Reread Ootp today, since Ron and Hermione became prefect, it was first time Harry could share same compartment with them. So he and Ginny, Neville find a free compartment and they sit with Luna Lovegood. At first, Neville would rather to avoid to sit with Luna and then Harry conceive why, the description for Luna might give us an image she's not so good looking! However, it might be her odd action reduce people's opinion of her!
It reminded I was treated a wired girl for my behavior wasn't like a normal girl had to. For I was a loner and sometime I would think some funny thing after I saw some movies or TV or what, and I would laugh what I thought but my classmates or neighbors thought I was wired girl. Many years passed, some peple told me the truth is I got a good look but maybe I lack of charisma due to wired action[SIZE=7]

Luna's a bit spacy but I don't think she's *that* weird
Ceres
Luna is spacey. She's rather contempltive, and has her own sense of reality. She's sensable, though she often comes off not to be so...

I adore Luna. She gives more of an insite to Ravenclaw and shows that members of the house aren't all stuffy and book-obsessed. Luna is certainly clever and 'of wit and learning'... Though she put a but to much trust into her father's magazine...
Priori Incantatem
Luna's a fantastic character, she reminds me a little bit of myself. I have philosophies that others can't understand even if they tried (because not many people will try to understand them), and I can come off as a little... eccentric.
Naz
i love luna!! but there is still so much that we havent learned about her!!

biggrin.gif! Luna is such a great character... I'm almost certain we'll see more of her in the next two books... Luna will be a great ally for the Trio. *nods*
Priori Incantatem
Most definitely! She seems to be becoming Ginny's best friend as well, they hang out together in the halls now.
Half Blood Princess
I love Luna! I think she's a fascinating character and I can't wait to find out more about her...see what part she's going to play in the next books!
Priori Incantatem
You know what I think would be hilarious? If Luna became an Unspeakable... You know, as if The Quibbler was right all along or something, lol!

Something along the lines of Men In Black! laugh.gif
rupertlvr81
If the think Priori just suggested would happen, I would have to pay JKR myself. It would be such an odd alternate dimension... huh.gif

I love Luna and I think that she's absoutely great. She is officially my favorite character of the series, probably because she reminds me so much of myself. I'm not as spacey as she is but I definetly am NOT afraid to speak my mind, admit that I'm confused, etc. She is 100% brilliant and I will always adore her no matter what. laugh.gif

Actually, she looks a bit like me. We don't dress anything alike but from the description... smile.gif unsure.gif

I remember when I read OoTP and got to the part of Luna on the Hogwarts Express, I hated her so much. I thought she was just a weird and "Loony" girl that didn't really matter anyway...

But then I continued reading and I started to really like her, she reminded me of myself, but in a erally different way. I felt pity for her as Harry did at the end of the book, and I always found myself thinking what kind of role she'd play in the next two books, for I'm sure she'll be in them...although she sort of appeared out of nowhere.

I like Luna, I like her a lot...honestly, who doesn't like her? The random things she does and says, she's hilarious! I'd have to say she's one of my favourite characters...and I absolutely can't wait to read about her in the 6th and 7th books. smile.gif

when i first read about luna in the train i felt like i knew her all along in the books even if she wasn't metion in the 1st-4th (creepy huh) than when i finish the 5th book i found out i am like luna. people think iam weird and lunny and express myself different but one thing i am not like luna is that people like me because i am weird but some preps just think i am weird and craves attention (which i don't mad.gif ) but i still have loads of friends. i love to think sometimes that jkr put luna because tons of people can relate to her!!! thank you jkr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! biggrin.gif
HogwartsHopeful90
i really like luna....harry finds so much comfort in her.....she is a great addition to the harry potter cast!

The Lovegoods have been mentioned in Book 4 (GOF), when Arthur Weasley and Amos Diggory talked about their neighbours before using the Portkey. Jo may plan Luna as a side character, but a strong one. She has given Harry helps that few can:
- comfort in seeing thestrals
- being a loony
- experiencing death of a loved one
- interview with the press (Quibbler, later sold to Daily Prophet)
- extra hand for the battle (part of the second tier trio).

Whether she will last until the end or not, she is a memorable character.
Ygraine
I know, I was reading GoF again, and saw that the Lovegoods had been mentioned. Really i think every one can relate to Luna because, well in our own little ways, we're all crazy, just me more than others. Luna really reminded me espcially of a friend of mine, who makes up little stories as to why it rains.

'Too much washing powder'

I know it's crazy, but it makes me smile biggrin.gif There are loads of them, cloud people, she's a loon.

