Alright guys...I've been contacted by quite a few members recently asking if a 24 thread can be set up, so here you go

Seems like there's quite a lot of interest around the forums in it so hopefully it should see a bit more action than some of the other TV and movies threads, whose "deaths" were the main reason why we set the rule banning any more of these in the first place...

Anywho...
I've put a disclaimer in the topic title for you so feel free to discuss all the seasons if you want to.

I haven't seen Season 5 yet. I didn't even know there was a Season 5! lol...
I've got the DVDs of the first three (I still have to get the fourth). It's an amazing series. The first one was so incredibly and ground-breakingly brilliant, so consistent in its suspense and action, that it seemed impossible to get a second series that was as good ... but the second was brilliant as well, with incredible moments.
I pray that the series will continue to have good writers, because it stands and falls with the writing. It's a tall order to sustain this kind of excellence though. You can tell that in some places the third series was slipping.

You know, this is the first time I've ever really watched 24--I blame it on my wife, though. It's tough to get her interested in action/suspense shows. She has no problem with shows like Amazing Race, American Idol, and even things like My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance, but try and get her interested in something good and forget about it.
Unfortunately, I can't compare Season 5's quality to the others but I'm impressed with the details. Things like a scene this last week where Jack is talking with someone he obviously had a relationship with in his previous life. The brief cut as they're talking that shows her reaching for his hands and him not reaching back was telling.
I just wish I had some of the back plot so I understood more of the subtle subtexts, but even so, the plot is still gripping enough that I can get into it this late in the game.

I would highly recommend renting previous seasons. Putting Jack and Audrey's relationship into context only requires Season Four, but to fully grasp all of Jack's many issues, you have to get back to Season One. It's been awhile since I've seen Season One, but I keep thinking it would be interesting to go back and watch back when Jack wasn't half as emotionally screwed-up as he is now. Furthermore, the major deaths in the season premiere this year lack a certain amount of impact without having seen previous seasons. If you have watched all along, well... it's just all too much.
Though I like to brag that I totally saw both deaths coming a mile away, partially just because I pay too much attention to the credits at the beginning of the show, though, which can contain subtle spoilers if you know names of actors and such...

I've watched 24 since it began and even in it's fifth season seems to still have fresh suprises, cliffhangers and the ability to entrall their audience.
Season 5 is just as tense, exciting; but also tragic. What with President Palmer's assasination, Ms. Dessler's murder, her husband's (forgot his name

) coma, not to mention Jack's stumbling love-life...
I have to admit though the intensity and endless life-death situations was a bit strong for me especially in the earlier seasons.
So the second terrorist plot is nerve gas and we know there are moles scurrying about the Feds
again; but who could be the real bad guys?

Well, I guess I couldn't stay out of this thread for very long...

Bumblebee - where have you been, girl?!

Though I have to admit I haven't seen season five yet either because we don't get it in Britain until February - which is fine with me because if I didn't have some spoilers, I'd never be able to watch it at all! 24 is the type of show that gets your blood pumping in a way that I don't think any other show every created could possibly match and the way they leave you hanging is just awful...I've watched all the previous seasons on DVD and I honestly think that's the best way to watch it because then you can see the next one right away. We've been known to have marathon 24 nights in our house where we've been up till 3 in the morning watching it

And from conversations I've had with my mates who like the show too, I'm far from the only one!
I thought season one dragged a little in the beginning, I have to admit. But it was good all the same, don't get me wrong. Out of them all so far though, I think season two was undoubtedly the best...season 3 came a pretty close second though.
I'd really recommend seeing them all if you can because then, as traz said, you'll have a much better understanding of the characters backgrounds, histories and motivations which will make the...er...emotional punches from season five that much heavier

Absolutely the best show on TV right now by a long way - the X Files was never even in the same league and that's really saying something, coming from me

I got the fourth season DVDs today! I won't have time to do a marathon until after my visit to London next week, but I'm really looking forward to it.
So, as not to spoil things too much since there are some spoilers in this thread, I probably won't come back here until after my marathon sessions ... in a few weeks or so ...

It was kinda sad to see Palmer go. He was the reason I started watching the show (I liked his performance as the scientist in Now and Again). But he has a new show coming up, so no worries.
I'd like to echo what I've seen on some other sites and in the media --- Jean Smart is doing a great job as the President's wife, Mrs. Martha Logan, who he thinks is completely insane, but really has important info. And I love the sort of creepy theme music they've created for her.

