Hello penheart and welcome to VTM forums.

before you post agian, please spend some time over in the RULES forums, the link is in my signature. We do not allow one line posts in these forums because we like to encourage lively discussions and debates. One line just doesn't gve our other members anything to respond to. So please expand on your thoughts next time. Why do you think that? What made you think it? Do you have any evidence? Things like that.
That being said, I am not sure what you mean by How Old is Harry in our Mind? Since we all read the books, we know just how old he really is. I know as a reader, I se him growing as I read the dfferent books.

To the OP, I know what you mean.
I think of Harry as 17 years old. I think it's quite rediculous that they claim him to be 14 in the movies. I understand why they have to do it but they aren't fooling anyone. He doesn't look or act 14. I know he's 16 in reality but I still think of him as 17 because he is so mature for his age.

I suppose that he really is 17 now well 16. But i only thought that some often treat him as a child EG. like when he arrives at sirius's place and molly says hes to young to hear what our most annoying enemie is. Sorry if i annoyed any death eaters or the dark dude himself. Try to solve the puzzle of the day post your answers.

I think of Harry as his age in the book. I mean, he doesn't mature physically in my mind, but I usually see him as his age. he definitely acts more mature, so right now I see him as 16 as he is in HBP.

well i think of him depending the book im reading of course, but he sometimes act alittle more inmature , and sometimes acts like and adult, but its the growing upo process, you have to think of him acordding the age rowling is describing, if you think of him in a diferent age maybe you are not reading very good or need to concentrate more jejeje

I always imagine him and all the characters his age as though they're my age. I'm 13, so Harry looks like a 13 year old in my mind. Dunno about thinking of him as 14 or 15 when he's 17 because he's matured a lot over the course of his fourth and sixth years. I saw him as 14 in HBP though, since he's gotten so much older...practically an adult wizard. Amazing how far difference our ages seem now, and how little they'll matter once he's 25 and I'm 22

This is actually a very interesting question; I myself don't imagine him as any one age throughout the entire series. You see I have a very vivid imagination, as my family will tell you. So what I actually do is start out in book one imagining him as eleven, then age him gradually as I read through all the books, pretty much without even meaning to, and I do the same with all the other students.
P.S. Penheart, it's Amos Diggory.

I think harry acts like a different age at different times. In the books it sometimes seems younger than he is. he has temper tantrums and other characters treat him like a little kid sometimes. other times, he acts really mature. Most of the maturity shows when hes in real danger.

Good question. I think I see him as 12 or 13 years old, I must admit. I don't know why, and it's not beacuse I'm 12 or 13 years old, 'cause I'm 14. I sort of dunno why I see him as a 12 year old boy... Actually, I don't think so much about his age wheh I read the books, and... well, I'm a bit imbarrassed about this, but here we go: I don't even think about him with glasses! I don't know why, I know he has glasses, but I still don't see him with it... Anyway, good question!

I see him as Dan looked in the first 2 movies when I read the first 2 books, and see him the way he looks in POA for the rest. For some reason I think Dan looks older in POA than in GOF.

I think that he grows a year older every time a new book appears, so wouldn't he be 17 now? Ona of the reasons I think so is that I'm myself 17 (but soon 18!) and he has same feelings than I have been. And that is too deffinetly one reason I like the whole series so much

I too think of Harry as my age. I place my opinion of him as a relflection of me. His age is one thing that is reflected.
I voted 16. A. Thats how old I am. and B. Thats how old he is in HBP, so it all works out.

hey dw i think a lot of us have different images in our minds about the characters, that's why books are so **** good! i mean they allow your imagination to flow and everything. I am sure i'm not the only one that thinks the movies ruin the books. However saying that i do enjoy watching the movies as long as i don't compare them to the books i watch them just as a normal movie because if i compare them i start finding so many things wrong with it. I also think that in the book i usually see harry without glasses, for one thing i know that when movie 1 first came out i hated the characters and how they were portrayed so much...but now i'm used to it...anyway to answer your question penheart i think that he does mature over time, especially growing wise beyong his years in some aspects because the events he faces change him. I usually think of him around my age as well because sometimes i get lost in the book and then suddenly everyone becomes more my age so it's easier to relate to...however that doesn't mean i see him as 15 or 16 year old when he was 11, i can still tell he is a lot younger...mostly i find that i go less by his age and think of him more as how mature he is, because at times i agree he really does seem inmature and agro and other times as i said he is wise beyond his years and very mature...

Can people of 17 grow facial hair because i cant imagine harry with a beard or a moustache or anything. The main points harry is mature in are
His abilty to survive danger
His moral fibre (shown in the maze and actually mentioned in the lake)
and his personality (He is growing quite arrogant and fairly confident in hisself)

yes people of 17 can grow facial hair but harry with a moustache would wreck the whole story

i mean how can we take him seriously if he's become a hitler wannabe...? jokes...anyway yea he is maturing because of the events that occur, the dangers he faces shapes him...

In PS/SS I see him as 11 year old Dan, and the same goes for CoS, but it is 12 year old Dan. In PoA, the only thing different is that he is taller, and the same in GoF. In OotP, I see Harry as Dan in PoA, but with his hair spiked. And in HBP, I see like a 5'9",5'10",5'11" Dan in PoA, but with slightly wider shoulders and more musclur.

