The one thing that really bothered me in the movie was Lupin. Not as a character but as an actor! I just don't think he fit the part. The actor reminded me more of Pettigrew more than Lupin. I think they should have found someone else. Someone more Lupin like! What do you think?
severely_severus
Mmm. I don't know. I kind of liked Lupin in the movie, a lot more than I thought I was going to actually... David Thewlis added depth to the character that I hadn't seen before, and I like him a lot more than I had now that I've seen the movie than I did when I just read PoA...
ashleigh07
Well *I* thought David Thewlis did a brilliant job as Lupin. smile.gif The casting crew have yet to disappoint me!!
Louise
Oh man, they couldn't possibly have chosen anyone better than David Thewlis! He had everything! The sad nostalgia, quiet authority, serenity...I had my doubts when I heard he'd been cast, I admit...I'd only ever seen 'Island of Dr Moreau' to judge him by...but having seen the film, I can't imagine anyone else pulling it off like he did. He's a brilliantly talented actor...not to mention pretty cute, in a quirky kinda way... wink.gif I loved the touches they added - the 1940's-ish clothes, the gramophone, old big band classics-type music....I think they reflected his character - someone who has a yearning for the past, for better days, and yet is forced to accept the painful reality of what he is in the here and now, a burden carried with quiet dignity, self-respect and stoicism......Lupin's character was captured perfectly by Thewlis....

Who else did you see in the role, then? Is this how everyone else sees Lupin's character?

(Oh, hang on, maybe that last question belongs in the LupinLand thread, huh? rolleyes.gif )
doomed_renascence
i thought he was really good as lupin. he was sad, but still gave small smiles, very very polite, exhausted, quiet, intelligent, exactly how i thought lupin was. i dont think you can find another guy who can play lupin like that cool.gif
miss_grint
Acting wise, David was good, look-wise, I thought he should look younger & better looking. unsure.gif
severely_severus
lol smile.gif

I don't think we're supposed to see Lupin as good looking, he's supposed to be the quiet one in the group, James and Sirius were the really popular and good-looking ones, and then Peter was the one who just worshipped them.

Regardless, I quite liked David Thewlis as Lupin... I honestly can't see them casting anyone better, before I saw the movie though I thought I'd hate him.

I don't think that he was ugly though, I was surprisingly attracted to him in the movie lol. Er... not so much the moustache, but overall he had a lot of charm and his personality and overall demeanor attracted me to him... wasn't expecting that at all lol.
Louise
I watched 'Seven Years in Tibet' last night....David Thewlis is just so sweet, tender and genuine in all the roles I've seen him in so far....I just love the guy! Anna Friel's one lucky woman, ya know... dry.gif

Hope he gets the part again for OotP....unless, of course, they excise everything not Hogwarts related from the screenplay....which seems to be what they're doing for GoF....
NastyShort
I didn't like David Thewlis as Lupin....I think David Wenham would have done WAAAY better.

But I BET I would have like Lupin a lot more if he lost the moustache and didn't talk about Lily Potter in that manner.

I'm such a mean picky person, I know.
ashleigh07
Took the words right out of my mouth, Dana!! Totally agreed!! smile.gif

Yeah I don't think Lupin was meant to look good looking, if I remember correctly, in the book JKR described him as kinda tired and older beyond his years...prolly coz of his monthly wolfish transformations... wink.gif
Louise
Hey now, come on guys! Look deeper! Beauty comes from within, you know....tut tut.... wink.gif tongue.gif Okay, he's not exactly Colin Farrell to look at, but I found him much more attractive than said Irish boy....

But yeah, Sirius and James were supposed to be the handsome ones....although personally, I would still have gone for Lupin....I've always liked the quiet, broody ones.... tongue.gif

Why didn't you like him talking about Lily like that then, Nasty?

