I first heard about Harry Potter in 1999. I was student teaching at a primary school in northern England, and a Year 5 asked me if Harry Potter was popular in the States. I was embarrassed to have no clue what he was talking about (and I know a little about children's literature.) Anyway, he asked me to send him an "American" copy of a book when I got home, and I sent him SS. I then bought a copy for myself, which I shelved with the idea of reading later. Life got busy, I got a job, and bought the hardcover of GoF with Scholastic bonus points. Still, I hadn't read SS. Then I saw the first movie and thought "hey, I'm missing out on something here." I devoured the first book, and promptly went to the store for CoS. Since then, I've been there for every movie and gotten the books on their release dates, etc. Good stories are not limited by age, and JKR has certainly woven a fantastic world for readers of all ages!

Well, my brother started to get interested in them before that I did. So he showed them to me and was reluctant to read them until I heard the movie was coming out. So I set myself to finish the first 4 (which was the ones that had come out at the time) before the movie came out, so I did and been addicted ever since. My brother got them from my mother who thought they would be nice, being about a boy who's a wizard and all.

Not very impressive is it?
But I guess every story counts

I heard that a new book was coming out called harry potter and the SS. i read previews and reviews and thought i should get the book since it sounded good. i read it and i was fascinated by the book. i was brought to the world of jkr and harry potter. i then was very intrigued and wanted more. i discovered harry potter by myself and helped others soon after discover the harry potter books and movies.

Ahh, I remember it like it was yesterday... -reminiscient- I first heard about Harry Potter in 1st grade, almost everyone in my class was reading it. Well, we were all six so I doubt they could understand half what they read, but they loved it anyway. However I, being youthfully ignorant and rebellious, decided that if everyone else liked it, I was going to hate it. So for several years I had a very good time hating "that Hairy Pateh, or whatever he's called". I didn't really like to read back then, and even when it became a beloved hobby of mine, I steered clear of Harry.

Then, one fateful day many years ago, I was bored and searching for fresh reading material. So I did what I usually did: raided my older brother's bookshelf. There, squashed between a mangled copy of Eragon and the Animorphs Series, was a faded copy of The Sorcerer's Stone he'd bought an a yard sale for 75 cents. I read the 'About the Author' part first (I always do that, for some reason) and thought writing a story of a napkin was very intriuging. I read the book. I loved the book. A new me was born as if from a Phoenix's ashes.

Even then, though, I wasn't a Harry Potter nut. After publicly hating it for so many years, I didn't want to see everyone's 'I told you you'd like it' looks. I became a very quiet Harry Potter fan, waiting until the newest book came out in libraries, rather then pre-ordering it like everyone else. I always had at least one Harry Potter Freak friend, though, one that was beyong obsessed, that would hold long, one-sided conversations theorizing about the books to me -- or anyone, for that matter. And slowly, over time, I was converted, becoming more and more insanly and emotionally attached to Harry (although -- now that I think of it -- maybe it was horomones --) until I became what I am today: A overly obsessed lover of far-fetched HP theories who has read the books dozens of times over and spends great chunks of her free time on a website talking to other Harry Potter freaks miles and miles away.

But what can I say?
I LOVE YOU HARRY!

i remember when i was in 4th or 5th grade, some people said the first few books were really good, so i decided to read them.... i thought they were pretty good, but i didn't really make anything of it... it was just another book that i read... when the 5th book was about to come out, though... i started to get a little more interested... i knew the title before the book came out and i got the book on the first day... then the 3rd movie came out and i was in charge of planning the movie get-together with my friends... by that time i discovered mugglenet and then veritaserum and started going on hp fansites everyday.... and then my obsession grew and grew and now i'm pretty much obsessed (probably not as much as some other people... but a lot more than just the regular hp fan)... i'm counting down the days until the 5th movie and 7th book (although we don't know the date yet!)...

darklord1231
Way back when the first one just came out... read it with my family and have been a "potthead" ever since! Now, personally, I like S.P.E.W.

