we must agree strongly with sophie's suggestion of Tim Burton to directing the sixth movie. since the book was so dark and emotional Tim Burton would be the most excellent choice for a director. we also think that since Danny Elfman pretty much does all the scores for tim burton movies if he were to direct HBP it would only be natuarl that Danny would do the music. and enough of the Alfonso bashing already there was really only one important part left out in POA we think GOF was a substancially bigger dissapointment because of all that was left out(i.e. dobby and also the actual world cup match?)

I had mentioned Tim a few posts back. I dunno, I still think he would be a great director..Guess we will just have to cross our fingers and hope that WHOEVER directs it will bring all the key elements to life, without going "cut" crazy, ya know?
smartman299
I heard a rumer that Joss Wheadon might direct it. i would love that, i as a buffy/angel fan think he would be perfect. Steven Speilburg, Tim Burton, and George Lucas would be AWESOME but i don't think it is that likely
Tim_Burton_fan
Oh please don't even mention Peter Jackson... he really suck... I haven't read the Lord of the Rings books... but when I saw the movie It was sooooo boring wacko.gif .... I hate those movies.

I think that Alfonso Cuaron did a good, not great, but good job, specially in how he picture buckbeak.

Christopher Nolan ruine completely the vision of Tim Burton and changed something that in the first film and in the cartoon said... that the Jocker killed Bruce parents... not another guy... He didn't show Gotham city as gothik as Tim Burton. He completly destroy Batman. And Christian Bale is been the worst batman ever... and my only hero is batman!!!

I think Tim Burton should director HBP since he has that dark and sentimental vision which it's shown in the HBP book, with the music of Danny Elfman which is as the tone as the Tim Burton movies... I really think that the Sam Raimmi was wrong in lating Danny go from the Spider Man 3 movie.

My choice would be Tim Burton... Chris, well he's my second favourite director but I can't see him directing a dark movie like HBP. He's more of a light kind of director
Danny2004
Talk for yourself, maybe. rolleyes.gif

I would say Burton and the entire befalling Batman industry went out of bounds about Thomas Wayne's murderer; remember that Burton (as a producer) let Joel Schumacher make a caricaturical look of the Batman universe. mad.gif The original comic book pointed out it was a normal thief who did it; Christopher Nolan only followed the original file by Bob Kane for that part and he also portrayed human emotion like never before in a Batman movie. wink.gif About dark environment... Have you seen Narrows Island? Nolan knows how to create the dark setting, especially if we ask him to create the dark places where Harry and Dumbledore have to go.

No disrespect towards Danny Elfman, BUT I would call for the dynamic duo of Hans Zimmer/James Newton Howard for the music in a more serious approach: Hans for the action and James for the human interaction/emotional parts. biggrin.gif

Tim Burton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lovely rumors have been circulating about the return of Columbus. I loved him and his work with the first two films. I wouldn't mind either way, if he really did return, though.

The other directors strayed too far away from the path of the books and as tightly to them as Columbus did, which many honor him for. But yeah, it would mess things up if the style of the movies went that way again.

We can't go up and down like that. I have no directors in mind I would like to direct a HP movie, but I have good directors in mind. Honestly, I don't really care who directs it.
zacharypotter
The two last films need just the right director. No Chris Columbus, or Alfonso Cuaron. For some reason, people think that George Lucas or Stephen(Steven?) Spielberg should direct. NO GEORGE LUCAS. He better not, cause he'll ruin it, totally. I loved Star Wars, don't get me wrong, but he'd screw up Harry Potter. Stephen S.? Well, maybe. He's a great director, but I'd be worried about his choice of actors. He might make Tom Cruise Snape lol j/k....
I heard somewhere that Warner Bros. was thinking about giving the spot of director to M. Night Shyamalan(who did the Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, the Village, and Lady in the Water) . I personally think this is a brilliant idea. I'm a fan of his, and I think he could do great, even though he may make it a little darker, as his movies tend to be classified as HORROR and SUSPENSE or whatever. But as it isn't up to me, I won't go on. THat just my opinion.... smile.gif
the_one_to_watch
Here's a crazy suggestion.
What about Baz Luhrmann? I know, the three movies that he's directed so far have been very musical-orientated, but he doesnt have to take that approach with the HBP!
For those who dont know his films have been: Strictly Ballroom (1992), Romeo+Juliet (1996) and Moulin Rouge (2001).
I'm suggesting him for one reason, that I love his filming techniques, the way he comically speeds up a useless bit of a scene and the way he moves the "camera" from one set to another with out cutting. Genious!
Another reason is that he is fantastic at focusing on the characters and how they are portrayed on screen. His films focus alot about love (and lets face it, the main point of the HBP is that there is love in the air) and he's great at directing tragic endings (e.g. Moulin Rouge: Ewan McGregor's character Christian and his reaction to his one true love, Satine (Nicole Kidman) lying dead in his arms. The way Baz set the scene was pretty impressive-to go from a high to a low in an instant).
His films have a light and fluffy touch until we're invited to delve deeper into the plot and that's when it begins to get darker.
He can entice the audience to really love the "goodies" and really hate the "baddies".
Always important, especially with the almost "black and white" portrayal of good vs. evil in the Potter films.
I'm not sure what anyone else thinks... unsure.gif

