Okay I searched for a thread like this but couldn't find one so I'm going to start one here.

This is a place for all you basketball fans to discuss any basketball related topics such as : teams you like, how those teams are doing, trades etc.

Okay, in the NBA I support the Washington Wizards who are doing very well so far at 4-1. I'm kind of worried though because we play the Spurs tonight which will be a really tough game.

In college I like the Maryland Terrapins who were such a let down last season after not qualifying for the NCAA tourney for the first time in like 15 years or something. We should be a lot better than last year because almost every single one of our players are coming back as seniors or juniors (which is probably why we are starting the pre-season ranked 21).

I also have been wondering whether any of you enjoy watching college more than the NBA. For the past few years, to me, college has been the more exciting side, and march madness has got to be my favorite time for sports all year round. I just love making my own bracket and entering it in a pool and seeing who comes out on top.

So guys, let me hear your thoughts!
secretkeeper
Oh college is soo much better than NBA. In the NBA, its not about playing the game as a team, its more like they play to get paid, not to play for fun like they do in college. Yes there are some teams that get along well like the Pistions and Spurs. The NBA is flooded with the worlds best basketball players, and the worlds biggest egos. In college its not like that. For example, I have been an Illinois fan forever, and the way Bruce Webber handled the media and the players was excellent. He didn't let the popularity get to his players but he still let them enjoy the spotlight.

I think last years tourney was the best in a very long time. There were a lot of teams that lost in the first 2 rounds that were expected to go far like Kansas and Saracuse. The best game by far in that tourney was the Illinois-Arizona game. Down by 15 with 4 minuets left and then won it in overtime, excellent game. I was disappointed in their performance against UNC, but the better team won.

The NBA, I don't really go out of my way to watch like football or college basketball. I kinda keep an eye on players and not teams. Me being from Chicago, I cheer for the Bulls. I'm starting to like the Grizzles, a good team that will reach the playoffs this year. As for players, D-Wade and T-Mac are the players that I most idolize. I do watch the Rockets and Jazz more often now that they have some Illinois players on their team.

Oh wow, basketball. I have to agree here that college is way more awesome than the NBA. It's just that in college, everyone is out there for the love of the game, having fun, and trying a whole lot harder than most professionals seem to. Being from Illinois and having a lot of friends at U of I, last year was definitely awesome for me. I'm with Secret - the Illinois/Arizona game was about the best game ever. Hmm, I think Secret actually said pretty much everything I have to say. I've always cheered for the Bulls as well just because they're from Chicago, but I don't go out of my way to watch the NBA a whole lot. Which is probably a good thing since my roommate always changes the channel to the Lakers game when I have something else on. Grr, not a huge Lakers fan here myself.
Feeder
That's just how I feel about the matter, in the NBA it's more about the individual players whereas college is much more team-oriented.

Oh, and sorry about last year's championship mates, it was close and I was rooting for Illinois as well, but North Carolina was just so stacked. It's hard to root for a team like that. And did you know UNC isn't even ranked in the preseaon polls? I know they lost a bunch of their stars, but they still have some decent returning players and I expect they would have picked up a few McDonald's All-Americans during the off-season.

Oh, I forgot, just in case you two Illini fans don't know, I think they start the season ranked 25.
gryffindor89
Hmm... I like college and NBA about the same. My favorte NBA team is the Utah Jazz and they're doing really good so far this year at 4-2 and being in first place in the Northwest right now. They're awesome!!! My favorite college teams are Utah State and BYU. Utah State's gonna be really good this year again i think with Jaycee Carroll and all, but with BYU who knows they always have an on and off season. I'm pretty excited to watch the Jazz this season though! GO JAZZ!!! biggrin.gif
ile_ramone
I used to be a great NBA fan, but now i think, it's just not the same as it been before...But still i'm watching it and i support Denver Nuggets

They made a very good team last season i i think it's about time for them to do something bigger than just first stage of play-offs

