Jeff
i have seen this in a lot of posts and i was wondering what BTW ment thanks
Louise
It means 'By The Way'....which is netspeak, which isn't strictly allowed by the rules, but I thought that was a general one that people would understand....but I was wrong...>.< Wouldn't be the first time.... wink.gif Sorry, Jeff.....>.<

Just for the benefit of everyone else though, perhaps I should say that I think that the following is okay because they've been around almost since the internet started and have had the chance to become pretty international by now:-

LOL - Laugh Out Loud
ROFL - Roll on Floor Laughing
IMHO - In my honest/humble opinion

And, of course, for this forum:-

DD - Dumbledore
DADA - Defence Against the Dark Arts
DE - Death Eaters

And any others that people would like to add......(with regards to Harry Potter abbreviations, that is....not netspeak. I think that list is quite long enough.

taks
Well obviously there are the books, which some people don't know (which is surprising to me, but still)
SS/PS- Sorcecer's Stone/Philospher's Tone
CoS- Chamber of Secrets
PoA- Prisner of Askaban
GoF- Goblet of Fire
OotP- Order of the Phoenix
HBP- Half Blood Prince

then there's

COMC- Care of Magical Creatures, but I'm not sure if anyone sctually uses this one here, I know peole use it in chatrooms though

hmmm I know theres more I just can't think of them right now....
joeshmoe1228
And to add on to all of that language,

MoM is an abbreviation for the Ministry of Magic.

It can actually look like "mom" and it looks really strange in this thread called something like, "Who's the mom because it's not Mr. Weasley". So make sure you capitalize and all that. smile.gif
ahola
so are we aloud to use
lol
rolf

which ones are allowed ?(if any)
joeshmoe1228
I think "lol", "rofl" and IMHO are basically the only phrases of netspeak you can use. You can't use an excessive amount of exclamation marks (!) or question marks (?). We already get your point of you use one! It's much easier to load on other users' computers.

The other abbreviations are usually pertaining to long phrases from Harry Potter books. If there are any more, you can ask the moderators.

And welcome to the forums Ahola!
tashluvsdan
Only certain forms of netspeak are allowed because... well, read the rules! tongue.gif

Here is another one...

(sp?) : Means.. you aren't sure how it's spelled... hence the SP part.

LV: Lord Voldemort ...

And it's also a rule that if you want to emphasize things, simply.... make the word(s) bold, italicized, or underlined. Your choice... rolleyes.gif

taks
Oh hears another one:
MWPP is for Moony Wormtail Padfoot and Prongs

netspeak:
Read the rules. lol and rofl are accepted but no r, u, plz stuff like that.
Jeff
i have see OMG a lot. what about it?
zyra123
That stands for 'Oh, my God!!'

And Jeff, glad you start this thread! I had a few of them that I'm confused about...

Maybe we can get the moderator to change the topic title to 'Abbreviation used in the forum' or something...just so, the other member can come to check it out if they're confused too...how's that, mod?
doomed_renascence
Great idea, zyra! I already edited it for other members to look at.

Just for future reference (and just in case anyone uses it), please do not use WTF. Even if it does not have the actual spelling of the profanity, you're still meaning/implying the same thing, so please don't use it.
zyra123
I've just stumbled across another one

nvm - nevermind (or, does this one count as netspeak?? I dunno unsure.gif )

QUOTE

Yeah, I agree with that, cause in the end, you would still read it in it's elongate form...c'mon, you wouldn't be reading something like 'W'-'T'-'F', now, would you? And it's really rude to use one...cause there are other cultures who can't accept any form of profanity even though you're just joking...
taks
yeah zyra nvm is netspeak

QWC= Quidditch World Cup, don't know how many people here use it but its really popular in chat rooms. (Although I am constantly getting it mixed up with QVC, the home-shopping network tongue.gif .)

WB= Warner Brothers, not sure if anyone uses this one here either, I know people use it on comment pages and chatrooms though.

joeshmoe1228
Is there another place we can move this topic to? It seems awkward putting it here.

Anyway,

H/Hr = Harry and Hermione, usually for "SHIPS" or Fanfictions pertaining to a romantic relationship between the two referred previously.

R/Hr = Ron and Hermione, you usually use them for the same reasons as "H/Hr".

Hmm I don't know if we use abbreviations for any other of the relationships. . .

Oh, one more! In case you don't know this, even though you should,

JKR = Joanne Kathleen Rowling, author of the series.

Good suggestion, Joe!! Been meaning to....never got around to it. I think the 'Rules' forum is the best place....

Agone
Well, thanks everybody! I think this will help me a lot when i read threads, because I donīt speak english as my first language... smile.gif some of these netspeak words are familiar, but i haven`t heard them all...
Aethonon
Hi, this is the first time I've opened a topic, hope I'm not repeating anything. But I noticed this new section for Newbies this morning, which is a great idea by the way.