I was 9 years old when my mom first pointed out "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone" at a local bookstore and said, "That looks interesting, how about you read it?" I read the inside cover and the whole plot seemed so weird and I said that I would never read it (especially since my mom was the one wanting me to read it.) A couple months later it was all over the news, so I decided to read it finally. Now, 8 years later, I've read each book several times and am now reading them in Spanish (my second language). After His Dark Materials, they are my favorite series ever.

I got hooked on Harry Potter the first day I read it. which was about a week after it came out for the first time. I've been a die-hard fan ever since that fateful day...but the person who hooked me was my dad. He said that it looked interesting, and that one of his friends had read it and liked it. So, I got a copy, and I haven't stopped reading them since. I don't know how many times I've re-read them...I lost count three years ago... tongue.gif

I got into Harry Potter right before the first movie was released. Up until then I thought that it was just an oversized children's book. But the trailer for the movie looked so good I knew that I would go and see it. I had to read the book...I have a rule that if the movie is based on a book than you should ALWAYS read the book first.
HP_RULES!
My Dad got me the first book so I was reluctant to read it since he never picks out books that I like, but I decided to read it anyway about a week or two after it came out. Once I started I just couldn't stop! I didn't actually become completely obsessed until about the 3rd or 4th book, but I liked them a lot before that point! It wasn't the movies that got me hooked, it was the books!

OK so here's what happened:
The book came out and my grandma heard about it and said it didn't sound good. Then parents started going crazy about it being in schools and everything and just out of spite, went out and boutght it. She didn't have anything to read one time so she read Harry Potter. As she read it she told me and the rest of the family how good it was and when she got done we should all read it.
The book got passed around the whole family. Me and my sister, being the only kids, got it last and me, being the youngest, got it after her. Kayla, my sis, didn't like books that don't grab you in the first couple of sentences. Now she don't like books at all unless its a love story about around here, where we live. So a month passed and I was only 8 so I grew impatient. We (me, my mom and my grandma) checked her progress. She was on the 2nd page! I got the book. I read it in a couple of weeks. It wouldn't have taken so long now but like I said I was 8 years old! The book got me, my grandma, and my great-grandma all hooked. We waited for the 2nd book to come out. My grandma went and got it read it passed it to her mom then it was passed to me. I flew through it like I had the first, still young. Then we waited again. This went on until after the 4th book I believe. Now I use my own money and buy the books. I was given books 1-4 by a friend of my mom's but they were in bad condition so after Christmas one year I bought a set with my money.

So that's how I got hooked.

The first Harry Potter was a birthday gift for me 7 years ago. I actually started reading it before it was famous. Noone knew about it! After i read the first, i bought the second and waited anxiously for the third. After that, i bought the 4th,which i was carrying with me at school because it was amazing! I bought the 5th and the 6th in english because i couldn't wait until they were translated! Now, i'm reading the 7th.
HA! Just kiding!

I Started reading the first book when my grandmother bought it for me... I was in the 3rd grade so that was about 6 years ago. Then I just wanted more and more! I've been in love with the series ever since wub.gif
beyond_the_veil
Well i got POA for my birthday just after it was released because it was a hardback copy. I am ashamed to admit i never read it straight away blink.gif What was i thinking! I think it was after the first film was out and i saw it that i decided to read POA. i liked it so much that i got PS and COS soon afterwards, and read all three back to back.I became officially hooked biggrin.gif I then got GOF a few months after it was released and also purchased OotP and HBP. The rest they say is history!

I actually didnt like it at first either. My friend, Adriana, read the first book when it came out and liked it ever since. I read that back of it and I thought that it was THE stupidest thing I ever heard in my life. I hated it until about 1 year after the first movie came out. I kept refusing to watch it and my mom kept trying to make me watch it. But nope! uh uh! I was NOT going to watch it.

Then one day my friend, Shauna, who I did not see for a long time because we both switched to different schools, came over to sleep over. She brought the usuall stuff- cards, playstation games, computer games and a movie- Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone! Now Shauna always brought movies that I ended up liking, but I was NOT about to watch this one. She kept asking me to watch it for about half an hour. And then finally she said "If you dont watch this, I will never ome over, and never talk to you again. And thats a promise. And you know that I keep my promises." So of course, I wanted to see my Best friend again, so I agreed to watch the movie but I wouldnt like it!

