Veritaserum Forums > Books > The Half-Blood Prince
Bella Lestrange
I guess i expected someone to die, and i guess when i realised she couldnt chop off hermione ron or harry yet, snape needed to carry on in the story and the rest where there to keep the next few books going it had to be dumbledore, all the fingers pointed in that direction so it wasn't to shocked

my answer would be

Not that big of a twist

Hey there Bella,

You did not have in your poll question what the dramatic twist was, so I'm assuming you meant Dumbledore's death by your own post. I'm going to change the title slightly, to make it clear what people are voting on. If you find it unsatisfactory, give me a PM and I'll change it to what you like. smile.gif
Bella Lestrange
Sorry about that because i knew what i was talking about i thought that others would to. Your right i should try and make it more clear, you can change to something similar but to the same gist.
WhiteKnight
Yeah I guess I did sort of expect something like this I just really didn't want DD to die. So I was kind of hoping the inevitable wouldn't happen. I remember right before the book came out the was quite a buzz about a death and I figured it was probably DD and possibly Hermione. But ohh well.
cesador
I knew someone was gonna die and the first time i read HBP and it was DD who died i kinda paused and was like "whoa... what just happend" it was kind of a shock, but then after thinking about it. I realised she did it for shock value as well as the plot.
dansgal4eva
i expected Dumbledore to die actually from the moment he was on the front cover of book six. But when Snape killed him my eyes popped out of my head lol. i really didn't expect it. I believe he will come back, although i hope he doesn't. Not that i don't like dumbledore it just seems better for him to stay dead.
marire
Well, I knew pretty sure that someone was going to die and I think somewhere in my mind I excpected that it would be DD. I still remember quite clearly when I was reading the chapter where DD drinks that potion and when Harry was walking DD out of cave I had this horrible, you could say, realisation that DD would die. I just somehow knew without a doubt, although my mind was trying to fight against it.
But I just have to admire Rowling that she has nerves to write that kind of plot twist. I couldn't possibly have done that.
Urik Burik
I agree i hadent even thoght about DD dieing.
I mean he wasnt just the biggest wizard of all time.
But it shows that anyone can die and its very strong to actualy vrite that kind of a thing which show how brilliant JKR is as a vriter.
And off course it is very emotional(aha realy) smile.gif
HermioneClone
Well, I knew before the book that there would be another death, as JKR said that someone else would be dying on her site. I put "Yeah, kinda" because although I knew someone would be dying, I didn't totally expect that Snape would kill Dumbledore! That was a shock! tongue.gif
George's Girl
i expected a twist, in the form of the death of a large/main character, but not dumbledore. i was so shocked, i didn't even get upset untill the funeral.

especially after all the stuff DD and harry went through together in this last book, and the many unanswered questions brought up in the book, it was a low blow to kill off DD. no fair!!!

many (my mum included) seem to have been convinced that it was a baddy who died this time, but i always had a feeling that it would be another person close to harry, and while i am majorly relieved that both ron and hermione are still with us, i wish DD was too!!! JK said once ( i think) that the reason there are sad deaths of "goodies" is to emphasise the encompasing and true evil in the "baddies", that they are not just taunting, but actually capable of carring out such horrific acts, and we as readers need to realise this about the nature of evil, and the make the fight against it more powerful.

at least, that's what i understood from what i read of her statement. sorry i can't find it, read it a long time ago
Veinic
i was actually spoiled b4 i even reached the cave. bad isnt it? actually i was spoiled by visiting this forum tongue.gif but i blamed myself for being too careless...

..i just hope it wouldnt be the same story repeated in the 7th book. if i'm spoiled for the 7th book it would really feel terrible.

even before the HBP book was released i listed some candidates for the death. i think i listed 3 characters, which is Dumbledore, Hagrid, and Snape.

