to tell you the truth, i hate horror movies because i'm a totally chicken. hehe. but the only real horror movie that i sat through in the movie theatre was the ring, because my friends dragged me in.
that movie was nearly out two years ago, and i'm still freaked out till this day. not as much as before, but still freaked out nonetheless. arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh they based on everyday things AND they are based on real people. samara was a real girl who disappeared, and never came back, while her mother killed herself because of that. ann morgan really did own horses. OKAY I'M STOPPING NOW, MY HANDS ARE STARTING TO TREMBLE, AND I'M GETTING NERVOUS.
of course, that movie's scary rating depends on the person. half of teh people i talk to didnt find the movie scary (but the japanese version scared the **** outta them), but the other half nearly peed in their pants.

I thought it was very well done. It wasn't a classic but it was still a darn good yarn. And it's nice to see Harrison Ford branch out a bit as an actor. Between What Lies Beneath and K-19 (which is brilliant, by the way) he's really exploring new directions.
One of these days I must see the original Psycho. It's supposed to be the best ever.

Oh, it is mate...I can't believe you haven't seen it already! It's
way better than the shot-for-shot remake. That wasn't even in the same class. All Hitchcock's films are brilliant...The Birds...Rear Window...not classic horror maybe, but they certainly leave you feeling uneasy far more than the gore of stuff like 'Night of the Living Dead'.
But if you want serious, classic horror - without gore or (too much

) violence, then the masters have to be The Shining (Stanley Kubrick's version) or The Blair Witch Project. Those films will seriously creep you out.....absolutely brilliant pieces of cinema....
They made far too much fuss over The Exorcist, you know....I saw it a while back and I remember thinking, 'They carried people out of the cinema who'd actually
fainted watching this?...Man, those guys are victims of some
serious mass hysteria.....'

I remember in first grade, I was extremely frightened of Jumanji. It sounds pretty stupid now, but an idea of such a "dangerous" board game scared me so much. I had a horrible nightmare where I dreamed I was the boy, stuck to the game and unable to escape.
But no that is not that scary of a movie, lol. Truth be told, I'm a real big chicken. THe only reason I went to watch the Ring was because I didn't know it was a horror flick and I was very okay with a movie with my friends. Little did I know. . .The Ring scared me even if it didn't scare others. I was paranoid that day. Not only did we watch it on Halloween, but

it's true. But the real information was stretched to its limits. I'm sure the RING 2 (coming out in November) will be just as good (hopefully).I've heard the Japanese version, (RINGU), is much scarier. She comes out of the sink. Imagine Samara popping out while you're brushing your teeth or coming out of your mirror. . .. *shudder*
Well it's a japanese director and those people are good. lol.

What's your favorite scary movie? -- A line from one of the Scream movies.. hehe.
Well, to tell you the truth.. I'm such a chicken!! I force myself to watch these movies, only to be hiding under the covers later on and intently listening for "things that go bump in the night".
DANA!! Gosh, we have so much in common!! I've watched The Birds, the one directed by Alfred Hitchcock.. it wasn't scary but it did certainly leave an eerie feeling in me! We watched it in school, after reading an excerpt from the original story.. by what's her name again? Daphne du Maurier (there ya go).. it was brilliant!! It had a few funny moments.. but my teacher said that in it's time it was considered "very horrifying & was state-of-the-art" hehe!! Compare it to movies today..heh.
The movies that scared me the most though would have to be.. Stir of Echoes & (sadly) The Exorcist.. but mostly 'cause it somehow dealt w/ my religion & we hold belief that excorcism is possible.

Aug 25 2004, 04:58 PM
Oh, I liked The Exorcist.....don't get me wrong....it's just that I don't understand why people reacted to it the way they did. I know there was some talk at the time it was released that there were subliminal cuts used in the film and that explained people's reactions, but personally I think it was just a classic psychology case study in mass hysteria and media hype.
As for Hitchcock...yeah! Tash! What impeccable taste you have, girl!!

