What does Crookshanks actually do? I know that Hedwig delivers letters and sends them off and such, but what about the other animals? I don't really remember Scabbers doing anything either, aside from having spells done on him.

Crookshanks was just Hermione's pet. That's it. He did befriend Sirius in Prisoner of Azkaban. I know that he was part of the whole discovering Pettigrew thing. Maybe he really isn't a cat at all...
Or maybe he's just a really smart one.

Crookshanks definitely knew something was "wrong" with Scabbers--it's why he kept going after him.

In Scabber's favor, he bit Goyle on the first train ride to Hogwarts, when Malfoy and the goons threatened Ron.

But yeah, they were mostly just ordinary pets. I kinda see owls as being more like horses--horses can be pets, but you can ride them, too. Owls are pets, but they can deliver your mail, too. It's probably why they are the most popular pet in the wizarding world.

Crookshanks is actually part-Kneazle. Kneazels are described as being highly intelligent (which Sirius comments upon in PoA) and able to detect less than savoury characters to which they will react badly to (hence his reaction to Peter Pettigrew even in Scabbers form.) However, they are supposed to make excellent pets if they do form an attatchment to the wizard.

I also seem to recall reading, somewhere, that Mrs Figg's cats are also part Kneazle (I can't remember where though) which would suggest that she uses them to assist in her work as a member of the Order of the Phoenix to watch over Harry.

Here's a potentially more fascinating question --- does Hermione know that Crookshanks is part-kneazle? Considering how clever she is, I would think that she at least suspects.

yeah, well crookshanks was only just a pet. owls can be handy that's why hagrid bought harry an owl but girls (just like me) are obsessed with cats so they usually buy them.
crookshanks on the other hand, did come in handy after all. he was a help in prisoner of azkaban and really intelligent too but he was only a pet and didn't have any job to do.

That is something that is unlikely to happen. JKR has stated, outright, that Crookshanks is a Cat/Kneazle hybrid - nothing more, nothing less.

I was just on JKR's website... and she was talking about a rumor about crookshanks being an animagus... she said "No he isnt, but he's not pure cat either" and then said if you look in "Fantastic Beast's and Where To Find Them" you mihgt be able to figure out what he is... well I own FB but I cant find my copy of it (and I'm very madd).

But does anyone know what crookshanks is... If I find my copy. i'm gonna search for it, but I hope you'll assist me in it...

JKR said Crookshanks is a half-Kneazle, and in PoA, we always see him trying to catch Scabbers (of course he is a half cat going after a mouse) but I think it says that he was unusually persistant on this bussiness too.

He befriended Sirius too, and Sirius's animagus was a dog, so, there's got to be something interesting on that matter. I think he always knew Scabbers/Petter were no friends with them.