MOD EDIT: Minor netspeak was spotted, (b4, etc.). Please be more careful in the future ~ Quality Quidditch Supplies

well i think what made it so shocking was that sirius had just died and when the 6th book was about to come out everyone knew that, someone was gonna die so everyone assumed it would be someone less important consider someone quite important just had, also to add more when i was first reading the 6th book i had this feeling that it was snape who would die considering i thought it would be ironic he just got the DADA job and then dies.
scrumdiliumcious
i would agree with the dramatic twist...but from book 4-6, a character more and more important dies, and book 7 im sure will be harry, just to continue the cycle. if harry doesnt die, then the books can continue.
Bella Lestrange
Not really the books probably won't carry on, just think if harry doesnt die until he was 100 the books would carry on till then, she would probably cut them off else we'll all get bored.

just saying

anyway back to the real subject

JKR has already said she WILL NOT be writing any more books in the series whether Harry dies or not, so that's a moot point.

Personally, I just don't see her killing Harry off. There's just too much invested in Harry for him to die. If she does, I'll never forgive her...... tongue.gif
magical_number_7
It was quite obvious that someone had to die, and I guess it was DD. Like that pattern scrumdiliumcious said, it had to one of the Order, either Harry/Ron/Hermione or LV. I did sort of expect that it would be DD that would go. I'm still sad though. sad.gif I would love it if Harry dies though, again the pattern, who is more important that DD except Harry? I would love it because it would make the HP series completly different from many other series. Instead of hero wins, bad guy dies; it would be hero dies, bad guy wins. I know that most people will think that I'm crazy, but oh well.
AmandaDarling11
When I read it, my mouth dropped open and I had to re-read it to make sure that it had actually happend. I had to stop reading for awhile to actually cope with it haha.

Although I was tipped off about Dumbledore dying before I had finished reading, I could see the signs. The increasing closeness of Dumbledore and Harry, and the "He suspected that I was your man through and through." "Oh, how rude of him." "I said I was." And then Dumbledore had "tears" glistening down his cheeks. It brought about a certain understanding between the two of them, I also felt that when Dumbledore said, "I am not worried Harry, I am with you," that Dumbledore was definatly, shoe in the door, a goner. After Sirius died in book 5, nothing surprises me anymore on what she would or wouldn't do when it comes to deaths...especially know with the recent news story that was released about the press conference...
luckyfish
Ok...This is going to sound like I cheated or something, but when I got home with my book in my hand and I was ampt to begin the book, I kinda snuck a peak at the end pages and I saw the words: white tomb....I got such a fright that I slammed the book shut and began to whine to my parents biggrin.gif

When I reall got to the end after reading the pages before his death, I read it and I just started to cry!I literally cried and I was shocked even though I knew what might happen...My mom even asked me what I was crying for...You guys, like her, probably think I am nuts! rolleyes.gif
Albus Dumbledore
UGHHHH i hated my first night with my book. I always, as a tradition, use my reciept as a ookmark til the next morning because of th ehour at which i get my book. I couldnt find it and i flipped through and when I finally found it it was on a page that Harry was saying "SNAPE KILLED DUMBLEDORE!" I could have crawled in a hole and died. The whole book was ruined for me.
bluephoenix5
First of all with the harry potter books it's to be expected that there is some sort of twist that will happen whether someon gets injured, dies, or whatever. it's just how jk writes the book. i heard that someone was going to die in hbp so it wasn't all that dramatic or suprising for me. but then she had to kill off dumbledore at the end. such a sad terrible twist to end a book. a good twist but sad. near the final few chapters i started to think about what was going on in the story. no one had died yet and so i thought it was possible that dumbledore could die. just a possiblity that came to mind. i didn't really think anything of it until the end when he actually did die. it was dramatic in a way but not all suprising looking back at the circumstances. snape killed dumbledore and i think that's really all that made it dramatic in the end.
Horace Slughorn
I personally, was not too shocked with the whole 'twist". ohmy.gif I even thought that Dumbledoer will die in the fifth book. Dumbledore was the one that Voldemort was afraid of. If Dumbledore was still alive when Harry went searching for the horcruxes, Dumbledore would be doing all of the work. Look at what happened when they were inside the cave! Dumbledore paid with his own blood, he knew where the boat was. He knew about the Inferi. He drank the whole potion. Lastly, he killed off the inferi that were attacking with fire. Ever since, in the Horcrux chapter, I knew that Dumbledore would simply not live to help Harry and his friends. sad.gif Quite depressing isn't it... sleep.gif

