After taking the poll, discuss your theories here...

Personally, I think it very well could be possible...
JKR basically sets us up to ask ourselves this question. She even puts stuff in the book to make it impossible for muggles to know..just so that we would sit..and think....

Good topic, David! I think it is extremely possible. I don't think it's the same way JKR describes it, but I think they do exist. I'm glad I'm not the only one. wink.gif I think it very likely. I mean, someone had to start the rumor that witches and wizards exist, and I think that someone was in fact a witch or a wizard. Makes sense, right? huh.gif
Cheers,
Amanda
felix_felicis_444
Haha...yup Amanda...but 7 years ago or so when HP and the Sorcerer's Stone came out, I always used to wonder if wizards and witches really did exist...and throughout the books, JKR presents so much backup for reasons why they could exist and why we just wouldn't know... blink.gif
hmmm...I think JKR is a witch and she is trying to inform muggles about her world in a "realistic"-fiction story... dry.gif lol...

Yeah, I think that's possible, but I don't think that's the case. But you never know...
Hermione_Resilda
It's possible. I put for 'why not'. It's kind of weird voting in this topic for me, because I'm writing this huge paper on the Salem Witch Trials due Thursday. I always thought that there was magic all around us and up in space and such. Of course, it depends on your religion as well..

This may sound a bit weird, but bear with me...

What if the world of Harry Potter exists, or existed, but on another planet or plane?

Here's why I ask:

I'm a Buddhist, and Buddhists believe in rebirth. Not reincarnation, where you begin a new existence with the same personality, as basically the same person, but rebirth, as in you get a whole new you. But, sometimes, some things stay with you from one life to the next, because you have an extreme attachment to them.

Take Mozart for example. He was writing symphonies at the age of four! How many kids can do that? The Buddhists explain this by saying that Mozart must have loved music so much that he carried this musical talent with him into his life here on Earth when he left the other music-loving life behind-wherever that happened to be.

If you apply this concept to J.R.R.Tolkien also, it fits. He said he had the story of Middle Earth in his head since childhood. J.K. Rowling said that the idea of this boy wizard, Harry Potter, just came to her out of the blue one day, and she had to write it down. What if these stories didn't just come to them? What if these stories, these lives, actually existed, and they carried these stories with them from another life? What if Aragorn and Gandalf and Dumbledore, and Harry Potter, were real people, but perhaps from the past, in another world? Mixed with things these writers knew from their current existence, they created the stories we've grown to love.

Anyway, it's only my theory, but you never know...wink.gif

YES!!! I completely agree!!! I am Jewish, but I have many Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. One of them is reincarnation..I believe in the rebirth of the soul, but more in terms of how you describe it (where you are not born as another YOU, but your soul is reborn with some of the same traits)...
It is just too...IMPOSSIBLE...for somebody, no matter how brilliant they are, to think of things as wonderful and incredible as the Harry Potter series...
and that is why i respect JK Rowling so much!!!

Perhaps JK Rowling or a relative of hers was a witch or wizard, and she is just telling their life story??? Its just so inconcievable we cannot begin to imagine........

HaRRYPoTTeR FReaK
Wow... You guys have really laid it out, haven't you? Garsh! blink.gif I'm Christian, but I think that what you, MayIHaveYourChocolateFrogs, said could really be true. I've thought about this before, but then pushed it to the back of my mind, believing it impossible. But now that you and David have said that, I really think this is possible. I also have a lot of respect for Jo. She's a real role model in my life. I really think she got her story from somewhere......
felix_felicis_444
.......NOOOOOO...Amanda you are falling into JKR's trap!!!!
hahahaha...im glad she is brainwashing the entirity of the Harry Potter fans lol!! She's just so brilliant..i cant understand how anybody can think of anything like what she has in the DEPTH that she has...
HaRRYPoTTeR FReaK
I don't quite understand what you mean. I mean, there's got to be something behind that. If it isn't based on real witches and wizards, then how in the hell did she come up with all that brilliant stuff? Maybe that's the real question... huh.gif
Cheers,
Amanda
Aethonon
Thanks! I do think that they may very well have been a part of these stories, and that they are fragments of subliminal memory, combined with the things they know of this world. Why shouldn't Middle Earth exist somewhere? When so many world cultures share the same mythology, perhaps that's because many of us were in other worlds once?

How many things are you attracted to that have no basis in your upbringing or background? How many attributes do you possess that have no source? Such as being open-minded even though you are from a family of racists? Or wanting to learn German when your family background is French, and no one in your family cares for German?