(And no, you're not mean! I love the guy, but I didn't much go for the moustache either... wink.gif )

(Oh...about David Wenham....just looked him up on the IMDB....very cute...and quite Lupin-ish....think I might agree with you there....although I'd have to actually see him in something first. How is he at 'sad resignation' and 'puppy-dog eyes'?)
severely_severus
Yeah, I did find him extremely attractive in the end. Though, I really don't think he was meant to be extraordinarily good looking. (once again, I would have most likely picked him over James though) I mean, I doubt that they would have added scars (clawmarks) across Lupin's face if they wanted him to be the best looking guy around, and I bet he wouldn't have been so quiet either.
NastyShort
Oh, my mouth dropped when he was talking about her like that. I freaked out. Actually, I freaked out a lot at PoA, but that just made me outraged. It made it sound like he had liked or *loved* her....and not that friendly kind of love that everyone goes on about now, you know, where everyone's saying to everyone else "I love you!" And Lupin wouldn't do that! He wouldn't DARE make a move on Lily when he knew James was infatuated with her.

And David Wenham played Faramir in the LOTR movies (I LOVE PETER JACKSON!) He's pretty good at the sad-resigned look, since that's basically what Faramir's face holds most of the time.
SlytherinTaylor
I argree he would have made a better Lupin! I think hes quite goodlooking in LotR AND he's in vanhelsing! Hottness

Yeahhh beauty is only skin deep guys!! I think I would have been physically attracted to James or Sirius inititally but over time if I got to know them, I probably would have become more interested in Lupin... wink.gif

OMG look at me talking about them as if they were real people. unsure.gif No wonder my parents and friends shake their heads in amusement and disbelief at my over-obsessiveness with HP. biggrin.gif

Yeah I did think the first time watching POA that it was a tad weird that Lupin spoke of Lily that way...and yes the possibility that maybe he had feelings of some extent for her did cross my mind...but nahh, I reckon it's purpose was for Harry to discover a little bit more about his parents from a good friend.

David Wenham is a very different actor from David Thewlis (I reckon anyway) so if Wenham had gotten the part, he would have displayed a totally different Lupin character to us.

I *still* think Thewlis did a fantabulous job at playing Lupin!! smile.gif
tashluvsdan
I thought David Thewlis was a good Lupin, but (haha, there's always a but.. well, not always!!) I always imagined that the actor who played Lupin would be much shabbier.. it doesn't matter though.. he did an excellent job, couldn't ask for more than that now, can we?
Padfoot4Ever
David Thewlis did an excellent job. At first I was worried. He didn;t lokk how I imagined it. I thought shorter hair but oh well. Anyways, I had never seen any of David's work. Then in English one time we watched DragonHeart. He was in that and I was a little less worried. Then I saw the movie and thought he was perfect. Needed more scenes actually.
BellatrixBlack
I thought he was very good. Except for the part where he is scolding Harry cause he raised his voice, and I never pictured Lupin doing that. I really loved the part in the shreaking shack where he looked evil for that split second, lol.
Louise
Well, seeing as how that was the first time that Lupin ever raised his voice, we'll forgive him. After all, it was justified - what Harry did was stupid and immature and Lupin was completely right in everything he said...it was a poor way to repay his parents for their sacrifice...and of course, Lupin would be upset about it, not only because he undoubtedly has some affection for Harry (what with him being his best friends' son) and was probably concerned for him, but he has also lost all of his best friends (at that point anyway) over the whole LV thing....I think it might have been a little of his own pain leaking into his judgement there...

But yeah, totally justified...Harry was a prat then....
joeshmoe1228
I always imagined Lupin with white hair for some reason. . .I guess when they said he looked older than he was, I guessed he had graying hair because of stress and maybe still there from being a werewolf.

But I liked Lupin. I didn't think he looked the part. But he can play the part. So it's good.
RG's Babe
i imagined lupin to be well cuter and i don't think that whats-his-face fit the part he didn't do that good of a job sad.gif
Lynn
he wasn't what I xpected. he was ehmmm...
I expected him cuter, nicer, funnier.. Not that much differne, but enough difference to notice
kreacher_the_house_elf
Well, I loved David Thewlis as Lupin. He was a very placid person and only raised his voice because Harry was a complete idiot.