In the section known as "Ships" I've seen three terms which I just don't understand at all and I'm wondering what they mean. They are:

Harmonian

Heron

Chocolateer

If anyone could be so kind as to explain the meaning of these words in the context of the Veritaserum forums, I'd be most grateful. smile.gif
Tuitus
Hello!
To the best of my shipping knowledge, those three terms are labels of different supporters of particular relationships.
Harmonian:Harry/Hermione
Heron:Hermione/Ron
I have no clue what 'Chocolateer' stands for tongue.gif, does anybody else?

Aethonon
Oh hey, now those make sense! Thanks so much for taking the time to tell me. smile.gif

Yeah, what's a Chocolateer? Not a Mouseketeer...and I can't think of any characters whose names start with 'Choc," oh hey...maybe that's "Cho?"

Hmmmm....wink.gif
Louise
Mmm...I must confess, I'm not entirely sure about the Chocolateer either, although I have heard of it. I even looked it up this afternoon (I was very bored...tongue.gif) and the closest I came was Harry and Parvati, which sounded kind of racist to me to be honest, unless I missed the point. I don't know...

Anyway, I would have been more inclined to think it had something to do with Cho and the logical partner there would be Harry. *shrugs* I don't know...I try my best to steer clear of shipping these days tongue.gif
Krieltje
I've did a search here on VTM, and the word is only used in Harry/ginny shipping treads. I guess it's for Ginny and Harry, but I have no idea why it's called chocolateers huh.gif

Okay Box, here are your questions:
1. How do you edit your poll?
From my experience, a poll can only be edited by a moderator.
2. What's Anonymous Users?
Anonymous Users are members that choose to use the Anonymous feature when they log-in to not have their name appear in the Board Statistics.
3. Tell everyone about these 2 pages. http://home.comcast.net/~popularkevin/
http://home.comcast.net/~hien.tran/
VTM does not permit advertising other websites in posts. You can either list one of the addresses as your website in the profile, or you can hyperlink them in your signature option.

If you haven't done so, please review the rules Box.
Annapurna1
the canonical list of internet abbrieviations and acronyms...
Allie
That list is great... my favorites are "IYKWIMAITYD" ("If You Know What I Mean And I Think You Do"), "SNERT" ("Snot-Nosed Egotistical Rude Teenager"), "IITYWIMIWHTKY" ("If I Tell You What It Means, I Will Have To Kill You"), and "WYSINEWYGBIC" ("What You See Is Not Exactly What You Get But It's Close"). tongue.gif

Soooo... who among you all actually talks like that online? If you do, YHGASPL! (Look that one up! laugh.gif)
Louise
Mmm...also some rather choice language via that link. wink.gif

Whatever deity you pray to help you if I catch anyone using any of that on these forums though...wink.gif Approved abbreviations only unless you fancy a taste of my Umbridge quill.........wink.gif

You know, there was a programme on TV on Saturday - Test the Nation. It was English skills this time (it's been things like IQ and History in the past) and they were saying on there that people get so used to using abbreviations and netspeak that they forget how to spell properly - and I'm inclined to agree. wink.gif The number of times I've had e-mails from people apologising for using it, but they "couldn't help it" because it's "natural". Mmm....try explaining that to a potential employer when your CV is full of netspeak...wink.gif

Sorry...I know I sound like an old...thing...wink.gif but this is really one of my serious bugbears. It's just sheer laziness on a forum. When you're texting, sure...saves time and money. But there's really no excuse for using it here.
lawks_fuster
i was looking for this abbreviation DoM (department of mysteries). i was actually using this abrreviation on the department of mysteries thread. but i haven't seen it here. is it advisable to use or not?
pigwidigon
yes it is OK here to use the DoM for the department of Mysteries..most people here know that is what we are referring to when we use that abbreviation...Thanks for checking with us though to be sure tongue.gif it saves confusion in the future!
lawks_fuster
thank you for clarifying!:D if there are still questions in my mind with regards to these abbreviations, i won't hesitate and i'll just post them in here! again thank you! biggrin.gif
_Athena_
I've seen VTM used here, and I don't know what it stands for. Can anyone help with this? (I am completely oblivios to almost everything, co please forgive me if this is somethign as simple as GoF). Thanks! smile.gif
Hallia
Well, _Athena_, I'm glad you've asked that one because I'm no expert in abbreviations, but that one I can answer!! wink.gif

VTM stands for this site, Veritaserum, which is just way to long to write laugh.gif . I had problems with that one when I first got here too. Actually, I had problems with almost every abbreviation when I got here!! laugh.gif It's a small disadvantage that not talking regularly in chats and forums with english-native speakers has
felix_felicis_444
You forgot a very popular one on your list there...