Harry_Ginny777
it was a little of a twist but i kind of thought something was going to happen to Dumbledore when he went to the Dursley's and his Hand was all burned so i didn't think he was going to have a good year in hogwarts i mean i thought he might get hurt really bad but i din't know he was going to die it was sad.
Sirius.James
I picked up a few hints of foreshadowing in Half-Blood Prince, things like Narcissa saying 'Dumbledore won't always be there to protect you' and a few other hints, too. So I sort of saw it coming, I suppose.

My brother had finished it before me, he loves Snape, and was quite depressed after reading it. I think he wanted me to believe that Snape died, because he told me to think about the fact that he's the new DADA teacher. So, when I told him I thought Dumbledore would die, he was surprised.

i was expecting A twist but not THE twist...i was expecting something like fudge dies or snape or something like that but not Dumbledore i guess i just always thought of him as unbeatable! but everyone has their weekness i find it comforting though that dumbledore was so nice and kind that his greatest weekness was trust!.
Dumbledoreisalive
if you reallythink about it you would know that something would happen like that but it was still a real surprise when that happened anyway
Reecy13
My answer would definately be Not at ALL!! That was such a big shock to me i had to read it twice. I guess you get used to DD helping Harry out throughout the first five books and more than half of the sixth book that it just wacked you in the face. I just always knew that DD would be there. I was so hurt!
give_dobby_clothes
when I thought about who would die in the book (I realized someone would go) I didn't at all think it would be AD. It didn't feel like his time you know? I just always imagined he'd be there at Harry's side to aid him in his journey but I guess J.K. didn't want to make it TOO easy for Harry or where would the story be? But really, Sirius then Dumbledore? Who's next, Lupin, Ron, Hermione, Ginny? With J.k. Rowling you never know what to suspect.
--HP Addiction xoxo
Personally, I never thought of such a dramatic twist like that. I just thought that maybe some of characters will get hurt of seriously injered. But never killed. I just thogut that she killed enough (aka Sirius Black in OotP)... But i guess from book 4 to 6, a more and more important characters die. So in book 7 im it might be Harry himself ! Just to continue the cycle. But if she does and kills off Harry I'm never going to forgive her.... ! (lol)
the only one he'll ever want
*sniffs* I still remember sobbing into a blanket at about three in the morning when I first read the part where Dumbledore died... how dreadfully sad.
Yes, though, I was expecting some kind of twist.. all of JKR's other HP books have had something completely unexpected happen... and it seemed that, in the fourth and fifth books, it was a tragic death due to evil forces.
In that manner, it was just a question of who was going to be the next victim.
While I wholeheartedly regret Dumbledore's death, I think it was well done and a great way to get the seventh book going... I mean, with the only wizard that Voldemort ever feared gone, what will become of the wizarding world? Naturally the final battle between Harry and Voldemort will arise, but whether Harry will be able to defeat Voldemort without Dumbledore's safety, guidance, and aid is a question that must be going through everyone's heads.
Now that I think about it, though, there were a few subliminal passages in the book that might have suggested Dumbledore's death. Nevertheless, while I think it was brilliant on JKR's part, I never would have expected it to be Dumbledore.
kelseaaa
i didnt realise dumbledore would die, i never thought it possible, but obviously i was wrong so i vote for-no because i honestly didnt think of that as a possibility

I have a strong suspicion that she'll choose the easy way out by killing Harry? Why? Simply because with his magical abilities or lack of them, there's no way eh can overcome Tom unless he goes for a kamikaze attack. This way JKR closes the series, ensuring that further attempts at continuation would be bland. Let Harry die in the canon, we can always find him alive in fanfiction wink.gif

I was not surprised that a main Goodie was going to get the axe. I was just surprised that it would be Dumbledore...
and that the murdered would be SNAPE!! So I put "No, not that big of a twist!" in the poll for my answer. So if the so-called death cycle continues, then two main characters will die. JK Rowling has cofirmed this so now everybody will be wondering who they will be??
I have some possible names:
Hagrid, Lupin, Moody, Snape, Hermione, Ron, Ginny, any of the numerous Weasleys, and...
Harry Potter.
For more info on this matter check out this forum topic:

