Right, well I would definitely be sad if Harry died. After all, we've spent seven years at his side! I think I would be a little disappointed, actually. I wouldn't start hating the series or anything, because it is plausible the he could die, but I think there are better ways of ending things.

I think this is a good topic to discuss because I have my views on both Harry and how Book 7 will end, but it would be interesting to see what everyone else thinks. Me? I like Harry, don't get me wrong, but I think sometimes he needs to be a bit more understanding though. I voted I would cry, because like Meggie said, we've been with him for 7 years! But on the whole, I think he's definetley one of the best characters I've ever read about. In the end I think he will die though, out of effort of killing Voldy, or injury. What do you all think?

I can understand why Harry might die, but I think that it would almost ruin the series for me if Harry died. I mean, we've spent that last seven years (give or take, depending on when you started reading the books) watching him grow and mature. The whole series was because of him and about him. I think that it would almost have been pointless for JK to have dragged it on this long if she was just going to kill him anyway. I personally don't think he will die but if it happens I would definitely cry. I could see him getting injured, maybe even being touch and go there for a while, but I honestly can't believe that JK would kill Harry. I could see it more being Ron or Hermione. Casualties are, unfortunately, a promise with war. So, those are my thoughts.

I cried when Sirius's died..I cried a river when Snape's killed DD..you can bett I'll cry if Harry dies..which I doubt..I mean,I kind of grew up with him..JK can't do such a thing..she would made so many kids/and probably adults/ around world sad..she's got kids of her own..she won't do that..cause she knows her children will be readin' HP one day..and she does not want to see tears in their eyes..

The general feeling is that he will die and I really don't want that to happen. What would be the point of creating this character and letting us watch him grow to become the person that he is and then having him die. I cried when Cedric dies and when Sirius dies and when Dumbledore died I cried so much that I had a bad headache for five days afterwards. I really don't know what I would be like if Harry, Ron and Hermione, Ginny or Neville died. Though I guess it is not possible for all of them to live.

You really should add another choice for the poll up there.
Cause I dont think I would really be sad, more disapointed, or upset that the series would take a turn like that. I mean, it wouldnt be what I would expect.
.... wellll it would be exactly what I would (and have) suspected. But I think it would be just too "hero-cliche' " if that happened.
oh well, just my thoughts.

I would be sad but also proud of him, because I think Harry is the last horcrux and will sacrifice himself to defeat Voldermort.
J K Rowling said she's going to stop at book 7 so killing Harry would finish of the book completly.

Usually, I don't really care if the main character of a series of books or movies dies, as long as it is done well. However, I don't care if JK makes for the most exciting death of all for Harry, I would still cry because he's probably my favorite book character of all-time. We've been with him for so long, and we have always been seeing things through his point of view. Not only do we see his actions, but we see his thoughts, so I really feel like I know him and he seems kind of real to me (not in like a crazy way). So if Harry were to die in the last book, it would be kind of like losing a friend

I wont be sad. The series is going to end, and that will be sad enough. I fully am prepared for his death. The thing that would make me angry though is if the book ends and he is clinging on to life, and we dont find out if he dies or not.

Drowning and Drowning again in tears! I cannot imagine what greif the HP world be in if Harry died! I really hope he stays alive! Throughout his entire series. Though it would make sense if he died in the seventh book wouldn't it? Nevermind.....

But if he dies... I don't think I'll be able to
deal with it as some ignorant people say. I will grieve for him and wish I were in his place --- well... to an extent....

But I sincerly hope he doesn't! Anyway, Thank you for haveing this poll, it's ingenious. I like to hear what other people think. Thanks!

See you around!,

that would be really sad,i may end up crying but i wont get disappointed. im kind of thinking that he might die at the end <which makes me sad>.
but of course, i would love the ending of him living "happily ever after". well, i know its not a fairy tale or the like but harry has suffered so much and deserves some happiness after all, right?