They have a good team (Boykins, Miller, Anthony, Martin, Camby, Nene, Najera, Lenard...) and very good coach, George Karl

They are not having the best start of the season, but it will be better

And Carmelo Anthony is 100 times better than that LeBron James !!!
secretkeeper
Well just a quick post here. The coaches vs. Cancer is a very good start to College Basketball season. Illinois won tonight vs South Dakota State which they should have won easily. I was surprised that Shawn Pruitt had a good game. I played against him my freshman season and he wasn't good at all I thought. Ohh that was a fun game... Anyways, I hadn't posted her all week. Football is tomorrow but thats a whole different topic.
Feeder
Did anyone see the Wakeforest v. Florida game? Wake lost surprisingly. And Maryland also beat Farleigh Dickenson to open the season but not in the most convincing fashion. I'm a bit worried about this season, especially with our rival Duke ranked #1 unsure.gif .

Oh, and I made my High School Basketball team! Yeah me tongue.gif !
secretkeeper
Oh yeah and Mich. State lost too. That is a good thing for Illinois. Duke is really good this year but they won't win the championship this year. I a #1 seed has the toughest time to get to the championship. Last year was very rare where you had the #1 and #2 in the nation play for the championship and it made for a great game. I haven't been on ESPN in a while so I don't know what the new rankings are yet but they are supposed to change in a few places. Mich. St. will drop and so will Wake. Texas Tech will probably move to 24 or 25 and Flordia to the other spot.
hermione_rocks
I'm an NBA fan... i don't watch any college basketball.. i have to concentrate on school now so i can't really watch as much basketball as i want to...

i support the Lakers... i know they had a real bad season last year and aren't having a real good season this year either... but i still support them... i think that they were a lot better when Shaq was on the team, but i guess good things come and go... my friend and I always make fun of each other because she supports the Kings and loves Mike Bibby and i always pick on her when "her" team loses... it's fun!

i'm not a basketball player at all, but i think it's the best sport to watch... i also like watching basketball in the olympics... i can't believe that the USA lost last year ohmy.gif
Feeder
Oooh, you guys got Kwame, I feel so bad for you. We (the Wizards) have had to deal with his great disapointments on and off the court for the past three years. But now that we finally got rid of him I'm so happy. Sorry, but it looks like you guys are going to have to deal with him now.

I was also mad that USA didn't win the Olympics last year. But I wasn't too surprised because all the really good players were too scared to play...those wimps.
secretkeeper
OH BABY the Big Ten/ACC challenge starts this week. We are all saying "REMATCH" to all of the UNC fans because Illionis is going to walk all over them tomorrow. Indiana plays Duke, that might be a good game. I don't remember who Mich. St. or Ohio St. plays but I think this is the year that the Big Ten teams win. Oh baby, Dicky is going to be quiet this week. haha.
keepstar1331
secret your an Illini fan? awesome awesome awesome *lol* There not in the PAC10 so i can still love them wha ha ha.

Im thinking about getting season tix for the trailblazers, though ive never really been into them. Im still a lackers girl born and bred. I repeat, born and bred. I am not someone who joined the bandwagon like 3 years ago. I have piccy to prove it... in my 88 team shirt. (My dad is obsessed, ergo i no nothing other than lakers ball).

But i have a soft spot in me heart for the bulls. Last season was so amazing. We had so much fun watching the games and the atmosphere of united is stellar.
Feeder
Well Maryland is doing well at 4-1 after beating Minnesota. But up next is #22 GW who we lost to last year, so I've got my fingers crossed for that game.