Also she looks like her hehehe. I really like Luna, and now she's in the books, i have no fear she'll be leaving. Can't wait until i find out who they'll cast for her in the movie!

luna is looney and great every one has a luna day as i like to call it once you realise this you become to like her.
lawks_fuster
okay guys!
for me, luna isn't weird, she's unique!
she and harry are really unique! since they experience things that only the both of them can experience!
actually, luna is one of my favorite characters in OotP! biggrin.gif
Ternian
Luna's greatest asset to the story is that she can play herself off Hermione. Hermione only believes what is in books; we learnt this from both Pfr. Trewlaney's classes and Hermione's interaction with Luna herself. Luna considers what others don't consider - no matter whether evidence exists to support her or not.

Therefore, I think her character will have some great benefit to our three heroes in the upcoming books. Harry may be forced to consider something that he would not usually consider with the help of Luna - which we have already seen.
Princess_Hermione
I heard that Luna is also autistic (Asperger's Syndrome) and I was so surprised that J.K.R. has introduced an autistic character. ohmy.gif
razzberry2
Luna does come across as a bit strange at first with Jk's description of her - her dirty blonde hair and bulbous, protruding eyes. If any of you remember Gene Wilder, he had eyes like that and it does make a person look a bit comical. wacko.gif

I think that Jk gave her these features deliberately so we would not take her too seriously. Yet as mentioned by someone already, she is in Ravenclaw, so she is not lacking in brain power.

I believe Jk has purposefully mislead us so we will be unaware how important she may become in helping the growing hub of Harry's closest supporters and allies. I think we are meant to have underestimated her in OotP with her eccentric ways and oddities. wink.gif

One thing that led me to believe there is more to Luna than what her fellow students see, is when Harry asks her:

QUOTE
'Are you sure you dont want me to help you look for your stuff?' he said
'Oh, no,' said Luna. 'No, I think I'll just go down and have some pudding and wait for it all to turn up ... it always does in the end ...'

She seemed very confident about this, so I think she is quite an accomplished witch.

My guess is, knowing that other students hide her things all the time, she has found a way of bewitching them to return to her. If you remember to, she was the only one to get out of the tussle with the Death Eaters in the DoM without so much as a scratch. blink.gif

Luna always holds her head high in the face of riddicule, and she is very open-minded and good hearted. I also very much like Luna's character, and I am sure we will see more of her. smile.gif
iluvdaweasleytwins
i read the book very quickly and i roled over this with out much thought but wut could Luna have to do with the story. She has come a long way in such a short time. She went from lony luna to one of harry's friends. She was with harry at the department of mysteries and she was harry's "just friends" date to slughorns Christmas party and she is the new annoucer at the quiddich matches. not to mention how much ginny protectes her from torment. I think maybe Luna has a bigger role in the story than i am seeing. what do you guys think? And i'm also very interested in the significance of the quibbler. why does she read it upside down? Thoughts? Comments? Please speak to me people.
xkrnt
I'm not sure as to what kind of role Luna will assume now that book 7 will no longer have the Hogwarts scene.

Did you happen to take the time to actually read book five? Luna only read one particular issue upside down.
iluvdaweasleytwins
did she really only read the one upsidedown? I did read the fifth but i guess i was just imagining things about her reading it upside down. thanx for pointing that out.
Kiwisocks
J.K. Rowling said she did like Luna alot. She read the Quibbler upside down for something about runestones or something. I think Luna might be a little crazy but she has some sense afterall and isn't quite as loony as everybody thinks.
mel_tonks
I am growing very fond of Luna and I hope that she will feature more in book 7 - really love to see her and Neville together but thats another thread.

I think Luna will become good friends with Harry etc. She was one of the only people who answered the call for help when the death eater's attacked the castle so she is brave.

She was willing to help Harry in OoTP too.

I think that the character will shine now that she has been accepted by some people and not just being ridiculed.

I really like her.
Jerry
I've said it before, and I've said it again, there has been an awful lot of character build-up for the 'inner-circle' DA people (nevile, ginny, luna) and it would be extremely silly for JK just to drop those characters. I'm expecting to see far more of them in book 7..

"'You are cool', said Harry shortly 'None of them was at the Ministry. They didn't fight with me'"
Stupefy
Yeah, I really like Luna too and I also think her and Neville may get together!

I also think that her and Neville as members of the DA will feature in the next book, kind of like a mini-order.
firewhisky12
I don't think Neville and Lina will hook up, but become/are very good friends.

i really like luna because of her fresh personality. hope she'll help in book 7, after all she is brave and smart
hjinx
Luna's funny...I loved her commentary... I think she was the one that made me laugh in HBP biggrin.gif

Yeah, I really like Luna too and I also think her and Neville may get together!

JKR has said on her website that Neville and Luna won't be getting together. She could always change her mind for the 7th book, but I can't see them together.