A few months ago Chris Columbous CONFIRMED he would reutrn to the franchise ONLY if Emma Watson wub.gif wub.gif , Daneil Radcliffe and Rupert grint would not be replaced. In November 2006 Emma Watson's agent stated she wouldn't be back, so Chris Columbous won't return now, YES!!! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

Right now we need to start a petition to make sure Alfonso Cuaron directs Half-Blood Prince or Deathly Hallows! If we want anything close to being a great film, we need him back!

Don't believe me? Then go see Children of Men. It is exhilirating!

Cuaron is a freakin' genius, no doubt the best director for our beloved books!

wingardium.hermione.leviosa
I agree.. alfonso is a great, wonderful director. The Prisoner of Azkaban remains to this day my favourite movie of all time...even among the other Harry Potter ones. While I think that it would be good to have a new director once in a while, I have to admit that with a new director you get a different sense of the movie. This doesn't always correspond with what the other HP movies have been like, so it's kind of weird, for me at least.

I wouldn't be really upset if Alfonso doesn't direct HBP or DH, but it would be disappointing just to have him for Azkaban only. He is an absolutely fantastic director after all.
Miss Minerva Mcgonagall
Yeah I love Alfonso! Don't think a petition would work at all though. Well, unless you had completely thousands of people signed and then Warner Bros actually read it. Even then Alfonso would have to agree! I think he directed PoA amazingly, it's the best one. I just wish they'd have let him do Phoenix, it's my favourite book. I just know he would have done a good job. I really hope he does Deathly Hallows, I'm not too keen on HBP. It's great, but I'm not sure how the film will be.
Capricorn
Hi there! We have a thread about who the possible director would be for HBP, so I'm going to merge this thread with that one in a minute. smile.gif

Incidentally, I agree. I haven't seen Children of Men, but I would love to, and PoA is the HP movie closest to how I think Jo imagined her world. I don't know, but the madness and more European feel really fitted well with the medieval feeling I get from the books.

Also, PoA was a dark and grimy film. GoF was 'dark' too, but it didn't have that lived in feel. You really got the idea that the wizarding world had existed for centuries without changing much. Cuaron has slightly mad imagination, and Jo certainly has too. He seems to have captured her world so well that he put things in the film that foreshadowed some of the happenings later in the series.

