Full Version: Why Should We Dislike This Film?

Well, we should dislike this film because it's not exactly the way we thought it would be. Now, that's me being really frank about it. You see, i woke up early just to be one of the first ones to see the film here in the Philippines. I was so in a hurry that I skipped breakfast just to be sure that I'll have the best seat at the cinema. Guess what? i ended up being one of the first ones to be upset with what i've seen from the film.

There was no Winky and Dobby. I think including them in this movie will make it more beautiful.

I was expecting to see Harry giving his prize to the twins for Ron's new robes.

Also, i hoped to see Ron asking for Viktor's autograph.

There were more scenes in the book that we can never find in this film so I really think we should hate this movie.

But hey, Harry's scenes with Cho Chang are all sweet. The ball scenes are all nice for me. These are only the few parts in the movie that are likeable.

I wish they did their best to put everything in the movie. As a Harry Potter fan, I am willing to sit inside the movie house for three hours or even more just as long as the film gives us exactly what are in the book 4. Am I right? I know we are all Harry potter fans who are willing to see the film just as how we had imagined it while reading the book.

So, should we hate it or not?
I guess, not that much.

Hey pearl,
I think I'm in the same case as you. I live in America and I went to the 12:01 slot for harry potter and the Goblet of Firewhich was the first slot. At the time I was watching the movie I started saying somethings I didn't like about it. But then i realized that this movie was done different from the others, better. It has become dark, like the book, has gained humor, had a very good plot, and put the main parts of the films in. If you look at that without reading the book it is a very good movie. Now if you wanted exactly what was in the the book your looking at an over expensive movie that could leave the later movies with no budget. Also most harry potter lovers want exactly whats in the books which would make this film over 6 hours long, and some very boring parts that reading is fine but watching isn't so great. tell me that you want to be in a theater with some of those people who talk through the whole movie for 6 hours. Even if there was an intermission it would still be bloody mad. So look at the product that was, enjoy it, and maybe we can hope that 5,6, and 7 will be two discs.

you should dislike the movie because, of some of the new characters in this movie. such as, victor . but, other than that their is no
other reason to dislike it.

I think I'll just avoid this film altogether because I've only read the books once and I don't want it to skew my knowledge of what really happened by the time I have to read the last book. laugh.gif

I went into this movie knowing it wasn't going to be like the book, so I was a bit prepared.

Here's what I hated. The first part with the Quidditch cup was extremely rushed. The movie could have been done without it completely.

The revamp where Barty JR is with Voldemort....

The lack of ludo bagman.

The nixing of how important a character Rita is. That was one of the most brilliant parts of the book.

The maze was different and kinda seemed like they didn't know how to translate that task, so they made the maze alive....wha...?

Moody seems less intimidating in the movie.

Dumbledore seemed less confident in the movie.

They didn't push the Hermione/Ron romance enough.

The prize money and joke shop were eliminated.

I could go on, but those are things I really missed.

That's me though. My girlfriend has never read the books, but followed the movie perfectly fine.

I think from being such die hard fans, the further the movies go, the more dissapointed we'll be.

Sorry, but I think you all are giving bogus reasons. If you went to the movie expecting it to be a carbon copy of the book then Im sorry but you shouldn't have even bothered to see it in the first place because we've known for literally months that all those things you've named weren't going to be in the movie. And the fact that none of the previous movies have been exact replicas of the books should have tipped you off that this one wasn't going to be either.

Whether or not the movie is good or bad isn't determined by whether or not it has everything in it that the book had. Judge the movies on their own meritts. Rowling approves what stays, what goes, and whats added in the end, and if it's good enough for her then it should be good enough for you.
samsmom
I don;t think that's true. I went knowing that things would be different. How could you make such a huge book into one movie!

I was disappointed at the things that were cut. Some, I think are important.
Like the creatures in the third task. I know things had to be cut, but we didn't need to see Barty Jr. in the beginning to understand. That was an unnecessary change that hurt the story.

I also felt that everything was very rushed. No real time was spent on anything. It should have been done in two installments. There don't have to be 7 movies just because there are 7 books... it's better to be truer to the book, and with a fanatic fan base, you'd make twice the money. I stood on line for 1 1/2 hours to see it on opening day. I was first on line and myself and the next three people on line were over 40 and there for ourselves (with no kids).

