After a new one comes out I read it twice and then go back and start from the beginning. Sad, maybe, but you always find little things that are mentioned that crop up again!
mel_tonks
LOL laugh.gif

I do the same thing. I have read HBP twice since it was released and now I have started from the beginning again.

I cant say I do this after every new book because HBP was the first time I had been waiting for a new book, the first five books had already been released when I got into Harry Potter.

I had actually bought them to read to my son, but he is still a bit too young to understand but I got hooked.

I am also going to re-watch the films as the books always put me in the mood for the films.

Can't wait for the new film, GOF is my fave HP book and I just hope the film does it justice.
Stupefy
Oh good I thought it was just me! biggrin.gif

And its nice to know there are some older people on here too like myself, yay!
* phoenix *
i do the same too!!! i was hoping that it wasnt jus me

like mel_tonks i only jus got into the books when the 5th one was out, so i have never known the waiting for the next book to come out feeling, and its horrible!!! after i've read the latest book im on a bit of a down coz you know you have to wait soo long for the next one! so you read them all over again to help get over it, and watch the films. but maybe thats just me!

plus i read all the books quite a few times, including just before the 6th one to come out so the're all fresh on my mind, does anyone else do that??
Jerry
I'm exactly the same.

I was working the day HBP came out, so couldn't read it until Sunday sad.gif

So when I got home on the Sunday morning, I speed read it (about 8 hours), and then took a break to get over my shell-shock and started again, slightly slower, finished this morning. I'll probably start a detailed re-read tonight...

I find it really hard re-reading the first parts slowly, because once you've read the last few chapters, I always want to go strait to them, it's an effort in self-control that I stick at it!

Problem is that everytime I get to the end, I want to the next book so badly I go into a downward spiral and have to go for a refreshing walk to clear my head...
Stupefy
Yeah, I read O.O.T.P. just before H.B.P. came out so it was fresh in my mind!

I just simply can't wait for the next one, I wish it was still one a year like C.O.S, P.O.A and G.O.F were!

heh heh- with book 5 and 6, I started reading the series again a few weeks before it came out....

And then since then, I've started rereading them again.

I'm hoping that JKR DOES only keep it to two years like it's supposed to be. Two years I can handle (I hope) but if it's longer than that or if the date keeps getting pushed back....EHHHH
Jerry
I want the next book *now*!! tongue.gif

Whenever I finish a HP book, especially one with an ending like HBP, I get a feeling in my chest, a niggling, urging, all-consuming NEED to read the next book...

I'm in a state of extreme annoyence at the moment, since I've read HBP twice now since Sunday, and my girlfriend is only on page 400, so I can't talk to her about it mad.gif

Oh well, wait or no wait, I'll still suffer sad.gif
(nah, just kidding, I'll just have to tough it out until november when the next film comes out)
zee_fleur
I read specific chapters from each book if i want to refere back to something

Hahahahaha, I have had the same problem, I read it twice and my house mate was still only about 1/3 of a way through, she didn't get it until sunday!

Luckily she finished it last night! biggrin.gif So we had a massive discussion! One of my friends is not talking to me though as she says I always ruin it for her by letting things slip and I threw a red herring at her and asked if she got to the bit where Hermione dies yet, hahahaha! I'm such a cow!
Jerry
lol, yeah, it's fun to throw red herrings in, I keep telling her that Slughorn is going to torture Harry and other randun nothings like that.

My problem is that I can't keep a strait face. tongue.gif
Prof. McGonagall
I strated reading the books after the third one came out.

When a new one is ready, I go back and re-read all of the previous ones before starting the new one, and then, I often read the new one one or two times.

I am interested in finding out what significance the first chapter will have. It must have SOME or it wouldn't be there.
Jerry
Feel free to shoot me for saying this, but I can't usually stand to got back and read any further than books two or three, simply beacause Harry is so gormless "Whats a muggle", "I'm a wizard", plus none of them know any good spells or jinxes...