And he seems willing to get involved again - I'd love that!
Jan_Fan_500
According to the IMdB Anand Tucker, the guy who did Shopgirl is set to direct. He was going to direct The Golden Compass after Chris Weitz pulled out.
romilda_girl
I hope that the person who directed PoA directs HBP. I can't remember his name right now but the third film was really dark and the sixth book is terribly dark so he would make a good job of it. If not then the Director of GoF..I can't remember his name either! But GoF and PoA were my favourite films.
hgsupporter
I heard that Mike Newell was most likely to return and do HBP. But I'm not sure. But I know he did an awesome job with GOF. The graphics were good and was so creative.
TheHarryinMe
I think Alfonso would do a wonderful job with Half-Blood Prince, given he has already done one Harry Potter movie and he really emphasized the darker aspects. Mike Newell, while good, didn't seem to be the right kind of person for Half-Blood Prince, which is significantly different from Goblet of Fire. My way, it would be Alfonso, Christopher Columbus (though I'd rather save him for the last movie) and then Mike Newell or the guy who is doing Order of the Phoenix. Come to think of it, if Order of the Phoenix turns out well, I think I'll put that director second and save Christopher Columbus for the last film (sorry, I don't remember who is doing Order of the Phoenix... blush.gif ).
Fawkes1728
Although I thought Chris Columbus did a fine job with the first two movies, I don't think he'll be back for either 6 or 7 for two reasons. First once you get out of the series Warner Bros. doesn't have a history of inviting you back in? Secondly, I'm not sure his style would translate best with either of the remaining features (Although, we really have nothing to go by for Movie 7 yet?) Plus, when Chris left he said he couldn't bare being away from his family for such long periods of time for the filming especially, when his children were at such critical stages of their development. Also, I don't think any director can give their best work in a followup Harry Potter because each movie is such hardwork and for such a lengthy amount of time, Chris's work in Chamber aside because I think he did pull it off, but most couldn't....For that reason David won't be back for an encore in HBP, I doubt? I was one Potter fan that didn't feel Alfonso's work was the best that movie(Prizoner of Azkaban) could have seen. The Prizoner of Azkaban is my least favorite movie adaptation mainly because of how sad/cold Alfonso made it. Even more so, cold/dark I believe than JKR intended? I think someone else could have done a better job...
So for the final two movies and especially for HBP, I would love to see Gus Van Sant, Terry Gilliam, or even Steven Spielberg) Believe it or not?) Take the helm. It will be very interesting to see who they(Warner Bros.) are in final negotiations with right now? David Heyman and the rest of the Producers must have already made their choice and are waiting for the final signatures or, waiting to announce because I had heard filming for HBP was to begin May,'07. As much as I can't wait for OOTP, I love the journey of the making of the film so, my eyes are on the HBP now.....I wish some information would be released about it soon! Also, we need John Williams back to score the final two films. There really is a difference in soundtrack quality after he gave up the series after Prisoner of Azkaban......
Katie.
Just saw Children of Men last weekend and already I've been reading interviews with Cuaron trying to see if he wants to come back (it does seem like he wants to). The reason that I think that Cuaron should come back is simple - there are two of course. 1) The movie just seemed to flow. Nothing felt really forced or choppy, and the viewer also really got the feeling that Cuaron truly respected the novels and that he had tthis wonderful imagination 2) With PoA the series really did mature. Don't get me wrong, Columbus was a good director, but the first two films were really happy and cheery which didn't really seem to reflect the books IMO. With Cuaron the teen actors really seemed to step up their game and the whole film just felt a lot darker which I loved.

Bring back Cuaron!
Potterfan7
I wish the director for HBP would be Ridley Scott thats the guy that directed Black Hawk Down back in 2001. I think that Black Hawk Down was really good and I am not sure if that is a book but the scenery was just wonderful. I think he could easily adapt to HBP and JKs style of writing. HBP is a very dark book and I think Scott would just do a really good job directing this movie.

Another that comes to mind is Stefen Fangmeier. That is the guy that just directed the new trilogy Eragon. Although I thought the movie was really short I think he did a great job to capture the darkness of the scenery and HBP could definitely use him this time around. I donŽt know though weŽll see who Warner Bros. chooses unsure.gif unsure.gif

I know that they are only taking Western European cast and directors, but I think Peter Jackson would do awesome with Harry Potter.
Felipe_Black
I know what people mean about Chris Columbus, he has an amazing talent, particularly for Childrens films, but as the sories get more "grown up" I would like to see someone take the reigns who has the ability to visualise the Harry Potter universe, I think Tim Burton, would be an excellent choice to direct the last two films. He clearly has the vision required and the talent, just look at his back catalog, its full of amazing fantasy and adventure.

If WB cant get Tim Burton, then Alfonso would be great, personnally I loved POA.

I also think Gillermo Del Toro, is worth a shout, has anyone seen Pans Labeyrinth? Its totaly cool!! biggrin.gif
Lavender-*lurves*-WonWon
i read somewhere that david yates might be directing the sixth movie but it could be a rumour.
snakecharmer
Mike Newell and Alfonso Cuaron did a great job on the past 2 movies. but i think Cuaron's the director who fits to direct HBP.... smile.gif
monkeymushroom
You know who old Alfonso Cuaron reminds me of most?... The Old Tim Burton - Yes, they both look alike - even the hair resembles their wild and NightmareBeforeChristmasy imagination.
I posted something in a while back saying i would like Cuaron to return for the sixth film but then i just wondered...since it seems that so far the new director is doing quite amazingly in the fifth potter movie i think that he should difinitely return; he's young and has a great imagination (which is level with even some of us fans) and seems to have great plans installed for the great Harry Potter and his upcoming adventures, he should definitely be given the chance to direct again thumbsup.gif

I heard a RUMOUR somewhere that apparently he has been expected to sign up for the next movie. I hpe this will come true because he is a FANTASTIC DIRECTOR and i feel he will bring the books justice.

