Ok, I've been thinking this over Star Trek has "Trekkies" right? Well, what does Harry Potter have "Potties" or "Harryites" or something? So I've basically started this to find out what everyone thinks on the issue. List what you think Harry Potter Fans should be called, and we'll see which one we like best.
Come up with some great ideas and post as soon as you can. Try and make it something smart yet zanny. Post your ideas.
Happy posting,

i dunno
they could be harries which are the people who are obsesed with him but people who just like him can be called harry fans
What about people who love Hermione, Hermionites?

Dec 8 2005, 05:37 AM
Hmm, I guess, but it's not towards the character Harry himself but towards the entire series of books.
We'll have to wait and see for other peopl eto post their reply.

So far the most common moniker for us that I've heard is "Pottheads."
Not very flattering, but there it is. It would be nice to have a nicer name though!
dragontamer
Dec 8 2005, 08:41 AM
Haha yeah. You can say I'm a "Trekkie" and no one will mind, but if you say "I'm a Pothead" people are gonna start backing away from you

. That's why I'm determined to come up with a new name for us Harry Potter Fans.
Must think...

Dec 8 2005, 02:58 PM
Hahaha, Pottheads

I really liked that name! Though, I guess dragontamer is right... But I don't care what people think of me, and I don't care if they think I'm crazy

And the reason why I can say that I'm a Potthead, is because I
am

lol, Pottheads!

the only thing i discovered is "lol, pottheads"
ok. i know, i can be really clever when i try to.
no, seriously, Pottheads is funny, though not very nice. we should really come up with something or we'll just have to stay at "harry potter fans".

oooohhh....
dragontamer, a very, very good question.
To be honest I have no idea... but I agree, we need to think of a very good name for us potter fans!
We have a name in Spanish: pottermaniacos
which would be the same in English... pottermaniacs
But that would scare people as well... lol!
aargh! people! come here to help us think of a good name!!
Caoo
Dec 8 2005, 05:49 PM
Think, think,
think! We need a name, and quite fast. Yeah, I think Pottermaniacs will cause as much "trouble" as Pottheads, but it's a good name!
I'll try to think of something, and I'll post it here if I do

Simple --- we're Dumbledore's Army. That works, doesn't it? Sure sounds like the best choice to me.
Of course, I suppose that excludes fans of old Voldie...

Wow, these are all really good suggestions, though we should see what we all like. Keep posting ideas and we'll see wish one we like best

. Hahaha, I liked Potterinos, Dumbledore's Army would be good, but as Agent0042 said, it'll take out Voldy fans, and we'll want to target the entire Potter series. Hmmm, so difficult

.
Try and find some more ideas, we could be called the "Potties" though then it's kinda the same situation as "Pottheads"

Ooooh...cool thread!
I usually call myself a Potterhead, although I have heard the terms Pottheads, Pottermaniacs (one of my favorites), HPers, and the traditional (yet oddly original) "Freaks"

....yep, thats my sister's name for it anyway...lol
I have also heard during the times of the releases of the books and movies, witha ll of the hype, the term "Pottermania." It reminds me so much of when the Beatles "ruled the world" with Beatlemania, and when Pokemon ruled the world (haha, don't you remember Pokemon!?) with Pokemania.......POTTERMANIA!!! *loud noises and applaud*

While others are more kindly and think that he's sad
But Peevsy knows better and says that he's mad!
I too have heard the term Pottermaniacs used quite often.
Glad to hear people like the Dumbledore's Army idea. I guess individual fans would be referred to DA members? Or soldiers / infantrymen/women?
Of course, there's still the whole Voldy issue, unless we wanted to create a separate group, the Death Eaters...

