Below is some of the most frequently asked questions we get from reviewers. It's a good idea to have a look through them because there are some great tips on the sort of feedback authors like. They will be added to as new questions arise.

1) How can I leave a feedback?
You can find the link at the beginning or the end of the Fanfic post you have read. Click on that and it’ll take you straight to the appropriate feedback thread.

2) I have read a very well written Fanfic and I’d like to show my appreciation for the effort. Do you have tips on what I should write?
One of the things that make authors smile is the feedback from their readers. Here’s some tips on what a review might include:

- Quote a particularly funny, exciting, well written, or just a part that you really enjoyed- Congratulation them are writing a wonderful part. It gives them a pat on the back and encouragement to continue.

- Ask questions and predict what will happen- I can't promise that anyone will answer any questions or use what you predict but it gets your brain working. Asking questions can not only clear up your view but also help the writer make sure everything is clear and understandable to an outside reader.

- Point out any mistakes- Grammatical, spelling errors and mistakes that just don't fit in with our knowledge from JK and from previous parts in the story. But do it politely. No one is perfect and people do mistakes from time to time. They would edit their chapters if you point them out politely.

3) Is it true that you are allowed to double-post in feedback thread?
Yes, you do. But you need to make sure that 24-hours had passed after your first post to post another one. Please read HERE for more information on that.

4) A Fanfic I read hasn’t been updated for some time and I was the last person to post in the feedback thread. Would it be okay to post another asking for update?
Double-posting is allowed in feedback thread if it has been 24 hours from the previous one. However, I don't think there's any need to post again to prompt the author into replying, even if it has been several weeks. The best course of action I would suggest is that you PM or e-mail the author and wait for a response.

5) How can I volunteer as a beta?
You can volunteer by going to this threadHERE and post a reply in there.

Hi! I have a question regarding feedback.

What exactly is a 'flame?' Is it simply a criticism such as "Your fanfic sucks and so do you!" ? With no helpful information, just a 'diss?' Or is there more to it?

My trouble is, I have a critic on another site who is causing me to fret and worry--she finds fault with things frequently and can write paragraphs telling me what is wrong with my fic, but if she can't find anything to find fault with in another chapter, her replies sound almost petulant, as if she was bummed out. I'll get something like "Interesting backstory." One or two lines at most, like she begrudges me the breath. I can block her reviews if I want to, but that seems so childish...I hate the way she seems to bring out the worst in me, but is what she's doing really flaming? Or just being overly critical? What is a true flame?

Thanks!

A most difficult question to answer. Criticism of your writing can be difficult to take for some people. At what point does constructive criticism become abusive criticism?

I would say if the person is only providing negative comments and not offering anything constructive with their comments, it would be flaming. Many times, you can learn more from the negative comments but they have to come along with something helpful. Negative comments now and then I would overlook but not if it was continual and not offering anything constructive.

If it was something here on VTM I would look at it and give my opinion. If you PM me the comments, I will give you my honest opinion?

Hi Greg and Darcy! Hope you guys are doing well smile.gif

As I understand it, "flaming" means a comment that is posted with the deliberate intent of provoking an emotionally negative response. In other words - someone who is obviously trying to invoke your wrath, or just plain upset you. If you think its happening, its worth reporting, (espescially if it *is* having that effect) then the staff at the site can look into it. Hope that helps. tongue.gif

hey, i don't want to sound silly and if there is a thread somewhere that tells me then i will, but i can't find anywhere that tells me how to linke to my fanfic and feedback threads in my signature and i really want to! please help

Hi i am currently writing a fanfic and i dont know how to put a feedback link onto my story. So if you could please let me know how to do that it would be very helpful. thanks

What you'll want to do is start the thread here in the feedback section, then open a second window to your story. Go back to the window that holds your feedback thread. Click above in the white rectangle which holds the URL address for your story--it begins with 'http.' When you click on that, it will turn blue, and then what you want to do is press the keys 'Ctrl' and 'C'. Click on 'Ctrl' first, and then while still holding that key down, click on 'C.' That will copy your URL address.

Your computer will keep that in memory, so go to your fanfic thread window again. Click on "edit." It will ask what type of edit--click on "full edit." At the bottom of your chapter, type in a little message, such as 'feedback can be left'--and then when you want to type in 'here,' as in 'feedback can be left here', what you want to do is click on that little icon above the message box that looks like a globe with a paper clip on it. A little window will come up, with a rectangular box in it. Click on the little box, then click on 'Ctrl', then 'V' --holding the 'Ctrl' key down the whole time. The URL address for your feedback thread, the one you copied, will appear in the box. Click 'OK.' A second little rectangle will appear, in which you will type in 'here.' Then click 'OK' again. It will put the URL for your feedback thread in your message so that when you complete your edit, the link will appear as the word 'here,' highlighted in red.

There are two ways writers tend to do their feedback link. Some like to provide the link at the end of every chapter. Some find it easier to put the link in their signature instead--that way they don't have to end it at the end of every chapter, but simply guide their readers to the link in their signature when they end a chapter. It's totally up to you how you want to do it.

Hope that helps! smile.gif

I have a question: If you are planning to write a fan fiction in a week or so when you have an idea, can you make the feedback thread ahead of time saying **Coming Soon**, or would you have to wait until the actual fan fiction has been posted
