I agree with you sooo much that Ian McKellen should be Dumbledore, because Michael Gambon doesn't really have the characteristics of Dumbledore (which Richard Harris was perfect at, but its too sad he died). Ian McKellen can do that soft and calm voice, and he looks a lot more like him ( in Lord of the Rings). Me and my sister thinks the future Harry Potter movie are not gonna be that good with Michael Gambon, because he doesn't have the calm voice or that calm smile.

I've heard that Tian Benjamin (Angelina Johnson) has withdrawn from the film, due to other commitments. I also herad that Jamie Waylett will be quitting half way through filming. Any thoughts, please?

I think this was serilousy (sp) one of the WORST castings. I mean, did anybody else imangine Umbridge as an old, fat, lady with gray CURLY (not wavy) hair??? Just by the look of her from the pictures they got everything....wrong. they should have let JK pick people.
Unless, they are trying to miss lead eveybody. They did say that so far NOBODY knows anything. What if they purposly did this so then when in theaters everybody will be shocked because what they showed us before the movie was VERY different!

Nov 5 2006, 03:45 PM
I believe that we should give Imelda a chance before we pass any judgments on her. The audience has yet to see any scene from the movie and who knows she may surprise us all. But then the castings in the movies have been quite different from what the characters were perceived to be initially.
Dudley and Petunia are blond, while Vernon is black haired. But in movies it's quite the opposite. Harry Melling does not look like a pig, as Dudley is so often described. Fiona Shaw actually makes Petunia Dursley look quite graceful and definitely not the horsey pale character the books describe her to be.
Hermione is described as being plain, but Emma Watson is quite a pretty young girl and she's actually given Hermione's character quite a makeover.
Sirius is described as a tall person, Gary Oldman though not tall, brought Sirius's character to life like only he can and brought in such a huge fan following for Sirius.
Snape is described as hooked nosed, tall, thin and pale and definitely unattractive in books. Alan Rickman has transformed him into a good looking, intense silently brooding person with a sarcastic touch, and consequently led to a huge rise in Snape's popularity.
Neville is supposed to be blond, but Matthew Lewis is dark haired and he plays Neville absolutely true to character.
My point is that several characters have undergone a makeover in the transition from the books to the movies, so lets see what Imelda come up with before we write her off. I for one think that in the stills released so far, she gives off a fir impression, but what I would really like to see is how she brings about the sickly sweet tone in her speech. That's Umbridge in her true essence, a slick tongued toad.

I totally agree, Mayfair!
I've always thought that way too much emphasis is put on how characters look. I know that it's important for characterisation to an extent, but if I had to choose between someone who looked like the image in my head, or someone who could
act (especially as well as Imelda does), there would be no question as to whom I'd choose. I am quite sure that Imelda will surprise many people with her performance, if it is anything like her performances of previous films. Wasn't she nominated for an Oscar a year or two ago for Vera Drake?
I have complete confidence in her. She's a very talented woman, and from the pictures I've seen, I just can't wait!

Ok there is such things as makeup, fatsuits, Dudley had a fat suit, I think she looks fine. You can curl peoples hair you know? So I think she could be just fine the way she is.

It will be the best 2 minutes of our lives

I personally think Nat Tena's going to be an excellent Tonks. I saw that pic at the link that person posted (can't quite remember who--sorry), the one that's B/W and she is HOT! (Er, from a girl's perspective, that is...yes, I am a girl, depsite the name 'baz'). How can you say she's not pretty?! But it's like that other person said (Oh, jeez, I'm usually good with names), it doesn't matter how she looks. as long as she has the pink hair, because it's the thing everyone associates with her (like potter and round specs, hermione and bushy hair, Mad-Eye with the freaky eyeball).
I remember seeing David as Lupin for the first time and I was like '...no, no it can't be...it has to be the light...he looks
nothing like who I pictured as my dear Lupin!' but now I've gotten over it and guess what? he turned out to be an excellent Lupin (Though others think differently) despite what he looks like. Someone might have pictured David as him, anyway.
The point being (I
do tend to go off the topic, don't I?) is that we can't judge her on how "Tonks-ish" she's going to be until we see her act. They could have chosen someone that everyone loved and went 'yeah, she looks SO much like Tonks!' yet if the general consensus was that she's a bad actor (which I know she isn't--I've seen 'About a Boy' too), people won't care what she looks like at all because they wouldn't think she's "Tonks-ish" because she doens't
play the role like Tonks.
Well...that's what I think, anyway.

Er. Not meaning to brag but I've seen a clip with her standing (unaware) infront of the RoR. And also a clip of her giving detention to the DA.
She is
fab as Umbridge. She does the whole sickly-sweet/mean voice-thing fantastically.
You can really hate her!
I'm not too bothered about the look but she does pull it off beautifully!
Just you wait and see.

I've seen a couple of short clips of Nat Tena as Tonks.
Her cheekie faces she pulls are
perfect...totally Tonks!
Everyone should be very content.
My fav. face she's pulled is very early on in the movie whilst they're flying over London.
PERFECT

it is soooooo stupid!! i cant believe it! i mean it is just arg i mean the woman in the pictures looks like a nice little woman that wouldnt dare make Harry write with his own blood! but from what i read in the book she looks like an evil toed who loves to make Harry suffer! it is sooo anoying

I was on set over the summer.
This movie is gonna be fab.
Especially the Ministry of Magic!
I'm pretty sure that it will only be featured very breifly but it's breath-taking.
Nat Tena's Tonks'll be my fav character I reckon, as well as Helena Bonham Carter's Bellatrix Lestrange

I was over the moon when I found out that she was going to play Bellatrix. She's just so perfect for the role.

