my only complaint is that fact that he looked way too greasy in the films.
It would have been alright if he had looked kind of haggard during the points where there was a full moon... but the whole time? dry.gif
Trickster
sorry to ressurect an old thread, But i always imagined lupin looking like jon stewart... wierd, eh?
Dawlish
I think David Thewlis did well in the role (especially the heart-to-heart talks with Harry) but still when I'm reading the books I see Noah Wyle as Lupin - even though he's American...

user posted image

This is probably just because Noah's great as the Physics teacher in Donnie Darko and there are similarities between Mr Monitov (spelling poor as usual tongue.gif) and Remus Lupin.
sam1mad
I have to admit I had a strange attraction to Lupin. They made him wear cardigans and gave him a moustache but still... wink.gif

Its strange hearing what everyone thought the characters would look like cos you do build a picture in your mind. I thought Sirius would be younger and better looking but I think Gary Oldman did a brilliant job. I cant imagine anyone else playing him now.
gryffin_hauz_88
I don't see anything wrong about David Thewlis on being Remus Lupin. He did a great job in playing the role.
hedwig.9
Well I didn't think he fit much. For the first thing, lose the mustache! And then he wasn't dressed in patched robes never mind robes, he was dressed in a suit! And he never looked tierd and always sounded like... well not like Lupin, that's all I can say. He was so--stiff. Nothing against David Thewlis or anything but he just wasn't right.
Sofie
I think he is the perfect Lupin...but the moustache blink.gif why, oh why???? Did Jo said it somwhere?

Anyway, Thewlis did a great job. smile.gif He portrayed the shy, intelligent, lovely DADA professor perfectly.
He is the only actor from the movies who managed, that i imagine him while i read PoA. But for some stange reasons i dont see him in OotP. blink.gif Maybe after the movie. wink.gif
starlight
at first i was like "what in th worl! thats lupin?" but then i remmeberd the book and i realzed he was a lot like what the book had described, i think i wasnt ready for what he really looked like compared to what i saw in my mind.

The one thing that really bothered me in the movie was Lupin. Not as a character but as an actor! I just don't think he fit the part. The actor reminded me more of Pettigrew more than Lupin. I think they should have found someone else. Someone more Lupin like! What do you think?

totally not true i think! mad.gif
i think David Thewlis is totally wright for the role!
as a mather of fact i think D.T. is a absolute total Wolf bloke
(also because hes super hot, sexy and handsome like a real wolf!) wink.gif tongue.gif

no offense (look at my signature) smile.gif

I absolutely loved Lupin in the movie. He didn't really grab my attention at first, but he sort of endeared to me throughout the movie. I was satisfied with David Thewlis... but what's with the moustache?! dry.gif
K.Lupin_werewolf
i thought David did a great job as Lupin. even when he was on the bridge talking to Harry he still had that deeper sadness. And at the end when he told Harry "I've looked worse, believe me." he still had that element of sadness and well i'll shut up there! David was really good for the part.
Spencer Potter
I think he did a good job, although the werewold was damn ugly and didnt look like I was suspected it to be but he did a great job.
phoenix_song
I thought David Thewlis did a good job as Lupin. Sometimes you cant be disappointed when the character doesnt look like you expected, when the actor does such a great job pulling off the personality of the character. He was very likeable, and thats what the kids in the book wanted....was a likable DADA teacher. I think that David pulled off a really good Lupin.
slytherin_xo
ummm... i think they did an alright job with the werewolf. i would have had a slight resemblence to david just to show that they were connected. i know that has nothinng really to do with the actor i just thought i'd say that the movie makers could have put more creativity in. but when it comes to david's acting, it was superb and everything i imagined Lupin to be... except for the looks; they were a bit off. happy.gif
Sirius.James
I really liked David Thewlis as Lupin. He just did such a great job making the character likable, and making that caring connection with Harry noticable on screen. I always thought of Lupin as a really laid back, easy to talk to, extremely likable guy. I guess when I read the description of Lupin, it doesn't exactly fit, but I now imagine David as Lupin in my head. I think he fits perfectly.

Well *I* thought David Thewlis did a brilliant job as Lupin. smile.gif The casting crew have yet to disappoint me!!

i agree with you there!!! i think David did i wonderful job of Lupin laugh.gif
besty
When i first saw lupin i didnt like him but he grew on me, i didnt like his moustache, but apart from that he was how i expected. what are you talking he looked nothing like hoe i expected peter pettigrew.
K.Lupin_werewolf
going back to a point made so much earlier about the crew picking someone who should have been much younger and handsome - i don't agree with this because being a werewolf as described in the books, made him look older and as though "a good hex would finish him off"
well done david you were fantastic!
I am a machineee
I didn't imagine Lupin's character in the book looking anything like he did in the Prisoner of Azkaban film. I was dissapointed.

