the weasley family has a cat?

in CoS the movie, when harry and them first arrive at the burrow, ginny comes downstairs and asks:

"Mummy have you seen my jumper?"

And Mrs. Weasley replied "Yes dear, it's on the cat!"

just thought it was interesting, cause i never really noticed before. my sister pointed the fact out to me yesterday actually...

we were talking about which pet was our favorite, and she was listing them off...and she said "what about the weasley's cat?" and i'm like, "the weasley's don't have a cat!" and she's says "yeah they do, remember in the movie..." and then i was like, oh my god lol. yeah.
Grade 6
I never really noticed it.

I was just in the thread where they were talking about what Ginny's Patronus would look like. Someone said it would be a cat because in the Chamber of Secrets, Ron said "Ginny's a cat person". Now that you mention it, I remember Mrs. Weasley saying that for some reason. But Rowling never mentions it much, or gives the cat a name (does she?).
severely_severus
Nope, she never gave the cat a name or mentioned it again even... not that I remember anyway. That's why I found it so peculiar, and why I made this topic... I'd always heard Molly way that, though it never occured to me that they actually had a cat.

Quite interesting really, makes you wonder if there's any more to it... or if its just a cute movie thing. Since Ginny likes cats I figure there *might* be... but I also think it could just be one of those things that doesn't really matter in the end, cause you'd figure it'd be mentioned again by now.

But now that I think about it, there is a little bit of a thing with cats... Mrs. Figg loved them, then there was Mrs Norris and Filch, Hermione and Crookshanks, and now Ginny's a cat person lol. (and her cat wears a jumper!) lmao. Very odd indeed.

I noticed it, and I think it's downright funny. Ginny, because she's a cat person, should probably not like a jumper being on the cat. That's just mean to cats. CATS RULE!
MimolaChuck
i noticed it when i first saw the movie.
i thought it was absolutely hilarious.
no one else in the theatre was laughing and people asked why.
i had to recite it for them
"mum, mummy, have you seen my jumper?"
"yes dear it was on the cat"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Padfoot4Ever
Yea I noticed. Maybe her patronus is a cat. She does do catlike things. It's not like that in the book though. In the book they don't have a cat. Maybe it is one of those clues to future books. I know that was PoA but Jk might have put one or two in CoS because she already knew.
astronomylover
Yeah, it OotP, it mentions her curled up catlike on the chair, her eyes reflecting the firelight. Maybe her Patronus will be a cat, like Padfoot4ever said.
BellatrixBlack
Wow I never even thought of that, cool. Never did know the Weasleys to have a cat.

i dont think they meant a live cat
zyra123
Did you guys notice in the Quidditch World Cup scene, the tent that they use while waiting for the game to start smell of cat ?

QUOTE
Harry bent down, ducked under the tent flap...

...

Oddly enough, it was furnished in the same sort of style as Mrs Figg's; there were chocheted covers on the mismatched chairs, and a strong smell of cats.

Is it to show the fact that the Weasley's actually own a cat? Or is it to give away hint that Mrs Figg somehow belong in the wizarding world (where we learn in OotP, that she's a squib...) and the Weasley's are borrowing the tent from her?

What do you reckon?
Amyrat151
Maybe it's a stray, like it comes around their house but they don't actualy own it.
Lynn
hey Rg's babe, if it's not a living cat. what else then, I'm curious now. tongue.gif
a dead one ohmy.gif ??
RG's Babe
no like a "magic" thing resembling a cat or a statue
ginnywitch
I never really thought about it that much to tell the truth but now that its mentioned they could have a cat. huh.gif
kreacher_the_house_elf
Ginny is often described as being cat like.

In OotP ~when Mr Weasley was attacked. Ginny was described as curled up like a cat!

I can't quote it because my books are still confiscated and well thats not good.

But I definately know that there are more cat like and Ginny references.
joeshmoe1228
I think the cat is alive. Why else would they stick it in the movie? It seems as if Ginny would be a "cat person" as Ron said.