I read books three, four and five a couple of times a year, just to stay refreshed...
Stupefy
Aww, I like the whole naivity of him in the early books!

P.O.A and G.O.F are definitely the best for juicy reads. I could read them over and over again (which I have!)
HermoinesHero
I have read SS, CoS, PoA, GoF, and Ootp 4 times each. I plan on reading HBP another 3 times before starting from the beginning again. It may sound crazy but hey, im a fanatic of HP!
HP6rox
I couldn't count how many times I read each book. They are just so fascinating and the surprises don't bore you. that is really rare in books! laugh.gif
Anyway I can't wait until HP 7 is released. I'll sleep outside the book shop!!!!! JOKE tongue.gif

This is true, they are so easy going I always read one when I want a book that entertaining and not to taxing! I enjoy to read anyway and some of the books I read are pretty serious and gritty so its nice to have something lighter to read!

Saying that, sometimes I think they are quite dark for a younger audience, she definitely grew with her readers!
mioneweasley_witch
As a Harry Potter fanatic I read every book Before the sixth book but sometimes i read them all over. But I read them too recently. The problem is I am still in 'Harry Potter Mode' and can't stop wanting to read over and over or think about it!
Hari
I am 18 now, started reading Harry Potter when number two came out. Must be 7 years ago now. I must say I wasn't really enchanted by the series until #3 came out. Waiting for number four I read the first 3 over and over, twice monthly was not uncommon.

When Goblet of Fire came out I tried a new tactic. I bought the book. I went home. I put the book down. Picked up Philosephers stone. You get the picture.

I wanted to do this with 5 and 6 too, but when 5 came out I was finishing my studies and was short on time. When 6 came out I was out of home and didn't have access to the first 5 books lol.

Let it be said I love Harry Potter.
shezachica85
yea i re read them all before a new book comes out or a new movie.. I'm a big book nerd and i read fast.. my roomie in college was always inpressed.. id finishe OthP in like a day and not missing any classes or work. i will re read all the books up to book 4 before the release of GoF and then read the other two after.. i also watch the movies... yea i know i have no life
emmalover
I read the 4th and 5th books 3 days before the HBP came out. I have read the first 5 books 3 times each now and I bet I'll read them all another time through before book 7 comes out.

Me and my friends were going to have a theme night before GoF comes out, all dress up and watch the first three. It's good, beacause it restils that internal drive to see the next installment, and since it'll be coming out, you can biggrin.gif

No more heartbreak...
H_Granger
Iīm one of the people who canīt count how often I read the books. But I only read each of them one time in german (my native language) and the other times in english. I find it more fascinating to read it in the original language. I even read O.O.T.P. in english and german at the same time.
Before HBP I only managed to read OOTP and GOF and begin with POA.
I started to read them after POA and it was every time a horror to wait for the next book. becauce I simpli need to read on and canīt await it. Itīs my hearts desire.
Now I want to reread HBP in detail and then I will go on rereading the other books in order to find some information.
I told my husband many things that happen in HBP, but he has to wait until october, 1st, when it is published in german.
But with my father iīm not allowed to speak about it until he has read it.
Meggie
So I'm not the only one who apparantly has no life. I've definitely read the first five books more times than I can count, and I'm on my third reading of HBP. Can't wait for #7! tongue.gif
LoyalToDumbledore
I do the same thing too! I'm glad I'm not the only one smile.gif I finished reading HBP on Saturday itself, and am currently in my second reading. I read bits and pieces of OOTP before HBP came out. Once I finish HBP, I'm going to read all the books again to see what falls in place, and how my perspective changes. I can't wait to re-read all of them!!! Once I'm done, I'll be so restless for the 7th book!! It'll be such a void after the 7th book, though sad.gif

