Yay! First topic started ever! When I went on the Leaky Cauldron today and saw this link to Forbes' list of the richest fictional characters, I had to let all of you know about it and see what your take is.

Here's the link to the main article, which shows you who else is the richest of the rich in the fictional world:

http://www.forbes.com/2005/11/29/forbes-fi...fict15land.html

And here's the specifics on Lucius' Malfoy's wealth:

http://www.forbes.com/lists/2005/fictional/15.html

And how he got it (mild warning for the younger set: a little innuendo and language in this article):

http://www.forbes.com/2005/12/01/potter-ma...foyprofile.html

Besides being funny, what'd you think? Is it possible that Lucius has acquired his wealth off of muggle investments? Or is the possibility, like this article, a joke? Did you feel like he deserved a higher spot on the countdown or do you wonder how he could've gotten on there at all? Any thoughts are welcome, or if you'd just like a laugh, this article is good for that too.

Mod Edit: Since we get numerous news stories on a daily basis. I have lumped them all together in to one thread. If you have read an article related to the HP verse...actors, awards shows etc, then post here. Thanks
Aethonon
That was great! I had to read it to my son.

Yeah, when you think about it, I think it would be relatively easy for Lucius to break out of Azkaban now that the demoentors no longer guard it. Wouldn't be surprised....
ohhector
I just saw that, and decided to finally register with this forum so I could post it....and here it is, already posted...haha.

I was very shocked to see him pop up on that list! Not expecting it, at all.
Feeder
Heh, I'm sure Draco was very proud tongue.gif . Lex Luthor was on the list too, go Lex (he's from the Superman comics and Smallville)!

I wonder how they go about actually determining who's the richest...

Ahhh, sorry for stealing your thunder there. If any good thread topics pop up in the future on Lucius Malfoy, they're totally yours.

I was rather touched that Jed Clampett made the list, personaly. The write-up on Bruce Wayne was fun too. Lex Luthor being on the list was completely awesome...didn't even think about him being on it, but it makes complete sense.

I want to know how Lucius goes about buying stocks and bonds. He either has a very savy muggle stock broker that he's bending unto his will or wizards know more about investing than what I formerly gave them credit for....
Mini Potter
Warner Bros. and Disney made a deal that there might be a Harry Potter attraction in one of the Disney lands.
zyra123
Can you please provide a link where you've seen this news? It's the only way we can be sure it's from a reliable source and not a rumor. Thanks.
Aethonon
Yep, I saw this story right on the homepage of VTM, but it has been debunked as a simple rumor. There will be no attraction, according to officials. Hope that helps! smile.gif

EDIT: Mini Potter, Zyra, sorry. It's no longer on the VTM homepage--it's slipped down off of it. I think I read it several weeks ago. But it defintely said it was just a rumor.
Hermione Nymphadora
I'm not sure that they would ever do anything like that. I mean, they may have attractions for things like Star Wars or super heros but I highly doubt they would do it for Harry Potter. While it's a gigantic franchise, I'm not sure that it has the mass appeal such as Star Wars (I mean, they have actual conventions just for Star Wars. There aren't any conventions just for Harry Potter yet). Star Wars is also different because it's a series that sort of continues on. We know that HP ends after book 7 -- no "if's", "and's" or "but's" about it. However, George Lucas' series is one that he continues (possibly a bit to the death, honestly...). There is a definite end to Harry Potter so does it have the staying power to warrant an long standing attraction? I'm not too sure... Also, the Star Wars series spans over nearly three decades so it's reached almost every age-group possible. While we know that the Harry Potter books (mainly book 4 on) are not meant for small children, a lot of the public just views it as a kids' story. However, Star Wars (partially because of it's huge time span) was geared towards older teens and adults. I'm not sure if any of that makes sense to you all, but it does to me. hehe

Well, I'm filled with all the warm and fuzzies you can get from a piece of news like this.

I'm gratified that our Harry Potter incarnate takes such an interest in HP himself that he wanted the tapestry.

I can't praise him enough for once again contributing to a very worthy cause in the process.

And whatever his plans for the piece of parchment, I'm certain he'll do the right thing with it.

okay ... now the weird reactions of some people have cught me off guard. Just because Dan's mother quips something halfheartidly in a moment of great pleasure, people appear to be getting all analytical about why she said it, even frowning on her defensiveness ... offtopic.gif Where has that come from???

Is it just me who thinks she meant it to be a lighthearted comment??