I've always loved his films, especially after I went to Florida a couple of years ago and went through that Hitchcock experience thing in Universal Studios....did you know that the hotel they used for Rear Window was actually a model that was like, only about a meter tall? It was really funny....
Totally agree though...Stir of Echoes really creeped me out. And The Others...and Signs....and The Sixth Sense (and no, I really didn't see it coming....) I'm such a coward....

I think psychological horror is far more creepy than blood and guts type stuff though....
One of my mates in uni was telling me about the Japanese version of The Ring though...scared me so much just
hearing about it that I vowed I'd never watch it!!
Anyone ever heard about that BBC thing that was on a few years ago called 'Ghostwatch'? It was pretty famous over here.....'cos everyone thought it was real after it was billed as a real life thing in the papers....counselling helplines were inundated, people turned up at churches for blessings...complete hysteria.....man, I didn't sleep for weeks after that....**shudders**

I vaguely remember Jumanji.. only because I was still pretty young at the time it came out! It scared me too, although.. I'm unsure why.. isn't the movie based on a book or something?
Hehe, DANA.. I must go to Universal Studios to see for myself! I agree that psychological horror is much scarier.. *gets the heebie-jeebies*.. & "The Others" ohmygosh how could I have forgotten to mention that movie? Geebus, that scared me like there was no tomorrow..
For those of you who didn't know,
The Exorcist was based on a true-life event that happened to a little boy in Maryland I think.. yupp. I have the DVD & after reviewing the special features I think.. it was quite informative.. and quite frieghtening!!

I second that! I was so scared the whole time, but I think it was all in the mind. The creepy part was when the old man, woman and mute woman were walking towards them and they went right through the door!
The ending really freaked me out. It took a while to realize they were ****** (don't wanna ruin it for ya). I loved Nicole Kidman's acting! She got nominated right?
i like movies that are more scary than gory

Hehe, I just watched "The Ring" with a couple of friends last night! We were like, 6 people sitting on a couch that is meant to be for 3 people! I was soooo scared! When you see the faces of those who died...ugh...We were all screaming like mad! One of my friends already saw that movie once, and all we had to do was look at him to see if there was going to be a scary part coming up. He always clapped his hands over his face

. The little girl really freaked me out! We all slept in the same room afetrwards, we were so scared!
I saw "The Birds" when I was smaller, and everytime I saw a bird come near me I screamed like a maniac!

I don't remember much of the movie now though.
"What lies beneath" is a great movie too! I was sooo scared! The next day I didn't have any voice
"The Others" was great too! My friend brought the DVD to my place once, and we watched it with my mum! She didn't want to tell us anything about the ending (which was better that way though). Even my mum screamed, but my friend was laughing when she saw how scared we were.
I saw "Signs" too! I know, it isn't really THAT scary, but I find it scarier than "The Ring"! Really! But I really like it 'cause it's got Joaquin Pheonix in it
"The sixth sense" was awesome too! M. Night Shyamalan (sp?) is a great director! Though I was a teensy bit disappointed with "The Village". The ending ruins it a bit, I think.
I never saw "The Exorcist", and I never plan to do that

. I think I'd be much too scared. But I do want to see "Ring 2", and "The Blair witch project".

Yeah, dansgurl, The Grudge with Sarah Michelle Gellar. It's coming out a little before Halloween in the States and it's based on the Japanese version of the movie (the Ring was based on Japanese movie). My friend said it might look like a rip-off because they're both based on a scary movie from Japan but scary Japanese movies have potential. And plus it has Sarah Michelle Gellar.
I really hope I scare my pants off watching that movie. I'll probably get a bunch of friends and watch it Halloween night!

I get terrified of Horror movies but I force my self to watch them.
I think
Japanese and Korean Horror movies are the best! Their story lines are made from our daily activities. For example, our mirrors, handphone, TV, House and?