I was really disappointed that half blood prince's identity did not play a decisive role in this book.. Sure, Snape's actions at the end is a vital part of the story, but everything would still be pretty much the same if Snape had a different nickname, or no nickname at all! Dont you all agree? I still think of Snape as Snape, not HBP. Whereas, I think of Voldemort as also the Heir of Slytherin. There was so much hype about the identity of HBP, I think everybody expected HBP's identity to be shell-shocking or something.. One of my friends who is still in the midle of the book said to me "I think Slughorn is the HBP, and he gave that book to Harry on purpose".. I remember sporting similar suspicions in my frantic 1st reading! That apart, I'm still a HUGE fan. There's no stopping me in that department smile.gif
abzz
Well....i read the 4th one right before the 6th one came out...dunno why though!! I've read all the books atleast twice...however i sort of refer to them...like an encyclopedia...quite frequently...really!! Reading odd bits here and there...to help me post accurate stuff in this forum!!!
Shanks, the Crook
It's good to know that I am not alone. I started reading the books after the 3rd movie came out. I just started with book 4!! Then I went back and read the first three, then four again and then five and now SIX! Like mel_tonks, I've been using my kids as an excuse, but they're really too young. My husband thinks i'm an idiot, but I just can't get enough Harry Potter! I don't know if I can wait for two years, but just think how many times we can all reread 1-6!

Your never too old for Harry Potter!

Do you buy the adult covers though? I don't bother, I mean, its common knowledge its aimmed at kids/teenagers so why try and hide the fact?

The new adult covers are quite snazzy though, they changed them all when OOTP came out!
Eluch
LMAO!!! laugh.gif I never stop reading HP books... I jus read them over and over and over again!!! I read the first four books five times each, the book 5 just 3 times, and the sixth one time (I finished it today). Now I'm going to read the sixth again, and then the 5, and then the 6 and then the 5 again, and the the 6 TWICE again, so the I'll can say "I've read HP books 5 times each one" tongue.gif .....the most funny thing's that probably I'll read the whole collection again before I have the seventh book
Pixieboy
Yea im the same, we all read them over and over!!! and always will! imagine what it will be like after the 7th..... sad.gif there will be nothing left, nothing to look forward to...!!!! sad.gif
the only thing that i tihnk of is, you shouldnt read it more than say twice, because then u pick up on things which Harry wouldnt and you are shouting, well dnt u remember the MIRROR ect.. Jk i think does this well, we pick up on stuff cuz we read about his life like 6 times over, its like us only reading the books once, he will only remember certain things...if you follow me. tongue.gif
pohai77
I also read the books many, many times. I don't even know how many times I read GOF which is my favorite one. The wait between GOF and OOTP was just so agonizing. It just drives me crazy that I'm in for another long wait for the next one.... Of course, there's a big part of me that doesn't want it to come because it should be the last one..... sad.gif
silencio
yep I do, I've red first four, 3 times already, the fifth twices. Not sure if I want to read the sixth because it is the saddest book so far, sadness overwhelm me when i red the last chapter of the book.
phoenix__tears
i've read the series 24 times, i'm on my 25th. they're amazing!!! the only things that get me through till the next books are mugglenet and veritaserum, especially mugglenet. it's my homepage. lol...but i'm gonna die when the next one comes, i'll read it and then be all depressed cuz it's the end of the series then!!!!!!! ah well, at least a couple more movies to look forward to...but they're not a millionth as good as the books...
Scamper
Well...I absolutely agree. I've read all the previous books to prepare for book 6. Now I am re-reading them to see the connection. And the interesting thing is that each time I read these books I find something new. I can't wait for the next book. I want it NOW!
firewhisky12
I go back too but not that far!

today I read goblet of fire in order to snatch Snape's evilness, but found out that he's innocent in book 6. Well, if you can call that git that
ginnyprae
Off course!!! i always do that! im really curious so, and I first get a book I read as fast as I can, my record was ootp in 2 days, theres some ppl that read it all in 1 day, but ill get there someday ;]
but then, after i read it fast like that i just start reading it again slowly, so i see things that Ive missed before
darkflux
The only time i go back to a harry potter book after reading it is if i have an idea for a theory for what may happen next and i'm looking for evidence to back-up that theory.
chrth
I was thinking of re-reading before 6 came out, but didn't have time, so I didn't bother. After I finished 6, though, I was compelled to reread the series, because it tied in with so much from the previous books (in fact, if I had a choice of reading 7 immediately afterwards or reread the previous ones, I would've reread the others first!).