The part about Lily... Yes I think I wrote it in another thread. It was weird when I first saw it but I think that understand the feelings that Lupin would be feeling. So I comiserate with him.
Louise
Well, I reckon I've banged on quite enough about how absolutely wonderful I thought David Thewlis was in that role.... wink.gif So I won't go on about it again, but I just had to voice a bit of support for the poor guy seeing as how it's only me and Kreacher in his corner right now! tongue.gif

Sure, he wasn't my first choice, but now, I couldn't imagine anyone better. And he's said that he's doing OotP too, apparently, according to one of his fan sites, which means that I'm a very happy little bunny indeed... biggrin.gif

I'm kind of changing my perspective on that scene anyway....I think it depends which way you look at it. Lupin talked about James with a great deal of fondness too......

I guess its like that old thing....three people see something unexplained....the religious person describes it as an angel, the skeptic describes it as a camera flare, the psychic describes it as a ghost.....perceptions is a very complicated thing and that's what it all boils down to.

If you're looking for the spark between Lily and Lupin, you'll see it...if you're looking for the friendship that existed between Lupin and James, you'll see that... Personally, I've come to think that Lupin was just reaching out to Harry there - perhaps he felt that it was the closest he would ever come to knowing James and Lily again..... sad.gif
joeshmoe1228
Wait hold on. What did Lupin say about Lily? I'll check up on other threads if no one answers. . .

Anyway, I have a lot of support for Lupin. The scene with teaching Harry the Patronus? He seems like such a mentor for Harry, not always giving him the answers just because he wants it. It sort of reminds me of Athena and Telemachus but okay I better stop digressing. He was there to encourage him and I'm sure I understood how Harry felt to feel so secure with such a figure back into his life. Here was a figure that was the closest he could feel to his father (ironically being close to filthy Scabbers the whole time sleep.gif). Thewlis, now that I knows his name, biggrin.gif , could show sympathy/understanding yet could also be strict when he had to be.

After watching David Thewlis, I didn't like Lupin any less, I actually liked him more.
kreacher_the_house_elf
Ok there is now three of us in the corner of defence for our favourite little werewolf biggrin.gif

I mean if you had anyone more attractive (even though I think he is a bit of a spunk tongue.gif ) he wouldn't look the part.

As well as the fact he is a very established actor!
ashleigh07
Hey are you guys forgetting mua??! Don't forget, I'm the Vice President of S.P.E.L.L., so naturally, obviously, I'm in league with y'all too!! biggrin.gif

Like Dana, I think I've gone on enough about how excellent I thought Thewlis was as Lupin therefore I shan't repeat myself... tongue.gif I was a bit dubious too, when I first found out Thewlis was cast for the part, but yeah, after I watched POA, I thought he was PERFECT for the part and I just can't imagine anyone else now playing Lupin. smile.gif

I pictured Lupin with gray hair too, joesh!! Coz JKR does describe Lupin in the book to have some gray hairs due to being a werewolf kinda aging him on in years kinda.

Totally agreed mate!! I didn't see anything unfitting about Lupin raising his voice there. I guess maybe in the book it was Moody's line and he didn't shout (if I recall correctly) so maybe that's why some people were abit taken back by it. And what more, coming from Lupin, whose character doesn't seem "normal" for him to raise his voice. But yeah, I think in the context of the circumstances, it was not uncalled for. wink.gif

And I do agree with you too Dana, about the whole perspective thing towards the alleged Lupin/Lily romance. Now that you've mentioned it and the more I recall back to that scene, it does look like Lupin was merely reaching out to Harry.

Oh and kreacher, I happen to think Thewlis is a bit of a spunk too!! wink.gif Anyway if I'm not mistaken, in the books it says that the cute one of the Marauders was Sirius... laugh.gif That's why a mate of mine was disappointed at Oldman being cast as Sirius coz she said "Sirius is supposed to be cute!!" rolleyes.gif
LuciusMalfoy
I really liked how David portrayed Lupin. I did picture Lupin a bit cuter, but I think David played him very well. I was quite happy with Lupin in the movie.
kreacher_the_house_elf
I'm sorry Ashleigh. I hope that I'm forgiven. But I think that Gary Oldman would scrub up ok! He looked absolutely frightening in that poster.