I wonder if the "older" members here agree, but I think she has a kind of Nina Hagen-ish look. I wouldn't be surprised to hear she's observed her - anyway her look, especially the make up - makes her look like Nina Hagen's sister.

Oh god... After I've seen the trailer and that Behind Screen from Abc, I have to say i'm stunned. She is perfect, she looks scary, but she also has that beauty JK was talking about in the book. In the fight scene i think she's absolutetly remarcable.
My opinion, this was the best choice they could ever make. I think that for this movie, all the new actors are the perfect ones for that character (evanna on 1st place:P)

Hmm i believe she is a good choice. She has that toadlike face (no offence) I don't mean that she looks like a toad, but she has some aspect

... And her voice, her was of walking, seems so Umbridge-ish, i really like her. I think thats the best choice they could make.

omg i am like in love with ms. carter right now. i watched the behind the scenes stuff that abc family aired during their harry potter weekend and omg she i just perfect for bellatrix. esspecially the outfit and the facial expressions. i love the outfit tho lol i just love it to pieces. not to mention the facial expressions are great. im just eager to see more of her or to hear her speak some lines. i wonder what her wand looks like cuz all the wands now kind of reflect the personalities of the people they are wielded by. so ya i just love her shes the perfect person to play this incredible character.

Well I was a little sceptical when I heard she was cast as Bella as the only think I had really seen her in was Charlie and the Chocolate factory and I just couldn't picture her going from that to some horrible witch, but then I saw big fish were she's a witchy/old hag lady, then I saw her in the trailer and I feel guilty for ever thinking she couldn't do it. I love her now, she has this amazing stance, and the way she holds her wand, and there's the great new video's that are on here somewhere and she talks a little about her role and she is so 100% commited I am so confdent now and I wish she was in it more, her voice sounds cool too, but I think she looks the part so well...oh the way she holds that wand and she stands....she will have me on the edge of my seat

isn't Lily supposed to have red hair? i can't remember...you can't really tell on mugglenet's picture...

I'm really happy with Helena! Helen McCrory was not how I pictured Bellatrix at all. Helena is better. I can really see her taunting Harry, like in the book...

I'm happy with WB casting...I'm not always happy with the director, but the casting is great. Example: Michael Gambon would be good as Dumbledore, but the director makes him really angry all the time. I hope that won't happen with Helena.

I think that Imelda Staunton is perfect for Umbridge! (No offense to her) She looks exactly how I pictured her, and has that aire that is a fake sweet, really evil underneath

! I do not think that they could have made a better casting.

Jan 10 2007, 09:13 PM
I think that they picked her perfectly. She isnt supposed to be some evil disgusting person, but more of someone who thinks they are perfect and they are in charge. The reason she wears pink is to show that she is like "royalty" or some official, more important person than the people wearing black robes. I really dont mind but i do think the pink is alittle much (although thats not her fault).

You know? She doesn't really look like I thought Umbridge look, I mean she is kind of close, but not really what I thought of. I think bill nighy will be perfect, and too the person who said he was to tall and handsome, they can do anything to him with a computer . did you see him in POTC 2 - Dead Mans Chest. Nighy really is a great character actor, he would make the movies even more amazing. And by the way, they shouldn't cut out Dung. Even though he seems minor, he will probably turn out to be big. And even if he doesn't, he really has a great moment with Harry after he steals the Black goblet.

OK, now i know i havent been here all that long. cant get net signal at all in most places. OT.
but Gambon, i think has done a great job of playing DD.
Gambon admits to not having read the Harry Potter novels, so he is not "upset" when a significant story change occurs in the conversion to film.
the key words here are "Not Upset, Significant Story Change & Conversion to Film".
if the many respondants will take notice the books are converted to a script by Film Writers. if Gambon plays DD in a diferent fation than your use to reading please note the Film Writers said this is how its to happen and the director said do it like this or that. i'm sure that the partrayal of the parts is the sum of ALL parties involved. so please stop bashing Gambon, he has shown he is an excellent actor.
samsmom
Jan 21 2007, 03:50 AM
I'm not saying that Gambon is not a good actor. I'm sure that he is. What I am saying is that an actor who has read the books and knows "who" DD really is, will act the words written for him as JKR's DD would have said them. This DD is not our DD. He is a different character and will not create the same sorrow and loss when he is killed in HBP, that DD should.

I totally agree about the blank slate thing. . but think how cool it's been to have some familiar faces around! Sirius Black by Gary Oldman has brought the character to life! Snape, McGonackle, Richard Harris, Lockhart. . every new film has to have at least 2 or 3 famous Brits to tie it into our times!
But I can't stop seeing the little Natalie Portman signature boxes here and thinking how great she would look as tonks.
Natalie Portman with pink hair, now that's hot.

I pictured Umbridge much more toadlike. I pictured her like...Alyson Reed, only with darker hair. For those of you who don't know who she is she's on imdb. But i hope she is mroe evil than she looks. Because she doesn't look evil at all, she lloks like some mom who is seeing her kids starting trouble in school. She's suppossed to look like some powercrazy woman who wants to ruin Harry's life.

Jan 26 2007, 08:42 PM
In my opinion the lady hired to play Umbridge is far too tall. She has a neck. And she doesn't look "squatty" enough. Also I was disappointed that the hairband was not showing a black bow that looked like a fly on her "froggy" head.
Appearance aside, I think she may make a good actress to play this part.
