Alright,
How many of you noticed that the creators of movie 4 added a completely new character that was not in the books. His name is Nigel, and he happens to appear in 5,000 scenes in the movie. Ok, so maybe not 5,000, but way to many for any ordinary "walk-on" or extra. Half of the beloved characters of the books didn't even get as much screenplay as this mystery boy. I think the reason this topic gets under my skin so much is that they chopped a lot of necessary characters and story lines, such as Mrs. Weasley, Winky, and the Scroots (if you want to classify them as characters), and yet, they find time to add an entirely new character and rewrite and rearrange the plot.
Just the scenes I can recall of the top of my head that "Nigel" appears:
1. In the very beginning of the movie, when the Hogwarts students are watching the Beauxbaton (sp?) carriage is landing, "Nigel" is in the front of the crowd oooo-ing and ahhhh-ing.
2. When Professor McGonagal is teaching them how to dance for the yuleball, Nigel is in the front of the classroom.
3. He delivers Ron's dress robes and longily looks at Harry for an autograph (this is the scene where we learn his name).
4. He is at the yuleball, which is bogus anyway because he is obviously a first or second year and only fourth years or up are allowed at the yuleball.
5. He's in the crowd at the Second Task with the binoculars, rooting Harry on, and Draco hits him in the head.
Oh, I almost forgot. He's also in the scene where Dumbledore is telling them about the Tri-Wizard Tournament for the first time. The camera pans around to the Gryffindor table, and you see him in the background.

Ok, it might seem like I'm a bit obsessed, but I'm a total purist when it comes to the books and I was very dissappointed with movie 4. If you take the movies for what they're worth as a seperate entity, that's fine. But in comparison with book 4, I don't think the movie did the book any justice. Agree or disagree, I'm open to any opinions.

I do not get what they were thinking in putting the Nigel character in. They could just as easily have made him Dennis Creevey, which is what I thought until Ron called him Nigel. That was stupid. They could have included Mrs. Weasley or Ludo Bagman, but they decide to have about a million scenes with "Nigel" in them. Oh well...
Urik Burik
Well i remember that Nigel was Colins brother that did his first year at Hogwarts in GOF.
But i still think we could live whitout Nigel inthe movie. wink.gif

Hey, I knew 4th years and up were the only ones allowed at the Yule Ball...what was Ginny doing there dancing with Neville? Did anyone notice Justin Finch-Fletchey's character sitting in front of Harry when they were listening to Professor McGonnagal tell them about the Yule Ball?

I noticed Nigel in all those scenes as well, though I don't remember there being a Nigel Creevy who started his 1st year in GOF...and I agree that they could have used Dennis Creevy. Was he also the same character who ran by him when they were doing the thing about the badges? A little kid runs by saying "Cedric rules", but judging by him wanting Harry's autograph I guess we can eliminate him being the same person.

Oh yea, I could have sworn that there was somebody named Nigel Hornby...but I did a search and nothing came up. I think it was Olive Hornby.
Urik Burik
Hmm i might remember wrong than but i remember that Colins brother began that year.
He falled into the lake but the giant squid throw him up on the boat again but i´m not sure his name was Nigel. huh.gif
Capricorn
No, it was Dennis Creevy. I don't even recall any Nigel ever mentioned... To tell the truth, I can't imagine Jo using that name anyway, it just doesn't fit in my mind - but that's really just me.

Ginny was invited to the ball by Neville. McGonagall says in the book that 4th years and older may invite younger students. That's why Ginny agreed to go with Neville in the first place - she thought it would be her only chance of going.

But this Nigel thing irritates me too. Why is WB getting so many things wrong?? They sink in my estimation almost daily. Also, Sirius's face being a log instead of Gary Oldman's face made me choke too. At the time I thought WB was probably trying to win the Special Effects oscar, but they could've done better by putting Winky in instead! Didn't help anyway, but sorry I'm getting off topic again.