David Thewlis was how I pictured Lupin but the scars across his face weren't really true to the book. But as they made him look better. The costume people are forgiven. biggrin.gif
mercutio
Okay, I'm new here and lurking around for the first time. It was either this or go finish my Xmas shopping and with the traffic outside, that ain't gonna happen wink.gif

I thought Thewlis did a brilliant job as Lupin. He was the perfect actor to capture the subtle nuances that JKR wrote into the character, and I can't wait to see him in OotP.

Granted, I wasn't crazy about the little 'tache and that horribly ratty sweater, but Thewlis totally rose above those decisions. He was everything I imagined Lupin to be as a person from reading the books. I did think the scars across his face were a nice touch, even though I saw the film with a friend who hadn't read the books and the minute Snape came in to talk about werewolves, she said, "The teacher is a werewolf, isn't he." I just sighed. That might have given the plot away to some people, but...I still loved the way they looked.

I was actually thinking the other day as I watched Return of the King that David Wenham actually looks a bit like David Thewlis, but even with being only slightly familiar with both of their expanded work, I'd say Thewlis was more fit for the character.

And when I re-read PoA the other day, I noticed that I picture Thewlis when I read, even though I had a very different picture of him physically when I read it the first time. I'd say that's a tribute to a great actor more than anything.
xXhApOcHiCxX
hmm i think that tom thelis didnt fit the lupin or peter character they should have gotten actors that fit the description. i thought peter didnt fit his character either i had imagined all these characters with a totally diffrent image and i was real shocked when i saw the movie that the whole plot was changed. ph34r.gif
kreacher_the_house_elf
They did let on a little too much about Lupin. It sort of spoilt Hermione's day in the sun, by making it too obvious. Where it couldn't be "Oh my god she is so smart!" So it was sort of silly like that. Yeah, this is better than Christmas shopping.

By the way.. It's David Thewlis...*desperate fan mutters in disbelief*
Wednesday_Adams
As I read about you guys discussing a replacement for Lupin, I felt outraged, and also that I myself am betraying Lupin and David Thewlis by reading all of this. I am acting biased, aren't I?

David was brilliant, absolutely brilliant, and I wouldn't have chosen anyone different. Like others, I had my doubts before it came out, but when I saw PoA I was like "whoot!". And, I hope what Dana says is true, because I look forward to seeing David in the DoM scene, that'll certainly be my favorite. I mean, his reaction in the book all on its own made me cry. Hope I'm not spoiling anything. wink.gif
zyra123
Emm... I've never recognise him before truth to say, even though I've seen Dragonheart and the Island of Dr Moreau (which was years and years ago...when it was recently out) and I watched PoA first before reading the book, so I don't get the chance to imagine how he'll look like in movies... and the moustache he had on kind of pull me back a bit....

But then, when I think back at what I saw in the cinema and assured even more after watching the DVD over and over again, I don't think there's anyone better than him...

And ooh...Wednesday, I can't wait for the scene in DoM too... although that was like years from now... aiii... more waiting to do... humph...
crazydiamond
I didn't care much about Lupin until I started shipping R/S. I just didn't understand how cool the character was. But if I hadn't understood it earlier, I would have when I watched the movie. David Thewlis is great! Hadn't heard of him when I heard that he had been cast. Watched Total Eclipse where he's involved with Leo di Caprio... Old, bold and scary. But great actor. Looked better in PoA, though not that good. But there's something about him that makes him attractive in some way. And he is SO gay!

I think he was more passionate then I imagined him in the books. Especially in the Shrieking Shack. And even when he acted calm, you could see his emotions underneath the surface. I loved the DADA-scene, he surely enjoyed teaching. Made me think of Dead Poet's society, when he put the music on. Yeah, can't wait to see him in OotP. Department of Mysteries and all that.
ViviElessar
I love Lupin in PoA! wink.gif I think that David did an amazing job smile.gif I have developed a crush on Lupin wub.gif He's jus adorable!

