Was anyone else surprised when they read the O.W.L. grade report and there really was "T - Troll" listed on there as a possible grade? I really thought it was just one of the Weasleys' jokes!

I was half surprised. I thought there would be one if Fred and George said but that was also suprising that they were right. It was confussing! I hope someone did get Troll!

Lol..I thought that it was one of Weaslys' jokes too and when I saw it on the grades report..I was like "What the...?"
Poor guys..It's weird that they use it..I can't imagine someone calling me Troll, saying that I have as much brain as him or that my work was that pitiful, and I believe that Neville (and he's not the only one) got that grade. I think that they must change it..it seriously decreases the self-confidence.

To me, it was more funny than suprising. I did too think that it was only a Weaslys joke, but it was fun that OWLs actually had that grade. I wouldn't be too suprised if Rowling only meant it as a joke first, but then decided to make it a real grade.

Yeah, she probably meant it as a joke, but decided, hey why not? But I wouldn't think that a school would do that. That would definitely lower self-confidence for any student. Plus, what if you have ttroll ancestry? Marcus Flint has been rumored to be part troll, so wouldn't that be a bit insulting to him? (But that does explain why he was at Hogwarts an Extra year. Because he was dumb, and got all Trolls or something.) I thought the Troll grade was humourous, but I definitely wouldn't want it to show up on a report card.

Yeah, I agree. I imagine to even get this grade, you'd probably have to get like a 0 on an exam or just not show up. After all, Harry only answered like maybe two or three questions on the History of Magic exam and even those weren't very good answers. And yet he didn't get a T.
So did someone actually get a Troll grade? Dunno, probably. I'm always surprised how badly some people can fail exams.

I completely agree. I guess I didn't catch my first run through the series but I did notice it earlier this week. Does that mean that Trolls are the dumbest creature alive? That's mean to tell someone they have the brain capacity of a Troll, yet overly funny as well

I never use the word Troll but I know some of my friends do (it really depends on where you live)

but that's more because of the myths we have in our country, and yes, Trolls aren't very bright

.
It did gave me quite a laugh when I read it. Like many others I also thought the Weasleys were just joking.

I was sure that the weasley were joking because even Hermione the all- knowing super- student didn't know about "Troll". I really had to laugh when I read it on the grades report.
But I thhink you have to be REALLY bad to receive a Troll.... Who knows, maybe Crabbe or Goyle got one...

Yeah, I can totally see Crabbe or Goyle getting a Troll grade. I mean, it has to be like a 0 or something very close and they seem like they're near that. Although they did at least manage to make it into sixth year.

That's a very good point, I didn't even think about that. Sorta adds to the theory that maybe Jo just sorta decided to include it after the fact.

i wasn't really surprised when i read it... harry didn't know for sure either if it was just a joke...
and i agree that you'd have to be VERY stupid to get a 'T' harry and ron didn't get one in divinations and we know they are 'not very good' at it lol
i don't think neville got a 'T' either... he really trys to be good and he learns, so i think he couldn't get a 'T', but crabbe and goyle...

That's the brilliance of Jo's world. In the real world everything is so serious and clinical - especially important exams and stuff. The wizarding world is so out of the box it's hilarious!
You really think it's a joke, and then it turns out that full-grown, serious wizards had decided on calling a grade that without blinking an eye. Imagine you got a grade that said Troll - I'd think I'd die laughing!

I hope Crabbe and Goyle got troll. That would be so funny! Indeed, I thought that troll was some made up thing of the twins. I never actully expectedit to be real. I guess that means the twins are right about getting exceeds expectations for showing up. (Just kidding) That is funny! \

In British GCSEs there's a grade called "U", which means "ungraded", which is what you get if you don't turn up or refuse to do the paper or something. So maybe "T" is like that?
The way I see it, Hogwarts has got to have its quirks. It's never going to pass an Ofsted inspection, but it's fun.

I mean, if there really was one, you'd think Snape would have given it to Harry, right? hahaha.

Yes, it was funny, and was most likely put in the book purely for comical relief. I am actually extremely surprised at Jo Rowling for doing that, however.
One of the many themes of the Harry Potter books is acceptance. In the Harry Potter World, there is a lot of harmony between races, backgrounds, walks of life, gender, age, etc. By putting the "Troll" grade in the O.W.L.S. scoring system, it is a huge diss to the troll race and goes against the book's theme....
Oh well. Call me a part pooper. I still thought it was pretty funny

It sort of makes me wonder what Neville got on his O.W.L's...

Really? Because I never got the impression that there was a lot of harmony. I always got the impression that the wizards (in general, not all) think that they’re better than the other magical races.
Anyway, back on topic, I thought it was great. I wasn’t sure what to think when the Troll grade was first mentioned because you really can never tell with the twins. However, I think it’s a great grade and quite humorous.

I was half surprised, half amused. I thought it was a joke the Wealsey twins were putting on Harry, Ron, and Hermione. I think it's really kind of funny that there is an actual grade of Troll. Isn't that kind of an insult to whoever gets it? That they are as stupid as a troll?

when i actually saw the T for "troll" on the O.W.L.S. i laughed because i remembered the weasley twins mentioning that and the way they said it sounded sarcastic. it was very funny as hermione never thought that there was a "troll" grade. for me i was suprised a bit but i made me laugh aloud more because of the story behind it. hehehe!! nice try weasley.

Ah..the first and only time I read HBP was the day it came out, a long time ago. But I actually think that I laughed histerically when I came to that part. I was a little surprised, and very amused as well. Like someone said, Hermione didn't know about it, and that's pretty rare, considering that the grade rankings might've been in Hogwarts: A History.
I would love it if Jo didn't think about putting it as a real grade, but changed her mind, for it would make the reader feel as though she added that little bit just for us, haha, but that doesn't make sense, since the whole books are just for us..heh.
I think that David's right though. It does seem to create even more of a boundary between the creatures, even if it's meant as a joke. But then again, there was a time when the creatures lived in harmony, and that might've been the time when the grades were established, which were when Hogwarts was created...or do you think they changed the system?
Anyway, the trolls might've taken it as a joke...or not even known about it if they're supposed to be challenged....

I was sure the twins were joking, the first time. I mean, what self respecting school would give a grade named Troll?! I was surprised and really amused when I saw it in HBP...
My guess is that Dumbeldore decided to give out Troll grades. His odd sense of humor certainly hints at that...

I bet Malfoy's grades were good. Better than Harry's anyway. I don't think anyone ever gets a T. You would need to leave the test blank to do that. Still, I could see Goyle and Crabbe getting one or two of them.

Getting Troll seems to be one of the High School Myths. It definately exists but is so rare and uncommon, you'd probably have to either leave the paper blank or just be a complete Hag to not at least get Poor or Dreadful. I'm surprised that Harry didn't get a Troll in his Owl's. He was asleep in most of History of Magic, let alone knowing almost nothing about the subject.

I have to admit too, I thought it was a joke

But that is kinda of mean to the trolls, I agree. There might have been some intelligent ones! Not likely I admit, but hey, anything is possible in JK Rowling's world. To get a Troll grade, you'd probably have to get in the minuses or something

Now that WOULD be funny.
