Be||atrix
The title is self-explanatory.

While reading GoF:

page 84:
"Muggle women wear them, Archie, not the men, they were these," said the Ministry wizard, and he brandished the pinstriped trousers.
"I'm not putting them on," said old Archie in indignation. "I like a healthy breeze 'round my privates, thanks."

page 201:
"It is Uranus, my dear," said Professor Trelawney, peering down at the chart.
"Can I have a look at Uranus too, Lavander?" said Ron.

I think that is fine.I mean they are no way crossing the limits as they are crossed in Americian movies.lol.Well she was just creationg a funny atmosphere. She is very practical in this sense.I mean you meet different people of different categories in the world.Cant change the circle. And anyways i dont understand uranus thingy. Can you please explain it.I never even thought it any other way. Please clearify.Hope you will.
marrymerupert
I'm not sure if be||atrix was trying to say that JK crossed any lines... forgive me if you were... I just think she was saying that she never thought that JK would put those things in her books... they are quite amusing I must say... but these are technically children's books... I don't really see anything wrong with them either... but anyways...
And the Uranus thing... it's a play on words kind of thing... Uranus the planet and Your-Anus... basically Ron was saying "Yeah, can I see your butt too Lavender?" Hope that clears it up for you... Ciao for now!
Anna N Ashley
Well thanx. But i was not saying lines i was saying limits and i was saying that there is no harm in writing just a few lines just for fun.She must be having her reasons and about Ron's thing i think she was trying to elaborate the kind of Ron's character.

And you seem to be a Rupert's fan i would just say that i love him too.
Aristoth, Savior of Payon
one that made me laugh a bit ( and i know it was'nt technically what we're talking about)
was when (I cant remember the page, erm, just after dumbledore was killed in hbp)
when slughorn comes in;
"SNAPE" ejaculated slughorn.

i just always found that a bit funny, even the first time i read dumbledores death laugh.gif
SeventhHorcrux
HAHA, after I had read the book, my friend was reading it in the car while I was driving, and he just started laughing. He found the ejaculating part pretty funny too.

"SNAPE" ejaculated slughorn.

That one always had me a bit stumped. I never quite understood how you can verbally ejaculate? blink.gif

Whenever I've come across that Uranus line, I've always pictured Rupert delivering it, which makes it even funnier. He seems so well suited to that sort of comedy. smile.gif
Sophsicle
I was surprised that she used the word 'slut' in HBP - when harry and dumbledore go into the pensieve to the time where Tom Riddle's mother was being accused of being in love with Tom Riddle Senior. It was realistic and I wasn't offended or anything - but just a little surprised that she was allowed to use that particular word considering the general age group of her readers. I'm aware that a majority of readers are adults - but still...

I found the 'healthy breeze around my privates' remark just funny and nothing else. I didn't think it was shocking or anything. Same goes with the Uranus comment - partly because so many people make that joke.

As for the verbal ejaculation - it's definitely legitimate - it's just that most people associate it with it's other connotation. Though I'd be lying if I said it didn't cross my mind when I read it!
Just the Droobles
I found a lot of what has been said all rather comical. I found another "ejaculated" line in another book where Ron said something, but I also can't lie that the other interpretation didn't cross my mind.

At least the "healthy breeze" one used the word privates. Privates is about as clean as you can get it. I mean it was sort of weird in the fact that it was sort of like cross-dressing, but it was basically just an uninformed wizard.

Did it really say slut? I'm going to have to go check that....well, upon scanning my American version, I found no "slut". But you can't forget then she has used the word "damn" and a number of vulgar hands gestures, and many vulgarities have been suggested coming out of Ron. It is a book about teenagers, so I guess we could expect nothing less. I'm not real bothered by it, but you know...
El Barto
I think verbal ejaculation is like praying...I saw it in the Bible once which refered to praying.

But in this case, where Slughorn says Snape's name, then I guess it could mean he was in disbelief...I dunno.
Anglophile92
I do remember the word "Slut" being used in HBP. I have the American Version. When I read this I was a bit shocked. I know that there are many readers ranging from children to adults, but i was shocked. It's kind of hard to explain. Also, the Uranus joke made me crack up! That Ron! As for the ejaculation bit I did not laugh, I was more confused actually. I too wondered how you could verbally ejaculate. tongue.gif
Sophsicle
verbal ejaculation is like blurting something out....
either way you look at it, it's still nastily associated with it's other meaning, isn't it?
so slughorn blurted out 'SNAPE'. That's what it really meant.
The word 'slut' is definitely used in HBP, but I don't have my book with me so I can't quote it directly. Someone else who has the book on hand might be able to do it.
notdumbledore
In the HBP when Ron's self correcting quill is malfunctioning and Hermione is correcting it, there is this quote, " ..and Augury doesn't star with O-R-G either."