Or, loving the idea of fantasy worlds? Perhaps you lived in a world like Harry's once, perhaps that's why stories like this resonate so fiercely for you? Because if you also carry ancient memories of past lives with you, that somehow these worlds, even though they are only on a page, "feel like home?"

It's worth considering, even if only for fun. smile.gif
felix_felicis_444
hah...its just like déjà-vu...you can remember seeing or experiencing the things before, but they really havent existed...in your current life, that is.
I know some strange stories about déjà-vu...and I experience it once in a while myself...its such a strange feeling..you know you've been in a place or have heard words being said, but you have never been to the location, or never met the person.
JKR must just have a "gut feeling" about everything that she writes about...

hmmmmmmmm

Well since I am a christian it would be going against my religion and everything else I believe in to say that Witches and Wizards do exist. To be honest we dont really know and if they did exist and we were muggles then we would have little chance of ever finding out about wizards. Like JKR asys the wizarding world are very careful at keeping the identity of their world hidden. Maybe those buildings that say "Danger dont enter" could well be a school just like hogwarts lol thouhg I do highly doubt it lol. I wish Snape existed though so i could give him the biggest kiss EVER
NickHilton
Technically the size of the univese(infinate) means that it is ininfinate possibility. Therfore everything that can possibly be, must be somewhere in the universe, thus withches and wizards will exist somewhere.
gaurav7bali
I think that the existance of witches and wizards is possible ! Recently I heard a rumour too that in New York three people saw a person disappear in front of their eyes !
El cheeser puff
If they did exist, we'd never know. So yeah, they prolly do, heh.

I mean, david Copperfield is proof! tongue.gif

I'm silly!!!

Hmm, its tough... but i've always believed that wizards and witches exists. i'm buddhist, and never failing to believe what bhuddism teach me. So, after reading the HP series, i was so convinced that wizards and witches exists!!!

In this world, extraordinary, beyond our imagination things happens. Science and technology today can't even explain some. it's up to us to us to guess. Like our religion teach us, everything happens for a cause. it might be retribution, like buddhists, we believe that after we die, we reborn into another living thing, we can be blessed with a good after life if we lead a nice and peaceful life before; but if we do sins, our after life might not be so good.

hmm, so why not believe in something like wizards do exist? i mean, like in some of the previos post, they might exist but we don't know. they might be in another planet, in another universe, or in a place we could never think of. To me, i'm crazy, i believe in wizards and witches like i believe in religions!
gog_sirius
Well, honestly I've thought of it a thousand times, i think its really possible that they could exist. I have talked about it with my friends and all.. and it's just so difficult to invent a story like that detailed with so many things related.. nobody knows!! it'd be awesome! biggrin.gif
laurahonest
I don't think that they actually exist, but they could. It would be really cool if they really did exist, I would love that so much!
karsh05
yes yes i think it is extremely possible...i beleive that there are infanite dementions and that even though some dont believe their there, that they could possibly know about us...also i think that there are people who know or believe there are other dementions other than ours.
DONT THINK IM CRAZY...ITS JUST MY THEORY AND I DONT KNOW ABOUT WHERE YOU LIVE BUT IN MY COUNTRY WE HAVE THE FREEDOM TO THINK AND BELIEVE WHATEVER WE WISH AND THIS IS WHAT I THINK...NOT JUST BECAUSE IT SOUNDS COOL, BUT BECAUSE IT SOUNDS POSSIBLE smile.gif

MOD EDIT : Please refer to my post below. Thanks.

Here we are, getting very close to October 31st! Do I think witches and wizards really exist? The intlligent and reasonable part of my brain says "no", but the other side of my brain says, "sure, why not?" I'll just have to take out my ouija board and ask it! I got it two birthdays ago, and have yet to unwrap it!

Maybe, I'll open it on Halloween night... maybe not! unsure.gif
Feeder
I am personally not supersticious at all, so I don't really belive in anything like wizards or ghosts and all that stuff (except aliens- they definitely exist). But with Halloween coming up I try to get in the spirit by just pretending they're real.
RavenMist
Very possible. I mean anything can happen right? Look, as humans we are able to transfer a live moving image across the world in minutes. The technology we have invented is brilliant! It is almost like wizardry or witchcraft.

Anything is possible, maybe not here on earth (though still possible) maybe on another planet? Who knows.
0maga
I’m a scientist and a real sceptic so until I see proof I am going to have to say no way. But I like the thought I think it would be soo cool to have witches and wizards out there I would be sad because I wasn’t one of them but it would be very cool!!