QUOTE
I think this is the year that the Big Ten teams win

Nope, sorry Secret, you can put another win on the board for the ACC, but from what I hear, it was pretty close. Maybe next year, but at least Illinois beat UNC (right?).
secretkeeper
Gosh, Big Ten lost again. Some of these teams need to pick it up. The most exciting game of the Challange was the Indania-Duke game. The one post guy from Indania was awesome, 37 points and 12 boards against Shelldon Williams. O well, confrence games are starting soon and Illiniois has some compition this year in Ohio St., Indania, and Mich. St. so I hope 4th time is still a charm.
secretkeeper
Holy cow!! Did anybody watch the Duke-Texas game today. Duke killed them by 30!! J.J. Reddick had 41 points, a career high for him. And that was against te second best team in the nation. Indiana almost beat Duke and they are ranked 23 I think.

I hope I'm not talking to myself. Where are you Feeder and keepstar??
Feeder
I'm here, I'm here. Yes I did see most of that game but I turned it off when it was around 75-41 or something like that. Texas just looked awful, I don't know if they messed up in the polls, or if they just had a bad day (a really bad day tongue.gif).

Wait, was it Indiana where Reddick threw up that shot from half court and won at the buzzer? I almost cried when that happened tongue.gif .

And on a side note, Maryland plays BC today. Go Terps!
Rebecca Reynolds
For some reason, the NBA isn't very exciting to me. What i really like is college basketball. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to watch anything, so.....sorry I don't have much to say. I love on the guys' side Pittsburgh. On the girls' side I like Penn State and Tennesse.
Feeder
Yeah a lot of people feel the same way, college is more exciting.

I was watching ESPN today and there was a special on the Penn St. women's coach. It was about how she was against lesbians and would harass her players about their sexuality, and then kick them off if she found out they were gay. So I'm not so sure how I feel about Penn. St.; I hope they get rid of their coach.
Rebecca Reynolds
Oh, never heard bout that, I'm quite behind on college basktball. My teachers are killing me with homework, so I haven't had much free time.
Feeder
Oh yeah, Maryland beat BC! They were ranked 6 too I believe. We really needed that win too, after loosing our only two games against ranked oppenets so far...that win really helped.
El Barto
Hey, who did you guys pick to win it all in the NCAA tourney? I don't really pay attention to college basketball unfortunately, except around March of course. I picked Duke to face Connecticut, is that feasible?

As for the NBA, I support the Lakers the most since I grew in California and decided to pick them over the Warriors, Clippers, and Kings (ah, decisions at the time...I think it was 1998). But I really got into it when the Lakers were playing the Kings in the 2001 conference finals, been a crazy fan since. Of course, I lost faith in them for a while when they lost to the Pistons a couple years ago...but its all good now, oddly enough....even though they just lost to, ironically, the Kings by 16. I also support the Hornets, Suns, and Rockets...but I basically support every team that isn't playing the Lakers. I'll get into news, rumors, and all that stuff later...

But I agree that most play for individual gain in the NBA.
keepstar1331
I picked UCONN and Texas in the finals with UCONN winning it. I dunno, i put a few upsets in the brackets so who knows how it will really turn out. But im off to a good start because i picked Monmouth *lol*
felix_felicis_444
I am actually disappointed with how my brackets for the NCAA tourneament came out this year dry.gif ....I cannot point out what went differently, but something just does not seem right. I chose almost no upsets, which is very unusual for me. I am the type of guy who goes for his first instinct. I also do some research on the teams to make sure my decision is perfect.

Hmmmm...as of now, I have Duke, UCONN, Gonzaga, and Villanova going into the finals. Right there, I look at that and it seems strange. Anyway, I have Duke beating Gonzaga. With Villanova and UCONN I was extremely undecisive, but I finally settled on Villanova beating them....big mistake? I sure do hope not...what do you guys think? sad.gif

Anyway, not to my liking ( tongue.gif ), I have Duke winning the tourney. Hopefully I can win in my pool...for the past three years I have come in third, second, and first respectively, and you know what they say, the only place to go from first place is downhill. Hopefully I can defy gravity!! wacko.gif

I have the exact same thing for the final four...I was right last year with NC and Illinois (that was it right?). Then again, if we have the same thing it might turn out wrong biggrin.gif Happens every time.
corijp
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the tourney will come down to Duke and UCONN. I just hope Duke can hold it together long enough to take home the championship. I'm a huge Blue Devil's fan but it's almost comical how they seem to lose it once March rolls around. I'm just hoping we don't have a repeat of the '99 championship game- Duke dropped the ball, allowing UCONN to take the win... pinch.gif
El Barto
How'd you guys do in the first round? I was right half the time...literally! biggrin.gif Though I'm not sure if thats a good thing or not, but Duke and Connecticut are still in.