For those who saw this Monday's show...

That was a great plot twist from the last episode, a bit complicated but in the end things starting turning for the better and worse at the same time. I still don't trust the misguided aid to the President, though.

Doesn't his ploy seem like the traitor's situation from the first two seasons, but in reverse?
Jack may have a truce with the President, yet his problems certainly aren't over personally.
Oh I hope Mrs. Logan takes the steering wheel of the Presidency, Mr. Logan doesn't have the integrity Palmer had.

i'm considering on starting to watch 24(as i have heard it is amazing) so i need your guys opinion on something...should i find out what has happened in the previous seasons from my brother(who is a fanatic) or rent the DVD's?
Tuitus
Feb 1 2006, 10:31 PM
I'd say both because your brother as a fan has a perspective on the series and may give a very detailed description of the previous days. I also recommend renting the seasons to see whether you like the pace and endless suspense 24 makes, especially with the digital countdown. So your brother's details could make clearer sense of the plot as it is famous for cliffhangers and plot twists and the rentals offer an opportunity for you to enjoy it as a show.
Agent0042
Feb 2 2006, 12:51 AM
I'd also recommend both. Do whatever you can to find about the past seasons, but don't be put off from watching the series even you don't know everything yet. One of the myths regarding the series is that you have to completely know everything about past seasons in order to really enjoy it, but that's not true. While it does enhance it, you can still enjoy it a lot even without knowing all of that.
Anyway, yeah, Monday's episode was great! I wanted to talk about it, but was waiting for someone else to respond. I don't trust Cummings either, but I don't like the President also. He's so lame. But this episode had great suspense, some awesome Kiefer moments and plenty of other great stuff. One of my favorites to date.

Feb 2 2006, 12:52 AM
Monday's show cracked me up at least twice, though neither time was actually intentional humor. The first time I laughed was when Jack was getting out of the car to talk to Novick. I can't help but laugh and cheer everytime I see him strapping on the man-purse, so that gave me great enjoyment. The second time was when Logan suddenly flipped sides for the second time in ten minutes when Jack and Aaron busted in. I couldn't help but laugh at Logan's ridiculous spinelessness. Logan is such a big, dumb, gutless coward. Usually it's just really annoying, but this time, it downright had me rolling.
Looking forward to the rest of the season. Who else other than me is not ready to believe that Spencer as the mole isn't just evil, but was entirely manipulated? I still think he's bad and just lied about the level of his involvement to save his own butt. Also, when do you suppose Tony's going to wake up? My original guess was by episode 6, but that was blown, so now my money's on 8. Oh yeah, and how long do you give Buchanan before Lynn just completely usurps him and kicks him out to the curb? At first, I wouldn't have thought it would be too long, but now I'm hoping that doesn't happen. I actually really like those two bickering with each other.

I have to say, this season is really dissapointing me. Everything is just reused material from the other seasons. Thats what it seems like to me. There hasn't been a lot of action and the show hasn't made me excited for the next episode yet. Everything is quite predictable. I hope they add in more action and keep me on the edge of my seat! I'm still not giving up hope, 24 is one of my all time favorites.

I'm having mixed reactions to this season. I usually find it pretty exciting and interesting while it's happening, but sometimes, the retrospective look isn't quite as favorable... But I don't know. The jury's still out for me, I think. I'm digging it well enough.
I have to say: I would have expected/hoped Sean Astin's character to stick around a bit more (though I'm sure we can expect to see more of him), and maybe even do a bit more damage. He got pretty annoying, but I liked him in a weird sort of way, particularly when he first game in. Still, though, he got unbearable in the last two hours or so, so it's not like I'm sad to see him dethroned. But I'm also hoping for more. What can I say? He's my favorite Hobbit!

Oh i am so happy that he is gone. This season has been very well-done, in my opinion. And right now is probably the biggest cliffhanger that we've had all season. I mean, the terrorist just told the President that he was about to use the canisters of nerve gas in America. The worst part is that Jack doesn't even know about the attack on the Suvarovs or the terrorist/President plan that failed. Maybe his lead will end up being important. There is only one thing for sure. Tomorrow is going to be awesome.

