Why was Ginny Weasley the first to close the music box in OotP (ch The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black)? Sirius, Mrs. Weasley, Harry, Ron, Fred and George were all present, but Ginny was the one who "has the sense to slam the lid shut...." This music box was making the whole lot "curiously weak and sleepy." Why/How can Ginny be so powerful in mind? Why didn't someone with more experience have more sense? This passage is passed without little to no importance given to the event. It is in the context of cleaning the acient house of Black of the dark arts. What do you think?

Grr... repost
Maybe Ginny, after her awful experience with Thomas in the Chamber of Secrets, took some sort of lessons with Albus in order to prevent further harm to her.
This would have caused her to gain a certain amount of mental stability in situations like this that others do not have.

How do we know that Voldemort's name was Thomas?

Yeh good point Mahwish! And i think that if ginny was having private lessons with DD then she would have told HP, or some one.

Maybe. Or she didn't have lessons from DD or perhaps Ginny just developed a kind of 6th sense thing that her encounter with TMR helped her to realize. What I'm trying to say is that maybe Ginny has a good sense of danger now...

That could be it. Hopefully we'll find out more about Ginny in the next book.

We don't know if she did but we are trying to come up with an explanation for her closing the music box. A sixth sense seems highly likely but we are only guessing.

Thomas = Tom Riddle. And I think you have a point, Matthew. She may have even taken Occlumency lessons.

I think it was DUMBLEDORE who taught her rather than SNAPE!!

Well since no one knows if she's been taught ther's no need worrying about who did it. I don't think snape would and DD's too busy.

I don't know about any occulmency lessons, but i think ginny will rise in prominence in the upcoming books. well, she already has, going with them to the department of mysteries and all. I think they've found that she's made of sterner stuff.
P.S. who here is a supporter of ginny/harry romance?

The most likely option is that she was just the first one to come to her senses. Rowling doesn't make everything in her books little hints of things, that would be much too difficult.
Maybe you are right, but I think that it was just a little detail to make the house seem dangerous.

I agree that it is probably important that she was the one to close the lid. Through the GoF and OotP, it has become apparent that there is more to Ginny than meets the eye . Some things we have discovered about her;
* She 'borrowed' her brothers brooms from the age of 6 (of which they had no idea)
* She has shown strength of character when she pointed out matter-of-factly to Harry that
she was the one who could tell him if he was being possessed by Voldemort or not and
* She also insisted on going to the DoM with the others in the face of great peril
Ther's probably more indicators that Ginny is more than what she first appeared to be.

i think that in COS ginny just became more powerful mentally because of her bad experience with tom riddle and the diary i think these things just made her more powerful mentally

i agree with hedwig on the 6th sense thing. after an encounter like that in the camber she must be on her guard even more.

I also think that Ginny now recognices better than the other when something is messing with her brain and therefor had the sence to slam the lid shut.
I also think that JKR is building up to that Ginny is more powerful than we think.

Ginny has aways been a charachter however, with a lot of common sense. She is frank, and sticks to the facts. I could see her even without occlumency lessons, being the least affected by the music box. I do think that the experience with TMV and the diary also helped her to become stronger and more solid mentally.

People are always saying that they learn from their mistakes! I assume that Ginny has learned her lesson and that she is more on the look out for stuff that can mess with her head. It doesn't necessarily say she wasn't affected only that she was the first to react and close the box. I am sure she is very gifted mentally and that is why I am so upset we weren't told what her OWL's scores were!

I remember reading that Ginny was studying for the OWL's, but did she ever take them? Is this canon? Or do we have to assume that
after the war the Hogwarts students went back to taking their OWL's. I suppose it's a pre-requisite for graduation.
As for Ginny closing the music box - could it be as simple as
SHE WAS THE ONE CLOSEST TO IT?!

Haha yeah possibly! Yeah, I think that there isn't really any significance in her being the one to close it, but looking over some old posts in this thread it seems that some people were saying that she may have gotten more stronger mentally after the experience with Riddle's diary, and I think they may have a point. After such a traumatic experience she probably found a way to make sure she never let anything control her like that again. But I don't think that she would have gotten lessons from Dumbledore or anyone, I just think she did it herself.

I highly doubt that she had Occlumency lessons with Dumbledore. I think that Rowling is slowly starting to show us how powerful Ginny is and that she can handle Harry and his experiences. Now that Ginny is more comfortable around Harry, we are starting to see what a great witch she is... and so is Harry.

I think Ginni having had the awful experience of being under an imperious curse, and nearly losing her life, has developed a hightened sense of danger of being lulled into a stupor. This music box seems to be up to no good!