I didn't particular enjoy the directing of Mike Newell in the fourth film coz he was too old and i believed he had a pretty dry sense of humour compared to Alfonso, Columbus and the new bloke. I sooo hope he doesn't return for another book because that would just kill me blink.gif wacko.gif dry.gif mad.gif

I noticed someone mentioned the Wachowski brothers.

I think the Matrix is one of the best films ever made, it has a depth, a maturity, a well grounded philosophy.

Such a shame the matrix sequels utterly ruined the franchise. They over-did it, became too po-faced over their creation and didnt have the lightness of touch required for a sequel.

They also did V for Vendetta. It is arguable that V for Vendetta is very similar to OoTP particularly in regards to the whole anti draconian authority thing but it was still not as good as it could have been. The source material for V is a comic book and I always thought it would have been good to see HP in comic form which is why i dont think they are suitable.
Lav
on IMBD it says that David Yates has signed up to direct again! hopefully he is.. from all the film photos so far it looks the best and he seems like as nice guy! Plus he's done lots of films before writen a few and stuff like that so he seems pretty able in his job.. seen as he's just done OotP aswell it just seems natural for him to go on with HBP because they are both so dark and sad! i don't really want Mike Newell back, he made it so obvious that Mad Eye was barty jnr my fried whos never read the books before got it straight away when he went to see it! and with Alfonso Cuaron as well he made the film too short and miss out alot of information that is usefull to the rest of the book as well as gettting the film! Chris i thought was good he kept as true to the books as possible when making a film though i personally think David Yates should do it unsure.gif

though if i could get anyone it would have to be Peter Jackson... i'm sorry but he is probably one of the best directors of all time LOTR was brilliant and so is King Kong he just made them so well, i think he sould do it if David Yates isn't!

soha88
Yeah, like Lav, I read that David Yates is directing HBP. But imdb can hardly be called reliable. It's always subject to change. But I'm betting we'd get to know who's directing pretty soon though. Probably in may or so. If Yates IS to direct the movie, he'd sign up for it by then latest, since the shooting itself is scheduled for this coming September. Anyway, I hope it's him, since by the look of its trailer, OotP luks awesome. I personally feel that PoA has been the only good movie adaptation so far. I really didn't like GoF that much. So hopefully, OotP beats PoA. Then I'd be really happy...and pleasantly surprised.
Lav
oh i really didn't like how PoA was adapted for film! i thought it was terrible, personally i thought the 1st two were alright PoA was the worst it was so short and missed out so much detail and for GoF if you go for the film and not thinking about the book it's ok, but yea from the trailer OotP looks the best so far, i just hope it is and that David Yates directs again, he seems like a really nice guy too, which is improtant in a director that he is able to get on with the actors and crew!
ollie-hampson
yeh i agree, alfonso tried to hard to make the film for younger kids and adults at the same time which in a way was good because the film appeals to all but he didnt suceed in it so it just made it bad. i personally dont think it was amazing but i dont think it was terrible i think it was in between because yeh it missed alot out but there were occaisons were it was really good but they were really late on in the end though.
Lav
i just feel the expectation just ruined it for me.. i mean we had to wait 1yr 1/2 for and 1hr 1/2 film that wasn't that great.. personally i think that he shouldn't come back, he wasn't was good **** chris coumbus... he at least kept as much in from the book as possible.. i was just dissapointed that after waiting so long for it the film was really short and missed out so much of the important stuff and added in things that had no relevance to anything! i just feel that if he comes back for the 7th or 6th film a lot of things people are waiting to see in the films will be missed out!

i agree with you there totally!
i really didn't like Alfonso....my favourite book always has been and still is PoA because i love the character of Sirius soo much but the fact that in the film we don't even find out who 'Messers Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs' are!! and that is just soo important in every book since then, people who haven't read the books are probably thinking 'why on earth is LV calling Pettigrew wormtail??' or 'Why the hell was Harry's Patronus a stag' the only way they could get that information is from the book, it really should have been in the film, i was so dissapointed when it wasnt because the shrieking shack chapter is my favourite in that book!! mad.gif mad.gif I bet aswell that moony, wormtail, padfoot and prongs have quite a lot of relevence in DH aswell so it hasn't really set the films up for anything because it hasnt been explained before and they'll have to find a way to explain it then.