Nov 23 2005, 04:24 AM
sad, of course. we wouldnt really wanna bother reading about a boy for YEARSSSS just to find out that he'l die in the end. a good story indeed sometimes have sad endings but i dun want that 'good story with sad ending' to be HIS story. sirius died and some ppl were very sad bout it...and then dumbledore 'died' and everyone (almost) dun wanna hear of it, or some are still in denial bout it (like myself) and were very sad indeed with the ending of HBP...but if harry dies....well, i wouldnt be very surprised but still its not very nice.
if he didnt have ron and hermione or ginny, his death wouldve been alright cos he's got nothing to lose, but he's got true friends who loves him and an errr 'ex' (i think) gf (ginny) who also loves him, it'd be sad cos in HBP at least we saw a bit of how harry wanted a simple life...just walking with ginny and stuff, he couldnt ask for anything more but at the end it was all ruined once again (cos he learned bout the horcruxes...and the 'death' of dumbledore).
it would be real nice if he'd be able to get out of his 'duel' with voldemort in book7 alive, and all his friends alive too.......just so our errrr 'hero' at least will be able to lead a very quiet normal life at last (as an auror perhaps).

I would be rather sad for the first little while. How is life would have been so short, and how unlucky he was to have had such a terrible fate
But in all honesty, after a few days it would wear off and I would begin to remember. He's now with his parents who he's never really met (while they are the two things that would make him truly happy), and the two people who were like parents to him (sirius, and dumbledore) I think I would almost ALMOST (and no I am not cruel) be happy for him because he'd finally get to be with his parents.

I wouldbe depressed. Like, depressed-depressed. Crying for a day and stuff. It would be like a major break-up. I'd be so sad. It would be worse 'cause you can't make up theories that would explaina miraculous coming back from the dead type thing.
Such a depressing thought...don't speak of such things!!

I too chose the last alternative. Although I'm kinda sure that Harry will gie, it would still be extreamly sad. I too knew kinda sure that DD would die in 6 book, but it didn't make it any beareble when the moment came

I just can't see J.K Rowling killing Harry off. Yes, she can be ruthless(just look at Dumbledore, Cedric and a lot of other people). But, Harry, he's her main chacacter. He's the hero. He's the boy who lived. I just don't see it happening. But then again I could be wrong. But I would be very disapointed if Harry died. Also, I think that a lot of her fans wouldn't respect her if she did kill off Harry.

It seems somewhat predictable that Harry will die, but if he does, I would have to say that it would ruin the whole series for me and many others I know who feel exactly the same.. I really hate to say it but, that's what would happen. It would feel weird reading the previous books leading up to the seventh, knowing that Harry dies, afterall it is different if Sirius or Dumbledore die. Harry is obviously the main character but if he died it just wouldn't be right, it's wrong!
JK, if your reading this, please don't kill off Harry, there are many other ways of ending a great series, he could be injured but please don't kill him off. Many fans would be mortified or very displeased you took those actions!!!
I think it should have a kind of not hapy ending but a reflective ending...kind of hard to explain...it can't all be happy joy joy!

Of course I will be sad if Harry dies in the next book, but it won't be a complete shock because I know that there's a big chance he'll die.
If he dies I'd feel depressed for a few days but it wouldn't ruin the entire serie for me. Some stories have sad endings, and if jk decides to end it with his death than I accept that

One thing I know for sure, I'll have to cry for a day to get over it.

Of course, if Harry DID die, there is such a big chance, so it won't be such a shock, but I'll be depressed for a couple days, but that's ok. But it won't ruin the series! There's no such thing as the perfect ending, but yes, I can't see JKR killing Harry pff, so I'm not really worried about the death thing, and without the deaths, JKR's books wouldn't be as dramatic.

It depends on how it was written. If it was a valiant death and he keeled over with his friends around, I may cry.
However, I will also be severely dissapointed with the entire series. That's just a pee poor way to end a 10 year journey. I'd burn all my books....I'm not even joking.
Just the thought of it has me tempted to open up my Forgotten Realms trove of books so I can get HP off of my mind.