RoR= Room of Requirement...

Its used very often in HBP, OotP, and Horcrux threads, so I think it should definitely qualify as a usable abbreviation!!!

Chclateers probably refers to the scene in ootp when ginny brings the easter eggs to ahrry in the luibrary and regarded by most h/g shippers as one of the first moments between the cuolpe where nsomethiong miht be going on a bit deeper
George's Girl
hmmm. i'm not sure about this, i'm not too much of a shipper myself, but i noticed in the ships colomn that lupin ships are popular. could chocolateers refer to his chocolate didtributing tendencies in PoA?
does that help at all?

it ma y do but i have only ever cone across this term in h/g shipping so i believe that it is more likely to do with h/g shipping.

MOD EDIT: please be careful one liner posts are not allowed on the forums..please elaborate more in your posts...why not tell us WHY you feel that way
George's Girl
this isn't to help out with ship terms, but i suppose it belongs here more than any where else.

i've seen the term *squee* used semi-frequently, and was curious as to what it meant. i cant work it out! blink.gif

thank you!!!!

ps, and weasley, you're probably right, just suggesting... biggrin.gif

pigwidigon
there is a term thing for the forums (like what is allowed and whats not) and it can be found Here
hope that clears that up for you!

Also *squee* is like a happy laugh sort of thing people use when they are happy about something or excited...not really a word more of an emotion thing! hope that clears that up too! blink.gif

]Chocolateers probably refers to the scene in OOTP when Ginny brings the Easter eggs to Harry in the library and regarded by most h/g shippers as one of the first moments between the couple where something might be going on a bit deeper

V3rry true! Chocolate shippers were actually surprisingly prevalent even before HBP, and a lot of their reasons turned out to be true. The Easter egg thing was one of the biggest arguments for the ship.

Also, I think I'll do a preemptive strike on some common abbreviations:

Shippers: Proponents of specific romantic relationships
Ships: Various scenarios for romantic relationships

Books & Movies:
  • (HP)PS/SS: Philosopher's Stone (SS can also stand for Severus Snape, depending on the context)
  • (HP)CoS: Chamber of Secrets
  • (HP)PoA: Prisoner of Azkaban
  • (HP)GoF: Goblet of Fire
  • OOTP: Order of the Phoenix
  • HBP: Half Blood Prince

Characters:
  • LV: Lord Voldemort
  • McG: McGonagall
  • SS: Severus Snape
  • DD: Dumbledore
  • HP: Harry Potter

Misc:

[list][*]MoM: Ministry of Magic
[*]DADA: Defense Against the Dark Arts
[*]AK: Avada Kedavra (curse)
[*]WWN: Wizarding Wireless Network

I know I'm leaving tons out, but I tried!

Cheers,

Heres some more stuff:

Even though SNAFU technically has a profanity in it, it is widely used in many spheres of operation, so is it acceptable

J/K can mean Just Kidding

PM means Private Message

Fannon is in the same category as cannon except it means in fann fiction.

Fun stuff:

SFLA Stupid Four Letter Acronym
(nuff said biggrin.gif)

PCMCIA People Can't Master/Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms

GOTFIA Groaning On The Floor In Agony

BMTIPG Brilliant Minds Think In Parallel Gutters

IMCDO In My Conceited Dogmatic Opinion

ILICISCOMK I Laughed, I Cried, I Spat Coffee/Coke/Cadmium On My Keyboard

ICIHICPCL I Can't Imagine How I Could Possibly Care Less

IARTPFWTSIOWIM I Am Repeating This Parrot-Fashion Without The Slightest Idea Of What It Means.

PLBKAC Problem Lies Between Keyboard And Chair

Please excuse this one (It's just so funny):
ROTFSTCLMAAOBPO Rolling On The Floor Scaring The Cat Laughing My @#$ And Other Body Parts Off

TANSTAAFL There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch
cool one (would never remember it though)

WYSBANRTWYG What You See Bears Absolutely No Relation To What You Get

I like that one! I imagine something like this:

CODE
I [B]like[/B] to [COLOR=orange]eat[/COLOR]

gets you:
Football is fun

BTW: I think BTW should be acceptable because it is universal and not just used on the net. It's in the same family as P.S. although it means something very slightly different.

Cheers,
Acroman

Is JK ok to use instead of JKR? It is used not inly on the internet. If you are talking to someone and you mention something about JK, they know who you mean. Also it is used in different countries. Oh, are you allowed to use TFPWWNBE? It stands for The Former Profesor Who Will Not Be Named.(aka Snape)

tomz_girl
Hi there. I was just wondering what 'canon' meant. I have read posts with the word canon in it and I don't know what it means.