Anyway who will direct? i should answer that now i've finished ranting *sorry!* blush.gif

Chris Columbus i hail you!! He did the best job so far on the HP films!! i love him so much for it...i want to meet him and hug him his films were so good, so i really think he should come back as director. If not Mike Newell should, i love the fourth film *still cried when Cedric dies* one of those two should most definatley direct it because they did the 1st, 2nd and 4th films so much justice, it really is a shame how much Alfonso cut out of the third film.....but ah well the films were always doomed to be worse than the books i'll just have to live with it.
Lav
so far from the trailers David yates looks like he's done a good job on OotP though i don't get the bit the LV at the station wacko.gif

If Alfonso comes bakc i'm sorry but i will lose all respect for the films! and pottyhead i totaly agree with all the mooney, padfoot stuff it's totaly missed out and when my brother went to see it he was totally confused when he came out because he hadn't read the book! sometimes when you watch a film when you think back you can imagine scenes form the book that weren't there but that you yourself have just cunjured up!

but if David Yates has done a good job on OotP i would be happy for him to come back for the final two! i think that whoever does HBP has to do DH as well!
PottyHead
Yeah i've just been watching a lot of stuff on youtube about OotP nd David Yates looks like he's done a brilliant job. But that is expected as he;s done a lot of films before, but this gives him an advantage because he has experience, he knows what should be kept and what should be cut so i think he do the film justice in that way instead of just getting rid of what he doesnt want there which seems to be what Alfonso had done with PoA. *what was with those nature shots?!*
but i think i'll have to wait until i actually see OotP until i can pass my final judgement on Yates, but so far he's looking like he's kept up to par with columbus and newell
x
Lav
with newell i think he gave away far to much at the beginning! i mean with barty jnr being in the house with him and casting the dark mark, and then the zoom in on mad eye as harry goes up after he's name's been called out! i think it was good, but it was all given away too soon whihc was the problem with GoF, if he does come bakc he has to be able to hold in the excitement till when it's supose to he revealed!
ollie-hampson
I think if chris columbus came back he would spend more time on the animation quality because i found it appauling in the first film but other than that he did an amazing job on sticking to the story line. another thing i found annoying about the third was that they didnt exactly wear robes, it was just casual clothes and it didnt give you that school feel were its strict on uniform, to me it just looked like a holiday castle overrun by children
PottyHead
I just hope it's Columbus, Newell or Yates...i don't want another new director and i definatley don't! want Alfonso! lol

i was just watching a behind the scenes thing on OotP and Yates sounds really passionate about this film and it looks like he's done an amazing job on it so who knows maybe he'll outshine my favourite HP director yet (Columbus).
Lav
yea he's had experience so he knows what the public what! hopefully he's also read all the books and knows what is important and what can be cut! but most importantly what will be important to the whole series!

If I had a choice, considering the tone of HBP, and considering that I would greatly prefer the film to reflect Harry's story rather than the gut wrenchingly awful teenage angst, I would probably have to say someone like Jonathan Demme maybe, or Christopher Nolan, who did an absolutely amazing job on Batman Begins.

Yes! I love the idea of Christopher Nolan directing the sixth film. Every time I read the book I hear the Batman Begins theme in my head. The quick, repetetive beats, occasionally swelling, makes you feel like you're on the edge of a great plunge, a major event. This music is just perfect for the evolution of a character, going from a child to an adult, and you know that the child is about to grow into something extraordinary. This is why HBP was my favorite so far. At the start of the book, Harry was just a kid, with no clear idea of his future. Now, he knows what he has to do, and he knows it will be difficult, lonely, and probably thankless. But even so, he just hardens himself, his face like steel, and gets ready to take that plunge into his future. Anyway, I'd love to hear music like that in the movie, and I think Christopher Nolan would do an awesome job with it. (Sure, I love Peter Jackson, but it would just feel too wierd to have him work on HP, and I don't know how well he would mesh with it.)
Lav
well he did LOTR which is also every much good verses evil and magic and having to do things on your own... i mean frodo had sam with him, but emotional and physically he had to suffer the ring with his own strength, so they have similar things happening in them! i think PJ would make it look more real because he doesn't like using specail effects all the time! with most of the work down on LOTR he did it by making models of the towers and filming round the for outside shots and stuff like that... he hardly used effects and only when really necessary, which i think is needed a lot in harry potter because some of the directors used a lot of it or didn't use it very well! like in PS when harry is playing quidditch he blue screen just looked fake!
ollie-hampson
im guessing that from the front page it WILL be yates directing
Lav
finally! they took there time with this one!!! that means i can start writing him now! lol i bet he will starting getting annoyed again!

i just hope that they didn't take there time so they could do all the auditions in secret meaning they are going to annouce cast soon instead of audition information!!! oh i just hope i'm worrying for nothing! unsure.gif
Louise
Well, seeing as how the director has now been announced, I'm going to lock this up and start a new thread for y'all to cheer or moan, depending on how the news strikes you wink.gif
