So after hearing that first track at:
http://www.ateaseweb.com/ateaseweb-thestorycontinues.mp3What are peoples thoughts on Patrick Doyles new Harry Potter score?
I think it was an excellent choice for a new composer. Sounds a little like a Danny Elfman score, but never the less an excellent new sound for Harry Potter.

I think the score is good. It reminds me a bit of John Williams' work. I really love "This is the Night". It is a really catchy tune. The lyrics are amazing.

I think the score is going to be fantastic- the bits and pieces we've already heard here and there from it have been amazing. I'm thrilled with "This Is the Night"- it was a completely added bonus for me, because I love both Harry Potter and Radiohead.. It was a very daring move to make such a song for the film, since it's such a departure from the usual classical themes.... but I can't wait to get the full soundtrack!

Just downloaded and listened to The Story Continues from that link, incredible, I think it shows that they're definitely taking this movie into a whole new level, there's still parts that remind you of the previous soundtracks but it sounds more mature in a way, which certainly fits in with the film

I can't wait to hear the whole lot

From what i've heard in the trailers it sounds really good. Maybe the more adult sounds will suit the new look of Goblet of Fire. Mind you i liked the old score but i knew that would have to change before Goblet Of Fire.

The only music I've heard has been that of the trailers (not even sure if that music is in the movie) and that of the link on veritaserum a couple days ago with that yuleball song. I thought that song was ok, nothing great tho. Where have you guys been hearing other bits of the track such as intrumental pieces, cause Ive heard nothing about those. And the link you posted in this thread doesnt have anything about GoF music on it.

The music in the movie sounds amazing, they have all the songs on aol.com, it's real dark and mysterious. Does anyone know which song is the one from the first international trailer, when they're dancing at the yule ball? I think Doyle did a great job, esp. filling in for John Williams. Does anyone know why Williams didn't do this one?

i just listened to the entire soundtrack, you can find the link to the soundtrack on the veritaserum home page
it was great...
-i think the Weird Sisters songs are bit weird, but i can imagine it playing at the Yule Ball
-all the songs were very beautiful, i didn't cry, but i could feel the emotion the character was feeling during the scene
-it was easy to imagine the song playing in the background of the scene
I liked the dark songs like The Dark Mark and Voldemort, it gave a chill down by back. Some of my favorites were the Black Lake, Hogwart's Hymn, Magic Works, Hogwarts March, The Goblet of Fire, and much more

After listening to the full soundtrack, I'm rather unsure whether or not I like it.
Some tracks kick ass (eg, 'The Quidditch World Cup', 'The Black Lake'), others to me were rather cheesy and melodramatic.
I do miss William’s themes (especially the Voldemort Theme), I felt this new score severely lacked any type of theme.
However I am willing to give the soundtrack another review after seeing the film, it may be better after seeing it.
P.S Love the Yule Ball Rock Songs! (Perhaps not really Harry Potter-ish, but great). My only thoughts are....what will JK Rowling think about the rock songs?

I absolutely love the soundtrack!
Patrick Doyle did a brilliant job. My faourite is "Voldemort" and "Another year ends".
The Yule Ball songs are great as well. Not really potter-ish, but what else can we expect from the Weird Sisters

I agree with crjeong, some tune were very well structured but most were, (in my opinion), totally unsuited to the film. The music was good I would listen to it normally, but for the film I say, NO!!!

I have to agree with you there. The old scores had the same theme and feel throughout all the songs. in This soundtrack however the songs seemed to all be independent of eachother in a way that they don't compliment one another. It's almost as if they are a bunch of instrumentals pulled from different movies and because of that dont seem to mesh. Perhaps my opinoin on that will change once i have then the movie though.
the harry potter love theme does creep into a couple of the other songs tho, so that is one thing that pulls a few of the songs in together.
They are, none the less, beautiful songs though and I do like them. Looking forward to hearing them with the movie

I am very disapointed by the soundtrack...
In the first three movies there was that special feeling, that... that "harry potter" feeling, but here I don't have it. Especially in PoA the soundtrack was great, I loved window to the past, a theme that came back in a lot of songs. And of course hedwigs theme which came back many times.. This music looks like classical music from bach or beethoven, not like a film theme! there is no 'main theme' coming back every now and then, there's no magical feeling... the songs all look like eachother, as though there played by the same instruments.. and i listened to cedric diggory theme, I though that one would be very sad and emotional- but it just wasn't. It just.. doesn't fit.. thats why I voted bring john williams back in the main veritaserum poll, but a lot of people don't seem to agree

don't get upset with me please

I think what is missing from the soundtrack is John William's sound of the fantastical fantasy sound. William's sounds where so haunting and beautiful. They created the world of Harry without having to see the movie. Doyle's music is ok, but lacks the fantasy sound that makes up the Potter universe. [FONT=Geneva][COLOR=red]

