ive noticed in gof that everything was squished. will the length be longer for ootp or will it be squished badly this time?

Mod Edit: I have merged the topics 'Length of OotP' and 'How Long D'you Think OotP Will Be?'.
james pickles
yeah i have considered this because Ootp is massive so either the film is going to be squished or it is either going to be very long.

Very few movies have gone over 3 hours. A lot of them are excellent movies. Schindler's List, and The Longest Day come to mind, as well as many of the old time movies based on the Bible. The HP movies have been somewhere between 2 1/2 to 3 hours, and I believe OotP movie will be the same length as the others. I'm sure, that because of time constraints, a lot of scenes in the OotP novel will be cut or not filmed at all. I'm more than sure that the fight seen at the DOM will be included. Despite the fact that OotP is, to date, the thickest book, I doubt the movie will go over 3 hours. Just my opinion of course! wink.gif
james pickles
yeah i have to agree with you there. it is very rare movies go over three hours. so yeah all of the little things will be cut off. the hogs head meeting might be cut off. seamus and harry fighting will be cut. things like that.
priori_incantatem
Yeah. A lot of things are not needed. I think OotP will be about as long as GoF, but I sometimes wish the movies were longer. Am I the only one? sad.gif
marire
I'd like that they would make two movies, 'cause otherwise it will be badly squished. I allready almost lost my mind in GoF when they had made so short scenes of every part and cut so many things away. But if they make only one movie, I hope it's at least 3 hours. I think they can't possible make it any shorter or it has good chances to spoil the whole book in cuttings and short scenes
zviper
All Lord of the Rings movies has been 3 hours or more. The last one, the Return of the King was actually 3 hours and 20 minutes.

lol no your not the only one. i wish it was longer. perhaps a few more hours tongue.gif yeah i do with the movies will be as long as the books.
Sofie
I think they should make a 3hours movie.I dont really understand why did they made gof 2,5 hours long. Its PG13 anyways so it doesnt really matter if it was 3 hours long. unsure.gif

Not to mention that people will watch it whatever happens. Its Harry Potter.
Nimbus
Even though OotP is a longer book, the movie wont be as badly condensed, because OotP has a much more linear plot than GoF. GoF's plot and subplots all were really ingermingled in the book but OotP is much more straight forward.
Just the Droobles
The difference between GoF and OotP is that OotP has a lot more drama and conversation. GoF was all special effects and tournament tasks. Having mostly conversation should make it easier to film for one, and perhaps they won't need to add in five minutes on any particular scene because really their whole script is already written for them.

What I don't get is if they can make Titanic, Lord of the Rings, and King Kong three hours long, why can't they do that for Harry Potter? Our audience is much older now because a lot of them have grown up with Harry. Yeah there are still a few youngins out there, but they obviously have a long attention span because they have the patience to read the Harry Potter books.

Frankly at this point in the series, you can't leave out much. Everything is so crucial to the ending. And if the producers don't make it right, it could screw up the next two movies.

I also think they won't do two movies for one book because the actors are growing up and they are already over their limit on age. Tom Felton is going to be four years older than Draco. Yes, people in movies play people way younger than what they are, but there is a significant difference between a 20 yr old and a 15 yr old. Thankfully though, I don't think the actors would give their roles to anyone else, and that would anger lots of fans anyway, so hopefully all the actors will stay.

But I think OotP will be an easier film to make than GoF.
PigWithHair
Just the Droobles,

Glad to see you over here!

Yes, I agree that Phoenix should be a lot easier to condense than Goblet was.

In Goblet, as you mentioned, there are all these huge events: Yule Ball, three tasks, two more schools coming in so lots of new characters, Quidditch World Cup.
Very hard to condense all that.

In Phoenix there is some traveling on the part of the characters, but most of it is conversation and information that is easy to condense, so I don't expect Phoenix to be as choppy in the beginning as Goblet was, though I still loved Goblet.

I highly doubt we'll see a three hour movie since we didn't get that with Goblet. The standard 2-1/2 hours is what we'll get I'm sure.

Unfortunately, I don't think they care what they screw up. Look at how much they've screwed up already sad.gif, and changing directors all the time doesn't help.

I wish they'd make OOTP longer. I think all but first two movies were shorter than necessary so far. Both POA and GOF felt rushed in my opinion. They're always cutting too much out. I think leaving out so large chunks of the plot hurts the movies rather than helps.