I like Luna. I like different people who don't go with the flow of the crowd. I think she, like Neville, has a lot to offer the story and it would be a shame to have JKR let her go a little after the big build up in OOTP
Snapelover
I just adore Luna. I think the way Harry treats her is a testament to everything good he is supposed to be. ALso everything James was not, yet, by that age. She says the mot off the wall things that she is great comic relief. However, she says things sometimes that make you feel so sorry for her. I love it that Harry asked her to the party. And I am glad Ron finally started letting her "grow on him". She is a doll and I think highly of her and Neville. Not together romanticly, but just as people worth knowing.
BadDobby
I think Luna MUST have a big role in the story. Anyhow, her name was a title of a chapter in OotP, but she wasn't a key character.
After I have read HBP, it made me think she will end up with Neville.
Elf from USSR
Luna isn't bad but so strange IMHO she and Nevill will be pair

Hi there Elf and welcome to the VTM forums smile.gif

could you drop by the rules forum link please? One line posts are not permitted as they have a tendancy to stiffle discussions. It would be great if you could elaborate a bit more of your poin in future. smile.gif

i love luna... i think she adds alot to the book, because she is always helping... and her weird sence of style cracks me up.. the giant lion hat... the radish earrings... it definetly lightens some of the intense situations in the book
ChoChang72
I think that soon she will be a official part of the "posse" But I do think that JK Rowling made her sound like a dork in the beginning. I think that she will stand out more in the rest of the books.
Allie
To drag this thread out of the dust...

I was so upset by the way Luna was treated in HBP. At the end of OotP, she was perfectly set up to have a stabilizing role in Harry's life - he's already willingly discussing Sirius's death with her, she's given him the opportunity to speak his mind through The Quibbler (see here), etc. I continue to believe that she would even be an appropriate romantic interest of Harry's, though obviously I know that won't happen; JKR seems completely wedded to Ginny.

I don't know what to think. I don't know whether the mistake is Harry's or JKR's, but Luna appears distinctly peripheral and inanely comic in Book Six - and that just isn't the way I envisioned her character. I know that sounds like it makes very little sense, but bear with me...

Take the Quidditch match, for instance. Harry clearly perceived Luna's commentary as something funny. I can't distinguish between Harry's impressions and JKR's intent, and that's what's bothering me. For a long time, I've believed that the declining importance of Quidditch (see here) and the House Cup (see here) in the series reflected Harry's shifting values - he realizes that there are more important things than sports and competitons. When I read HBP for the first time, I chose to interpret Luna's observations of the clouds and whatever else interrupted her commentary as her awareness that there are larger, more worldly concerns than the match.

But now, set aside the Rotfang Conspiracy (or whatever the heck... haven't got my book on me at the moment), Luna's suggestion that she dye her eyebrow yellow for Slughorn's party, and JKR's continued references to her bizarre appearance and brutal honesty, I'm not so sure. Maybe JKR is just making fun of Luna's character in a sense - maybe Luna really is supposed to be solely comic relief. If this is the case, I seriously don't like the direction the books are taking. In OotP, she struck me as one of the most genuine, earnest characters in the series... but now, either Harry's perceptions or JKR's writing is suddenly completely wrong.

I don't know, what do you make of it? Somebody encourage me... unsure.gif
RABH
I am with the Moderator here, the persona was groing fast and nice and in the HBP she when abit soft loosing consistancy...

I also am a loving fan of Luna, I would love to have a mix of Luna and Hermiony smile.gif but well that me... blink.gif

The first time that Luna had a big interaction with HP I heaven tough that they me end up together, they are both ocward. But this we know will not happend from JK I guess she will not have any personal relation with any of the main caracters.
Auror37
Anthony Goldstein,

I totally agree with you. Before HBP came out, I re-read all the books like I always do every summer; and when I re-read OOTP, I actually grew quite fond of Luna because she was one of those characters that provided comic relief. In a way, her personality reminds me of me, like spacing out (the Quidditch match) because you get bored with all the seriousness going on.

It is funny that with all that was happening in OOTP, the breakout of Azkaban, Mr. Weasley getting attacked, etc... Luna was one of the characters that was not fazed by it. Even her talking about death wasn't all that serious.

I agree that when Luna and Harry was talking at the end of OOTP, I actually thought that there might be more of a connection later on. To me Harry and Luna work and in HBP when Harry asked her to Slughorn's party, I thought we might get a glimpse of the connection. But other than the Quidditch commentating and a minor role when the school was attcked, she was really cut out of HBP. I really hope that she has a much bigger role in book seven, and if she won't end up with Harry, then I hope she ends up with Neville.
~*VeelaChick*~
i really liked Luna. she's quirky and funny in a way taht ron or the twins aren't. i think the main similarity between harry and luna is that they are both outcasts; harry is singled out as a hero and luna is bullied for her beleifs. i agree that it was disappointing to see her character so easily dismissed in HBP but the book had such an intricate plot that it would be expected that some of the characters roles had to weeded out.
RavenMist
From what i can see, i think the trio is really two groups of 3. Luna, Neville and Ginny, and the main trio.