I think Nigel is boring. He was obviously put in for a bit of comedy, but he had the exact opposite effect on me! rolleyes.gif

Good 'ol Nigel! laugh.gif That little lad made me laugh, but i get more your saying. It was a completely pointless, w-aste of time! wink.gif He still made me laugh, he was just so British! laugh.gif Though i suppose i can't talk... laugh.gif
Nimbus
Hmm, well I didn't really mind Nigel that much. He didn't make or break the movie for me. I don't understand why WB put him in there but it's not like him being in there totally ruined the movie so I don't think it's anything to get worked up about. It reminds me of the random kid they had in PoA..."It's like trying to catch smoke, like trying to catch smoke with your bare hands..."
tskushi21
That's so true! I remember being irked by that boy too....hmm....since when does Dean Thomas look like Biggie Smalls? lol tongue.gif I guess I just get annoyed by silly things like that & the whole "male bonding" session up in Harry's room in movie 3.......it's not in the book, so why add it? That is why add things that don't exist instead of using valable screen time for things that actually took place in the story?!
I'm just being synical....but I thought for sure that the actor that played Nigel must know the director, producer or a cast member. Lord knows....things work that way in Hollywood happy.gif
Anyhoo.....thanx 4 the feedback! I'm new to the site & it's my 1st post laugh.gif
George's Girl
i reckon for most of those scenes the kid turns up in, he's just acting as a filler. you'd probably notice lots of characters out of place in big crowd moments, because they just need people to fill an area. he was just another one of those.

what i don't get, agreeing with most of you, is why it had to be nigel? i mean, all they had to do is have ron say "not now dennis" rather than nigel, and all would be well. a real character would appear, and nothing else would be lost. same effect? surely! so why not? grrrr. frustrating. as bad as voldie using the wand on wormtails DM, rather than his finger. simple. same effect. grrrrr.

well [frnd] friend [ur] you are [rite] right 100%.i think [u] really like the movie as the bottom of [ur] your heart.[ur] Your interest in these scenes a really interestin[g] cool.gif

MOD EDIT: No netspeak. I have edited it for you. I also deleted the long quote you made. No need to quote the entire thing

If a fourth year asks a below-year to the ball then they can go to it. And it was Olive Hornby. She was the one who teased myrtle and was the reason Myrtle became a ghost. To haunt Olive.
Goodplann55
the kid probally won a contest and got into the movie

its really not that big of a deal if you think about it

I really don't get why they put Nigel in. I guess he is the replacement for Colin Creevey but I think they should have just left him in. I noticed that Nigel is one of the characters in the photo taken of Dumbledore's Army for the OotP movie, so Nigel is making a return!!!!

you know I didnt even realise that they introduced a new character before i read this thread and i watched it again just recently and now im like WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!! dry.gif blink.gif

Fair enough you dont notice him too much in GoF and he doesnt change the story line...but the fact that he is seen in the DA pictures for OotP really ticks me off!...there are so many characters that dont make it to the films...yet they decide to make their own characters up from thin air...its really annoying...and i agree with you Capricorn....with sirius' head in the fire...i was waiting knowing what was coming (expecting to see Gary's face)and then when his face was just like a log i was like blink.gif what in god's name is that!!!....i dont see why sometimes they cant stay a bit more true to the books....afterall the books are why people like Harry Potter so much...if someone did do a movie really like the book i think people would like it soo much better..and the MOVIE would be so much better!!......They could have easily used Colin Creevy for that scene where ron gets his robes..*sighs* sleep.gif

I hope they dont bring anymore bogus characters dry.gif
lavender brown
basicly i think nigel was introduced to replace dennis and colin creevy, which is totally mad because me and my friend loved colin and we cant bare the fact that he wont be back again sad.gif

i dont understand why they introduced a new character, maybe the guy who played colin didnt want to carry on, but that is no reason to replace a character

oh well sad.gif
D.A
yes your probably right lavender brown happy.gif

but saying that they could have just changed the person playing colin creevy they didnt actually have to change the character alltogether. It wouldnt have taken much to call this new boy colin instead of "Nigel"...i mean where did that come from??! dry.gif sleep.gif
maia_potter
I'm so glad I've found this thread! I was thinking the very same thing...WHY DOES THAT BOY APPEARS SO MUCH IN GOF??? ¬¬ WHO INVITED THIS KID???

He is in a way replacing the Creevy brothers, because it's basically the same Harry-admiration character. I supose he might got the part by other way than auditioning, I don't know, perhaps I'm letting my imagination fly to high tongue.gif

I don't know if you remember that something similar happened in PoA, were a black boy appeared like in two scenes and we never saw this character in the books (the specific scenes were the one in Divination lesson, where Trelawney tells Harry about the Grim, he tells the class what is the grim, and in other one where they are in the Great Hall, and Seamus comes and tells everybody that Sirius have been seen and this boy says something about Sirius being like catching smoke with your bare hands). You think I haven't seen the movie yet??? lol xD
I don't know why they add this kind of characters, that's a good question to ask the producers lol.

