We learned in the Half-blood Prince there is a potion that can be revealing to what attracts you the most.
"Quite right! You recognized it, I suppose, by its distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen?"
"And the steam rising in characteristic spirals," said Hermione enthusiastically, "and it's supposed to smell differently to each of us, and I can smell freshly mown grass and new parchment and--"
But she turned slightly pink and did not complete the sentence.
What would yours smell like?
(I hope there isn't a topic like this already. I checked in this forum only, so....)

Cologne of the guy I like, I guess. Coffee, and the smell of petrol when it rains. I don't know if you get my meaning - that early morning traffic smell after a rainy night. It reminds me of Amsterdam, where I spent six of the best months of my life when I was 8. I'm actually from South Africa, so living in Europe was quite an experience for me.
Sorry, too much info I think, but it's that kind of topic!

Definetley chocolate, more specifically dark chocolate, I love it!
However, I too like the smell of fresh grass and new paper...
...and most importantly, the smell of cheese!! There are so many good types of cheese, each with their own unique smell!

The smell of the Manx countryside, the smell of the Irish Sea and the smell of a Manx summer morning.....bliss!
(Manx is the adjective for something from the Isle of Man which is where I'm from)

Hmmm, definitely the smell of summer. Cool nights with a small with the sweet midwest summer breeze. MmMmM, doesn't get much better than that. Reminds me also of the smell of sand (cause I play sand volleyball a bit in the summers) and the smell of the lake ( I loooove jet-skiing and sea-dooing)

Mine would be a freshly mown lawn, rain on pavement, Bulgari (ladies, you have to smell this stuff on a guy!), and the pages in a book. I love to flip through books just to smell the fresh pages. And the older books have a great, well-read smell to them too. And freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies.
Do all of these things mix together? Hmm. . .that might take the pleasantness out of this potion! I guess you can smell them each individually. Here's hoping, anyways!

Mar 1 2006, 01:46 PM
all mixed up? ohhhhh...i think that would be horrible! lol
i also love the smell of a new book!
and i think i would also smell spring! i like it, when it's becoming warm and everything's green again!
i love it too, when it has been raining in summer! or a strong wind, when you can just smell that it's summer
harry also smelled ginny's scent, didn't he? and hermione stopped to tell them about what she smells, maybe it would have been ron?
so who's scent would i smell?

lol

Hmmm what would I smell? I think the three things for me would be the smell of a football field after it's been played on - kind of a mixture of grass and mud and sweaty boys

... it may not sound pleasant but I've been a cheerleader for 8 years so I've grown accustomed. My second thing would have to be either freshly baked chocolate chip cookies or freshly baked banana bread.. I love food and both of those things smell sooo good when they've just been made

. The third thing I would smell would probably be a mixture of Axe cologne and Head&Shoulders shampoo... it's what my bf uses and I love him to bits

! So there's what I would smell... well atleast what I think I would smell! Ciao for now!

Soccer socks?!?!? I play soccer and I know those don't smell good! Especially my brother's!

!
I like the smell of new books and chocolate, those are always good. What exactly would you smell of a person you liked if they didn't really wear cologne (or perfume)? In a way I kind of wish this stuff existed so I could see what I'd smell. Hmm...I'd probably smell my band room. There's a particular smell about a band room, especially during marching season. Lots of people in one room on a hot day in wool band uniforms...just imagine that...well, the smell may not be good, but band is. And I also might smell vanilla or something. I love vanilla scents. Good stuff.

Heh... I like this thread...

My Amortentia would have the smell of old books (I am particularly attracted to Nancy Drew #14: The Whispering Statue and my French-to-English dictionary... not that I'm weird or anything

)... probably Mrs. Pastures horse cookies (again, fear not, I
am in fact a relatively normal person)... and the scent of the air right before a thunderstorm.
Definitely would
not smell anything like the high school cafeteria.

I think mine would smell like whatever Dan smells like...
And also McDonald's or Smarties.
And lastly the smell in the air just before you play anetball match. It's difficult to explain, but it's just that sport feeling, you know?
Harry is mine
Mar 11 2006, 10:42 PM
The smell of a new book, the smell before and after it rains, and Dan's cologne (if he wears any

)

I'd smell...
Chlorine, I basically live in the pool, I love swimteam, and all that good stuff.....chlorine is my perfume. I love the smell of just opened books and magazines, cologne and the smell when it's really cold, or right before its about to snow. Andmost definitely dried pineapple, and dried mango. Mmmm! It would also smell like when it rains, but just a certain kind of rain the kind that smells green. And lastly, it would smell like goldfish. I am addicted to goldfish. (The crunchy, savory snack, not the squishy, scary thing that lives in a bowl!)

I think mine would be pretty specific:
The smell of my kids in fresh pajamas after their bath when I read to them before bedtime
The smell of the cold, crisp, air as I skate onto the ice
The smell of my wife's perfume (Angel) on her neck...
And that of the leather of my favourite old jacket...

Mar 16 2006, 03:58 PM
Definitely the smell of white chocolate. I can eat a whole package of it in one time.
The smell of horses and stable.
The smell of forest in winter, when it's frost and sun's shining.
OK, not very special, but I just had to write them.

The smells I love that would be in my Amortensia would be. . .the smell of rain, chocolate, perfume, shampoo, grass, horses, that new-book smell, and puppy breath(I know that sounds weird but I love how very young puppies' breath is so pure and fresh like a baby's-before they grow up and start eating regular food)!