Think about it. A little bit of adult humor.

The slut is brought up when Ginny is snogging Dean. Ron says stop doing it in public I dont want people to think you are a.. and then Ginny say A what Ron? And then Harry breaks it up.
Just the Droobles
QUOTE
" ..and Augury doesn't star with O-R-G either."

It took me a few seconds, but I get it now!!! laugh.gif I never thought about it that way though.... You think JK is just bored and slips all these in for fun?

QUOTE

Yeah, I knew about that, but it isn't said in that scene. Didn't someone say it was when they were in the flashback Merope was in? I still haven't found it...let me double check... I found useless sack of muck...pointless lump...disgusting Squib, blood traitor...nope. Could anybody help me out?

[EDIT] Sorry, wrong forum
Sophsicle
It's definitely in the merope part. I don't have my book with me because I'm in the middle of moving and pretty much all my stuff is at my new place! If I had it here I'd find it.
Check in the part where Morfin is telling Marvolo about Merope's enfatuation with Tom Riddle Snr. I'm pretty sure it's in that part.

QUOTE

I can't believe I didn't get that joke until just now. I remember thinking that was odd when I read it, but it didn't click until I read it in your post just before. hehehe

[QUOTE]"I'm not putting them on," said old Archie in indignation. "I like a healthy breeze 'round my privates, thanks."[QUOTE]
i thought this was absolutely hysterical. i was reading this part of the book for the first time on my way to school on the london underground. i burst out laughing. must have looked like a right pleb!!

never got the augury joke before either. i just assumed it ment that the quill spelt it ougry. funny when you look at it like that tho laugh.gif
Capricorn
Yeah, that's well spotted about O-R-G. Very good laugh.gif

Jo's humour is really half of tha books' magic isn't it!
Moviesareruininbooks
I don't think it is such a big deal putting in things as uranus in, so the kids get a good laugh. And even though she put in words like slut and a hint t o-r-gy, little kids will not know what those are, and if some one is old enough to know what it means, then its not such a big deal that it is in the books
Peyton
I found the 'slut' line

"Voldemort did not answer. Morfin was working himself into a rage again; he brandished his knife ans shouted, 'Dishonored us, she did, that little slut! And who're you, coming here and asking questions about all that? It's over innit. . . . It's over. . . .'"

From page 365 of HBP (American Version) and chapter 17; 'A Sluggish Memory' It's where Dumbledore and Harry go back into Morfin's memory when Voldemort pays him a visit. (The second visit to the house of Gaunt, After Marvalo has died.)

But haha, I never caught the Augruy thing. But the ejaculate, I, like many of you guys, wondered how to do that verbally
Just the Droobles
Hey thanks for those pages Peyton, I found it now. I was looking through the first part where we saw Merope, so that may be why I couldn't find it. I guess I just wasn't phased by it the first time. Either that or I was just zooming through so quick I wasn't really paying attention. Probably a mix of both.
Be||atrix
Also in HBP, at the beginning, when Harry and Dumbledore went to Slughorn's house and Dumbledore left Harry with Slughorn to persuade him to come back to Hogwarts, right when Dumbledore came back from the restroom, Slughorn said, "Got a sick stomach, eh Dumbledore?" or something like that. That was the first time that I thought wizards do poop. tongue.gif
cesador
well something you have to remember about these books is that they are not really meant as childrens books more of young adult to adult readers area and from what i have gathered is that america seems to be the one country really marketing this as young children and of course as the characters get older JKR has to reflect this somehow.
Just the Droobles
Lol, wizards poop too! laugh.gif
Yeah I noticed that too cesador. Obviously they aren't really reading the books too thorough;y or they would know the books needed to be placed in the young adult section. There is one bookstore we have around here that does have it in the young adult reader section, but that happens to be right next to the kiddie section. The thing is, you can't really have a book about a bunch of teenagers and not get all the things teenagers see, say and do. Being a teenager, I'm perfectly fine with it all. smile.gif
Daniel Potter
All those are hysterical! HAHAHA! As for the verbally ejaculating..I myself find it terribly disgusting. I know, I know, its a part of life, but to refer to it in HP,,whoa.