I have to echo Lynns feelings on the matter here. although I'll admit, I haven't heard much of the soundtrack, only what has been featured in the latest clips.
The music sounds a little 'worn' to me, like I've heard a thousand times before in films. It sounds a bit 'old hash'. Though it wont put me off going to see the film initially because maybe we haven't seen a true representation of the entire soundtrack, and of course, the sound quality isn't what it should be.
An end note: I just hope it lives up to the impeccable standards already set by John Williams.

I'll admit, I was a little skeptical when I first heard this. I was sure I wasn't going to like it because Williams didn't compose this, but I'm very pleased! Doyle does depart from the traditional themes a bit, but I think they're appropriate for the movie. It's darker and more mature! Now I'm even more excited about seeing the movie!
I especially liked "Rita Skeeter" - it described her character perfectly.

Why did John Williams leave? The So-called "Soundtrack" basicly sucks. The OST that doyle cooked, would fit to a movie called "Teletubbies" .
Have fun.

Really, I didn't like the soundtrack much. I was disappointed because I didn't feel the HP feeling too, like Lynn and razzberry2 said...it was a bit boring... I was sort of not enjoying it. I do like the Hogwarts march, Voldemort was okay, but I think it was too long. yes, i do agree with Nickhilton, the story continues was quite good. but after all, both john williams and patrick doyle are good composers, they did their best for the movies.

I have the CD of the soundtrack on its way from Amazon.com. Having heard the music in the movie --- I thought the songs for the Yule Ball were great and I also liked the instrumental music during the closing credits. I was a bit too engrossed in the film to pay much attention to the music during the film itself, or the Voldemort scene. So I'll have to listen carefully once I get the CD.
Edit --- I got it earlier today and I love it. My favorite tracks are "The Quidditch World Cup," "Golden Egg," "Neville's Waltz," "Underwater Secrets" "Hogwarts' March" and "Magic Works."

There's a song during the movie that plays while Dumbledore is speaking to the students about Cedric's death. I reaaaaaaaaaaaaally like that song but I havn't heard it on any of the available GOF soundtrack clips...does anyone know what that song is called and if it is on the soundtrack?

The more I've heard on the clips, the more I think that John Williams was rather irriplacable.

I still haven't seen the film though, It comes out on Thursday here, so I will reserve my final judgement until then, but really, I'm not going in with very high expectations as far as the music is concerned.
I agree that the soundtrack to POA is possibly one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard and it was one of those that should have won an Acadamy Award, though cynically, I know why it didn't.

It was perfection personified as far as I am concerned when it comes to recreating the magical world of Harry Potter.
Maybe I'll walk out from the end of the film and say "wow, the soundtrack was great", however, I suspect I'll walk out not really noticing it at all considering how much else to the film there is. Still, better not to notice it than to hate it.

I can say that I love especially the music when Harry is performing the second task. God, it's incredible! Also when Durmstrang boys arrive at Hogwarts, making their performance... my jaw dropped. I like the music and screenshots in this movie. Another thing is creation of most of the characters...

i quite agree with you..it did lose that certain "hp feeling"..but it still wasnt disappointing..it just made the movie entirely different from the 1st three in terms of the music used..to put it simply the soundtrack was just more mature..

I tought it was good, I got the CD for Christmas... but I agree that John William's music was more HP-ish, it was more typical to Harry's world, more magical... The thing I really loved, tough, is the music from all the GOF trailers (the first one, with the trio seen "growing up", is from John William; the second and third ones, which came later (this fall), is from Patric Doyle... I think.) ! I'd say that music was even better that what we listened to in the film itself; it was absolutely great, but it's not even on the soundtrack!
ARRGH.
It frustrated me also that they put in the late trailers some scenes that were not even in the film (Ron saying "I love when they do that", Harry saying "I can feel it"...) — But that's another story. I hope they make an extended version DVD, tough, it would be a little LotR-ish but it's an awsome concept.
Anyway; the soundtrack was good. Does anyone know where I could possibly find the music from the trailers, or if it was somewhere in the film I didn't notice, or if it's on an extra soundtrack... ?
Thanks.