Hmmm..Curious question. Good observance though.
Mine would probably be... the smell after a spring rain, freshly mown grass, dark chocolate, roses, the smell of new leather, an old musty book or library. *smells in* Ahhhh.
*Quidditch Princess*
Mar 18 2006, 04:52 AM
Ok, let's see...my amortentia would smell like fresh ripe strawberries, warm cookies, a new book, new snow, a beautiful blooming rose on a warm spring morning, fresh peaches, a new computer, a grand piano, an electric guitar, a garden on a summer's afternoon, clothes, my collection of beanie babies , and someone...that's it.
Hey, that's just me! I know some are like so obvious but that's who i am. I hate chocolate, yes I know I am pretty + weird...

Mar 18 2006, 03:43 PM
I would smell books, old and new, and lavender and freshly mown grass. And my violin. And a pencil, right after it is sharpened. And the kind of smoky, dusty smell that's at my grandparents' house.

Wow...I didn't know how much you could get to know a person by their Amortentia.

Pretty cool thread!
Hm, mine would probably be the smell of an old library. You know when you're walking down the rows can just smell this dusty sort of undisturbed scent that wants to make you curl up with a book. Very lovely...
Lavender is one of my all-time favorites, I live off my lavender lotion. When I was little my mom gave me a tiny bottle of it, and now whenever I smell that scent it puts me right to sleep.
An then there's the scent of peeled oranges. It's a very clean, bright smell. I love just peeling an orange and eating it then have the smell of it all over my hands.
Then there's the smell of my grandpapa... It's sort of spicy and clean, just love hugging him to catch a whiff of it.
I noticed several of yall said grass...I hate the smell of grass at anytime, mown or unmowned.

Especially in the summer when it's a sticky smell and it clings to you... But every nose is different!
Pretty interesting topic!

Hmm...Interesting question...I'm really not sure! Maybe the smell of fear, or power, or blood, or death?
My amortentia would smell like peanut butter, cinnamon, burning leaves, a campfire, my favorite grapefruit shampoo, and orange soda. I don't really like anyone--except for Gerry Butler, of course, but I don't know what he smells like, so I honestly couldn't say anything else.

hehe....this is actually quite a difficult question.
There are so many smells that I love. My amortentia would probably smell like chocolate cake, the smell of outside, the smell of my pillow, the smell of your car after you get a car wash, and the smell of my home. Those are really my favorite smells....
As for Voldemort's amortentia, I would say the smell of death beneath him, the smell of his own power (if that is possible?

), the smell of unicorn blood, and the smell of others' defeat. I wonder if he can even smell with those two slits on his face that he calls a nose

....

Hmm, interesting question. I guess I'd probably smell summer storms and stir-fry and the fruity gum my boyfriend always has. It's interesting that amortentia is linked to smell because smell is pretty well linked to memory. I guess we like smells that remind us of happy times

hey aubrey! i haven`t talked to you for quite a while. losing touch. =[
anywho.. just thought i`d drop by and give a thought or two on this amortentia.
since it smells of the things we love on the inside.. isn`t it interesting that it has a language root, in like french or italian or spanish or something.. amor? amo? haha. most of you probably already figured that out.. just thought i`d add it.
i think mines would have to smell like... spearmint. and if we were talking modern times also axe: orion. you know.. the body spray for men.. axe? the specific one.. orion.
axe orion, and spearmint combined is the best smell in the world. =]

The smell right after it rains, it smells like the earth is cleansed of all impurity. The smell of this one perfume called American Girl Truly Me, this one cologne called jovan musk for men, the smell of flan (mmmmmmmm)*drools*. the smell of brand new pencils, the smell of sharpies, gasoline (you may think it stinks, but I love it)....

I like... I love the chocolate, even the same as the person I like, and also she likes chocolate...
I think it would smell chocolate because it's a contagious smell (without mentioning its tasty flavor) and almost everyone likes it...
Also, I can say it would smell as vanilla or cherries...
All those smells are my favorite among all and everyone of the things I have eaten or smelled...

I think like most people (including Hermione) freshly mown grass would definately be one, i love that smell.
Fresly laundered sheets, you know when you're all snuggled up fresh from the shower and you're all cosy, i love that smell.
The smell of PoA, or any of the Harry Potter books, the british ones at least have a very distictive smell, especially my copy of PoA (i think it may just be mine) but it always reminds me of Lupin.... ok, that's just sad

Essence of Division, I know that smell, the horses neck, it's strangely pleasent isn't it?

My Amortentia would scent of the beautiful river I live near, that salty and fresh smell as well as of the air after there is a thunder storm. I love the smell of yummy food cooking(!

) as well as gardenia and jasmine flowers. This may sound weird, but I really like the smell of moth balls, it reminds me of my grandmother's house lol as well as the smell of puppies - when my neighbours got their dog it smelled like milk, it was so adorable

! I also agree with kool kat; the smell of the crisp air and damp leaves in Autumn.
Tigers Eye

Mine would be fresh fruit, the smell in the air when spring is turning into summer, the ocean spray by a rocky beach in winter and the smell of the woods all year round.

Ah I like this topic, but its kinda hard.
Ygraine, I agree I love the smell of the Harry Potter books! I remember whenever the latest one came out I would breath in the smell first before I read it
I like the smell of my boyfriend's skin, simple and sweet.
I like the smell of London underground. I know it can stink but for some reason that moist, warm smell is reasuring to me.
I like the smell of chocolate. I like the smell of herbal essances. And of the sea. And this weird musky smell that I smelled when I was like 7 and went on the ET ride in Florida.. weird that I remember that but I do.Christmas! I love the smell of christmas. Hmm I'm getting too into this lol. I think I could write for pages.