And one other thing that jacked me up a little was all the talk about not just how much he paid for it (because you can expect that to come up for discussion), but also his whole earnings became an issue, reflecting on things like - well he's just got too much money if he's buying something like that blah blah... What? huh.gif I must be missing something because I really thought the whole idea of him buying it was a really pleasant surprise, not some sort of publicity trick???

If you haven't already, read the comments on the home page about Dan's purchase, but be warned, you may want to bash your head against the screen every now and then... ermm.gif

When I read the article I was thinking what a nice thing for him to do. I had no idea about the comments until after I read your post. I just don't understand some of the comments in there.

One of the charities we contribute to is to supply books for the poor here in the States. Reading is the first step for someone who wants to escape poverty. A child who reads at a young age will be much more successful than a person struggling to read as an adult. When I saw what charity Dan's donation was going to I thought it was great.

I believe it was done completely as a donation for a very worthy cause. The school my daughters attends runs several auctions each year to raise funds. The last one, they were auctioning off home made cakes. Several were involved in bidding wars and ended up paying $300+ for a cake. I say the cakes they were nothing special. They were paying to support the school, not buy a cake.

I saw also several people comment it was too much for the Family Tree. Even completely disregarding the charity part, I think it is a good investment. In ten years if Harry Potter is still hot, I bet that Family Tree can be auctioned for at least double Dan's investment. Attaching Dan's name to it will make it even more valuable.

I completely agree. I have yet to read any of these "comments" but I'm astounded by just what the originator of this post said. huh.gif Nobody in their right mind should have a problem with Dan buying this because he's giving quite a bit of his money to charity which is incredibly generous; I don't care what the item is or how much it went for, it's generous and thoughtful of him to contribute.

I was quite shocked when I first heard that he bought it; not because Dan bought it but because I didn't know Dan was such a fan of the books. Needless to say I was kind of happy to hear this because it shows that he really loves the books and will probably stick around to continue the movies which I'm looking forward to. biggrin.gif No other thought crossed my mind when I heard this, so I'm really stunned to hear what people are saying about the whole situation.
Nicky_92
That is really funny! laugh.gif I wouldn't be surprised if he aquired his wealth from Muggle investments, he did inherit a lot of his money from his father. What is $900 million in English pounds? I think he deserved a higher post, he is wel known throughout the Magical Community and I'm sure he has got more money then we think he has.
tuni
I m really happy to hear this news that Malfoy is in richest [ppl] people list, because i really admired him.

MOD EDIT: Netspeak found in your post. Please type it all out next time.

There's a nice wee film about the Hogwarts Express on the ScotlandonTV website, which we thought the forum members here might like. Here's a link: http://www.scotlandontv.tv/?channel=Cultur...pid=1380_SMG895

Enjoy!

Did anyone see this a little while back? I've just watched it recently .. is it me or Emma the female verision of Dan Radcliffe through and through lol? And Rupert is becoming Mr. Cool, in a nice way of course lol.

Here it is for those who didn't catch it: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=tQH3vAbDBwY

And she gives a shout-out to Oxfordshire, lovely! I'm always surprised at how much the English accent stands out among our American friends lol. Anyway, there it is for those who didn't catch it and for those who did, enjoy it? Take care.
potterwatch07
What a neat video. I have always wanted to visit Scotland. What beautiful scenery. I know my son would love to take that train. He loves trains and he loves HP, so that would be a double pleasure for him. Perhaps one day when I am wealthy we can take a trip to Scotland and ride the train to the castle. That looks like so much fun. Thanks so much for posting that video. I will have to show my son.
Lily_Potter
That was a great vid. Thanks for posting! I have always heard that Scotland was beautiful and that the castles there were amazing to see. Now with the hogwarts express being there i have another reason to go. laugh.gif Its great too that its not just a train ride but a tour as well complete with lunch. It would be an amazing experience to check it out.
Lily_Potter
Thanks for posting! It was funny when David Letterman was like "we do that on fourth and long" Emma's face was like huh uh ok ya sure i am just going to laugh even though i dont know what your talking about. lol. And its not just the accent killian its also because the choice of words that the English use when speaking like i remember Dan saying something like he had developed a "clever ruse" to fool the paparazzi. An American would have probably said "I developed a scam or stunt to trick the paparazzi." Its a different way of speaking which i just love. No one uses the word ruse anymore or clever for that matter. I have to move to England.biggrin.gif

I've heared about it, it's pretty expensive, a trip with the train. But it must be really cool!

Yesterday I saw an ad for Ace of Cakes. It had Harry Potter-ish music, and I knew something was up. Mary-Alice calls Duff 'Dumbledork' and they show a great big Hogwarts cake breifely, and then Rupert's reaction and Daniel's.