So we watched the movie and I ended up... well... you know loving it! When I told Adriana this, she was so happy that I finally watched it and gave it a chance. i remember her saying "Now you can be obsessed like me!!" Adriana and I still laugh at that because she started liking it Waaaay before I did, yet I am waaaay more obsessed than she is. =P

Thats how I became interested in Harry Potter.
Fall_out_Girl

Four years ago I was at a friends house. We were doing some homework together. After 30 minutes we both arrived at the conclusion that we worked enough so we decided to watch a movie on DVD. My friend's latest acquisition was Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I heard a few things about Harry Potter before that day but not enough to convince me to read the books. So we watched the movie and I enjoyed it very much. The next day I started reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (which I finished in five days). It was then when I discovered Harry Potter. After COS I read POA and GOF. Because OOTP was not out yet I decided to read the first book too. That's my story.

Really nice topic!! I became interested and obsessed with HP after I had finished my elementary school. I remember it was just two weeks o the end of the summer holidays and I got nothing to do then. I went to my cousin for few days and there it happened. My aunt, who works in alibrary, always tries to encourage me to read a book or two which she finds quite absorbing. Then she told that HP is a fantastic choice. I'd heard about these books (first 3 pats had been released by that time) but I just didn't want to read them cause I thought they were...stupid (now I think i was stupid then tongue.gif). But finally ma aunt won and I promised I'd start reading it. Trust me or not for the next week I didn't leave my room. I was just reading and reading and reading all the time. And that's the end of the story about my beginnings.

SO i got my parents to get me one for Christmas, unfortunately they got me CoS... Man was I lost!!! And ever sence every Christmas vacacion I have endevoured to read all of the books in order. This way they all get read at least once a year. My poor CoS book is nearly falling apart...But that is Seven years of almost constant use!! Talk about a quality product....

This question is simply amazing. I started reading Harry Potter in fourth grade. My teacher read aloud to the class, and she was really excited, because she had heard really good things about this book. And I loved reading and she saw the excitement on my face, and I was hooked since the first word. Like who were these stuck up people who didnt believe in imagination? and who were the Potters? And then it just escalated from there. She would pass around the book, so that all the kids could read a part (a few pages) from the book, and my part came and Neville, Draco, Hermione and Harry were in the Forest with Hagrid for detention, and I remember not wanting to give the book to the next kid in line. I've basically been obsessed with Harry Potter since then. I'm such a dork.
turtle24
I saw the Sorcer's Stone in theaters and I just started reading the book then moved on and on and on... I'm done with all of the books.
amanda1212
As soon as the book came out. The book had so much hype to it. Advertising was big, so as soon as it came out i went right to the store. And of course felling love one the first page...
wizkid_12
it was a little while before i really got interested in harry potter. my grandma bought me the book but i was like uh this isn't gunna be very good and didn't look at it again for several months until one day i was sittin in my room bored and i saw it in my closet and thought well there's nothing else to do might as well see if its any good. read chapter 1 and was already in love with the book and didn't put it down until i finished!

I got Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone as a birthday present. It had just won the smarties book prize, so my mum thought it might be good and gave it to me. Thank God for smarties!! tongue.gif I've been into them ever since.
roxypottergirl
Believe it or not i first got interested in Harry Potter on an airplane. That is also where i first saw the first movie. tongue.gif [/color]
FawkesThePheonix
I got interested in Harry Potter from my mum. She heard about the book from the whole smarties thing too and just brought it home one day. We read it together and from then on I have always been a huge fan! magic.gif

I first watched the Harry Potter movie on Tv when ABC family played it. I was baord and nothing else was on, so I gave it a go. I thought it was ok, but was not super interested. Weeks later we picked up Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets whe the store had a deal. We bought it with another movie. I had been curious to see what happened. So we watched that and I thought it was great- it's still tied as my favorate Harry Potter movie so far with Goblet of Fire. So then I waited sooo long 'till we finally rented Harry Potter PoA.Loved it. Wanted more. Knowing the Goblet of Fire movie would not come out for some time (from this sites info) I got my brother to let me read his books. He had three and four. I read three first and then four. I loved them, thinking they were so much better than the movies. That got me hooked. Ever since I read Goblet of Fire I kept wanting more. Now I own two, five, and six (but I keep my brother's books in my room...heh). I am still serching for the first book and awaiting book seven, and movie five.