I agree with Solorund, I think people are complaining far too much. I've already said in another post where people are complaining that if you're going to be so judgemental and expect everything to be in it that you want to be then there is no point seeing it. Everyone has their own imagination and favourite bits that they are looking forward to so whatever happens there will always be people who are never satisfied. I was a bit disappointed in some things being cut out but I think they did a fantastic job and the I think the films are really good, especially the last two recent films!

Yeah, right... Let's hope that the next HP movies will be in two discs. I think it'll all be worth watching.

I’ve been reading some of the posts here and I guess I’m one of the few who thought the movie sucked. It’s like Mike Newell went up to JK Rowling and slapped her in the face.

Here are things that I thought were wrong with it:

Direction – Many shots were basic, bland and boring which is fine if you’re filming a comedy but not a fantasy epic.

Many times the actors looked awkward on screen, like they didn’t know what to do with themselves.

There were also scenes where it seemed like Emma, Dan or Rup got poor direction – the emotional out-burst at the end of the Yule Ball between Ron and Hermione felt extremely exaggerated. And I agree with Binx on Dumbledore.

Editing – Some shots were too short while others were way too long. I know they had to cut the QWC but the progression from when they’re in the stadium to the panic at the campgrounds was done horribly. And I would have rather seen more of what happened in the giant maze than watch that stupid dragon chase Harry around Hogwarts which didn’t even happen in the book.

Scenes were often repetitive. When Harry was in the bubble bath and tried to cover himself so MM wouldn’t see him, they showed him doing it like three times – hey I get it, he’s uncomfortable, I don’t need to see it from five different angles to understand.

Music – Totally unoriginal and common. There is not one time where I remember even registering the music (unlike in POA where “Buckbeak’s Flight” stuck in my mind right away). Even when Harry succeeded in a task, the music was so typically triumphant it could have been used in Kicking and Scream after the kids win the final soccer game.

Story – When Dumbledore tells the students the truth about Voldemort at the end of the year, they’re all just sitting there with the most passive look on their face. And wasn’t it like a huge scandal with Harry being called a liar?

I love Snape and his importance in the story but they ruined his character in this film. In the book he’s completely against Harry participating in the Tournament. Film version Snape says ‘Oh headmaster we must follow the rules.’ What!!!

And the worst mistake – they introduced so much interesting history in the POA film with the Shrieking Shack scene. Snape, Lupin and Black grew up with Harry’s parents and they are such great characters. They should have definitely included the scene near the end where Harry’s in the hospital telling them all what happened and Dumbledore makes Snape and Black shake hands. More importantly this is also the part where Dumbledore sends Snape off to do an unknown task, one which has been debated among HP fans since the book came out and something which is really important considering what happens in Half-Blood Prince.

There’s a differnece between not including everything in the book and totally missing the heart of the story.

I don't think any of the changes affected the movie to much except that harry didn't know Barty Jr. was bad until the very end
LoLa
i thot the movie was ok but mostly bad because they cut out a lot of important parts that were necessary. it didnt make any sense! mad.gif
they only gave brief explanations on each chapter:they didnt show nything on the SPEW.....

and they didnt show the imperius curse on crouch's son./..
it really was not what i thot it would be....i thot it would be a lot betta.. unsure.gif but nywayz why cant peter jackson direct harry potter 5? althought hp5 book is boring..he wouldmake the movie a lot more interesting! rolleyes.gif

Blah, i totally agree with you in the music section. Buckbeack's flight in simply AMIZING.

But what to dislike? Imo it was so much rushed. And well, for me - Who has never read any of the books wink.gif - I did'nt understand what priore encatatum was (voldemort and harrys wand together etc). They should've explained it, but otherwise it was perfect.

In the next movie, i expect to hear John Williams's Brilliance again, and more of the explonation part.

Have fun. (:
fjkrs
Blah exactly! You said everything that there was to say! I really don't have to say much except I really didn't like the moive as a Harry Potter film. As any other film it wouldn't have been too bad but not as a film based off the book.
But yeah Blah you nailed it that was it.
alright then bye!

i just didnt like it that dumbledore was shouting and being mad all the time (a main reason i dont like the new dumbledore, too aggresive)
Spider22
I didn't like the Director's style, it seemed he was taking a risk with what he was doing, his risk did pay off mostly as anyone that liked it loved it. After the film I thought what the film would be like to someone who hadn't read the book, they would have no idea what was going on! I was also dissapointed about the fact that in the third task they replaced fighting monsters with running from evil bushes.
Kymar
Yes, this movie butchered the story in the book, but I think you have to consider that they can never include everything from the books in the movies (or you would have a 12 hour long movie), so there are always going to be things that are cut. Also JK works with the movie-makers on making sure they include the relevant points.