Cheers
Tuitus
Hello!
I think JK is just fine to use here.
unsure.gif TFPWWNBE? That is the first time I saw that acronym before, just make sure people know what it means by clearly saying it's (Snape) otherwise people may jump into the thread and keep asking.
Canon means the veritable literary/illustrative/media piece(s) of work that are the actual story. In our forums, canon is usually referring to the primary source of HP information-either the actual series, the Comic Relief guides (Fantastic Beasts and Quidditch through the Ages) or quotations from JK Rowling. The movies, old trading cards and the video games are shades of canon (but altered) too.
Lorelei du Lac
At this point, it's probably easier just to type out the words than try to remember all these crazy abbreviations. However, my favorite is:

PEBKAC = Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair happy.gif

Lor
yelena_malfoy
BBL = Be Back Later
BRB = Be Right Back
TTYL = Talk To You Later

=) x
Louise
No, no, no, no....

Now, before this gets out of hand, let me make one thing very clear.

The use of netspeak and personal abbreviations on the forums is strictly prohibited.

The ONLY ones that are allowed are the ones that I and other staff members listed up on page 1 of this thread.

It does state this in the rules, which everyone should please read. If I or the other mods need to poke you about this, we'll only do it once or twice before you get an official warning.

The only abbreviations that are acceptable are character names, BTW, DADA, things like that...the convoluted, obscure ones that have been listed here most certainly are not.

We want to have discussions here, which people won't have if they need to carry an Enigma machine in order to decrypt the code, okay? wink.gif

you sort of covered all of mine in 1 smile.gif

I use LV because I can't spell his name (and too lazy to check ) so I would end up having (sp?) all over the place

but the one I am guilty about and actually wanted to check is the bold thing, I've just realised that whenever I've wanted to empahsised something like 'and' I've used capitals 'AND' (not or the whole post, just one word) instead of and and *slaps wrists* - I have learnt my lesson

I am so actually personally grateful that netspeak isn't allowed, I don't 'get it' , I was on one forum and they were all talking some crazy alien language and I asked was it was and got 'l33t omg u r such a No0b' - i had to ask andi what it meant and I just thought that it was really silly to insult me in a language I'm far too old and decrepid to understand tongue.gif - so thankyou veritaserum and I love the fact that the netspeak actually allowed on veritaserum is to save time DD instead of dumbledore, but of the other stuff I saw on that crazy alient forum just seemed to me like it would taken less time to actually write the word ( again showing me age, I'll be wiping smudges off you cheaks with a spit rideen hanky in a set and telling you all to button up your coats)
Sareese
Haha...one abbreviation I had to post was OBHWF I think because I saw it on Veritaserum and it confused me for days. My friend and I hunted for a while and found out that I think it means One Big Happy Weasley Family, referring to Book 7 suspicions. I would have never guessed that! biggrin.gif
Louise
Only now I'm seeing your post, Velvet! It's so nice to have someone complimenting us on the 'no netspeak' rule because we have received our fair share of moaning about that. But as you said, it is incredibly irritating to read on a forum and leaves large portions of the fandom excluded if they don't understand what's going on.

Netspeak does have it's place - I use it myself when sending text messages or in MSN convos - but not here. I absolutely loathe it and so do many of the other staffers so as long as we're in charge, I can safely assure you that the VTM forums will remain very strictly a netspeak free zone biggrin.gif

OBHWF - yeah, not an authorised abbreviation, so very naughty of those of you who've been using it because it means you haven't read this thread dry.gif But thanks for bringing it to light, Sareese smile.gif

It just goes to prove my point - unauthorised abbreviations and netspeak cause confusion for newcomers to the forums, and online fandom in general, and thus is considered exceptionally rude and will result in you getting a kicking.

So before anyone else uses any such abbreviations, might be a good idea to have a check through the first few posts in this thread and find out just what exactly is allowed here and what isn't.

For the shippers sake, I'll allow the OBHWF one, seeing as it's been mentioned, but I think that's most of the basics covered now, so let's not have any more new ones springing up without checking with the staff first.
ginnerminny
Here's one for 'terms'. I don't understand the term 'pumpkin pie' in reference to H/Hr shipping. They seem to be completely different things. Is there a quote or incident in the series that links a possible 'H/Hr moment' with pumpkin pies? Sorry if I sound ignorant!
Tarantallegra
Just wanted to thank you for taking the time to make this thread. It is very helpful!! smile.gif
Harry_Ginny777
Yes this thread was helpful thank you very much

MOD EDIT:Hey there Harry_Ginny777, wlecome to VTM smile.gif Could you take a sec to the rules page, please? One-liner is not allowed here. Thanks. Should you have any questions, don't hesitate to PM one of the mods or prefects, we're here to help! smile.gif ~zyra
