britishgurl32
hello, I was wondering if you could what would you change about harry potter, what would you want to be different? Anything at all? I would probally have serius and dumbledore come back. Anyways hope to hear your replies!

More magic, more action and the last two books (5 and 6) to have been more 'stand alone' rather than just part of one large book (1 - 4 felt more complete).
britishgurl32
THanks for your reply i appriciate it!

Heya Britishgurl32! Juat a reminder that one-liners aren't allowed on the forum. It keeps things running more smoothly and more interesting if you elaborate on the idea a little more. But as well as that, you don't really need to thank people for replying- threads will get added to as people have something to say and voice their 2-cents on smile.gif

As to my opinion on the topic, I'd like Sirius to be alive still. I understand the idea of Harry having to be alone, but I still didn't like it. I'd also maybe cut down on the relationship focus a little. It really bugged me in HBP, I just thought it got a little out of control and too heavily focused on. I also agree with the idea of making books 6 and 7 seperate from each other. I think I enjoyed HBP only because it was going to be part of a bigger book smile.gif
Krieltje
What I would change... The first thing that occurs my mind is that I wouldn’t want Sirius to die. But like Pixy said, Harry has to walk the road to victory alone and I respect JK for making that decision (that includes her decision to make DD being killed).
I don’t think there’s anything else that I would want to change.

Oh wait there is, something that also bugged me a bit was all the shipping stuff in HBP. It was just too much for one book.

One thing I'd change is never introduce Umbridge. Some characters that people hate are necessary for the plot and action but I feel the fifth book could have been a lot better without her in it.
George's Girl
i think umbridge was way important to the story line, and leaving her out would have left a gaping hole in the story. so much would not have happened the same way without her. thats not to say i don't hate her. you cannot read that book without hating her. the plot just would have been hollow had she not been introduced.

anyway, if i could change something, it would be lightening the ships in book 6. i agree with pixymajic (i seem to do that alot hehe) that it was a little to heavy in the whole boyfriend/girlfriend/jealousy stuff. i just hope that book 7 isn't some corny teen romance. i don't think i could stand that. oh, i would make the weasleys life a little easier too. its not fair that such a lovely family should have it so hard. i think they have been put in such a position for particular reasons beknown to JKR, but it would be nice to see them a lot happier.

oh, and i'd have draco get in trouble a lot more often. little ferret.

Fifty points to you for saying this, my friend.

If it were up to me a lot of things would change. It'd be nice if it were less obvious who was going to die in the books. Every single time she's had someone die, I knew it was coming because there's a forumla. When someone gets reintroduced into Harry's life and serves a semi-important or important role to the story, they're toast. It happened to Cedric, Sirius, and, of course, Dumbledore. It'd also be nice if the plot lines were a little less forumlaic themselves. Prime example is "Goblet of Fire": As soon as I read the synopsis on the jacket sleave, I knew Harry was going to be in the Triwizard simply because the story probably wouldn't have stood without him being in it. Some things are just a little too easy to see coming and it tends to make the stories a bit dull.

The romance in "Half-Blood Prince" was unbearable...probably the only part of the book I didn't care for. I understand romance being an important part of a young person's life, but...it just got overly catty and omni-present throughout the story. Less is more. Really.

I'd also probably give "Order of the Phoenix" a huge re-write or knock it out of continum. The plot-line with the overbearing, all powerful government was far-fetched...I think if MOM were to do have done a cover-up, it should have been more subtle because A: The more obvious it is to people they're covering up something, the more suspicious they will get of the government and B: subtlety is a lot more whicked than what they were up to in the book. Umbridge was terrible; a two-dimensional villian and not anything more. There were no real shades to her character; she was incredibly dull and infuriating to read because I had expected more out of her character. Harry's teenage angst was the third thing that I found intolerable. No one should care about a hero who isn't being a hero. There's nothing but our past appreciation of Harry to hold our interest as he lashes out at the people that deserve it the least, his friends. The book was just a pity party for Harry and it was terrible to see. I like my heroes not wracked by angst and the horror of their miserable lives; I like them to buck up, take what they've got to work with, and try to make the best of it. Lupin's a far superior hero because he survived being a werewolf but doesn't moan or complain about it; he doesn't waste time feeling sorry for himself when he can be a nice person and try to help other people.

Alright. I'm done with my tirade. As much as I don't like the books, I can see that they still have value and there are still a lot of things right about the books, like the Weasley twins, Remus Lupin, and Draco, the bouncing ferret. These are the things that still keep me coming back and will until the final book.