Hi People!!!
I got interested in Harry Potter when I was fifteen years old. Teens in India, where I live, are not very interested in these stories. They’ve had enough of it in their bed time stories, you know. So I had never heard of Harry Potter before.
It was a summer holiday and I had nothing to do. My friend had four of the books, which had been gifted to her by her father. She had never read them before. So I took them home and started reading. As I read the first one I got interested and then followed the next one and the next one…
J K’s style was very good so I couldn’t put them down and before long I was addicted to the books. magic.gif And I passed the addiction to my younger brother and two of my friends. One of them told me about this site. But at that time I was busy with studies, so I didn’t post anything here. Now it is another of those holidays and this time I’ve got hooked to Veritaserum. Cheers to the guys who started this site. thumbsup.gif Thank you very much. hug.gif

It was just one year ago. When i saw the trailer of GOF, i got really interested, i bought the books and the saw the all the movies.
I remember that my cousin asked my mother the first book in his birthday, this happened in 2001. I thought...what the hell is Harry Potter? And didn't really get interested enough to start reading the books...i can't believe until now LOL.
Narcissa;-
Hmm for me..I just watched the movie. Yupp i just watched it.
At first i wasn't really liking it. But then I started watching it more often.
My mom and dad won't buy me the books because they said that
i wont read it anyways..HAHAH they were wrong. They bought be the second
book then i just started reading it...then i was hooked..*snaps finger* just like that.

Whatever Hapened To Uncertainty
It was read to me in Year 6 by my teacher and since then I've been hooked.

I remember it well . . .

One day at the end of August 2002, I was at my new job with nothing to do, and was bored out of my skull, and we have a Mac at work, and the first three chapters of Goblet of Fire were (still are) on the iTunes program, so just out of curiosity I played them. With the actor Jim Dale reading I totally fell into the world of Harry Potter, and therefore had to go out and by the whole set that was available at that point, because once I "pick up a book" I can't put it down. I was extremely impressed with the thought and foresight that went into the creation of this world, and am happy I was bored that one August day. This does not mean that we should slack off at work though!

My animagus is a Thunderbird! Who would've thunk it.
Horace Slughorn
All I remember is it happened when I was much younger. I remember my parents and my brother talking all about the Harry Potter series. I felt all left out, but I knew that I did not have enough interest to read through the whole entire first novel. I thought the beginning was way to boring, and some of the words used were a bit tricky. Those were the days that I was stilled hooked on my "Magic Tree House Books" craze. tongue.gif

I decided that I should attempt to read the books. I started reading and after a bit finished the first chapter. Ah, I was so proud of myself. I of course went around bragging to everyone that I finished the FIRST CHAPTER! Then I decided to keep on reading the book. I was hooked and once I finished the first one, I moved onto the second, and then so on. I never knew I would start reading the books for a third time! smile.gif

My mom read them out loud to me and my sister when we were little. She started out by reading us books like: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, THe Ghost in the Noonday Sun, and stuff like that. She had gotten a recomendation from a friend to read the harry potter books, but it took us a couple of years to accually get started on them, but after we read the first chapter of the first book, we were hooked! biggrin.gif
Amyrat151
Horace Slughorn, I loved the Magical tree books too. I still have a bunch of them.
I saw the first movie because it was the only movie in my aunt and uncle's trailer up north. I sort of thought that the books were just a passing trend, so I was never really interested in the series before. I thought that the movie was pretty good, I wouldn't write it off as the best thing ever, but still pretty good. I didn't think about the books or movies again till CoS was on Indemand in 2003 and I realized that I really wanted to wacth it, so I order it, without my parent's permisson, but it was no big deal, and I liked it. After I wacthed it I really wanted to read the books and told my Mom that in the fall and the first one was a Christmas gift. I wasn't obessed till I read PoA, what is always the hook for me is relatable characters, and PoA is such a character-centered story, it was then that I got why people love the books, and then I loved the series too.