Dec 9 2005, 03:35 PM
I generally run the gammit of "Potter fans/freaks" when refering to Harry Potter fanatics en masse ("fanboy"/"fangirl" in the singular), as "Potterheads" or any like derivations from that or "Potterholics" seem to carry the drug connentation. Which I suppose is actually kind of accurate, considering most Potter fans are pretty much addicted to Harry Potter. I have heard the term "HP freak" before and am probably guilty of using it at least once.
I don't think we'll get past the drug connontation. It's too, too easy. Then again, while I appreciate Jimmy Buffet's enthusiasm, not being having a similar name to people that wear parrots on their heads with fair regularity by choice...I'm okay with that. Parrots (the animal) scare the bejeezus out of me.
lutsija
Dec 9 2005, 03:43 PM
DA is very good idea, but what about people who don't read the books? are we talking about name which we would use or these people? cause i think they wouldn't have a clue about what Dumbledor's Army is.
Caoo
Dec 9 2005, 04:11 PM
Well, the DA is good, but I don't think it fits with us, I mean, it's more the DA in the books, erm... quite hard to explain! But it doesn't really tell that we are Pottermaniacs, does it? I think we need a name not embarrassing us, not making othet to think we're crazy, which people understand... I'm asking for something unattainable, right?
Hugs, caoo

Dec 9 2005, 09:24 PM
Well, I initially liked the Dumbledore's Army idea too, but then again as you say, what about Voldy's fan's?
So, I thought (big surprise there) maybe we could replace Dumpledore with something else, like:
Potter's Army
Wizard's Army
Witch's Army
etc.....
And then I thought (this is getting scary now), maybe we could just choose whichever one of the character's names and just put it in front of Army, to show who we support in the series.
So someone could be part of Dumbledore's Army, another of Voldemort's Army, and another of Fudge's Army, and what ever else you like!
But then again, we kind of wouldn't be a 'whole' as a group, just united by the 'Army' bit. But still, if anyone likes this idea...
*Padfoot*
Caoo
Dec 9 2005, 09:39 PM
Yeah, I like that idea

Luna's Army... It works. But as you said, it's better to be a whole group. Something
everyone who likes Harry Potter can be called. I still don't know something yet, though
Haha, ParryHotters is a cool name

But I don't think that will work either... I know I sound impossible now, but we need a proper name, don't you think?!

Hmm, interesting topic. I have to admit, that I have no idea. I like trying to come up with one though. Well, I've heard Pottheads before, I honetly, I don't take that to any offense.
The one that I mainly call myself is 'HP dork', which comes from the term 'Band dork', because I'm both. I don't' really know about Pottermaniacs.
Xkidrogue gave me the idea to use J.K. in the name. So, maybe something like J.K.R.'s Followers OR J.K.R.'s Army?
It doesn't point to one group in particular. It can involve both supportors of Dumbledore and Voldemort, and everyone in between because J.K. was the one who made them all up..
What do you think of this one?

Wah, good question!
In Quebec, we're fans of a TV show: Dans une Galaxie près de chez vous* and we're called Duggies, for D-U-G (Dans une Galaxie)
But I don't like Potties, nor Pottheads...
And I don't have any idea

I like "Dumbledore's Army," but like others have mentioned, my one reservation is that people beyond the fandom won't have a clue what we're talking about. "Potter's Army" would be better in the sense that people would probably figure we mean "Harry Potter," but they wouldn't know where the "Army" part came from. They might get the wrong idea and think we're, I don't know, militiant or something! "Potter's Army encourages a violent active stance against those who do not worship the ground J.K. Rowling walks on."

I've heard "Potheads," and actually used the term once -- the person with whom I used the term looked at me like I had two heads and started backing off immediately. It took me a few minutes to register why I had alarmed her so much... I'm many things, but a drug user ain't one of them...

I continue to like "Pottermaniacs" because it's relatively "neutral" (ie. no drug references

) and I really think it's a fairly accurate descriptor. Be proud of your Potterism, my friends! Just admit that you're a maniac... you wouldn't be passing your night on VTM if you weren't!