The Knicks just beat the Pistons...who knew?! However, the Pistons were short-handed.
keepstar1331
So far im 27 for 33, and thats including the play in game. So im doing pretty good. the only games i didnt get right were Michigan State, Oklahoma, Marquette, Kansas, Syracuse, and of course... IOWA!!!! I totally thought they had it in the bag and then Brunner missed that free throw... and i couldnt beleive that Northwestern State made that like... impossible three pointer for the win...

None of my loses really effect my brackets exept i had syrcuse beating LSU. So im not too upset. ALot of people i know had kansas going to elite eight though... thats gotta be tough...

I am soo mad at everyone on that Iowa team. They won the Big Tenn Tourney and they go and losed to Northwestern St.??!!?? I was so angry when I found out they lost. They were one of my 16 teams. Syracuse was a big disappointment for me. They did amazing in the Big East Tourney and that made me believe that they were going to do something. So that was another one of my 16 teams. And then Kansas, thats all I'm going to say about that. Thats 3. Then Mich. St. I didn't have them coming out of the second round thank goodness I had Oklahoma pulling off some big upsets. Tennessee lost too. I thought this year there weren't going to be any upsets, man were the experts wrong. My last team that I am disappointed at is Illinois. Losing to Washington is a bad way to go out.

So this year, my team is Boston College. They gave Duke a run for their money a couple of times. They would have beat them if the ref's had eyes and saw that last foul on Sheldon Williams. I have them going to the Final Four and losing to UConn and UConn beating Texas in the final game.
keepstar1331
Well the last two days have been tramatic for me in my brackets. Since Ohio lost one of my final four teams is out. But Texas, Uconn, and Gonzaga are still in so im ok. I dunno my heartbreaks were illinois, Ohio, and Tennesee. Im grumpy right now so im not going to vent! but i hate when my brackets get thrown off.

I agree with you secret that BC is going to go far. Definatly to final four *grumbling* If they plat Uconn its going to be a great game!
El Barto
None of the teams I picked for the final four made it. LSU is going to play UCLA, and George Mason is going to play Florida. I'm gonna pick LSU...for now laugh.gif
TH3 CHOS3N ON3
Well im a pretty big bball fan. I went to a few games recently and there were some startling results with duke losing to VCU. I was just wondering what you think the turn out will be.

Hi, I merged your topic here to refresh the discussion, feel free to contact me.
Silence Dogood
Yeah, Duke losing to VCU was pretty amazing to say the least. I had a good long chuckle when I heard. haha I think Kansas is going to win it all. Ohio State is going to lose to Tennessee, and Pitt is going to beat UCLA.
Hilly
Oh, I totally know what you mean! That was the funniest thing ever! We've been watching the tournament in school because all of us (including our teachers) are really into it. We all have a bracket and a contest going. Here is an article about everything that happened today if you're interested.
Silence Dogood
Hilly, I spent the whole day glued to the TV watching it. My eyes are a little wacko.gif right now, they're starting to hurt a little. oh well...

I should know this, but when does the Sweet 16 start? Isn't it 2 days?
After the Burial
I thought it might be worthwhile to bring this old thread back to the top of the list. My NBA team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, beat the defeding champions, San Antonio Spurs, last night. I am in a good mood today.