Well...I see the tables have turned greatly since the last time I visited this post!

Apparently a total of 5 people think that I'm crazy (as I say all the time...I dont blame them!! I am not a psychopath, but 'insane' and 'crazy' can surely be used to describe me laugh.gif wink.gif )

2 people are actually claiming that they have SEEN a wizard or witch before. Well, you two people, join the club! I, of course, am a wizard, so I have obviously seen many as well... (I'm still quitely debating on whether these two people are really wiches/wizards, really know any magical beings, or are clearly insane just as I am... dry.gif )

However, the majority still lies in the hands of us muggles, witches, and wizards who believe that Magic is real.... tongue.gif

Lets see if we can accumulate any more votes for, or perhaps against dry.gif , the Wizard and Witch status

i think it's extremely possible! why? because i do.
there was merlin waaay back then, so why not now? i believe it, i don't need proof. it's just something i believe!

A possiblity that witches and wizards are real? Interesting...

Well, first of all, when I started reading the Harry Potter books, Iwas like, "I wonder when Hogwarts will send a letter to me," but that was when I was like, seven or something. But as I got older, I realized that you know, J.K. Rowling made up an entirely fictional story, starting from a train ride.

So no, I don't think that witches or wizards are real at all, and I'm not sure about the people who actually claimed to have seen one...I highly doubt it.

See, the only reason people actually started thinking about these things was a long, long, time ago during the witch burnings. But after a while, people started being sensible and stopped burning numerous people alive just because they thought they were witches and could do magic. I mean, honestly... rolleyes.gif

Anyway, they stopped thinking about those things for awhile, until the Harry Potter books arrived. Then people started thinking, "Do witches and wizards really exist?" So the only reason people started getting serious about these things was because of the Harry Potter books.

Did you understand that? I can be very confusing sometimes. wink.gif
Kit-Kat Katie
I think they do exsist, because why would she have all this backup information. She had these words, and the plot set out and stuff. I nessesairily don't have to see to believe here. Sadly as it may seen, they could've died out.

Jen, you're right. I'm not saying you're wrong. I agree a bit on that. But my imagination goes wild and uncontrollable at times, such as on Harry Potter....
Chacho
Nah, as much i would like them to exist i dont think they exist.
I mean i dunno i just dont think so, no extreme reason is just that I
dont picture a person with the ability to kill anyone they want
at will or someone sending all kinds of spells out of a wand.
It will be really cool for people that can do magic, but i dont know,
i think such abilities on humans is against nature.
winterriding
Yes, there are really witches and sorcerers. and i'm one of them before.

Before, i'm practicing witchcraft. i practiced money spell, simple love spells and other kinds, and they really worked for me, especially the "kissing spell that i cast". I'm so shocked and I'm not expecting that my spell will come true for just four days after casting it. it is the first incantation that I've done,,,, "the kissing spell". the only thing in witchcraft is, black curses takes long time to occurs, and worse, they backfire. But in reality, real witches do not use wands. they use incantations, chantings and candles and other.

I still know the incantations but i don't use them now because my family says that I'm wiered.

If you guys want to know some incantations and spells (money spell, love chants and others, especially the kissing spell that i tried), just PM me and i'll give you a list.
fizzingwizbee
I would like to think there are witches and wizards, but I doubt it. However if there were I think we would of heard of strange things and unexplained deaths.
Elaine
phew..good thing to think about... rolleyes.gif i, just for everyones knowledge, i voted for the second option. but after i read that SO many people believe in witches and wizards existing TODAY..i was like 'really?'..i don't know.. even though i'm an EXTREME harry potter fan...don you all..the people who believe ..its [because] of harry potter..i mean [you] may love hp so much that [you] want to believe and eventually make [yourself] believe? unsure.gif ..just a thought.

anyway i'd like it to be true too but i know that that is just another fantasy of mine..and thought of witchcraft STIll being practiced gives me the creeps!!..i feel if their are magigal folk out there they will either have to be psychotic, MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR Harry Potter fans or TOTAl dodos..no offence to people who believe..just to people who practice..i respect the Believers. sleep.gif

Well, I have to say your post is interesting. Not only do you say that you believe there are witches and wizards, you're actually claiming you are one!

Not flaming or anything, but I'm highly skeptical about your comments. Either you might have an incredibly good imagination or... I don't know....