Your story is funny! Oh, okay I got the point that you are a Pakistani, I thought you are an Indian(sorry!).
Well, to be honest I hate e-chain letters. Once,my friend from Singapore sent me an email stated that we had to send the chain letter to at least 15 people or else the phone will ring! Well, as I said before, I hate chain letter so i just deleted it. Then, the phone which is located just beside me rang! I was very shocked and was trembling,Lol. I started to rush to my sisters. I asked my sisters to answer the phone but they refused as well. There were a lot of dramas at those times and withought knowing the phone stopped ringing. After a couple of minutes, the phone rang again. This time, I answered the phone and hehe...I heard my dad complaining about the unanswered phone.

I saw Child's Play (the one with Chucky) on cable and it was pretty scary, but kinda hilarious. First, he's sweet then he kills people. Also, I liked the fist Scary Movie and it was so funny. I like horror films, but I think they are the cause of me being more afraid inside a house than outside! I feel trapped! Ugh....
Yeah! The Shining is really creepy! I love the "special" effects, especially the blood coming out of the elevator! Ugh....creepy film!
I really like The Ring! I was scared the whole week after I saw it! I mean, seriously scared! The Ring 2 is also good! I just love the story!
I should see the original japanese version, along with The Grudge! But I think the american versions are pretty good, so I'll see...
The only real japanese horror film I've seen is One Missed Call ("Chakushin ari" in Japanese), it wasn't so good, mainly because I felt I had seen it all and it was only scary in the end...
Hey, have you guys seen Darkness? That's a really scary, nasty film! I saw it on Halloween last year! I svear you could hear our screams miles away!
And am I the only one who liked The Village? I know it's not scary, but I just liked the story and I startled a few times!
Otherwise, I've heard that Saw I and II are supposed to be really scary and creepy! I don't know if I want to see it! Have any of you seen it?

I suppose this really isn't much of a horror film (except towards the end; pwoar, it gets wild), but my favourite has got to be "Shaun of the Dead", hands down. My major disapointment and love-hate relationship with horror movies lays in them not being smart enough. I don't mind watching bad horror movies for the sake of a laugh, but I've been on a quest for a film where the characters behave logically instead of doing really horribly irrational things in the face of fear. I suppose the point is that when you are afraid, you act irrationally, but it's never really made sense to me that...I'll pick on "House of Wax" here just because I recently saw it and it's fresh in my mind. After the brother and sister pair in the story survive a fight and being abducted by an psychopath, they decide that the best course of action is to go back to the house of wax to retrieve their friends. As horror film logic has shown time and time again, that is the last thing you ever want to do because A: Your friends are already dead and B: You are going back into the most dangerous place you could possibly enter when instead, you could spend your time going for help. I suppose it's human instinct to want to go save your friends, but when you're alone in a remote place with no weapons and no hope to beating off the bad guys when you go into their lair, you're asking for trouble. I want better writing and better characters of my horror films. I guess I need to go watch some Hitchcock films and call it a night.
The reason, then, of why I pick "Shaun" is that because with how the characters (i.e. somewhat dense) are written, I expected them to do illogical things, like decide that a pub was the best place to hide out during the gigantic zombie infestation of the film. The writing did an excellent job of fleshing out their characters and making it utterly believable that they would do potentially lethal and stupid things in order to survive. I think the fact that the film is as much a comedy, if not more, than a horror film helps make the situations so believable. The writing is solid and the jokes in it are wonderful. If you haven't seen "Shaun of the Dead", please do. Even if you don't find it scary, I'm sure you'll at least get some really nice laughs out of it.

My absolute favorite scary movie ever is SCREAM! i LOVE that movie! i'v seen it 4 or 5 times already, and still love it! i love the whole scream trilogy! [any1] ever seen it? I also love the blair which project! looks real, but it ain't! my mom said when it came out, [every1] thought it was real! they went on the news about it saying like what really happend in maryland?, and they even printed a fake magazine article about it! and, when my mom went to see it, it looked real! it looked like it was made with [sum] hand held video camera! and, on the video box cover, (not sure if they said it at the movie ar not) it says, in the summer of (like i think) 1990 (or [sumthin]) 3 student filmakers went missing in the woods near maryland....... a year later their footage was found! and then, at the end of the movie, they said this is fake, its not real, it never happend, and people got ticked off bad! but ya, its REALLY scary! ever [herda] blair witch or scream?