I dont think it would be too hard to continue with the story by putting someone else in place of Umbridge. The character to replace Umbridge could still be evil but just not to that extreme. I find when I read OotF I dont enjoy it as much when she is in the scene. I think it is because of her that the fifth book is my least favorite Harry Potter book.

And SennaWells I also agree with your part about the romance in HBP being unbearable. It makes me sick when i read that part of the book.

There are a few things I would change.
First of all I would want Sirius and Dumboldore back alive. They were so cool, but now they are dead! eeek.gif
Then I would have never had Ginny and Harry going out in the first place. They are like brother and sister! In the fifth book I found out that Harry and Ginny are kind of releated because when Harry looks at the family tree the Weasleys are there and so are the Potters!
I would also change the fact that Neville's parents are crazy. I would make them sane. I felt sorry for Neville when I found that out. sad.gif
vortext
Harry's teenage angst was the third thing that I found intolerable.

My mate found Harry experiencing the snake attacking Mr. Weasley more bearable than Harry’s angsty love life. I had a huge laugh at that one. biggrin.gif

I personally hate the Time Turners! I’m glad she has them all destroyed in OotP. With time travel you can undo any plot and it makes all events more shallow to experience.

I also don’t like how dark JKR is going in her latter books. She at her best when her imagination runs with whimsy. Other than Argog’s funeral where is the fun?
*pretty in punk*
About the thing I said about Ginny and Harry Being related, I'm not a 100% sure if I am right. If not, then forget that I ever said that.
Tigers Eye
Hmm...changes. Although the books are fantastic (as we all agree hopefully) there are one or two things that i would like to change!
No.1 The amount of kissing in book 6 revolts me! Its supposed to be hilarious with Ron and Lavander but its just sick! I would definatley lessen down that!
No.2 More apperance of Voldemort! He makes it so much more interesting and I was actually dissapointed that there wasn't a big confrontation at the end of the 6th book
tuni
I want to change many things in the Harry Potter series,
1. A come back of Cedric.
2. Change the DADA teacher in the OotP.
3. A come back of Dumbuldore and Sirius.
4. Also returns of James and Lily.
ginny_1991
What i would change of Harry Potter is Dumbledore´s death, I wouldnt have made Ron and Lavender date, it would be a lot better and easier if Hermione and Ron just got together once and for all. I would also change the fact that Neville´s parents are mad, it would be so much better if they were sane.
legorii
I would have had Voldemort destroy WAY more people then he did, and eventually have him win the war. Then one day a wizard, Legorii, would rise up and one day defeat Voldemort, but become corrupted by power and once more plunge the whole world into darkness.
lozza-cm
i would probably make ahrry have more sarcastic one liners i see that side flare up in him but it doesnt really turn out the way i want it to most f the time also i want to dursleys to now just how famous harry is and everything he has done since going to hogwarts. i dont think they would treat him any better but just so they no that millions of people no his name and would be angry if anything happend to him.
Thegirlwholived
1. James and Lily would come back.
2. Dumbledore and Sirius would come back too!
3. The Marauders would get together.
4. Harry and Hermione would get together!!!
5. And if Harry dies on Book 7, I'd want to change that.
After the Burial
The one thing that I would definitely change is the Deathday party in CoS. I hate knowing that the second year was 1992. I wish that there was never a time frame put on the books because so many people have gone on tangents about wrong timelines and such. (I apologize to anyone who has done such things.) This detracts from the continuity the books do have (which is rather amazing to coordinate seven books into one timeline).

Secondly, I would include more action in OotP. I know it is supposed to be a cat and mouse position in the war, but at times the plot was stagnant. The pages so not fly by as quickly as the other books.
X-Girl
1. I'd bring Sirius back.
2. I wish Fred and George and Peeves were in it more.
3. I'd bring the DA back
4. I wouldn't have killed Cedric, I know it was important but I rather liked him, I like Hufflepuff.
5. I'd have Hermione and Krum get together.
6. I'd make Neville's parents sane.
7. Have the kids have talked back to Umbridge more, maybe throw a few hexes. biggrin.gif
8. Bring back Fluffy.
black_roses
I'd want everyone who died back.

I'd do away with umbridge....for good.