So, anyone have thoughts on basketball lately? The Celtics start of the seaon has been impressive. I am curious how well the Lakers will do without Andrew Bynum.
lancelot243
Well basketball season has been good and bad on my part so far. My NBA team, the Hornets, is having a great season so far, but my two favorite college teams, LSU and Maryland, are not looking so good. LSU is playing awful this season, due mostly to bad coaching, in fact they are losing to vanderbuilt right now...

And my favorite team, the UMD terapins, is having its worst start of the season in something like 10 years, but hopefully they will be able to turn it around. They play at #1 North Carolina today at 3:30 p.m. (eastern U.S. time). And they play there archrivals Duke next sunday at home.
HJP/HJG_TrueLove
I figured I should try and bring this thread back up because of the NBA finals. For every one that doesn't know this year it is the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers which is basically the rivalry of the NBA. I am supporting the Celtics basically because I don't like the Lakers because of Bryant. Right now the series sits at 3-2 Celtics and the final two games will be played in Boston (if necessary). Two of my top five favorite players are playing for the Celtics, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. My other three f)avorite players are Dwayne Wade, Chris Paul, and Kyle Korver (he played basketball for a Creighton in college which is one of the Nebraska universities).

Go Celtics!!!

I know this is a little late but my final 4 was Louisville, Texas, UCLA, and Kansas. My championship game was UCLA and Kansas with UCLA winning. This year was the longest all 4 of my final 4 teams lasted (they all lasted at least until the elite 8).
Nasuada
Eh, I'm not really into basketball myself. My dad and the boys are though. My dad likes the Celtics, so sometimes I'll sit and watch with him if he's watching a game. My younger brothers play basketball. So, I'm a little familiar with the sport. Not a great fan though. Sorry.
HJP/HJG_TrueLove
The Boston Celtics took the NBA Finals 4-2! This is their 17th NBA Title! The Celtics are 9-2 in the Finals with the Lakers! Their 39 point victory was an NBA Finals clincher record! Paul Pierce, the Celtics team captain was the Finals MVP!

Game 1 June 5 9:00 p.m. Boston 98-88 W |1-0 BOS
Game 2 June 8 9:00 p.m. Boston 108-102 W |2-0 BOS
Game 3 June 10 9:00 p.m. @ Los Angeles 87-81 L | 2-1 BOS

The 12 player roster for the US Olympic basketball team has been finalized. The team consists of Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Kobe Bryant, Chris Bosh, Jason Kidd, Deron Williams, Michael Redd, Tayshaun Prince, Carlos Boozer, and Dwight Howard. So the team has six guards, five forwards, and a center. The Head Coach is Mike Krzyzewski and the assistant coaches are Jim Boeheim, Nate McMillan, and Mike D'Atoni.
nicky potter
I'm glad that the Celtics won. I was rooting for them since I found out that they won. Especially when I saw that the Lakers were against them. Sorry Kobe is all around talented player, but his arrogance, cockyness and ball hogniess gets him no where. Posey , I can't spell his last name was awesome! He has always been amazing 3 point shooter. I am from Miami and I have to say that one of the stupidest thing that the Miami Heat did after winning the 2006 Championship, was trading him. They should have kept him. Maybe we might have had a chance to another title tongue.gif Dwayne Wade is good, but I don't know how much longer the kid is going to stay with the Miami Heat... It would be ashame if they can't win another title and he leaves. He sometimes is like a one man team. :/

Sorry for the random meshing of teams lol I was on a roll and didnt want to stop laugh.gif
HarryPotterNut
College is much better than Professional basketball. In the NBA, I like the Heat and the Bulls and the Spurs. In college I like the Kansas Jayhawks. There is no team better than the Jayhawks and they are going to win the National Championship this season, mark my word!
HJP/HJG_TrueLove
Im excited for next years NCAA basketball... I love the Oklahoma State Cowboys!!! Even though they lost their best player in Byron Eaton who made the shot that put them in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament in amazing fashion. My favorite NBA team is the Celtics who should have a good season as long as Pierce, Allen, and Garnett can stay healthy.
