a time when I had been through the whole children's section of our library... *sigh*
My favourite when I was a child was Enid Blyton - I kept all my books for my dauhter. And I know she inherrited my love for books, she always wants me to read for her. If I read a book to her for the fifth time, she usually knows it by heart. smile.gif Isn't that cute?

My favourite author at the present time (that is for the last five years) is Terry Pratchett.

Nope. I've always loved reading, so HP isn't the first book for me, nor would it be the last. wink.gif Of course, I was already in high school when the HP series came out so I guess age counts for something here. smile.gif People should read more. biggrin.gif Books are good.

Seeing as I was a graduate student in English Literature and teaching reading to gradeschool kids when I got the books, I'd have to say no. tongue.gif

Oddly enough, it was the tutoring program that got me into the books (I was working as a reading tutor for the America Reads program at the time). The school library I tutored at was having a book sale (where you can get books for very cheap), and I went with the class I was working with to the sale. I noticed that they had books 1-4 for way discounted. I had seen the movies and was like, hey, I can get 1-4 for less than 20 dollars total. Why not? So I did. I found that I loved them, and read through them all in 4 days. I had to go out and buy book 5 right away (book 6 hadn't come out yet. Book 5 had just come out on paperback). I read it in a day. It was a total potterfest. Then I went and bought all the books on tape about a month later, and listened to them all. Sadly, I bought the tapes rather than the CDs, so they all broke (for those of you who are considering getting the audiobooks, get them on CD. Listening Library's tapes are crap. I had at least one break from each book.). Now I have to check them out from the library. I don't have the $$ to buy them all again. Especially not on CD! smile.gif

Well I was quite young when I started reading Harry Potter. My family knew I liked magic and wizards and things, and they bought me the books. So I did read them. But I only started reading the books after the first movie came out. Then I read alot more. And now I am probably one of the biggest readers in the school. I love books.
lucky ducky
Before Harry Potter came out, I was like 6, so I wasn't very into reading. I actually wasn't very into reading untill third grade. But I read the first book a few weeks before the movie came out, but I saw it the day it came out, so I was only on the tenth chapter. I thought the movie was good, so I read the rest very quickly. Then I read all the other books. then thrid grade came hten I read a lot. So ya I guess thats my story.
paddfoot
i am always reading! biggrin.gif books are like...ah jeeze this will sound corny but books are my life! i live thru them.
alkisti
My answer is no. I have always been reading books. I have the tendency to read them very quickly and my parents used to yell at me because they thought i didn't really understand them. I wish i could read books every hour of the day! One of the authors i admire is Cathy Kelly, she is unique at writing books!
priori_incantatem
Well, Harry Potter came out just when I learned how to read. I was 4 in 1997, when the first one came out, so I had to wait a few years before I could actually read them. But I read lots of other books before I read Harry Potter. Ha ha, I remember being so proud of myself when I read a fifth grade level book in first grade.
Looooony Luna
Like most people, it seems, I voted that I've always loved reading. I used to read the classics like Peter Pan and Treasure Island that my mum would give to me to read and pretty soon I'd read anything really. I started reading the Harry Potter series when I was ten and never looked back - after reading the first book I knew I was onto something special. I have to say that the HP series is one of the only series' that I have really gotten into to an obsessive amount lol but I still love reading pretty much anything. Thats why I'm an English Literature student too rolleyes.gif
Laura
I also always read..I started reading before primary school. But I always read kids books, nothing special or so. And then, actually, I had a long phase in which I couldn't concentrate anymore..it started with another book, through which I tortured myself, and then OotP was published, and I was still in that phase...so I only read about 300 pages and then stopped, and I didn't read for 1/2 year! That was because I'd always been reading some book, I never did NOT read. So I think I needed a break. Unfortunately it hit OotP. unsure.gif but I picked it up after 1/2 year and I was able to read again laugh.gif and now everything's alright yay! happy.gif lol
Harry_Ginny777
well they just came out and my sister got me into harry Potter and now i'm like a bigger fan then her but yes if it wasn't for my sister then all of you would never knnow me and like me so much smile.gif ( HARRY POTTER ROCKS !!!!!!! )
Velvet
I have always been a bookworm, Its is just so wonderful to escape to another time/world etc and use your imagination. I particularily enjoy reading Fantasy books (more magic), with David Gemmel being one of my favorate authors. Its not just fiction books, I also enjoy reading factual books (although getting those facts to stick is harder, I'm usually sat there thinking "Oh darn I've read that somewhere but I can't quite remember what it said")

However, I have to admit that reading Harry Potter did introduce me to reading a whole new catalogu of things, namely , fanfiction - which I never considered before - and I am so glad that I was introduced to it.