I don't see how anyone who didn't read GOF could've understood the movie. I think the plot was too chopped up, and unfortunately, I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen again. dry.gif
Just the Droobles
Yeah I think that GoF was very choppy as well. I was unsure after the first time I saw it whether I liked it or not. But I saw it again and It was better the second time around. Of course, it didn't help that I had reread the book the week before it came out, so I had the book fresh in my mind and I had thought how they would play everything out. Oh well.

OotP may be difficult to do because of all the internal thoughts and flashbacks through the pesieve we have to deal with. I don't know if They'll change the portrayal of the pensieve or not but it doesn't look like the graphics were too difficult in GoF.

Midnight, you're right, they have messed some things up. And people who haven't read the books may become confused. I've had to explain to my dad a few things. And all the director switcheroos don't make it easier either. dry.gif
felix_felicis_444
*sigh* I was extremely disappointed with the Goblet of Fire movie and I hope sincerely that they make 2 movies out of the Order of the Phoenix movie.

By doing this, although it may cost a bit more money to film, they will recieve nearly twice as much profit. With a book as long as this, it will be extremely difficult to fit everything into one 2 1/2 hour movie without extremely distorting the plot and displeasing fans.

The OotP is the most exciting, important book as of yet in the HP series, and by ruining it while turning it into a film would be a terrible mistake!

I am one of those who would want OotP to be longer. In GoF they left out soo many parts that I would have wanted to see like S.P.E.W and the Hermione and Rita Skeeter scene. There are a lot of important things happening in OotP so they should either make it like 3 hours or more, make 2 movies (which i would dread the wait), or make it all rushed and cut out like a bunch of things (which would be HORRIBLE).

I love OotP and personally, I'd be sad if they cut it.
silverstag
considering it's the longest book yet,i think they will only put the inportant parts in the movie.and it happens now i have just finished the 5th book 3 times now and i have started to pick up the parts the might put in the movie.now most people have figured out what they want in the movie but if harry and cho don't kiss the response will be unreal, but we still have a long time to wait.now back to the origional question.sorry i side tracked.

well it's the longest book yet and it will proably, hopefully be the longest movie yet.i put my bet's on 2 hrs and a half to 3 hours and a quarter.
hermione_rocks
i hope that it will be around 3 hours... i have a feeling that this movie will be the longest, but i don't know how much longer it will be than the other books.... it would be really strange if any of the previous books had longer movies than OotP since it is the longest book by a lot of pages

the information we have about the movie shows that they are keeping all the important scenes in the book so far... this is a good sign, but we don't really know how long it's actually going to be until a couple months before it's released

even though OotP is not my favorite book (GoF is!) i really want this movie to be better than all the rest... i hope they can follow the trend of the movies getting better each year! i'm really excited for the release of this movie! smile.gif
departed_soul
I think it'll be roughly 3 hours long. They're keeping a lot of important scenes in so far, and many characters that I thought would be cut, which is a good sign to me. With GoF, there was more room to cut subplots and stuff, but with OOTP, some of the subplots are very important.

BTW, I thought it was a bit odd that GoF (the movie) was shorter than both SS and CoS, just by a few minutes.
aizhol
It will be difficult to save all valuable parts. Because they need a lot of time for battle at the end (for example). I think? they just show everything by a little peaces.
NightDance
I don't know how long the OOTP will be, I'm hoping around
three hours. Now that they have gotten past the first three
movies they have reached the PG-13 audience.
Which means the films can gradualy grow in length, now that
the target audience is mostly teens.

I love the films to death but I wish they were longer, they are
too good to be only 2 1/2 hours. smile.gif

But, judging by the length of the OOTP book, I would say
the movie will be longer than the GOF. (I hope.) sad.gif
tuni
I think this film should not be squished, because this film is more interesting than rest of the films,so they should have to show us a complete movie.
missmugglebethany
in all honestly why cant the movie be a 3 and 1/2 hours afterall if im not mistaken wasnt th 3rd Lord of the Rings that long? And even though Harry potter is a "children's "genre at least as a book i know when i was sitting in the theatre for lord of the rings at midnight there were a lot of kids sitting in there. theres no reason why they cant make it 3 and 1/2.
lita_bav
Im hoping for a 4 hour movie with an intermission.

2 movies would be great, but theres nowhere to split the up without leaving the audience feeling empty and dis-satisfied(ie. Dead Mans Chest).