Of course i woild be really sad if Harry died. But, i don't think this will happen because the prophecy says that "none can live while the other survives." If Harry were to die then Voldamore would have to still survive and i don't think JKR will end the series like that.

I have mixed ideas as to whether Harry can survive or not, though if he does die, a little piece of my heart will go with him *sniff*
He's my favourite character because he is such a loyal and brave, noble and moral person that after all his hardships it would seem cruel to the extreme. However having said that, its also a realistic way to end it considering who he is trying to vanquish and why.
I guess I cant pick it, but if he dies, I will sobb and rock back and forward, clutching my book, quietly asking "why?' through silent tears. I guess the whole book series would have to be called a tragedy forever more. *sniff*
It's going to be hard enough saying goodbye to the young man even if he lives, so if he dies, well ... where are we to find solace? *sigh*

You know, actully, I'd rather have Harry die with an awesome climax, then having Harry live with a cheezy climax. I'm not saying I want him to die, but I just want an awesome ending that will tell me that these series were worth reading, and that ou can say, I'm a Harry Potter fan, or something like that.
There is a 50% chance that Harry will or won't die. No one will know. We can't make any predictions on what the books so far have said. It's all JKR'S books, and whatever she wants, happens in this little world.
But if Harry DOES die, it won't be as bad as we think it will be. Think of it this way: Would you rather die loud and proud, or a coward who was hiding behind a rock the whole time? I'd die loud and proud. So if Harry dies loud and proud, it won't be as bad, because I'll close the book with a sad feeling inside saying that Harry finished his job, and gave his life, just for others. Just like his parents.

Jeez, if Harry dies. I would be depressed for like, ever. lol no, ok really I would be sad for like a year. I really hope that he doesn't. He can't just abandone Ginny, who is like in love with him; Ron, and Hermione. In my opinion Ginny and Harry are meant to be together! But, this is not the place to talk about ships. I REALLY hope Harry doesn't die!!!

Yes!
If everyone at the end of the book gets hitched and lives happily ever after in a restored Godric's Hollow, I wouldn't exactly puke, but it would be kind of a cop-out to just pretend that nothing ever happened. Don't even get me started on love triangles of any kind. And I wouldn't be too pleased if he got rid of his scar, because then the Parseltongue might be gone, and I love Parseltongue. Besides, then the quest would seem somewhat cosmetic.
If Harry died, I'd feel kinda sad, but I don't really cry about stuff that isn't real, no matter how good or moving it's supposed to be. It just won't happen. I might feel kind of paralyzed as I read the words. Then I might feel a really big pang of disappointment inside. But that's all, really...
I'd also never look at the books the same way again. I could never start reading them over, knowing he's just going to die anyway.

I would be happy if Harry died. I've never liked him that much as a character, and there are other characters I would be much more sad if they died, like Draco or the Weasley twins. Personally I think he will die, or at least I'm hoping he will. That would make an awesome way to end the series.

It would really depend on how he would die.
I personally think that if Harry will manage to destroy all the Horcruxes, he'll die. Not that I have any proof from the cannon for my opinion, but just from a literary perspective, I think that the series will have come to its natural conclusion at that point.
I do think, however, that if JKR kills Harry, we will at least catch a glimpse of Harry in the afterlife. I don't think she'll simply leave it with people staring at Harry's dead body on the floor, but she'll show us Harry meeting his parents or Sirius or DD, something like that. Maybe we'll also see Harry looking at the people crying over him and commeting that he's happier than he's ever been, and that he's going to go tell his friends not to worry -- but then his mother or someone will gently tell him that no, there's no going back now. In this case, I would definitely cry at the ending, but I would be at peace.
On the other hand, if she simply kills him off, and offers no glimpse of any hope (either we don't see the afterlife, or we have no hint that he's with the ones that he loves) -- then I will probably cry for days on end till people start panicking that there's something wrong with me!

Angry, shocked, and sad. I'd probably cry, I cried when Dumbledore died. It depends if J.K. Rowling creates a very emotional scene to go along with it, but I'd be sad nevertheless.