DracosLady
I would have more actions going on between the Gryffindors and tha Slytherins, would definately have Harry and Ginny get together and stay together, have Ron and Hermione get together. I would have Draco come over to the good side to help Harry defeat Voldy, and I would have some kind of magic spell that brings the dead (except Voldy) back.
Ginny_Hermione
I would want Hufflepuff to be a more respected house.
Hermione and Ron to get together, but not then totally leave Harry out, or break up for good. That would be bad. Be like Lily and James, but still have time for friends.
Harry to defeat Voldemort, and live with greiving, of everyone lost.
Harry, Ron and Hermione NOT die, if they do in #7
Harry to get together with Ginny after Voldemort has died.

Oops! Sorry, this is more like what I want to happen in HP... sad.gif Sorry!

Ginny!! happy.gif

Yes, but all pureblood families are interlinked! Ginny is Harry's greatest sorce of comfort. Without her, things would have been a lot harder.

I would have wanted maybe Harry to take Ginny to the Yule Ball but not actually like her until maybe the end when she goes off to dance with someone else. Then, instead of Cho, he'd be chasing after Ginny. They would get together a lot earlier. It would be good.

And I'd also liked Harry not to dump Ginny at the end.
Madmoiselle Lilly
Um ... it's a hard question but I'm going to have to say that if I could change one thing about the HP series, it would be the Harry/Ginny ship. I can't stand them together. But other than that - it boggles my mind.
GreenGred
only thing i would change is more books. not even more in the series but i want background on people and JK knows all this information about every character i think it would be great to have a book just giving us all the information about harry potter not in the books. that way we dont have to read every obscure interview to find it all out.
Pygmy_puff
If i could just change one thing... I would change the fact that Harry had to live with the Dursleys. He wouldn't have been so messed up if he didn't live with the Durleys. And the fact that they all hate him didn't help much.

Well said!!Harry's anger etc was soooo annoying to read. I think that book 5 was the worst out of the 6 so far, however when there's five other books to compare it with, there's always ging to be one you don't like. However, JKR has said that she wanted to make harry's character like that becuase she wanted it to be as realistic as possible e.g. mood swings in teenage years etc. but is was really hard to read those bits where he used to shout at Ron and Hermione for no reason, he just got on my nerves in those bits.

QUOTE

This made me chuckle coz my old pyschology teacher always used to go on about how Harry would just be a nerous wreck if he was a real person: his aunty and uncle locking him under the stairs, treating him like a slave etc ...
Moonyfan
I'd absolutely make sure that there is no way or reasons for Lupin's death in book seven. So it's impossible for him to die in the final installment, you know what I mean? And I'd bring Sirious back. Also, I'd like Luna to end up with someone... Neville would be great...
Nawal
Ummm...well here goes my list:

1.Make Neville's parents sane,I feel so sorry for him! sad.gif
2.Bring dumbledore back.
3.Kill Rufus Scrimegeor(sp?),I don't really know why but he bugs me so much when he's always trying to talk to Harry and get all the information from him. mad2.gif
4.umm..Draco come to the good side and help Harry.
5.Stop Harry being so mad at Ron & Hermione in the fifth book. wacko.gif
6.Bring the DA back.....and so much more... ph34r.gif
Silence Dogood
Ok, this is going to be an incredibly long list, so bare with me here!

1. I wouldn't change a thing!

I wouldn't change a thing because JKR has done everything she should to keep us hooked. Oh, and yeah I lied.
El Barto
I agree, I wouldn't change anything. But not just because she, Rowling, got us hooked and all those other things. While that is a major factor, there is also the point that its not my story or your guys's biggrin.gif If we changed it, it would be sculpting it to our needs and what we would like to know immediatley, such as...instead of the RAB letter being signed 'RAB', we would, or some of us would, make it the entire signiture. I'm not saying that would happen if it were one of us writing it, but it would mean that we would already know the story.
HPfan#1
Well I would never ever change anything about Harry Potter because if I wanted to change something about it I wouldn't love the movies and the books as much because JKR writes them perfectly and the directors make it look so real!!!!
Reecy13
There isn't too many things i would want to change. But a few of them are... I would want either Sirius or DD to have stayed alive. Harry needs someone to live with after he kills Voldy. I would also like to change the fact that the series would never end and they would go on forever!
DracosLady
I don't think that I would really change anything. Everything seems pretty good the way that it has been so far. But if anything were toi change I would say put more of the book details into the movies themselves, it would make the movies like alot better (not that they are not god enough already) And I would probaly change the fact about Dumbledore andSirius dying that was sooo sad shutup.gif thats about all I would probaly do to change things...