Ginny and Hermione but love cats. I guess that's what the girls like in this book. Even mean Millicent Bulstrode has a cat. Maybe it's the latest fashion/fancy.
Naz
well even if she is linked with cats, what is going to happen? maybe in the future she will learn to turn into a cat
Lynn
that would be awesome biggrin.gif
kreacher_the_house_elf
I don't know how Ginny being described as a cat could really be influential. Perhaps her patronus is a cat? I don't really know.
Dragon*Magic
I just want to say that it doesn't mean anything to the books, someone said that they just added it for humour.
It would make sense if it was not a live cat, because Mrs. Weasley said 'Yes dear, it's on the cat.' How would Ginny know, if the cat was alive, where the cat was? Also, what cat would just sit/lay/stand there with a jumper on it?
RG's Babe
Everyone i meant what Dragon*Magic said. the cat cant have a jumper on it really. laugh.gif lol i cant believe that i didnt say what i meant.
ibeehoneyduked
laugh.gif That's really weird. I new they had a cat but I didn't. When they said that in the movie I didn't really think about it.
tinky(bell)witch
Yeah never really noticed, until my friend pointed out 2 weeks ago.
There was a cat on the fireplace(can be seen on widescreen).
But she was like why is it there.
I was like remember what Mrs.Weasley said"Yes dear it was on the cat"(after Ginny ask about her jumper*sweater*)
Agent0042
I think I remember seeing this mentioned on another forum, or maybe it was this forum before I joined and I just forgot. Anyway, yeah, very interesting little thing they threw in there. If I have a chance, I'm gonna try watching the widescreen myself. Of course, we know Ginny is friendly with Crookshanks, although she totally snubbed him for that pygmy puff in Book Six --- ouch.

I've heard a rumour floating around that Ginny is an animagus and can turn into a cat. Because she sometimes is 'curled up like a cat'. Could it be true? Could Ginny be an animagus? I don't think so, for one she's hardly old enough.
The One
Your born with the animagus ability (Except for the Marauders who learned it) so there really isnt a too young or too old
LilyPotter
Maybe it's a statue of a cat? Or a carving of some sort? i don't think they have a cat...
tuni
Well i also noticed that when i saw the movie second time, but i thought that it was my mistake in hearing this.
Dumbledore2009
i didnt notice or hear about a cat in it!! huh.gif
wierd.

Slay
Now that I think of it, there is something about cats: dry.gif

SS/PS: professor McGonagall is a cat animagus

CoS: Ms. Norris, Filch's cat

PoA: Crookshanks, Hermione's cat

Oh well, they're probably just a coincidence... laugh.gif
Dani Kat
I get what you mean slay, I think they're tryin to do that old ''tradition' 'were they
always asociated witches and wizards with cats.
It's fine exept it"s gettin borin now.

and i always thought the weasly's had owls, a rat and and goul.?
padfoot1243
i never notced that like never
D.A
When she said it in the movie i was like huh?
But i dont think they would have stuck anything in the movie which was of importance in later books if JK hadnt written it in the books herself
I think they added it for a bit of comedy happy.gif

gryffindorgirlie
I thought (in the movie) she says it's on the bed. maybe a trick of the sound though. I can't really imagine them looking after a cat. And why would a jumper be on the cat in the first place? To keep it warm?
cloe101
i'm with gryffindorgirlie. I think it was just put in the movies for a laugh. There would be no reason to have a jumper on a cat. Unless the cat was hairless or something. If i am not mistaken a cat was never mentioned in the books with the weasleys. And didn't ron have a rat so why would they keep a cat ? i don't think they had a cat it was just put in the movies as a filler.
~Inkweaver~
IMO, Mrs. Weasley wasn't talking about a real live cat. something "on the cat" could mean something like "its on the clothes line" for us in the U.S., not a reference to Ginny being "catlike".
Also, nowhere in COS dose not talk about a cat. in fact, in the beginning of Chapter 3: the Burrow, The scene with Ginny in the morning is vary short. all it said is:

QUOTE
At that moment there was a diversion in the form of a small, redheaded figure in a long nightdress, who appeared in the kitchen, gave a squeal, and ran out again. (COS chp 3, page 35)

I never got the impression that the Weasleys had a cat, at least from the books. Crookshankswas the only cat ever mentioned as being anywhere near the Burrow as far as I can remember. Ok so half a cat since he is half Kneazle.
honey~pie
Hmm I've never really given it much thought. I'm with griffindorgirlie and cloe101, it was just addedfor some comedy.