Could someone explain the Augruy thing to me please? Preferably by Pm...

yea, well up around were i live when the books come out all the librarys and such have these huge like party type things that is mainly ment for like 8 year olds and they read parts of the books and stuff and i always wondered what a librarian would do if she came across one of these lines while reading to a bunch of little kids?
El Barto
I know of two definitions for ejaculation...one doesn't really belong here mellow.gif

The other is: "To utter suddenly and passionately; exclaim." -from dictionary.com because I was too lazy to look it up in the text version...maybe that'll clear some things up...and I didn't mean in a sick way...your mind is clear... blink.gif
Peyton
I just remembered a line that really made me go 'wow.'

QUOTE
"I thought dementors guard the prisoners in Azkaban," he said cautiously. "They did," saud Fudge wearily. "But not anymore. They've deserted the prison and joined He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. I won't pretend that wasn't a blow." "But," said the Prime Minister, wirh a sense of drawing horror, "didn't you tell be they're the creatures that drain hope and happiness out of people?" "That;s right. And they're breeding That's what's causing all this mist."

I had a bad mental pciture while reading it. How exactly do dementors breed?
El Barto
Without going into too much detail, maybe its quick...you know...for the sake of procreation and not pleasure...

With that in mind, maybe its like a squid...or octopuss...or something else...where (I think this is right) have the...not sure if I can write it...lets just call it X...the males (if one can tell them apart) has X on the outside of their bodies and sort of transfer it to the females somehow huh.gif ...Maybe it could also be like spores or something.
Just the Droobles
I'm not sure I really wanna know how they do that... blink.gif
And it causes mist? Maybe it is spores or something...

Had anyone put anything in here about the Weasleys discussion about Fred's left buttock? I'm not really sure I want to know how Fred's buttocks are doing, but it was funny nonetheless...
Capricorn
*hem hem* the dementor thing was just waaay to graphic to try to get to the bottom of. The mist... Titanic with Kate and Leo... blink.gif Ok, I'm stopping now.

Fred's left buttock was hilarious! I'm laughing while I type - it was so brilliant, cause it wouldn't have worked in the first book for instance. You have to know the twins really well to fully appreciate Fred's tone of voice and everything!

Aaah happy.gif , that's why I keep reading the books - it's genuinely funny, not just one-liners that you laugh at only the first time.
Be||atrix
Also, in the Planet Room in the Ministry of Magic in Order of the Phoenix, while Ron is unstoppably gigglish, he keeps saying, "I saw URANUS up close, Harry! HAHAHAHAH!!! I saw Uranus up close!"

I actually imagined Rupert in that scene and Daniel Radcliffe bending and you know, Uranus. shutup.gif
thesolitaryone
I'm thinking...about the whole dementor thing...

Maybe they are asexual (meaning they dont need a partner to breed). In any of the books, have you actually read a character referring to it's gender? To my memoryl....they are always "it".
HermioneClone
Hehe. I too liked the "Uranus" part with Ron and Lavender. If anyone hasn't said it yet, the time "slut" was used was when Morfin was calling Merope that when he was explaining that she ran off with Tom Riddle Sr.
When JKR wrote that Slughorn ejaculated she was saying that he blurted something out, I think. I don't think the meaning was bad or anything, the way she used it.
I really haven't found anything JKR says shocking or offensive. The Archie part in GoF was hilarious!
Hmm. . .Dementors. . .I have no idea how they breed. I wondered that as I was reading that part. . .I suppose it's anyone's guess, I'm not quite sure JKR will go into depth about that in the future. . . wink.gif
Titania
Hehe, don't quote me on this but I loved:

"Harry Potter was rapidly becoming obsessed with Draco Malfoy" or something like that.

It fuels the Harry/Draco believers quench for evidence ohsomuchly. tongue.gif
fjkrs
Haha, these are great!

Alright I remember reading GOF the breeze bit I was at a friends house and laughed hysterically and she asked what was so funny, so I read it aloud to her and she didnt find it quite so amusing, I suppose it's a HP thing.
And the Uranus thing was a good bit too. Hehe that is just such a Ron line!
Now the Harry Potter becoming obsessed with Draco, I remeber that! I giggled :shame: hehehe yes I giggled. Now the dementor thing with the mist...HAHA never even thought of that.
Although in er...HP #5 there was a bit about Grimald Place having things in it that were breeding and I remeber getting the shivers from that.
I don't think I caught the ejaculating part where Ron said it but I do remeber laughing and trying to take a bite of taco when I read slughorn say it biggrin.gif
Yes Jk, has quite a sense of humor. I do believe I should reread the books and keep a list of these when Im not quite so lazy biggrin.gif
Just the Droobles
OK, guys and gals, I've found the solution to the dementors.