I think people need to consider the books/movies separately. If you do this, GoF was actually a very good movie, but if you compare it with the book, then of course the movie will come off worse
FawkesThePheonix
This movie was very butchered. They left out the whole mystery of Mr.Crouch and his son. How they escaped Azkaban, The polyjuice potion switch, the transfiguring Mr. Crouch into a bone.

They also left out all of the obsticals in the maze, which sucked!

I think it was a good movie, but it would of been betterit they could of squeezed a few more things in it.

Wow first post on this forum for 2007 okayy. I felt that the reason this movie was so short, was because of all the action going on. Let me explain: in the books there is alot less dialog than some of the others. This is becuase it has a lot of action going on. The people in the movie jsut put the action in they don't need to waste time explaining it because people can see it. But the things with dialog in the book were cut because they weren't that important to the plot and mostly delt with things to make the movie/book funnier or quirkier. I would love to have a super long movie for the true fans, but it's pretty far fetched. It's not that i didn't like too many scenes int he movie, but it was mostly because I pictured things differently. The task where he must go into the lake I pictured completely different. I also didn't like the fact that Rita Skeeter was completely edited out. But i won't complain at the fact that I love the scene with Harry in the prefect's bathroom.
Packers
i agree snuffles4ever the movie was bad not befcause the acting or directing but because the movie cut out everything except for he tasks no world cup no reaction between caractors non trio. The movie was just moving from task to task without all that stuff that made it great to read. Only things abvout or nesseisarty for the tassts were included. I especilly did not like how it went from task two right to task three. What about rita skeeter being caught, they needed her.

I actaully woke up thinking about this this morning. The only thing I really hated about the movie was the whole dragon scene where it chases him around the school and tries to climb the school when it can fly and breathe fire!!! blink.gif How retarted was that. I mean, maybe I'm imagining things but I thought the dragon was chained to that ground for that reason... I don't think the champions could even leave the field.. or pitch, wherever he was. I also hated that Dumbledore was like trying to basicaly kill Harry when he managed to get his name in the Goblet of Fire. I'm quite sure DUmbledore spoke in a calm but fierce voice, something like that.

the movie was pretty good over all, and i liked the way all the characters were acted out. (okay, the yule ball was pretty over dramtic.) and i liked the music very much, especially during the intro. it's true, i wish they showed more characters and scenes, but oh well right?
SavingSirius
When I first found out that Richard Harris had died I was upset as he did an incredibly good Dumbledore. However, thier casting of Micheal Gambon, I feel was a bad choice, as in the GoF he seems very angry and uptight. This is not the Dumbledore we know and love, Dumbledore was always calm and kind he hardly ever got angry. It saddened me when he did get angry and upset, as it just isn't Dumbledore enough to me.

Some people say that they can't do it by the book as it would be hours and hours long, am I not the only one who would sit down and watch a whole film that was word for word from the book?

They changed plot changes to which I thought wasn't very good. I think they said in an interview they changed it at the beginning in the dream so people who hadn't read the book would get it. And I was thinking, if they haven't read the book why are they seeing the film? I don't care if the people who haven't read the book don't get it to be honest. If they don't get it they should read the book.

One thing I did enjoy a lot was Voldemort. They portrayed Voldemort exactly how I pictured him when I first read the books. Bald, slits for nostrils, bare feet, long billowing black cloak. Excellent. [:

i dont think we really should dislike the flim. but there are many thing that we should dislike that is IN the flim. like they should have showed the qudditch match and sirius should have been the flim.
( Half-Blood-Prince)
i actually really like the film but as people have said before me its not that we should dislike the film its things about it that we dislike...i really thought voldy looked cool but the red eyes would have made it all the better and am sure it wouldnt have been too hard to do...also was looking forward to seeing the worldcup was really let down after the teams entered i mind thinking this is gonna be great then for it to cut right to the after party sad.gif also missed the whole dobby story but guess they have to cut something but just feel that voldy should have red eyes
Abraxas
You complain when they don't put as much as you'd want into the movie. But here's the thing - you'd also complain if the movie was 16 hours long, which it'd have to be to fit in most of the stuff you were complaining wasn't there. dry.gif

Still, David Tennant didn't get even nearly enough screen time. Anyway, my answer to your question is, no, we should not hate this movie. Movie-making is hard work for all those involved, and we should be grateful for what they do just to give us two hours of darn good entertainement. happy.gif