I was pregnant in 2003 working in a Drug Development research company with a friend who was already an addict. For my birthday in May she gifted me with Books 1-4. I think GoF had just been released, someone correct me if I am wrong. I read them straight through, and then again. When OtP was released I was dealing with somewhat of a personal crisis and could not be there for opening night, my same addict friend enabled me by purchasing Book 5 for me. I read through the series twice more before HBP came out. I was definately there for the party that night. And now I am simply biding my time for the culmination of the series.

Blessed Be Y'all,

When i was in third grade is about the time i got intersted. I had finally picked up a book and read it. I tried to read one in second grade but when i was in second grade i got distracted way to easily and couldnt read one. So in third grade i tried it again and thought it was ok....But the first movie came out and it was like love at first sight! :-D So then i read alll of the books and couldn't wait for the next books/movies to come out!!! So yeah i am like really obsessed with it now.
Potters*Angel
ok, how I got interested in harry potter was kind of odd. I was in the 1st grade and my mom told me that on November 16 next year, (my birthday) we should go see harry potter, and I'm like what the heck is Harry Potter. She gave me the 1st book and I would try to read it but at that age it was boring to me. In the 2nd grade she decided to read it with me and then I got into it and ended up reading all 4 books (that was all that was made at the time) I was dying for the movie and the next book. So I became totally obsessed, and now here I am telling you about my Harry Potter obsession. biggrin.gif

I've actually been reading the books since they came out. I read something in one of my Moms magazines about Harry Potter coming out and gave a synopsis of what Harry Potter was about. And from then on I was hooked. I kept going and getting all the books at the midnight hand outs. And then went on to see the movies at the midnight viewings. wisenod I don't think I'll ever get tired of Harry Potter personally.

I like this question!!!

I like someone else's I was reading was really into x-files when HP came out. I was sort of being let down w/ the way x-files was going, and my friends were all totally obsessed with HP at that point.

One of my friends bought me the first book for christmas in 2001. I didn't read it until March (during exam week no less, Hermione would have died!!!). I loved it. I went and rented the movie as soon as I could and I have been hooked ever since. I've actually just finished reading them all again. It took me a week but I wanted to read a little slower this time. I got really excited each time a book came out and I might have missed something before.

When I went to Spain two summers ago, i had taken the GoF with me, and actually bought the Order of Pheonix, in Spanish, while I was over there, just to tide me over!

I can't wait for the last one!! (yet i don't want it to end!)

swhitney536
I actually didn't even read the book until last summer. I never understood anyone's obsession with them before that. I mean... How great could a book about some dumb wizards be?? But then I went visit my sister in Florida and it rained the entire week I was there and I had nothing else to do while she was at work all day so she told me to read the Harry Potter books and that I would like them. I reluctantly started PS/SS, finished it in a day, and immediately started on the next one. I read all the way through the series and completed HBP all in about a week. Ever since then I've been completely hooked.
Harry&Hermione4Ever
When I first saw the movies I started to read the books.
Potter_Addict_713
I have known about the Harry Potter series since the first book can out. I tried to read it...But, I couldn't even get through the first chapter. I found it extremley boring! haha. I think it was about a year later, in 3rd grade or something when I really began to get hooked. I finished the first book in like a month, hey thats pretty good for a 3rd grader! And I read through the 3rd book. Then I would read the next book as they came out. About 1 and a half years ago was when I really began to get a thing for Harry Potter. This was when I began re-reading the book and finding out about when the other books would come out. Whan the movies began coming out, I found myself in heaven.hahaha.

a true Harry Potter lover wub.gif and proud of it.

hp_book_reader
Sadly i only got interested in harry potter when the 1st movie came out. i feel like such a bad harry potter for not finding harry potter sooner. but after the movie came out my teacher started reader the 1st harry potter book to my class and i loved it!
The Chosen 1
In the 3rd grade someone let me read the begining of SS/PS on the bus ride home from school. I went out and bought it the next day, but i lost interest around page 50. A year later I went with my friend to see the first movie, though i had every intention to sleep through it. From the first scene i was hooked. After the movie i went home and re-read SS/PS in one day and begged my mom to get the other 3 books that were out. I must have read PoA at least 10 times since then. It just amazes me how JKR fits everything together at the end the story.