This is turning out to be one pickle of a question

. Hmm I'm still not sure about the DA, though I am a fan of Pottermaniacs ... it just has that certain ring to it. It rolls off the tip of your tongue

!
I think it would be good to keep it that we target the whole Potter series, not just a certain bit in the book. Though I did like Padfoot12's idea, it was really smart ...
Hmmm ... we'll come up with something soon

Dec 10 2005, 10:23 AM

lol i agree with Allie- I would not liked to be called a pothead, no matter how much i loved Harry Potter especially in my catholic school

! And the first time i came accross it, I read it as poth-ead, like with a th sound...not cool it sounds weird actually.
Pottermaniacs are probably our best bet.
let me try all the possibilities:
Potheads- see above
Potties- toilet training....erm...i dont think so!
Potholes- dum i know but everyone in my class calls me that
Parryhotters- this ones ok...sounds bit like a band of some sort
Harryites- um...bit lame
Potter's army etc- could work
The list is endless(ok fine i'm a teensy bit bored

) but why are most of them dum or rude?
Come on guys we need a name!
Hey i just thought of one: The International Bretheren of Potter Fans- The IBPF.....or Potter's Patients(because you know we're all so obsessed and probably need to see psychiatrists!)
yeah i'd better end this post or i'll probably go on forever
dragontamer
Dec 10 2005, 12:18 PM
I like what I_LOVE_RON had about the whole abbreviation thing. What we could do is get a bunch of words and form them to say a word from Harry Potter.
Umm, something like I_LOVE_RON's International Bretheren of Potter Fans, but something that will spell out a Harry related word. Kind of like Hermione's S.P.E.W (even though she didn't mean for it to turn out that way

).

hmm good question...yet challenging....
i'm just thinking...Harry's good in DADA, so why cant we name ourselves after a spell?
Expecto Patronus can be changed to Potter Patronus or something like that....
you guys name it, there are lots of interesting spells out there (well actually not out there) like probably Potterriarmus, Potterium Leviosa or even some of the Dark Arts, Potterio the Imperius Curse (you know he cast Imperio on ALL of us!!) or even the death spell, Pottera Kedavra. (sounds kinda stupid eh? but hey that's all the idea i've got now)
cheers

It's all good, it really is. I liked Potterists, but it sounds a bit weird... And that goes for the spell-thingy too...

Great thinking!

Oh my! this thread is becoming very popular!
Well I have to say that I still like the pottermaniacs, but as I said before, some of you might find it rather embarrasing...
parryhotter is funny but I am not really sure about it...
potterists reminds me of ghosts.. I don't understand why, though. Maybe I'm just mad.
hogwartsians is kinda of ... weird, but as you said, we are weird...
potterinos sounds to me like something taken from "The Godfather", you know the movie... sounds italian... doesn't it?
potterholics made me laugh... people would really think we are insane if we use that name. I liked it though...
Unfortunately I have no more suggestions, but I will think of one soon... or I'll try to.
Ah yes! and ISEOPF sounds cool althought I don't think that would really help. It is original, but people wouldn't know what does it mean. We would have to spend our life explaining what ISEOPF stands for.
As I understood, we are here to find a name for us Harry Potter freaks, I mean, fans.
We need something that, whenever and wherever said, makes people think of us, the fans of HP. And we need it to be nice and not offensive.
Wow that's a big challenge!
I still like pottermaniacs...

Okay, I think the idea of "I.S.E.O.P.F." (International Society of Obsessed Potter Fans came over pretty well, except the pronunciation seemed a bit awkward. I agreed with the majority, and thought of a we new names:
M.I.S.O.P.- "Muggle's International Society of Obsessed Pottermaniacs"...same idea as ISEOPF, but much easier to pronounce in my opinion.
P.O.T.T.E.R.S.- "Potter-Obsessed To Towering Extents Regal Society"....wow! That was a good one! We are little 'Potters', arent we! And the name really shows who we are! Obsessed to Towering Extents! Regal Society means it is grand and important! I think its perfect!
So, what do you think? Go ahead and comment!

I do not really think that E.L.F. will work, dragontamer, only because if we go around telling people we are Elves, they will think we are crazy...
At least POTTERS signifies that we are Harry Potter fanatics! lol...