Twenty-six episodes were ordered for the show's third "cycle", which will be split into two seasons. Season three began its run July 2007, and season four will premiere in January 2008 and feature the cake made for the Warner Bros. world premiere of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

hahaha lol a harry potter cake! xP I'm too lazy to watch [shutup.gif] but is it a nice cake?

Mod Edit: As previously notified, one liner and short posts like your are not allowed on the forums. Please elaborate in future posts and check out the rules, Thanks

It seems to be, but they only showed it briefly. It's a huge, really nicely done, Howarts cake. Not the landscape, from what I saw, but just the castle. Guess we'll have to see when the season starts. Not sure when the episode is being aired.
Nasuada
My sister told me when I got home the other night. She had been watching and said that the cake looked like hogwarts castle and that Daniel Radcliffe was on quickly. I'll have to watch the video. I was so bummed that I missed it. Thanks! biggrin.gif

I was thinking about this last night when what should come on the TV, but this very commercial!

I've seen one or two episodes of Ace of Cakes, and I found this commercial incredibly ammusing! They poked a bit of fun at Harry Potter, but it was quite funny. When the main guy (I think his name is Duff?) brings the cake to wherever the cake goes to, I think it's a premiere party, that's when you see just a tiny bit of Dan and Rubert.

He brings the cake in and walks up to Dan and says something along the lines of "Do you like your cake?" And Dan just stands there for a minute with his mouth wide open and then says "Yeah!!!!" It made me laugh really hard because Dan looked so funny! Rubert is standing in the background the entire time just looking at the cake,

The cake looks really neat too, the little bit I saw of it, it sort of looked like the castle from SS/CoS. It was very cool though, wish I could have eaten it! rolleyes.gif

I think I might want to watch this (must find out it's air time though!), I mean, Harry Potter and delicious desserts? What could go wrong with that! tongue.gif
MissRandom
There are two different versions of the ad.

There's the longer one that starts out normal and then they show Anna turning into a cat and Geof into a dog. Then they talk about 'powers'. Geof is hilarious in general, and he lets it show; "My power is to...stop conversations short." laugh.gif THIS is the ad with Rupert in it. Right after the cake they show Rupert looking at it with a big grin and then they show the Dan scene. In the shorter version it's got the music, Mary Anne calling Duff 'Dumbledork', showing the cake quickly, and then Dan's reaction as Duff talks to him.

And yes, the cake IS Hogwarts and it WAS made for the Order of the Phoenix premire last year.
fresh-pickled toad
Wow i can't wait for this episode to come up on the food network. i found out by listening to PotterCast... It sounds very interesting and fun to watch. I was wondering if anyone can put up a link to a commercial for it. smile.gif

Jim Dale, who reads the HP Audiobooks for the market outside the UK, has been awarded a Grammy for the Best Spoken Audiobook for Children. The award was for Deathly Hallows. Here is a link to Jims site, where it lists all the other awards given to him for reading the HP books.

Congratulations to Jim on this great achievement. I have never heard Jim's version of the audiobooks, so I trust the judgement of others who say he is good. I only remember Jim for his early film appearences in the 'Carry On' series, which to be frank were pretty awful. Of course that wasn't his fault, it was the comedy at the time...a bit cringe making!

In the UK Stephen Fry is better known for the audio books. He has a wonderfully droll manner about his delivery and I love it.

Who's your favourite? Are you like me, having only heard one of the readers?
Professor Nutbutter
I hear PS with Jim Dale first, but then I heard Fry on PoA ... well, Fry is definitely my favourite biggrin.gif

Congraduations to him! Stephen Fry is a legend, he should be honoured as highly in my opinion. His life story is fasinating, his own books are genius, his acting is superb and his reading of the Harry Potter books is brilliant. And his Twinnings tea adverts are top notch to! lol. Always good to see a Harry Potter-related person get recognised.

The set I am referring to is the one in the picture on this site next to the article on HP addiction. It looks very nice and I was wondering if anyone has any info on it. Like where to purchase, or just anything as I have been searching online retailers for two hours and cannot find anything on it.

Please help. If that set is as good as it looks, I really need to have it.
etphonehome
I take it that you mean this box set?

Well I tried trawling the internet looking at all the hardback boxset images and came up empty handed I'm afraid.

I'll leave this thread up for now, but in the meantime have you tried contacting a person linked to that part of the site. In the drop down menu headed 'Site' there is a heading 'Contact Us'. Someone there might be abloe to tell you.