But with a budget of 150 million, niether ideas are really possible.
bluezz
As much as I would like to see OotP with all the details, I don't think they should make two movies out of the book. Actors are getting older and there is already controversy over whether they will be able to act in all 7 films. If they will do two OotP movies, they will probably not be able to act in HBP or the last HP.
However, I really hope the movie will be three hours long or maybe even a little longer. There is a lot of information to be covered, so they'll need all the time they can get.
evanescence
Well, guys, I think that you are right! Who doesn't want a 4 hour Harry Potter film? It was shocking for me when I first watched POA...although it was brilliant as a film, they had cut too many things which was quite disgusting actually...I thought that GOF would be about 170 minutes but....it was only 150 with the end credits!Lol...But I must confess that I feel a big and hilarious Potter film is coming soon. Let's take a look to all the things they have confirmed to film or they have already filmed:
1.Dementors, Mrs Figg
2. Dursleys
3. Advance Guard
4. Grimmauld Place
5.Kreacher
6.The trial
7.Prefects-Hogwarts Express
8. Great Hall
9.Umbridge
10.Trellawney's Lesson
11.Grubbly Plank
12.Detention(I hope so)
13.Hogsmeade(Hog's Head, Valentine's Day)
14.Saint Mungo's
15. Dumbledore's Army
16. Quidditch first match only the expulsion
17. Hagrid
18.Thestrals
19.HArry and Cho's Kiss
20.Christmas at Grimmauld Place
21. Potions Class
22.Occlumency
23.Grawp
24.Trellawney's Sacking
25.Pensieve
26.DA Betray
27. Hagrid's Sacking
28. Twins' ,Mahyem and Exit
29. OWLs
30. Dreams
31. On the fire
32. Umbridge's Office
33.Inquisitorial Squad
34. +Snake's Eye
35.(Surely a scence where McGonagall and Umbridge are having a fight)
36. Centaurs
37.Flight to London
38. DOM
39.Deatheaters
40.The battle
41.Lost Prophesy
and the ending scences

So, I haven't put some other scenes in the list cause they are smaller, only the basic...So, I think that it is going to be about 3 hours and more... biggrin.gif
Lady_L_Black
Hello everyone,

I think if the movie isn't 3 hours or longer i think it'll be very vauge. Which will make me cry on top of Sirius dying. :eeek This movie is my favortie book so i'm a Little nervous. In the last movie they left out all of Sirius's scenes pretty much. I was. lets just say not happy. I hope they don't this time

I'm new to this, but I totally agree! It really sucks that the HP movies are cut so much, I wish they would make it longer even if they had to make them 2 movies I was so upset with all the things they cut in the GOF :( The only reason I think they made is GOF short is so they can make the last one just over 3 hrs and HBP 2 and 3/4 hrs it totally sucks there is so MUCH to put in!!!!

12.Detention(I hope so)

They better put the detention in there. I mean, Harry had a dislike for Umbridge since the hearing, but the detentions were the real impetus behind his pure hatrid of the horrible woman. If they do not include that, I will be surely ticked off.

I'd also like Fred and George's exit to be a big-ish scene. I don't want it to be like a 1 minute look at them playing pranks on her real quick. Personally, that was my favorite part of the book.

To incorporate the previous comments about GoF, I'm re-reading it at the moment and not even 250 pages in and finding SO much stuff they left out and it's so irritating. I really hope they do not do that in OotP, since it's my favorite book.

Also, I watched PoA for the first time in a while, and I realized they never explained who Padfoot, Prongs, Moony, and Wormtail are. Regardless, most of the viewers know from reading the books, but it just irritated me.

Bleh, I guess all we can do is hope they don't screw this up. :/
Sirius.James
I really hope it's at least three hours. I mean...come on. It almost has to be.

All three Lord of the Rings books put together is only a little bigger than Order of the Pheonix alone. And each one of those movies is three hours or more. It's just not fair. Tolkien fans are willing to sit in the theatre for three plus hours, and so are Harry Potter fans.

Maybe the directors haven't been as passionate as Peter Jackson. It almost makes me wish they had waited longer to make these movies. Then some great director with a huge love for Harry Potter might've come along and made all seven movies even more superbly. happy.gif

I just hope the movie does the story justice. mad.gif

Death Eater Snape
I am sure there will be 2 Movies of OOTP otherwise it will be just to long

Alsmost everything in the OOTP is important and if they cut it out in future stories they will hae to cut that out and change the whole movies to garbage. They have already cut out Winky and Dobby in the 4th movie but will they cut out Kreacher he is a MASSIVE part in OOTP and HBP so they just cant.