And I think he looks waaaaay too much like the principal from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which is distracting, AND that the Ferris' actor ended up being a pedofile is disgusting. And even creepier, Lupin's nickname is "Moony", and Ferris' is Principal Rooney. HA, lame I know.

But who else didn't like Lupin?

[Mod Note:Hi, welcome to Veritaserum smile.gif Upon a Head Auror's suggestion, I am merging your topic with another thread discussing Mr. Thewlis as Professor Lupin. If you have any questions, please PM the staff.]
Spencer Potter
Loved him, sorry not a girl but he was an amazing actor.. I watched the special features and he actually tried out for Professor Quirrell so much and he liked being there so much he tried out for Lupin.
Sirius.James
Haha, sorry. But I think you're probably one out of very few here that didn't like David Thewlis as Lupin. I thought he was perfect. Ick, when you say he looks like Jefferey Jones I totally understand why you wouldn't like him. If I had that connection between the two actors, I'd probably be grossed out, too.

But I don't really see it, thank God. I actually really like David Thewlis' appearance, [he was a little strange in Dragon Heart...but, hey, he looks better now] and his over all look for Professor Lupin. He puts a great image of the character in my mind for me. I think he did a really good job.

i agree strongly with Sirius.James i loved David Thewlis as Lupin he was the perfect perosn i had in mind and he soo looks the part of lupin being thin and werewolf like. i loved him in the movie and cant wait for the fifth to come out!! wub.gif
Seriouslysirius
I think that David Thwelis makes a great Lupin....

He really portrays the character great. I agree with K.Lupin_Werewolf an older Lupin fits the character better. He is defiently a great Lupin and should not be changed in the other films..
Jezebel
I was terribly dissapointed when I first saw Lupin in the film. As I read the book the character came across as more rugged and handsome, kind of like Aragorn. Very much like Aragorn actually. They seem like the same character to me.
I think Thewlis' natural looks are very Lupinesque. Much more so than the way he looked in the film. Looking at regular pictures of him I think, "That is Remus Lupin!"

He's a great actor (not counting Dragonheart. good Lord that movie was awful), and I'm glad he was chosen to play Lupin, but I think the wardrobe department could have done much better.
mayfair
David Thewlis is an excellent Lupin. His portrayal as a kind, understanding yet authoritative teacher is amazing. He is the reason why Remus Lupin's character comes out so strongly in the PoA movie and I think he also has been chiefly responsible for Lupin becoming such a prominent character in several fan fictions that have come out subsequent to movies' release. You just can't miss the love and affection he displays every time he comes face to face with Harry on screen and thus, brings in a warmth to Lupin's character. It's similar to the emotions that Gary Oldman brought to Sirius Black's character in the same movie. I am looking forward to seeing David in subsequent movies.
K.Lupin_werewolf
thanks Seriouslysirius!!

mayfair - you are so right! everytime i write about Lupin i aslways see David and thanks to Dvaid's portraying of Lupin i have created a character for my books that i am very proud of!! without J.k's invention of Lupin and David's acting David Scarlett would not be here tday lol
Seriouslysirius
I knew you would like him K.Lupin_Werewolf.. Hence your name..

I've got a question what do you think you'd do if they cast somebody else for Lupin.
I'm intrested because i know i wouldn't be that happy.
SpinJam
I don't mean to be an anti David Thewlis, but the first time I ever saw him in anything he was in Dragonheart, and he played that snotty, mean, murderous prince who killed Sean Connery's Draco. So when I heard his voice, that character kind of stuck with me a little more than I would have liked. I dunno. I guess he's okay. I just expected Lupin to be played by someone that was a little softer around the edges. David's great, but he's almost too bold of an actor in voice, and in presence. I always picture Remus as being a little more gentle (even though he's a werewolf).

well Seriouslysirius... if David was not Lupin then i guess i would not mind because if that was the way then i wouldn't know any other actor.... it's like if a coffee table was called a tea table then we would all be used to it by now and we wouldn't know any different....
but i guess because i know how David acts and how he has brought Lupin to life.... i would hate it if another actor took his place then again i would hate it if any character was replaced in Harry Potter....

SpinJam - the first time i saw David Thewlis was in Dragonheart too...i thought David's Lupin was soft... the way he speaks on the bridge.... i love it! but you know you are allowed your own opinion!! biggrin.gif
SnakeCharmer74
I had first seen David in Dragonheart as well and didn't put the two together until years later. I was looking at the different actors in IMDB and when I got to David Thewlis' page I saw that and bought the movie to watch again.