Good Luck!
browneyedgirl
so i was reading the newspaper today, and i read that there was a death threat towards daniel radcliffe. so apparently now he has to go around with all these bodyguards all over the place.

did anyone else hear of this?

Hi there,

This thread would be much better suited in the News Discussion area. So that is where it is being relocated to.

Continue on.

TLC just reported that Warner Bros. has refuted this rumor, and said that Radcliffe never recieved a death threat.

I hadn't heard about this at all until it was refuted. As I said there, I am glad that it has proven to be false, but since the rumor originated in a tabloid it probably never was to be taken seriously anyway. If we were to believe everything tabloids said then all the Hollywood movie stars would be married to each other.

Here's TLC's article.
Nymphadora Lupin
I don't believe a word of that (plus the fact that the statement has been retracted) so I wouldn't worry about something like this. Celebs gets death threats all the time! It doesn't mean owt - just some jealous people sending letters to famous people that aren't even true. I can't see someone actually physically killing Dan. People just to this for the crack.

Anyway, you should feel more sorry for those who get many more than one death threat. One is measley. When Eduardo da Silva got his leg dislocated in the Arsenal V Birmingham match, it has caused him to be sidelined for 9 months. Martin Taylor, the bloke who did the challenge, has been getting none-stop death-threats since then, and it was almost a fortnight ago. He doesn't walk around with guards breathing down his neck. And he isn't dead.

I think bodyguards following Dan around because he's had one death threat is proper over the top. Death threats are just sent by people who don't have lives so they have to nick into someone else's. I wouldn't worry about it, and the bodyguards certainly aren't necessary.

Well, that's what I think.

Mod Note: Almost daily, we have trivial news stories appear in the press or on the internet about Harry Potter, filming news, the actors and their lives, people associated with the actors and awards shows. Although some of these stories are highly important and justify having their own threads, most are just one off stories that may only get commented on by one or two members and only for a day or so. Because of this we have decided to open this thread where all day to day news in the HP verse can be posted.

A few of the older stories have been merged together so you get the idea of what should be in here. If in doubt please contact any member of staff who will be happy to help you. Thanks.

The latest story I have found is that Emma Watson is to attend the Empire Awards ceremony on Sunday. More can be read here on her official wesite.

A trial date has been set for the WB?JKR vs RDR books case in which WB and JKR are attempting to stop publication of an unauthorised encyclopedia of Harry Potter.

The date and location of the trial has been set as 24.25 and 26th March at the United States Court House in Manhattan.

Since this case is high profile and on going, there may be need for this to have it's own thread should interest deem it so.

The Lost Marauder
I read an artical in The Sun newspaper which stated that daniel radcliffe is getting through 20 cigarettes a day, and a picture of him smoking also came with this, that lead me to believe this is true, but i hadn't heard anything about him smoking before and just wondered if other Harry potter, and daniel radcliffe fans knew about this.

The article read that the other cast member of harry potter were worried for his health, Rupert Grint in particur has been telling him about the dangers of smoking, and apparently every time he's off set, he light up a ciggy

I just wanted some resurance that this is true, and to hear your views on daniel radcliffe smoking, and your views smoking aswell.

I myself don't really like the idea of smoking and hope that I wont start up either, since I swore to myself that i would never get addicted to anything else since Harry Potter.
harry_potter_luvr_4life
I heard about him smoking in Equess (doubt it's spelled right) but maybe he became addicted to it from that. If it is true then I'm not going to be able to stand to look at pictures of him or him in the movies. I'll look it up on the internet. Although on here they have pics from HBP set and he isn't smoking in any of them. It is shocking what some people will do. Even for Daniel I wouldn't smoke. The celebrities need to think about the people that look up to them.
Magelirose
Sorry, but the Sun newspaper is a notorious rag - rarely does it print anything that's actually true, and if it does, it grossly exaggerates it.

So, if Dan does smoke, it is unlikely to be 20 a day.

Seriously - whenever you're tempted to believe anything printed in the Sun - look the other way. rolleyes.gif
Jilly bean
Having not seen the article I don't know if this is true of have any reason to believe it...
However, as awful as it sounds, It really wouldn't surprise me, there have been quite a few celebrities that have gone down this road, think about it...he's Harry Potter, probably the most famous under 21 year old in the world. Also, if you look at it there have been a few stories that have cropped up that are simaler to this (ie. the story about him making out with another guy), I believe that if this is true then well he's basically another one of those drug addicted celebs like Brittaney Spears, I would hate to believe that it was true, and like harry_potter_luvr_4life said he needs to think of all the fans that look up to him