Ginny was Harry's ex? Hermiones friend, Rons brother
Neville almost had the same fate has Harry and are friends with the Trio.
Luna is close friends with Neville and Ginny, thus most likely she will be staying with the now i call the hexo (group of 6) I think Luna will be important to the story.
Darth_Oz
Not intentionally treading into a minefield here but Luna really irritates the hell out of me.

Oz dodges the rotten eggs thrown in his direction

I think she brings the occassional comic relief but Fred and George are much funnier, especially in any scene with Molly (they do remind me of my brother and I...)
'You-know-poo' and 'They'll be killed in their beds' had my crying with laughter...

Louise
Aw, how can you not like Luna?! She's wonderful! All the abuse that poor girl has to put up with from shallow people who judge her on her appearence (and they ALL do...and then 'deepen' their opinions with comments on her quirky personality) and she doesn't let any of it faze her. My heart really ached for her at the end of OotP when she's wandering around, stoically collecting her things that other people have hidden from her to tease her, yet still having time to empathise with Harry in her own way. The girl's lost her mom...she's suffered, but she's not bitter and nasty. I think she's wonderful.

As for everything else, I can do no better than to wholeheartedly echo Anthony Goldstein's comments here, particularly with regard to not particularly liking the direction of the books if Luna is solely comic relief.

How come making fun of people like her and praising the behaviour of Ginny has suddenly become so popular? Do people fail to see the morality issues being raised here? Why is it okay to laugh at someone like Luna? I take it in the spirit with which I'm sure it was meant - not nastily, but just fond teasing - but all the same, I'm not completely comfortable with it.

I prefer Luna's warmth and genuine likeability than Ginny's forced brashness. Although, I'm beginning to think that maybe the camps are divided here based on personal perceptions of the characters. I simply prefer Luna because I relate to her more, I suppose. I'd rather be friends with her than Ginny.

Dear Dana

I love Luna for the same reasons Antony Goldstein and you like her for. But I don’t think she was only comical relief in this book. Firstly, her Quidditch commentary was simply gorgeous, the best one I ever heard. I’m with Ron, she should always do it. It maybe has something to do with me, I don’t take sports too seriously.

But much more important: there was nothing comical about her fighting against the DE, without Felix Felicis, getting hurt but (thanks Jo!) not killed. And I simply love her honesty 'It was like having friends', it was so sad and beautiful. She would go thru the hell for her 'almost friends'. And Harry saying 'You are cool!' 'None of them was at the Ministry. They didn’t fight with me.' was just great!

I don’t know what should be wrong with Jinny, I love her since the first book and I’m glad she accepted Hermione’s advice. Otherwise we would have never seen her relaxed and normal, since we see her only when Harry does, and she never spoke before in his presence. . And I don’t mind her attitude against Fleur, because Fleur can be veeery arrogant to the younger persons, see how long she needed to accept Harry as her equal.
hermione_rocks
i really like Luna's character a lot, not only is she there to make us laugh during the difficult times with the Wizarding War going on, but she shows that through all the troublesome times, there is still hope

i agree that luna's character grew a lot over the two books, we were just introduced to her in the fifth book and now in the sixth book, harry thinks of her as a true friend, someone he would take to slughorn's party even if people would laugh at him... there are characters like seamus and dean who were introduced in the first book who we don't know that much about

hopefully, there will be more to luna than just a girl who has a weird sense of humor
Caoo
Luna has a so wonderful peronality, and even if the times are dark and it's war, she always look at the bright side of life. When she was looking for her stuff, and Harry asked to help, she just said that it really wasn't a problem, and that her stuff always found their way back to her. Luna rocks!

I know she's weird, and believes in a lot of things, but we're all different smile.gif .

I really hope that she will be a person that we'll read much of in book 7. She is just so cool! cool.gif
Sofie
When i first read OotP, i didnt like Luna at all. She annoyed me a lot. But then, after the 3rd reading i begun liking her, and in HBP i liked her really much. She is really unique, she is different. I like the way she is dealing with all the people who are teasing her.

I think that all the weird things Luna says will come true, I also think that she was sent to hogwarts to protect Harry in book five, because surley harry would have noticed someone so strang before.

I hope they kill off Luna early in the seventh book - preferably during the holiday so we don't have to hear from her. I really, really do not like her.

i think luna's a really good character. she can be weird, yes. but she's really nice, too.
if people think you're weird then show them that you aren't and proove it cuz you don't seem to be weird to me.

Can I ask the reason for such venom, Darth?

You should know that you can't just drop a clanger like that and then just shoot off without at least *trying* to justify such a vociferous opinion... wink.gif