Needless to say, I got some funny looks from my wife that week as I essentially read the entire series (including the 6th one for a second time) non-stop during my free time. But on the plus side, I did find the locket...
miniChronic
Hey me too. I've read the five at least 6 times, one after the other so I can keep everything fresh in my mind. The most recent time I did this was the month just before HBP. That way I could read them like Lord of the Rings times two. I am currently on my third reread of HBP. Who knew I missed so much the first two times?
Sirius Will Return!
i do that too, except when a book is coming out, i go back and read the previous one, like before the sixth came out, I would re read the 5th. Then, i go back and start from book 1!
starlight
i reread all the book and i found loads of stuff that hinted to future books, or the ones that were the future when i read them. but i think is fun to read them again because you get more out of them.
xKissesxforxVoldyx
Me! I've read many of the books over 7 times.... Pathetic... I know... blink.gif
dobby_luver001
yes i read them all in order 5 times before the 6th book that was in the space of 2months and i was bored wen i finished the half blood prince coz i had nothin 2 do so i read them again...now thats sad i know! hurry up jk i need book 7! sad.gif
SeventhHorcrux
I have all the audiobooks and i listen to them on my ipod. It is so nice to lay in bed at night listening to Jim Dale (the best audiobook reader ever). Actually ifanyone wants to buy the entire set of six audiobooks from me, I will sell it for $50, when they really are a $250 value. These are audio files that can be put onto your ipod, computer, or other mp3 player and listened to whenever you want. (Itunes sells this collection of books for $249.99.) Email me at Rob8all@aol.com if interested
marire
I've read them all far too many times, but I just can't stop, they're so good.I started again about two week ago and now I'm in Goblet of fire, in the chapter Goblet of fire. biggrin.gif
Dumbledore's_Hat
Just finished reading OOTP for the 4th time today...Wow! I saw so much more stuff that i'd missed (especially Aberforth!)

I didn't have time to read them all before HBP came out, so over the last 4 weeks I've read them all again...but now that I'm up to the 6th one again, I can't bring myself to read it... I'm too busy to relive that emotional exhaustion, not to mention that I can't bear Dumbledore dying again, not yet...*sniff*
littlexoxlotte
i re-read the books atleast twice a year, I reread all of them when half blood prince came out, and i'm probebly going to reread ootp, and hbp sometime soon because i dont' really remember it all
HP number one Fan
Its deffinatly not sad. When I finished the 6th one I couldnt remember some of the events that happened in previous books so i went back to book 3 and read 4 and 5 and now im back on 6 again biggrin.gif They are too good to leave to gather dust tehehehe!
mrssirusblack
I watched the first two movies before I even picked up the first book. The people I work with kept telling me that I needed to read the books because they were so much better than the movies, and boy were they right. I started reading all the books after the first five were out and I read through them very quickly. I was glued to the books and just could not put them down. I have only read the books one time each, but I do listen to all of them on audio. Once I listen to all six books, I just start from the beginning again. People at work think I am crazy for listening to them over and over, but I really enjoy them and I always seem to learn something new.
PigWithHair
Have I re-read the books? Just ask my family.

I've read through all of them, and I read with my son at bedtime (we're on Book 2, though we've read Azkaban twice..he's anxioius to read Goblet before we see the movie).

Every time I go back and re-read one I pick up a bunch of stuff I didn't get before so I have to go back and re-read the others to try and see what else I can glean.

I just don't get sick of reading them...my younger sons play the GameCube games though have not seen the movies or had the books read to them and now my husband has gotten into reading the books. Lots of fun!