I imagine him being 12 and 13. I'm about to be 12 myself, and i can see myself getting into a situation where I can be in big trouble, and a kid is a kid, careless and all, and Harry, is definetly, mostly careless about his own life, and he certainly gets himself in trouble. And in HbP, Harry is talking to the minister, and he sure sounds like a kid there himself.

Well i think I must've been about 11 or 12 when i first read the books, and that is how old i imagined Harry. And now I am 17 and I see Harry as 17. So I think now, from probably the 3rd book onwards i see him, and all the characters in his year ie hermione, draco etc as 17 years old. i know its weird but i just picture them as being my age most of the time!

Dec 24 2005, 06:49 AM
I said he was 17. I could see him be younger in my mind when I go back and read the first couple of books, maybe. But not now. With every book, I see him grow, so I really couldn't imagine him as anything else. I pretty much just picture him a bit taller with every book, I guess.
Now that the Dark Lord is back and in full swing, and the pressure is on Harry to beat him, he seems to be aging rapidly as event after bad event piles up before him, each one making him realize just how big of a threat that the Dark Lord is, and that he must face him alone. Most people don't have giant challenges like that, which is probably good, as such tasks demand a certain level of maturity. It really is weak reasoning on my part, seeing how I'm 18 and have had a rather sugary life thus far, but experiences like that would have to age you.

I myself am 13. So I have some teen problems to, with guys, and school sucking and stuff. But he...has some of the same problems and he is soposed to be 17? No I see him as a 14 or 15 year old boy.
I see him as the type of boy who has some girl problems, and doesnt have huge confidence in himself. Alot like teenage boys in my grade. I still see him as a 14 year old boy, and thats just what I think I guess.

I'm about to go fifteen, but I see him exactly as he is in the books. They are written so well and in character, that the whole style matches Harry's age. The first few are really easy to read and digest because he is young, but when we get to five and six, the books have greater depth and meaning to them.
As I read each book, the language takes me to his age, and reading through the series means I grow with him while I read. It's sort of hard to explain, but I know what I mean which is a rarity.
Book one is him at eleven and I see him as eleven.
Book six is him at sixteen and I see him as sixteen.
I think that's what I mean...

I imagine Harry as close to the age that he is during the book. So Book 1, eleven, Book 2, twelve, etc. etc. You should add that to the poll, maybe?

I sort of picture him my height when ever age or book it is. So my height when I was eleven, or my height when I was fifteen, etc. etc.

I agree with magical man. I see him as old as he is in the book i'm reading. If i was reading PS-then he'd be 11, and so on.
But overall, like if i met him-i'd imagine him like about-14, 15? A round about my age really. I guess it depends.

I get what you mean. I normally don't really picture what people look like when I read about them unelss I've actually seen them. For example before I actually sw the Harry Potter movies I didn't really picure him. I knew he had green eyes, dark hair, and glasses and all that, but never really pictured him in my mind until seeing the movies. That's when I started pciture Daniel/Harry as my Harry in my head. I picture him mostly as a 13 year old. I guess it's because I liked the way he looked in the 3rd movie or something. I tend to associate the books and movies togethr alot. But when he gets to 16 I had a hard time picturing him. So I sort of made my own version of him in my mind. He looks sort of liek hsi dad to me in my mind. I have a hard time concentrating on his looks while reading so I just go with the fact that he's thriteen all the time. But I do remember of coarse that his real age is 16, I just picture him looking 13.
I'm not sure if I made any sense what so ever in that, but I did my best.

I imagine Harry with the same age as me (15),because I always have imagined Harry like a classmate or a best friend that is not going to make you alone.

Mar 26 2007, 04:07 AM
While he certainly does mature and get older throughout the series, I think fifteen is a fair age... right in the middle, to some degree, and has the maturity thing down.
The fifth book is where he, in my opinion, really makes that leap from possibly being able to pass for thirteen to being a mature, angsty guy in his late teens.
Seventeen I can't imagine because then he'd be an adult, essentially. Plus he wouldn't be in Hogwarts, so...

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by this question, but if you mean as how old do I perceive him will all of the books taken together then I'd have to go with 15 years old. There are times when Harry seems to know what he's doing or what he will do then there are times when he seems like a misunderstood child that wants to be protected by parents (or teachers in his case?).

I see Harry growin up in each book, I think that the writing of the books shows the characters grow as people as they age. At the same time, in the early books, I do think of Harry as older then his young year of 11 or 12. The movies don't have an impact on how old I imagine Harry to be, although, Harry's growth is also visible by the year in the movies.

When I'm reading the books, I think of him as the age he is at the time I'm reading. But other than that I think of him as my age, which is currently 15. I'm not really sure why, I think it has to do that I've always felt like I've grown up with him. I'm sot sure if that makes complete sense but that's the way I've always felt.

Harry is at that funny age. Not yet an adult bt no longer a child.
Its funny bacause depending on who you see talking about him shows how they treat him differently
Mrs Weasley sees not just Harry but all the Weasley family that are still at school and Harry and Hermione as kids
Where as Dumbledore sees and treats Harry as an adult as he keeps saying Harry has done and seen more than most adults.