Instead of this scenes they should include scenes that WERE in the book, not things that add nothing to the plot.

What's worst is that now we'll have to bear him in OOTP, because as we have seen, he is in DA!! nooo!! why they do this??? It's a clear replacement for the Creevy brothers, I WANT THEM BACK!!!! We should start a petition, who is with me??? lol
Seriously, what do you think happened to the actor who portrayed Colin Creevy??
xD
D.A
haha! i know what you mean about the PoA scene too....they could have put in an actual scene *sighs*...oh well....

I dont actually mind that this person has replaced colin creevy (if that is infact true) the only thing i have a problem with is that why didnt they keep the name colin?.....why did they have to bring an entirely new character??....they never cease to amaze me with some of the things they do!! blink.gif

D.A
lavender brown
you know the black guy you were talking about maia_potter, are you sure its not dean thomas?? because he is definatley black. i will have to watch the movies again to be sure who your talking about though.

i presume the guy who played colin didnt want to do it anymore, why i have no idea. shame...
D.A
hey there lavender brown no need to watch the film....look here are some pictures of the guy from PoA and Dean thomas they are completely different people:

IPB ImageAlfred Enoch plays Dean Thomas
IPB ImageAnd i think his name is Ricky Sahota...but im not completely sure about that smile.gif

Id thought id share that with you guys...because i saw somewhere else on here people think the guy in PoA is dean thomas but its not!.....

Anyways...yea i reckon that maybe the creevy brothers didnt want to do it anymore oh well..*sighs* unsure.gif
mjane95
I like the first Dean Thomas.I think if ''Nigel'' did get a part like that his name should be Dennis so that would make reference to the books. But it shouldn't ben that important. BTW where did all the others go? Such as Winky, Mrs Weasley,Ludo etc!
D.A
that boy from PoA isnt the new dean because Alfred Enoch (dean thomas in the movies) is also in that scene he is sitting with neville the one that talks about the grim is just some random boy in gryffindor!

well i think it was really pointless getting this new guy nigel...seriously why create a new character ???..if he had replaced colin...then why not just call him colin?? blink.gif mellow.gif

do you mean in the GoF??...i dont know i think they had to cut alot of characters out because they try to keep the movie a certain length ....it would have been good to see them i think though sad.gif

D.A
Spencer Potter
This Nigel character sounds to much like a Colin Creevey just put him in. But Nigel does look like Colin Creevey a bit don't he? So I can say the least that I am confused.
D.A
I reckon the original colin creevy didnt want to come back or couldnt for some reason so they cast this "nigel" character instead....

thats all well and good but for the life of me why they changed his name is beyond me dry.gif

D.A
Spencer Potter
They are going to need Colin in the 6th book aren't they? Wasn't he supposed to be the beater or I am just stupid and forgot who the names were? dang it. Need to re-read again.
D.A
hmmm im not sure that he was a beater....

but he was in the DA i think...but again "nigel" has been seen in the picture of the DA and i dont think i saw colin in there sad.gif

D.A mellow.gif
Moon(I luv you Luna)
I think Nigel was ment to be Denis creevy. but chnaged his name or something. but i agree-what the heck were they thinking when they put him in there?

He has nothing whatsoever to do with the plot-he's not even in the books. I just call him Denis in my mind. happy.gif
Miss Minerva Mcgonagall
So happy to have found this post! Why did they introduce the stupid Nigel kid? He isn't even in HP! Why do they do this? They did it with the coloured kid in PoA too, its so pathetic of them. The guy that played Nigel could just has easily have been Dennis Creevey, Colin's brother, or they could have put Colin in there.
And what frustrates me even more is that this Nigel guy is actually in the next film in the DA. They've cut half the people who were in the DA out and yet they put some kid who was never in it in the first place in there?
So it's not completely relevant to the plot and shouldn't be a big deal. But it's completely annoying.
~.:hogwarts.bound:.~
Wow, I didn't even notice him! Then again, I've only seen the movie once... (*sniffs* awh... I'm a bad mega-fan!) but that's pretty funny that he's inn all those useless scenes where he shouldn't be... hahahahahaha maybe he was like the director's son or something!! tongue.gif