Dementors don't actually breed like animals would. In an interview with Vancouver junior journalists in 2000, Jo said that dementors don't breed, but "grow like fungus where there is decay." Sounds pretty creepy to me. Just think: anywhere where it is dark and moldy, a dementor could spring up. That's why it's foggy because of spores or something. So we were probably right about the asexual breeding and what not.

Thought you all could've used that helpful bit of info. smile.gif
accio_amanda
I remember the first time I read the Archie part in GoF.
laugh.gif I was in class, and I finished my test ahead of time so I was reading while I waited for everybody else to finish. So of course I had to read that part when the classroom was dead quiet, and I burst out laughing. It was a little embarrasing, but mostly funny, because when I tried to explain what I was laughing about nobody else seemed to grasp what I was saying.

Yes Morfin definately does call Merope a slut in the UK version just had to look it up. It's on page 342 if anyones interested.

I was shocked when I read: 'Not my girl,you ****!' (Molly,DH) blink.gif
No.1_HarryPotterFan
I was surprised about that too, but I think that any child who would really be offended by that, or don't hear it almost every day, wouldn't be able to read DH, so I don't find that a big deal. I was also not shocked by the word **** in HBP because it wasn't a good character saying that; it was one of the mean dudes. So I don't think those were inappropriate or anything.

Oh, and by the way, I just got the O-R-G-Y thing. I didn't get it the first time I read it.
Lauren0891
Yes, I was surprised by Molly Weasley's outburst but I suppose she'd just lost a son and she thought her daughter was a goner too so I can see why she would say that.

There have been some minor 'profanities' in the books, I didn't think that 'Morfin's word' was too bad, and there are often mentions of Ron making rude gestures. Ron also says in PoA something likie 'I'm not taking anymore cr*p from Malfoy this year' or something along those lines. (I don't have the book so it is not a direct quote.) I was kinda surprised by that, but I was rather young when I first read PoA.But again I suppose, teenagers use that kinda language (being one, I can relate wink.gif )

The O-R-G thing was very funny! I got that when I first read it and I thought it was hilarious! biggrin.gif
xForeverxLoyalxToxDumbledorex
In GoF the healthy breeze around his private parts something i never would have thought would be in the book but made me laugh sooo much
And in DH there was a lot of swearing whihc i would never have thought JK would use but i liked it because it added to the whole darker book and coming to an end and it was brilliant
PLUS
mrs weasleys famous line at the end.... you all know what im talking about!
oh my god!
i was so shocked by that but all the same i was like yes
we finally get to see molly kicking some butt!
Sofia_Snape
Alot of the quotes are only funny when you infer ALOT ie- double entendres. Me and my friend have found masses of them

For example

"Harry felt Voldemort before he saw him"

and

"filthy, dishevelled, Winky peered around Snape's legs"

also JKR uses the words 'straightened' and 'emerged' a LOT!
gryffindorgirlie
I'm reading HPB for the dozenth time and noticed this:

Page 206.
QUOTE
Oh come on Harry,' said Hermione, suddenly impatient. 'It's not Quidditch that's popular, it's you! You've never been more interesting, and frankly you've never been more fanciable!' Ron gagged on a large piece of Kipper.

Frankly, I think this line should of been made illeagal. Come, on JK. I know you want to keep us in suspense, but seriously, this is taking it too far! Then in the next chapter, she's saying how Hermione Confunded McLaggen, just to get Ron the job of keeper. See my point. And Ron is more handsome than Harry! But good choice in the end Hermione!

Was that a spoiler? I dunno, i put it in spoiler tags incase.

Quite a few things from DH i didn't expect JKR to say, but as the readers grow with the books, i'd say they were ok.

O-R-G ... *sniggers* happy.gif
lozza-cm

Alright, can someone PLEASE answer my question? Or do I have to read the entire series before I planned on doing so originally?

The whole 'O-R-G' thing. Yes, I get the joke. But where's it from? What book? What chapter? What character or whatever? blink.gif I'm SO confused!