2 movies for atleast 2.5 hours each and they will be released about 2 days after each other Named

Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix Part 1
Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix Part 2

I am sure that they will be 2 Movies
Ginny+Harry<33
yea i have to agree with you Death Eater Snape because theres so many important scenes in the book. It would be really cool if they DID have two movies but you wouldn't have the first one fresh in your mind while you were watching the second one (i dont know about you but i have a horrible memory biggrin.gif )
yuzna
The two movie concept, though tempting, won't happen. Why? Well, its unheard of and WB isn't a movie studio known for taking risks. I find it more likely and I sincerely hope that they do what New Line did with Lord of the Rings...one version for the big screen and a second on DVD. By doing this you can please everyone, well not everyone...but still smile.gif
talli_tastik
it says in the what we know will happen on this site that the book is going to be a little bit smaller that the ootp
evanescence
WHat do you mean talli_tastik????I didn't understand that...
P.S.I said to you that I have seen an article in www.amazon.com where a child describes the outline of the film ans says that there is gonna be one movie from 170 to 190 minutes!
talli_tastik
i meen on this website there is a page called the what we know will happen in the 7th book and it says that the book will be a little bit smaller than the ootp book thats wat i meen
evanescence
ah....o.k.!But it's about the book not the films...alright, I understood rolleyes.gif
cuack
Now that the hole people of the world got6 some kind of opinion about Harry Potter I think they wont really care about the length. If one says: "Hey! The new Harry Potter is in theatres! Do you guys wanna see it?" No one will say: "No way! I wont stay in the cinema three hours!"
Anyway, I prefer the movie ten minutes longer, like 2:40. When Goblet ended I couldnt believe 2:30 minutes have past! I wanted more! I havent known anyone yet who had a different opinion! cool.gif
talli_tastik
i could sit nd watch harry potter all day like say if it was real it was like big brother i would watch it all nite i would ide sit in the cinema all nite i love watching hp films
Enough_space
I expect a 3 h long movie, everything moving in ultra-rapid just to manage to get as many scenes as possible and there'll still be things I'll miss... For short, just like the other movies.
evanescence
I guess, 190 minutes without the end credits it would be great!!!Oh, a big HP movie!!!At last!!!!! cool.gif I can't wait...but if I learn that it's gonna be less than 180 minutes, I am gonna kill them! mad.gif tongue.gif
smartman299
it is confirmed for a long time that it will not be a two parter. it will probably be a little longer than the goblet of fire. and chamber of secrets( knowing cos is longer than gof) thats probably what they will do. i hope they do a lotr. i dont think its likely but i really hope so
rosacooper44
I'm glad that they're not gonna do 2 movies for ootp, otherwise it just wouldn't be worth seeing.

No, i think its gonna be at least 3 hours long, otherwise..... well it will all be very crammed like gof. But however long it is, i'm gonna see it anyway!!!!
Moony_Lupin
The movies length ? most likely HP's movie always 3 hours right, but i noticed that OoTP books was indeed thick blink.gif blink.gif so i guess maybe 4 hours not sure also, anyway, have someone know which scene that cut out from the novels ? unsure.gif unsure.gif I hope the DA practise is appear in the movie wub.gif wub.gif
rosacooper44
The DA is in the movie, if you go to the gallery there is a photo of the DA. So i think it is included. And i remember reading somewhere that the scene/s is in the movie.

I don't think the film is gonna be four hours long, i don't think their aloud to do that (are they?). Anyway, it's gonna be between 3 hours and 3 hours and a half for sure...
evanescence
It will be from 170 to 200 minutes...eh?what do you think?
rosacooper44
170 minutes is... what, just under 3 hours. yep, i think so. 200 minutes is... 3 hours 20 minutes????? yep, probably somewhere in that region!!!!!
evanescence
hope we will see somthing between this time region
because, if it is under 170' i don't know what i'm gonna do...i will hate the whole series...every film less than 3 hours...pfff...at least, it will be good if it's bigger than COS... tongue.gif
Harry Potter Fan
I sure hope they include the important plot details for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. If they do it might exceed 3 hours. They just might make a part 1 and 2. If they were would be a good place to split it?
writer101
I think I would gladly go with two movies, if they could include everything. I mean, no quidditch? Such a bummer.
But where to cut it off? I was thinking at some big cliffhanger, to make people beg for the second half. Maybe right after Harry has the dream of Mr. Weasley and the snake? Who knows.
Any other ideas?