I don't like how people are treating McGill so harshly. Let's not forget how he was the one who understood what "FLANK 2" meant, which pretty much saved everyone's lives; the police and the civilian hostages (and Jack!). He's really only going on his "warpath" because President Logan has been yelling at him ever since Jack disobeyed orders and didn't allow the terrorists to release the whole first canister in the mall (which ended up happening anyway!)
But yeah, great season, great show.

Oh... Poor Edgar! I saw his death coming a mile away, but that was just too bad. And poor Chloe, feeling Edgar's death. I know a lot of people hate Chloe, but I actually kind of love her in her weird, blunt way, and now she's lost the only other person in the world - other than Jack - who can not only put up with her, but actually even like her too. Aww! At least Edgar got the silent clock-out, though... That was nice.

Well, I never thought I'd see the day.
Guys, you might be seeing another user-name change in the offing here as I'm now officially the worlds biggest 24-hater after what they did....I just can't believe it...I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.
What on earth has gotten in to the writers this season? It absolutely sucks - I'm sorry, but it does.
They've killed off everyone who gave the series heart and soul - now it's just the Jack Bauer-tortures-everyone show. Not to mention that it's the same old storylines yet again - how many more times can terrorists steal chemical/nuclear weapons and threaten LA with them? And Logan...how anyone could elect a complete and utter invertebrate like him into the White House is beyond me. There's not a single character left that I care two jots about now and once they've done that, there's nothing to keep me interested anymore. If you don't care who lives and who dies, then there's not much point in watching anymore.
Someone really needs to tell the writers that in order to keep people interested, they need more than just action - you have to have characters to drive it. They may as well label it Die Hard 4 and bring Bruce Willis in.
Wow...I just don't know what to say. Grief-stricken is what I am right now. Yup, grief-stricken.
Well, back to James Bond it is then, I guess.

I think it s not so a bad idea to kill some characters ...
If they hold the same characters, then there's always the same dialogue with the same people, so with new characters it's more refreshing
The audience of 24 were not so good for Season 2 and 3, so they have made big chances since the 4th Season and ... well the 5th Saison has the best audience of the whole 24
Honestly i think that the 5th Season is the best one until now.
The beginning is explosiv, stunning, amazing
Then from the 6th episode it calms down a little bit, but from the 10th one it becames amazing again, and now the tragedy - the dead of Tony
Louise
Mar 18 2006, 03:52 PM
I don't have a problem with them killing off characters, so long as they bring in plausible new ones to replace them. They haven't done that yet. No one I care about anyway. Tony, Michelle and David were strong, very well written characters with backgrounds and relationships to Jack that made you care about what happened to them all. Developing that took time - by wiping them all out, we're left with a host of new people (well...sort of...they're all a bit flat at the moment) that don't matter. They don't know Jack very well, we haven't had time to get to know them and it's going to take another four seasons to build up the kinds of relationships that made viewers care so much when they do kill off people like David, Tony and Michelle.
Don't forget - look what happened to the X Files when they lost David Duchovny. You can't completely restructure the cast of a long running TV show and not expect people to get annoyed by it. I have to wonder if the high ratings are based on a mixture of hype and loyal viewers who just wanted to see how Tony and Michelle worked out. How can viewing figures for a show like 24 increase anyway? They must be bringing in new viewers who haven't seen the previous seasons...in which case, they have no idea who half the people are. I don't suppose they'll care very much who lives and who dies, but if they've done that at the expense of their loyal viewers, then I can't say I think much of the studios.