EDIT:
I just learned that the music from this "second" trailer (see
here for the trailer in question) was not by Patrick Doyle or John William but by a firm named
Magic Box (click) who also made the music for some PoA trailers along with some from several other movies.
As for the "third" trailer, I haven't got the adress but there's something like it in the GOF vids section of Veritaserum, and I don't know if the music is from Patrick Doyle or Magic Box.
And for the official Theatrical Trailer (it's a different one, go on
here, it's the official GOF site), well, this one may be from Patrick Doyle, and there may be something similar (or identical, of course) in the Soundtrack. But I'm not so sure.

I am... disappointed. Extremely disappointed.
The movie was good, I'll give it that. But, after the third time of seeing it (so I could really focus on the subtle elements like the music), I have to say that Patrick Doyle, while admirable in his attempts, failed. His individual pieces do well to capture the mood of each scene throughout the movie, but it lacks a binding force. John Williams was able to create music that brought Harry Potter to life and off the screen. His music can be linked piece by piece throughout a movie, such as Star Wars or Harry Potter, by subtle recurrances of central themes in different sections of the orchestra, and the music invokes images of the film without it [the film] even running. All in all, his music is majestic and magical.
On the other hand, Partick Doyle's style is a bit different. Unlike John Williams, Doyle is able to create individual and darker undertones to any scene. His music is much darker throughout the film, but it lacks the overall unifying quality that Williams has let us expect from Harry Potter. The opening rendition of "Hedwig's Theme" with the strings was original, giving an eerier feeling to the film from the beginning, but there is something wrong with not hearing the brass supported by runs in the strings, making the sound less like what is expected in Harry Potter.
As an original music score goes, Doyle did the best he could with portraying the mood of the characters from scene to scene, but he lost much of the overall picture that Williams easily presents. For originality, I applaud Patrick Doyle. But as far as fitting in with the film, I say he only achieved an average standard ('A' for 'Acceptable'). I sincerely hope that John Williams is back for the fifth film, as he has made Harry Potter what it is.
(And I hope my rambling doesn't fall on deaf ears...

)

I got the soundtrack the day it came out and i LOVE it!
I think John Williams was an excellent composer and i loved what he did with all the music. He made the films magical and obviously, he gave the films the famous HP tune which everyone knows.
Eventhough the music was composed by Patrick Doyle this time, it still is a really great album and i love the music so much. Without music, a film would be nothing. So it plays a pretty important part in the life of the film itself.

I was disappointed when I got the new soundtrack.
The harry potter theme appears only two or three times in the whole soundtrack. I think it has lost the "magic" of the last ones. Well, I like
"The story continues" and "The Quidditch World Cup", the rest of the songs is ... er ... boring. It was a waste of money if you ask me.

In school I find myself randomly humming the songs....I and in LOVE with the song Magic Works..and the Hippogriff song its soo funny..the Cedric death song is sad but really good as well. I went online for the lyrics for the Weird Sister songs...it took forever but I ended up finding them...

I thought it was good, but I miss John Williams composing the music. I'm a huge band geek, and music junkie, and John is one of my favourite composers. I think he did a better job thanPatrick Doyle, who did GoF. I mean, PD got the general feeling of the emotions in the movie, but JW could have done better.
Back to the songs, my favourite has to be Harry in Winter and The Maze and Death of Cedric. They make me cry every time I listen to them. PD was good in his own way, but I still missed JW.

I have all of the soundtracks to my favourite movies so naturally I have all the HP ones and I love them all, they're all different, Patrick Doyle added something new to this one, the people are getting older, characters changing so it's only natural that the music is different. My favourites are the first song, as it has such a good memory for me, it was the first song I heard in the cinema and people were screaming and cheering at the screen! I also really like Hogwarts march and Death of Cedric.

I love the soundtrack for the forth movie, and I'm being differnt in saying I like the score for this movie more, over all, than any of the others. Because, espically in Cos, the whole movie sounds like Hedwigs theme. PS is pretty good, the only other song that I like other than the theme, is the chess game. Cos as I mentioned is...monotone. PoA was clearly the best of the three, John Williams did get work in this one, but I like Patrick's music better over all anyway. Gof's score has such life, I love it.