I really thought somebody else would die since Potter now has no mentors left! (well, maybe Lupin) I really admired Dumbledore and thought he would be killed off in the last book. Shame that I was wrong.

time turner
I expected someone to die in this book, but DD was the last person that I expected to be the one to die. DD was one of the main characters, I expected him to live at least to the final book, because his help was, and is, still needed, it was a very untimely for his death, But J.K. not the most predictible author.
Moon(I luv you Luna)
Basically, when i saw Snape some in, i was like "Oh no." and then he raised his wand and i'm like "Harry do something!" then he said "Avada Kedavra!" and i'm like "Nooooooooooo! No no no no no no no!" Then i cried.

I wasn't expecting it at all. Maybe that's why i took it so hard. My friends saw me at school on Monday, and they go "Whoa, who died?" and i just burst into tears. They think i'm strange.

But this is JKR, so i sort of saw a death coming. But not Dumbledore! That was too heart-wrenching. unsure.gif
blackfan
I did think when the book was first published that it would be insane for JK to kill off Dumbledore, even though my colleague correctly predicted it, i thought McGonagall would get it. I was quite disappointed at first but realised it was needed 'cos harry has to stand on his own feet in the final book.
synchro spell
i was totaly expecting it! dumbledore's character was practictly screaming "Die albus, Die!!"
FireryPhoinex
It kinf of hit me like a freight train. I was expecting some one to die because on the cover there was the dark mark over the school. Not Dumbledore is what Is what I was thinking. I was expecting it to be hagrid or maybe Mcgonagal.
Phoenix_1
When I started reading HBP, I thought DD would die in the next book...but then, when I continued reading, I realized in some way that he was going to die in HBP...but I would never had imagined that Snape would kill him, I thought of a more peaceful way, maybe because I was fond of the character.
lilypotterlovesjames
i really dont think harry will die in the end but i think voldemorts gonna try and kill hermione and ron to make harry weak
Mrs Longbottom81
I was expecting a major character to die in HBP, so I can't say I was absolutely shocked. I wouldn't say I knew it was going to be Dumbledore, but it was in the back of my mind. And of course, my brother got to that part before me, and he was flipping out about someone that had died, but he wouldn't tell me who it was, so I was expecting a twist by the time I got there.
Serpens
Yeah, I expected it, it seemed natural,... but I didn't actually think Dumbledore will die, I didn't predict that. But it seemed that Harry will have to get lonelier, with less support... Dumbledore being the only true father-figure, true master he had during his growing up years was only natural for Albus to die... This forced Harry to mature.
Vontsje
My answer is: Yeah kind of. I expected something BIG would happen, but Dumbledore dead, no, I didn’t quite expect that. Of course I see I should have, if I look back, but when I was reading I didn’t. It completely shocked my! I thought, this is a joke, can’t be true. I must have read it wrong. But no, I didn’t. I was expecting something dramatic, but not this!
crazy4u
luckyfish,I don't think you are nuts at all. Albus Dumbledore, that was really awful! In my case, I knew somebody would die but it really was a very dramatic twist for me.Because of a misunderstanding,I was under the impression that Snape would be the one to die and I was very upset. Then I ''accidentally'' saw the title 'The white tomb' and I was all confused but I started suspecting.I read the rest of the book and I was so afraid that Dumbledore would die.And he was the one.I was shocked by the whole scene and especially by the part where Snape kills him.I couldn't believe my eyes! No,no,no!I immediately thought:"And I felt sorry for Snape when I thought that he would die!" Anyway,I was confused but then I thought things over and figured out the truth. But still with Dumbledore gone, everything was going to change and that scared me a bit.
xoHannah
I didn't quite expect it, really. The two people who were very determined to protect Harry just died. I mean, I thought JKR was going to give Harry a bit of help now that he and Voldemort must face each other. I was very sad when Dumbledore died, actually.
