If you were allowed at Hogwarts (but not as a student) -- what would you want to be? For me, it's a toss-up between being a ghost or a student's pet. Either way, I'd be able to prowl the castle, although being a pet would have the added advantage of not having to be dead.

Please post anything else that you might think of, or post why you would want to be any of the afore-mentioned items/beings!

yeah id love to be a ghost or maybe a poltergiest too but it would be fun to be a pet say an owl and fly everywhere and deliver messages, i would choose all of them.

A ghost would be kind of cool too, but then I'd have to be dead, and death is my worst fear. On the contrary, then I wouldn't have anything to fear anymore, having already faced it.

But an owl is still better, provided that I can snoop into the notes and see what they say.

lol that is very confusing, but funny. yeah i would like to be a ghost but not forever. maybe a few years but not for ever. it would be fun to be something for students to cast spells on but only for lets say a few days. it would be funny be levitated and stuff and flying across a classroom.

I would probably pick for something that's "alive" so my decision lies between: ghost or pet. If I would be a pet, than it would be an owl like Hedwig (not a toad like Trevor!). A ghost would also be cool, you can speak with everyone but you're a ghost forever, and I wouldn't like that. I guess I'll vote for "pet"

I would love to be a pet. Mainly, I would be a cat or an owl. They can have adventures and experience Hogwarts just like the students without any homework!

I voted for House Elf to hastily, because now I realise that I would definitely prefer to be a cat and just laze around doing whatever I fancied, and most of all sleep. Then I could go anywhere in the castle and explore it at my leisure.

Whereas my instinct told me house elf because they go everywhere without being seen and the house elves in Hogwarts are treated better than anywhere else. However I now think that was a silly choice because I would have to clean and cook ALL the time and that's just not me!

moo dont forget house elves are magical and they could probably make the cleaning up do itself by magic. and anyway you would enjoy cleaning if you were a houself

Hahahaha. But seriously. It would be great, wouldn't it? No, but being serious, I'm thinking maybe a portrait. Because I could talk and move, of course, and travel the castle. And I can eat food depicted in different paintings since, as you know, ghosts (no matter how cool it would be) can't eat. Or breathe. Scary feeling.

Or perhaps a student's pet? Hmmm... I'm gonna have to think about this. But I still like the idea of being a broomstick.

Certainly a pet but not any pet; a cat. So I can sleep whenever I want, eat whatever I want and listen to all the conversations. It's really interesting. I can communicate at least, not like an object and no one really "use" me like the owls. I'll be loved not like a portrait. I won't serve anyone like a house-elf. No one will sit on me (broomsticks ). And I won't be eternal (ghosts) . Oh and it's really a beautiful animal.

I wouldn't mind being a ghost cos then if I am prowling the floors at night and filch is around,I would easily slip through a wall so I didn't get into trouble! Closely following a ghost would be a students pet,maybe an owl or something!

I think a portrait would be neat because I'd still be able to be myself and I'd be able to help out in some way if needed.

I wouldn't want to be anything else because there's chances I'd be basically tortured. Being a students pet would probably not be fun because it would depend on the student, being some guinea pig is certainly not fun so I don't like the idea of any of that.

I would be a house elf, you get to use magic, you have the freedom of the castle and you're pretty well treated. They always seem to be happy, and I don't mind cooking and cleaning. Yu could also get paid if you wanted. It would, I think, be closer to being human that a pet, and I would hate to be a ghost, making friends then watching them die too soon, remembering your real life, unable to eat or drink or touch anything, stuck like that forever.... makes me think of being buried alive somehow.

Hmm, good points, Serafina. It made me rethink my choice of becoming a ghost. I never really thought about it as being buried alive because I'm personally terrified of death, so I guess I viewed becoming a ghost as a "quick fix" - Nearly Headless Nick's warning notwithstanding.

I'm also re-thinking my second choice of becoming a pet -- I would hate not being able to talk! Unless I were a pet acromantula. I think I'm crossing over to "portrait."

I's have to say a snitch - I would love to be able to claim that its because I'm a golden treasure that everyone wants to catch,

but no...its because I'm small, very flighty (and fidgety) and I'm pretty sure that with increasing age I'm getting rounder .

I picked being a students pet. I wouldn't want to be a ghost becaue when I die I would want to move on. I would definitely not want to be practiced on! I would still be praticed on in transfiguration though.

Definetely a house-elf, but I'd be like Dobby and wear clothes. And I would probobly want to work in the kitchen.

I did vote portrait hoping that I would be in Snape's bedroom but then being a ghost would be even better so I could follow him too and there would be nothing he could do about it

I think a ghost would be fun, all the students would see you. You'd get to see how they grew up, and you'd get to roam the halls where ever you wanted to.

I'd like to be a portrait becuase you could pick up all of the rumors gonig around (yes i know, thats horrable!) you could go any where you wanted too, and if you were a really important dude when you were alive, you would have a portriat in another location as well...you could also have friends and be a practice guy for students to practice spells on!

i guess i would be a portrait. there are soo many of them at hogwarts though and it could get boring. but some of it it might be fun.

you could make fun of passer-byes and vist the other portraits. i dont think i would want to be a ghost, im not afraid of death and I dont think I would like people asking me how I died and walking right through me. But portraits can still spy, probably easier then ghosts can. I mean, it would be werid to see the blody baron in the gryffindor common room.

I really have no clue as to what i could actually be at Hogwarts if i weren't a student.So i just chose my answer based on what i would want to be.I would want to be a Broomstick.I love Quidditch and i think it would be awesome to be a broomstick you are free and don't really have anything to worry about.No worries and Freedom sound good to me.

i think that being a ghost out of that selection would be the best, because you could still travel anywhere you wanted to in the castle, and communicate with the teachers and students, and you could play pranks on the students. it would be a lot of fun.

I'd be a ghost. I considered being a pet, too, but pets are merely pets... Except owls and Crookshanks, most of them aren't that intelligent. Ghosts can move around (float around, anyway), speak... too bad they can't eat, but other than that, it's almost the same thing as being a human.

It took me a while to think but I am now sure that I would want to be a ghost.I really hate death and I would love it if I could come back and "live" as a ghost.