I would have never guessed that was him. He played the part brilliantly. Had I made the connection earlier I would have probably been dead set against him playing Lupin only because I would be afraid he would have seemed harder, and not so Lupin-y. That just goes to show how amazing of an actor David is. He was soft spoken and kind looking yet stern when he needed to be.

Because of his portration of Remus I have come to love him as much as I love Draco and for those of you who know me that's quite a bit. wub.gif

I Thought He Did A Good Job biggrin.gif

Although I Did Have A Differnt Picture In My Mind About What He Would Look Like, But Indeed, A Brilliant Job laugh.gif He's A Great Actor.
CarlR234
As a big Thewlis fan pre-PoA I was really excited when I heard he was going to be playing Lupin. I liked Lupin as a character before that, but after I found out who would be playing him I suddenly became much more interested in him while reading the books. Then the movie came out and I was blown away, I can't even imagine anyone else in the role anymore. He's definatly one of the greatest actors around today (Has anybody seen Naked? To think most of that was improvised!) and I think it's awesome they honored him with that role. I mean look at the line-up of actors they've used for the rest of the adults in the series, the majority of them are or will be film legends!
ScarHead101
i don't know David in any other films but i thought he did the best job of playing lupin. he was a little geeky but then not. i thought he was perfect.

Yup, I have smile.gif Astounding piece of cinema. I didn't realise most of it was improvised though - was it really? Wow...David's even more talented than I already knew he was! But he was utterly perfect for Lupin. I did have my doubts at first, I must admit - I had someone like John Hannah more in mind really, but I can't imagine anyone else doing the character now.

Guin, to see David at his Lupin-like best, you really should watch "Besieged". Not only a showcase for his talent, but one of the most moving stories I've seen in a long time. Definitely very Lupin-esque wink.gif
K_the death eater
I think that David Thewlis did a very great job. I can't think of anyother person to have done a better job as Lupin as he does. I mean he shows so much emotion and depth (that sounds boring) in the character. I just think that he did a really really great job.

Hey now, come on guys! Look deeper! Beauty comes from within, you know....tut tut.... wink.gif tongue.gif Okay, he's not exactly Colin Farrell to look at, but I found him much more attractive than said Irish boy

Just wait a minute while I try to stop drooling over Colin and David in the same sentence - you shouldn't do that to a girl biggrin.gif

Anyway, I completely agree - I always remember reading the Scarlet Letter at school and remembering how Hesters' husband's physical appearancewas described in increasingly negative terms as he become progressively more 'evil' and that summed it up for me - a persons personality and inner strength definitely affects the way that they appear physically. (although admittedly David is gorgeous anyway, so I am a little biased in this particular case tongue.gif )

In thought that he portrayed Remus wonderfully, showing both his weakness and his beautiful inner strength, compassion, intelligence but with a remaining twinkle in his eye that sows his wit and ability for fun.

I honestly couldn't think of anyone better to portray him, he looks slightly physically weak (especially at the end subsequent to his transformation) but not so weak that his monthly transformations seem impossible

he shows composure, passion, humor - the whole complex emotional and personality traits that intertwine to create what we lovingly know as Remus. Remus is such a deep character and I think that David manages to put across his characteristic on all levels

He actually manages to look like he aged appearance is caused by wear and tear of his transformation rather than reflecting old age - he maintains the youthful exuberance within his eyes, features and mannerisms

He works well with Gary Oldman and has a fantastic rapour{sp?} - just as though they were old school friends reunited (I can't wait to see the infamous 'sit down Sirius' if then manage to keep it in the film) - he actually seems as though he could 'control' the animal within himself and within Sirius (his free spirit and emotional fireworks) like no-one else could - just as in the books (is it too obvious that I'm a R/S shipper tongue.gif)

- I loved him in Gangster Number One - so fine, its amazing just how gentle he can play a character with subtlety and grace - a sort of similar role in which he is a ferocious killer but a gentleman with a kind and caring side, a sense of fairness and...

(well I'll stop now or I could carry on for days tongue.gif )

"Naked" is my fav film in..THEWHOLEWORLD. It's just so bloody dark, you know? Lovely. Thewlis was nothing short of brilliant in that one, and it even got him a price during the film festival in Cannes that year....and yes, most of it was improv, because that's how Mike Leigh (the director) likes to work. I adore both Leigh and Thewlis smile.gif