Mar 21 2006, 07:44 AM
*Sigh* ... Well, I was actually refusing to believe that Tony was dead, but this week confirmed it. My dim hopes dashed... I have mixed feelings about all the deaths (of Tony, Michelle, and Palmer). I can roll with a death of a major character like that every now and again. It can be shocking and exciting and emotional, and keeps a sort of feeling that they might go ahead and do anything on the show (short of killing Jack, at least, which they'll probably do eventually anyway, even if it is several seasons away). And I could even accept the double-shock of Palmer and Michelle both dying in the first episode. With Tony, though... I really do think they went too far. What was the purpose of having him survive in the first place anyway? Just so they could give us a little bit of hope and then bash our heads in with it? No, I think the killing of Tony was an amazingly stupid move.
Not that I don't have any investments in characters that are left. I may well be the only person on the planet who actually likes Chloe, but... Yes, I would be sad if she died... Possibly amused too, particularly if she were killed unexpectedly by a coworker who just got fed up with her... but sad. I also like Curtis. I don't think I'd shed any tears were they to axe him, but I do like him... Hmm... Yeah, I can see how it can be a problem that we just don't have the same investment with the replacement characters we've been given.... I like Buchanan too, but his death wouldn't even make me blink... Yeah...
So Tony, Michelle, and Palmer all died this season... (none even receiving the honor the silent timer)... Tony even died on an episode that featured Kim... And yet: Kim is still alive?! What's up with that?! Are they saving the cruel and unusual violent death of Kim for the final season, at which time they'll reward us for watching all this time by devoting an entire episode to the torture of Kim, followed immediatly by her death? They'd better be! If they wanted to kill off old characters for some sort of emotional punch (I'm sure that somebody out there must like Kim... or at least there are plenty who would be sad to see her die just 'cuz she's hot), then they could have just gone ahead and offed Kim, instead of Tony! I mean: she was right there! And don't tell me it would have been too much for Jack to take and move on with the day. 'Cuz uh-uh. Jack wouldn't even take five minutes to mourn Kim. He'd take one, then he'd get sweet revenge and lose it at the end of the season... 'Cuz that's what Jack does. He gets the job done... and then he cries.
Anyway, I'm not giving up on 24. I like most of the characters well enough still, even if I don't like them quite as much as the ones that have already been killed. Plus, as long as 24 can keep me laughing, I'll still tune in. I don't know about anyone else, but when the new woman from Homeland Security was telling Jack that he would face reprecussions, and his response was just so, "Yeah, sure. Whatever," I busted a gut. That, and the man-purse can still make me laugh.
Oh, and also... referring to that little twist at the end about Audrey... Let me just be the first to say: "Wha-huh?!!"

Now that it's all over, I just wanted to see what everyone thought about this season. Since it's the only one I've seen, my perspective is not as valuable as those who have seen them all since the beginning. I know Louise was sorely disappointed at one point, and traz said that sometimes the in-the-moment reactions are different than a retrospective analysis, so tell me if this season was better than, worse than, or about the same as previous seasons so I can determine how eagerly I should pursue going through the previous seasons.

I just watched the season finale tonight, and... I thought the season as a whole was pretty good. There were some disappointment factors in that they killed off some characters most of us probably really wish they hadn't killed off... but over-all, I still enjoyed it a lot. The last episode was pretty satisfying to me. Part of me thinks that I kinda would have liked to see Logan killed, but then, there's another part of me (and possibly a greater part of me) that likes seeing him just brought to justice. I would've laughed in glee if they would do something that they would never do and just line him up in front of a firing squad, but... still, the end-result worked for me. I'll save my thoughts on Jack's situation for next year, 'cuz I really don't know what to think about that (though, I was just commenting last night before I got to watch the episode that I was going to be a little put-off if something didn't happen sooner or later with the whole situation with China; I would have been bothered by them not bothering to seek retribution after what a big deal it was last year).... Oh, a couple other closing thoughts on this season: Chloe has an ex-husband? The huh?! We didn't know that before, right?... And also: Buchanan and what's-her-name... not exactly Tony and Michelle, but I thought they were kinda adorable right there at the end anyway. *shrug*
Now... as far as how the season compares to previous seasons... I don't know. I think this season did a lot of things pretty well. Mainly in that I think they paced it fairly well. Not perfectly, but I've always thought pacing has been an issue for the show, and that it seems like they learn from year to year how to improve those problems from the last. It was also very exciting. I have no idea whether I think it's better or worse, though... that may take some pondering. Personally, I've always kinda liked season one best, but I know that's not a universal opinion or anything.... I don't know. It's hard to call for me, which I think should probably be encouraging in going back to watch previous seasons, because it means that - at least in my opinion - you should probably like each of them about as much as this year, if not more (or at the very least, not much less), so... whatever that counts for.