Marcey tongue.gif
TheGoodGirl
I'm with Silence Dogood "by the way, love the name cool.gif " anyway
I wouldn't change a thing! everything in the books are ment to be there. I don't think that JKR would have just wrote anything just to fill a page. Every word has a reason, even all the shipping stuff. the books are about Harry's LIFE not just about his fight with LV althou that is a big part, he dose have friends and he likes girls and all the stuff.

Seriouslysirius
Well me i'm not sure probably the deaths but then again that is how J.K is makeing the books realistic.

So i'd say more use of the hang on i actully don't know so i do think i'm with.. All the people who wouldn't change anything i mean J.K has made it her own and really i struggle to think what to change. So nothing it's fine the way it is.
marianita13
u kno....nobody really wants to change anythin..why did they even start this topic huh? but one thing that i would change is the if dumbledor had to die at least keep sirius alive cause the poor thing never got a chance to live with him. and i would so put more of the details from the books into th movies. no i would put everything into the movies! i dont care if they are 4 hours long.
OHyea
some of the stuff
like changing sirius dying and different teacher in OOTP are kind of just .... useless

i mean i bet you wouldnt hang on to the book if there was everything nice happening all of the sudden. right?
there has to be some horrible things, or no one would read them!!

i think i would change slughorn's name to something better. it (no offense) is a little weird, in my opinion

cool.gif
mysterious_rab
If i could change sth through the HP series, i would definitely change sirius and dumbledore's death, as well as, harry's parents'! I don't want harry to be unhappy!!!!
SpinJam
Well, I know that Sirius' death is essential to the plot of the story, but I would make someone else die. Like Kingsley Shacklebolt, or even Mundungus. I miss my Sirius! Anyway, I know it's not possible to rewrite the series in that sense, but at least you know how I feel.
seriouslylovinsirius68
I totally agree with everyone who got sick of all the lovey stuff in HBP. One chapter of the whole Ron/Lavender thing was fine; it added a little teenage drama(after all they are teens). But after half a book of it I was ready to puke! So that's definitely one thing I would change.
another is sirius dying. I love his character and I almost cried when I read it! I'm hoping for a comeback in the seventh book! biggrin.gif
butterbeer_11
i would change that snape dies and dumbolder doesnt and that siruis dosent die and that harrys parents dont die and that malfoy should die (whats up with all this dieing?) biggrin.gif
1hpfan101

* I WOULD OF HAD HERMIONE AND RON GOING OUT ALREADY** HARRY AND GINNY WOULD OF BEEN GOING OUT WAY BEFORE THE 6TH BOOK* tongue.gif biggrin.gif cool.gif wink.gif

*I WOULD OF STARTED THE SERIES WITH HARRY'S PARENTS ALIVE AND THEN THEY DIE FARTHER ALONG IN THE BOOKS* wink.gif cool.gif
gryffindorgirlie
Well, im sure your all making very good points but remember, JK has probably done this for a gud reason. After all, you cant improve perfection, can you?
Cobra
well i dont like that harry's parents died and i also would hav had neville more important cuz he is kool and resembles me

and dumbledore dying isnt kool neither is black dying (falling into the veil) ya and i say that draco gets sent to azkaban
belle_316
I would still have Sirius alive because then Harry would have someone to help him in the seventh book apart from Ron and Hermione. I know he would have the Order members to help him as well. But i think having a father/brother figure would help him more since he never knew his parents or had siblings. And i think he may think and plan things through more carefully. It seemed to me while reading the books that Harry valued Sirius's opinion more than anyone else's. Well, except for Dumbledore's. When he saw Snape's worst memory the first person he wanted to talk to about it was Sirius.
the only one he'll ever want
This is going to be incredibly pathetic, but one of the things that's really ticked me lately is Hermione punching Draco in PoA. That really bugged me and, in my opinion, was ridiculous and unnecessary. It was not performed well in the movie, either... while some say it was real, it looked rather fake to me.

Other than that I have to thank JKR for making this an excellent series... sure, I wish that Sirius and Dumbledore wouldn't have died, too, but I'm sure that there is a reason and, in the end, things will work out.
sw33t_Evanna
Well i'll certainly want cedric, siriuis and dumbledore to live and wormtail, bellatrix and snape to die. But i guess it won't be any fun at all
I doubt very much that Jo will kill Harry to keep the readers gripped. sad.gif
gryffindorgirlie
I go by the motto,

Can't improve perfection. Then again, no-ones perfect!

I would go with a lot of peoples comment about the 5th & 6th being more connected with previous books. I think they are very ' stand alone'.