Just so I won't go completely off topic, I'd just like to say that Thewlis also did an excellent job on POA. I know a lot of people thought he had the wrong look - which he did; drop the 'stache next time, David! - and the wrong age, but I thought he pulled it off nicely. He really came across as the kind of calm, friendly person I pictured Lupin as when I read the books. And about the age issue..I mean...they'd hired Alan Rickman before they knew the exact age of his character, didn't they? I'm not quite sure. But if so, it would be weird to hire someone who were much younger than Rickman to play Lupin and Sirius, seeing as these three characters - Snape, Lupin and Black - were supposed to be in the same year at Hogwarts. Nuff said.
HermioneClone
I think he was a great Lupin. He played him well. I had pictured him differently but overall he was very Lupin-like to me. His composure and quietness were great. . .the way he was pretty much aware of everything around him. . .it was really good.
UnknownLocket
Sure, I think that he played the character of Lupin very well, but he definately didn't look the way that I would have expected. However, he convinced me that he fits the part perfectly. But when I first saw him in the film, to be blunt shutup.gif , he looked kind of ugly. I mean, I've seen the pictures and he's gorgeous, but wasn't very attractive in this film. That mustache...urgh...that needs to go.
ChOco
yea, he played a great lupin, in my opinion. although not attractive, he seemed to have that understanding nature to him, especially with the whole "chocolate" & "werewolf" thing. that was some good acting...
crazy4u
It was a little weird seeing him at first.I guessed I had imagined him different. But now he doesn't bother me.I got used to him.I didn't like him as a werewolf but that doesn't have to do with the actor.
lemon_tree_girl
David Thewlis absolutely fits as Lupin. Maybe its because I used on him, but anyway, he is awesome. He is an excellent actor. Yes. Cant wait to see Order of the Pheonix movie.
Lupin-Lover
David Thewlis definately fits as Lupin at first i was a bit doubtful beacuse I'd never seen any of his work and he didn't look a thing like how i imagined him, and plus Lupin being my fave character i was really afraid of being disappointed but DT is excellent and i wasn't disappointed... not that my opinion means much mellow.gif

This is so weird...I am the biggest David Thewlis and Lupin fan I know, and I don't seme to have psoted on this thread. Dear God, the Apocalypse is nigh!!!

Lupin has always been my favourite character, and I remember feverishly flicking though a magazine in 2004 because I was going to see PoA for my birthday and wanted to see what my Lupin would look like. My first thought:

It's gotta be the light.

Seriously, I hated him at first. Darn right despised this random I'd never seen before (though I had and didn't know it! laugh.gif ) playing my Lupin who looked nothing like this random. Then I saw PoA again...and again...and again...and soon I was looking David up on Google and then... wub.gif

Funny, eh?

Thewlis rocks as Lupin. Though he certainly looks nothing like my Book-Lupin, and his portrayal is actually quite different to my head version but...well, that's what makes the movies interesting, eh? He's his own Lupin, he's Thewlisised Movie Lupin! laugh.gif Anyway, if you read his initial discription anyway, the only requirements he needs is:

1) be a man (I think we have that covered)
2) be kind (and though Thewlis can be a slightly harsher Lupin, that just gives us clues into another side of Lupin...this guy can't be Lucid Lupin all the time! Most people will know what I am talking about!)
3) look a little shabby (it says shabby, he's not wearing a ripped tablecloth!)

Yes, I think he's hot (both of them!).

And if you squint you can't see the 'stache much, anyway. facial hair much better in OotP, personally... laugh.gif
ashleyywhoo
I thought he was a GREAT Lupin, he fit in the wise, polite man quite nicely. I loved how he acted with that quiet sense in him, that made you want to stop and listen to his wise words. ohmy.gif
He also gave a good physical image of Lupin, because the Lupin I imagined while reading the book looked WAY different. In a bad way.
Haha, so all in all David Thewlis was great portraying Lupin. smile.gif
themisery
I think Thewlis is just the best one as Lupin. I can't imagine anyone else plays the role.
However, David Wenham may fits the role, but Thewlis still the best.
lupin<3tonks
As you all probably know by now because I say it all the time, lol, I didn't read the books until this year. But I was an avid Harry Potter movie fan, I loved the movies! And wouldn't you know, my favorite character was Remus Lupin? And I think that David Thewlis had a lot to do with it. I just liked his character the way he acted. I also found him attractive, which I'm probably in the minority on that one but thats okay. wub.gif Anyways, yes I found him to portray a very smart, funny and caring person which is what I believe Lupin to be at the core of the matter. So I liked him very very much!
harryjpotter
I thought he was wrong too at first. I had a very different idea of Lupin while reading the books but Thewlis has grown on me somewhat.
HarryPotterIsLife
Ope, I fell in love with Thewlis the first time I saw PoA. I am in love with David Thewlis, and then him in PoA was pretty fantastic, and since PoA was my favorite book out of the series (still is, I love it!), having an all star cast made it so much better (Thewlis, Oldman, Rickman, ect tongue.gif )

I'm spamming spell, I hope that's OK. Guys, if you love Lupin and/or David Thewlis, please stop by SPELL, it's our Lupin/Thewlis thread, and we're on the borderline for being deleted since nobody posts anymore. Bring it back to life!