But it seems very unlikely that what you're saying is completely true. wink.gif
PureBloodFixation
Most people that practice witchcraft modern day, of any kind are usually celebrating the earth. I know a few people who are very religious in this respect and they have spiritual rites and such. They have incantations and things that are more focused towards the earth and it's balance. Or at least, that's how they are.

Personally, I think that magick in the sense of Harry Potter is not believable. Magicks that are practiced today are generally spells and things that don't have instantanious results. A spell in this day and age will work only if you actually believe it will, just like with anything else. If you really truly believe somethign will happen, you will look for any clues as to such happenings. It's all in the frame of mind you use.

Or that's how I see it anyway.

Yes, I agree with that, but they can't actually work. It's just probably part of religion or beliefs or something like that.

And it's not always just about balance...I've heard about modern-day witches who practice "dark magic." wink.gif
Aethonon
Modern-day witchcraft is a touchy issue, because many people don't see it as a real religion, while those who practice it do--and they want all the rights accorded to them that others get, such as being able to have their witchcraft books in prison, for example.

For me, it isn't. I've known many people who were into it, and was very interested myself, for a time. But the people I met who were in it? Well...

I got the impression over time that most were not in it to celebrate the Earth or glory in nature. They felt powerless over their lives, for whatever reason, and wanted to think they could alter nature (or their personal circumstances, or make people they didn't like suffer) by using the right words, the right color candle, the right scent of incense. So they'd do spells. In another sense, they loved to go on about how oppressed they were by other religions. It was...well, I got the impression they rather enjoyed being in this "secret minority" of people who "knew the truth." What I saw for the most part were misfits who I felt needed to stop messing around and straighten out their lives.

Maybe that's wrong of me to say here, but as someone who checked it out and decided "no," it is simply my personal point-of-view.

I am sure there must be witches out there who really do celebrate nature, but--I've just never met one.

I like Harry Potter's world because in his world, the ability to do magic is mostly an inherited trait, not a way for them to manipulate people--only the evil ones use it that way. It's more like a fairy tale. smile.gif
Mercury7674
I wish Wizards and Witches exist but I seriously doubt it. There have been deaths because of people believing they are witches or wizards. For instance, a girl thought she was a witch and jumped outside a window with a broom. All I have to say is Welcome to reality! I think Magic is just some fairytale story that started ages ago. Don't get me wrong I love reading Harry Potter and I'm a HP fan. smile.gif
Jen
Well, aren't everybody who come here HP fans? tongue.gif

I like the world and magic of Harry Potter because it's such a believable fantasy tale, courtesy to J.K. Rowling. biggrin.gif That's why these disscusions come up. Simple as that. rolleyes.gif

I would just like to say. You may belive in Witches and Wizards or Warlocks or Male Witches ... but it is against my religon to belive in this. I can read harry potter take all these polls/quizes. But I can't belive in Magic/Magick.

Ok I just read post before mine. Wait, You are a wizard, or you think you are , or you just kidding? I still don't belive in Witches and Wizards, I won't unless one is right infront of my eyes and says "I'm a witch/wizard. " then does magic. But what i dont get is that they are witches and Wizards.. but the celebrate christma dry.gif blink.gif

Well, in Harry Potter's world, they celebrate Christmas. In the real world, practitioners of New Age Wicca celebrate Yuletide, and the winter solstice.

In fact, historians have narrowed down the actual time of Jesus' birth to sometime in August. The reason his birth is celebrated in December is because the European pagans celebrated Yuletide then, which was the birthday of the sun. Since Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year, the reasoning was that each day after that, the sun would light the sky for just a little longer each day--like a child growing stronger. So it was the day the Earth gave birth to the sun. It was easier for the Christians to spread the message of Christianity iin Europe f they made their own holidays coincide with holidays that already existed.

The giving of gifts, and the Christmas Tree, are remnants of the old ways.

This is also why Easter is celebrated when it is. The previous holiday was Ostara, a springtime fertility festival. The reason we still have Easter bunnies and eggs at Easter are other remnants of the old ways. Rabbits and eggs represented fertility.

Just a little history lesson. Down off my "history teacher" soapbox now. wink.gif

And as for believing or not believing, I think most religions DO believe in witches and wizards--they just don't want their followers to be one, or associate with one.
tomfeltonluvr
I think that is such an excellent point. Well some historians belive that easter and christmas are switched around. I don't really care what date it is on.
Aethonon
So true! It's more important to remember what is being celebrated, and why, than to worry about exact dates.

I'd not heard that historians thought they'd been switched around, that's interesting. smile.gif