I think that it is so wonderful that the Harry Potter films/books have encouraged many people to pick up a book or two, and not just young people but many older individuals too - my cousin never particularily enjoyed reading, however after reading the Harry Potter books her daughters, she started to delve int the wonderful world of literature and is currently obsessed with romance novels.
Spencer Potter
Well I was 6 when HP came out, but I didnt read HP till 2002, but I always read, Like Archies, love those.. I read some Series of Unfortunate Events and the Alex Rider series. Yay! happy.gif
HPFan792
I was never really that much of a reader before HP came out.I mean i read here and there but,not that much at all.I was more into sports and being outside with my friends.Once HP came out i started to read it,i started to read more books. If it wasn't for HP i don't think i would like reading books.
Zaela
No, I've always read. Actually when I bought the first Harry Potter book none of the other books were out yet and Harry Potter wasn't even talked about then. I just found the book in the store and was like it seems like it would be interesting, had it for a while and pushed it on some family members, then somewhere in the news later I heard that the second book was coming out and I've been hooked since.
nelliemerk
No I always REad, I just always liked to read when I had spare time and then I read more when I discovered the harry potter books.
draco_malfoy<3
Well I have always read books since I was a little kid. I read to learn and because little kids books were always exciting, especially with all the pictures! LOL. tongue.gif Once HP came out I wasn't really into it, but now i'm a SUPER fan! cool.gif I guess I started reading a little bit more since I wanted to see if other book series were exciting as HP. biggrin.gif So far HP is the best in my books! wink.gif Most of the time now a days when I do read..is mostly for school purposes. I usually read manga, magazines and comic books. LOL. cool.gif
DoubleD
No, the HP series didn't make me start reading. I was about nine years old when the first one came out, so I was already able to read and that's exactly what I did most of the time. Then it were more comics but later I read real books. I truly discovered HP when the third book came out, but then I just needed about two weeks to read them completely...
I would say reading is my life, I read the whole day, breakfast, sometimes in school, in the afternoon and in the evening. (I guess I've read the HP series about 7-13 times, the first three books more often, HBP about 7 times...)
smile.gif
bierbrodt4
yes... i admit that i hadnt even heard of the harry potter books until about when the third book was coming out. i wish i had found out about them sooner so i could have read them when i was a little bit youger.
ishadow
I always read! Even before when no one really knew about Harry Potter, I like the books a lot, I even made my mom buy me all the books, and since the 4th one, I've been buying them all at midnight, the day they come out! I get yelled at for reading them so much too! but oh well I love them too much! biggrin.gif
hermione rox
HP is like the only thing I read.

I know its pretty sad. But I don't care.
actually i started out reading the fourth.. because I thought it look interesting and I'm glad I read it, I might not be here posting this right now!
lozza-cm
i only started reading the harry potter books when the first four where out!
i remember watching the news when the second book was comming out and thinking what are they on, like someone would get that excited about a book, FREAKS!!!...i sadly admit that i didnt like harry potter:( ...then my aunty and gradmother started buying me the books and i was to polite to tell them i hated harry potter and i guess i am a bad actor because they thought i was inlove with it...so they bought me board games, computer games, posters, my birthday cards where harry potter all of which got put up ontop of my cupboard and never thouched!....

after watching the movie (my aunt took me as a treat) i loved it!!! and i ran home to finally read the books...i was disapointed in myself that i had wasted all this time not reading them..i soon became a harry potter freak and i was one of the people up at five in the morning and down at the local bookshop dressed as molly weasly waiting for the doors to open so i could buy the 5th book (the same with the sixth only i was ginny)...the posters that where above my cupboard went up all around my room i bought every book that had anything to do with ahrry potter and it grew from there...

eventually my aunt and grandmother was sick of my harry potter obbsession and tried to move me onto something else but nothing stuck...they took me on a holiday to europe last year and all i could think about was going to london and doiong that harry potter tour!!! the whole time i was over there i was reading the books. (as there was no one my ages to talk to and it was just me a 60 year old two 35 year olds and two 3 year olds) i read them on the trains in the hotels and the plane EVERYTHING!!!the whole time my grandmother was tuting away saying look at the senery... the only time i wasnt reading them was when i was site seeing!!!

the harry potter books are the reason i started reading books at all...and even though i now read books other then harry potter none of them have cought me on the level that harry does!
x-o-x-guess who-x-o-x
im actually pretty much the same as laurahonest. i always read alottt and i would always geti in trouble tongue.gif . but the harry potter series are the besttt! i've read them 7 or 8 times already..hehe..yeah..well i just cant get enough of the series wink.gif
hermione_4ever
yes. But the thing is that i was 7 when i started ot read. And PS was my firt read book. But it really opened my appetite, and i tell you, if it wasn't Harry Potter i dunno if i would like reading so much.