Hey,zyra123, I love your banner!
Remus Lupin
wink.gif huh.gif dry.gif sad.gif blink.gif unsure.gif sad.gif Before I saw the film I was afraid that David Thewlis wasn't going to be the perfect Lupin,but it seems that I was wrong. He's GREAT in the film. laugh.gif smile.gif rolleyes.gif tongue.gif biggrin.gif

to be honest he was what i had expected. he had the old worn out robes. he also looked like a warewolf too, but my mom did not think so.

ahh, where do i start? i think thewlis was brilliant in the film. i hadn't seen anything of his before that and didn't know anything about him. but i think he does look the part and he does give the character more depth than i had pictured before (as someone else noted). i don't remember thinking he was attractive when i first saw the film, but after watching it again and again i now think he's extremely attractive (and now have a crush on him) i guess mostly because of his demeanor... how caring he was and how he seems to have so much tact and knows the right thing to say in every situation. i guess i saw the character in a new light after thewlis's performance. i love the shrieking shack scene (and, as someone said, those 2 minutes they made lupin look like a bad guy), especially the conversation between sirius and lupin when lupin first comes in and then the hug. david and gary both do a terrific job conveying their brotherly affection for each other. and i love the scene when lupin is transforming too, and sirius is holding him back and saying the part about 'this heart is where you truly live'. gary oldman was absolutely fantastic (and sexy too). but i digress...
anyway, thewlis brought everything to the screen that i thought lupin was and i don't think they could have done a better job casting lupin.
sarah_luvs_tom
I really don't know. He was okay except that he looked a lot older than he really should be. And the scene when he talked about Lily, I found it weird. Thewlis didn't really seem the type of character he was supposed to be playing. I mean, he was supposed to be the quiet one of the group, the prefect. He seemed to me like he was just like James and Sirius when he was younger. His image didn't work for me either.
harry's_girl
i always thought lupin would be more handsome, ruggedly handsome than just a plain adult who looks a bit weak (physically). i thought he'd be more good looking, not that david thewlis isn't. Wasn't what i imagined at all
Peaseblossom
David played the part of Lupin to perfection wink.gif
Layla_Black
I'm happy with Lupin in PoA...The look I love, the style and everything else... tongue.gif
sO.adOrable
The actor who played Lupin, was very good he was one of my fave characters in the movie along with Black. He was much more than I expected.
swirlctw
yes lupin was kinda what i had expected, but the robes were not old and raggy. i just hope that mad eye is better.
sid
i think the actor playin lupin was not as good as i expected him to be. some other guy (maybe hugh jackman) would have been better.there are other guys who could portray the misery and sadness of lupin's situtation as well.
in the climax scene when snape threatens lupin and sirius to stand back and the way lupin shirks back from the wand really seems stupid, he doesnt look like a intelligent member of the gang of prongs, padfoot, moony etc.
also the way he talks about lily sounds as if james negleted him completely and lily was her sweetheart:P tongue.gif .there was not the hint of freindship of the gang of four in the movie which was so imp (MOD EDIT: Erm? What's 'imp' suppose to stand for?). however gary oldman was sooooooooooo perfect. i cant wait to see moody, after i had seen the young tom riddle in movie 2

MOD EDIT: The use of netspeak is not allowed on board. And don't shorten words that made it impossible to understand either. Please read the rules here again. And please be careful next time. Your post has been edited.
Lynn
finally finally!! Someone sharing my point of view..
I didn't like lupin at all to be honest.. ( omg, bet everyone hates me right now)
He was a bit harsh now and then, and lupin in the books was a very kind man...
kingwidgit
I loved Lupin and thought David Thewlis did an incredible job!
akasha_ishtar
I liked Lupin in the movie, I thought he was quite cool realy. Yes he was a bit harsh at some points in the movie, but that is just the way the director wanted him to be, I did not like the way he looked as a werewolf, but hey what can we do about it tongue.gif .

I hope they put him into the 5th movie, it would be great to see and old favourite back in the movies biggrin.gif .
Tuitus
I thought Thewlis potrayed Remus Lupin very well. tongue.gif
He exhumed a sense of grief that comes from suffering as a lycanthrope, yet a casual grace that makes him such an awesome person.
His harshness as you call it is what is described in the novels, he was the Marauder who showed James and Sirius sense, logic, and shame. Such a quality lead Dumbledore to make him prefect. Its the same role Hermione ensues on Harry and Ron.