Australia is so far behind than you guys! They have just only started the 5th season. Now, I am slightly upset because I've missed about 15 or 20 minutes in the 1st episode which is usually the crucial part of the season and imagine my surprise when I saw that Palmer, Michelle and Tony (? Doesn't sound like he is dead) are dead. WHAT?! They are my favourite characters in the entire series...I'm hoping when I watch more episodes that somehow and someway that Michelle isn't really dead.
I'm very disappointed because as you guys have said, they are the most developed characters in the entire series and also know Jack personally. Nonetheless, my sister and I have a great time watching it so far (think we are up to 7 or 8th hour as we were blessed to have multiple 2 hr episodes) and we are always screaming at someone to get on with it or at Logan's stupidity.
Ah I just found this thread *lol*. I have watched 24 from the beginning. It's about the only show I was using Tivo for. Happily about a quarter of the way through the season they started offering the episodes for download on iTunes so now I am going with that option as I have tons of storage.
This season was not disappointing in the least and the first 10 minutes of the show were a complete shock. I had to pick my jaw off the floor

But I understand why they had to do it. Palmer moved to a new show called The Unit which has done well in the ratings, Michelle has moved on to movies, and Tony...I read something about him just the other day but can't recall what he moved on to. I was alright in seeing Palmer go only so much in that his part was really played out as far as it could go. Michelle I am ambivalant about but I was sad to see Tony go. I was hoping he would get a reprieve because both him and Michelle could have been used further. Alas the writers went with shock value. But I would imagine that they are wanting to develop some other characters and infuse new blood. They even killed off poor old Edgar.
Compared to the previous seasons I would have to rank it 3rd. The first season was of course the best, Season 4 was my second favorite. But overall all seasons are some of the best entertainment out there. 24's cult following is almost as fanatical as HP fans are and with good reason. If you haven't watched 24 I highly recommend it. You would be very hard pressed to find someone that doesn't like the show once they give it a chance.

Well, 24 has an awful penchant for killing off some of their best characters and this season looks like no exception. It was an unbelievable twist, but as one site that I like to read put it, "Just because a twist is shocking, doesn't make it great." I guess the point is, if you want to watch 24 try not to get too attached to any of the characters. I won't name names though, since I'm sure there must be people out there who are going to watch the show that haven't yet.
The show's moving along at a good clip, though, and I'm enjoying it. Apparently Ricky Schroder will be showing up in the 13th episode. That should be interesting. I read that he's finally given in and returned to using "Ricky" instead of "Rick". Once a child star, always a child star.
No sign of Audrey or Kim yet, which is another bonus. Hopefully Kim is stuck in a neverending psychoanalysis with that boyfriend of hers from last season.
If people are interested in Spoiler-ridden recaps, there's a very entertaining one intermingled with blog posts on
this website. It may not continue as the recapper was very upset with the latest character assassination, but I'm betting she'll be back on next week. She threatened to quit after the Tony incident last season as well, but carried on in the end.
So I'm pretty excited 24's on again. My wife could be happier, though.

The way I see it, if I could (more of less) get over the three characters I love that were unceremoniously disposed of last year, I can get over anyone.

Hopefully Kim is stuck in a neverending psychoanalysis with that boyfriend of hers from last season.
Is it too much to hope for that Kim might have been hanging out in a certain area of LA near the end of the fourth episode that I won't be any more specific about for fear of spoiling....? Yeah, I guess that's probably too much to hope for. If they couldn't see fit to take care of Kim while they had the chance last year in the Season of Deaths-a-Plenty, then it's probably too much to hope for now. She and her boyfriend are probably off somewhere being chased by cougars. Or perhaps they're dealing with killer bees or something. You know it's something... Well, rats, now I've made myself wish they spun Kim off into her own series. It would be about ten times over the top a series as 24, but... you can't say it would be boring, really...
All that nonsense aside, I'm enjoying the new season so far. I find Jack's new characterization to be a very interesting new direction for him, and I like how the story is playing out. Plus, President Wayne Palmer! It's not exactly having David Palmer back, but it's close enough to make me happy. Is it me, or has Milo become a little too prickly since we last saw him so many years ago? It could just be me. It occurs to me I don't really remember what his character was like back in Season 1. Do you know what type of character Ricky Schroder is going to play?
Albus-wan
Jan 19 2007, 03:12 PM
Ricky Schroder will be a field agent working with Jack. I guess this could go two ways, either they'll kill him off before the 24th hour or they'll continue to try him out to see if people like him enough that they could start working him in to possibly keep people interested in the series after they kill off Jack. You know they're going to kill off Jack, they just need a viable replacement before they do. I think Kiefer has something like a 5 season contract at this point, though, so they have a while to establish a character that could keep it going.
I don't know if I will ever be able to look past Silver Spoons completely though. I'll always be expecting him to whip out a remote control to open the front door or ride in on an oversized toy train.
