BiggestHPFanEver
Hmmmmmmm...... probably the person who has just joined Harry Potter, unless he has died(nno offence.)

MOD EDIT: One line posts are not permitted on the forums

I really hope it's not Gambon who played Dumbledore in the past two movies. I thought he was terrible. If I could, I would have the first Dumbledore come back, but it's impossible to raise the dead. I just hope that Gambon gets cut though.
El Barto
I think Gambon will stay, or it will come out wierd for movie-goers since there will be three different people playing Dumbledore. Not that that matters.

I thought Richard Harris was great, he was pretty much how I saw Dumbledore in my imagination...however, I don't think he would have handled the battle scenes well...not that they were huge or anything. Know what I mean? Gambon just needs to read the books and he'll be good, or the director needs to read the books...whichever happens first.
Just the Droobles
Gambon is returning, so there's nothing really any of us can do about it. I don't think it is necessarily Gambon's fault he did such a terrible job. It might have helped if he had read the books, but I don't think Richard Harris did either. I think it is all in the direction and tips of the director. I personally didn't like Mike Newell, so I'm hoping Yates will give him a clearer idea of what Dumbledore is supposed to be.
Ygraine
Am i the only one who likes Gambon? sad.gif I think he made a great DD in the 3rd film. Although i do admit he wasn't as good in the 4th one, but i think that has something more with the direction than Gambon himself. He's a great actor and i think he looks a lot mor like i imagined DD.

Even though Richard Harris was also a great actor... and singer 'MacArthur Park is melting...someone left the cake out in the rain I don't think that I can take it 'Cause it took so long to bake it. And I'll never have that recipe again ' (yes they are the words, and no apprently it's not about Cake... sad.gif )

Anyway, he was too frail to be a perfect DD, of cousre he did have Cancer, so one can't expect him to be jumping around and the like. But DD, even though he was old, has never been desribed as Frail, but often Harry has had to run to catch up with him, so...

I think Michael Gambon with maybe some better direction can be better. But then again in this film he;s meant to be a bit weird, and the like so...
Just the Droobles
No, you're not alone. I did like Gambon in the third movie. That's why I blame it on Mike Newell. I don't see why there would be a reason an actor would just change like that unless they were directed to do so. I'm hoping it was Mike Newell and Yates will be an improvement and tell Gambon how Dumbledore is really suposed to be so I will be able to be sad when he kicks it in the sixth movie.

And to be really specific, awesome Richard Harris, who I adored in Camelot, died of Hodgkin's Disease, which is cancer. But you are right, he can't exactly jump around, and I don't know if he would be able to do some of the stuff in the upcoming movies because he was old and ill, but I do miss him. sad.gif
smee
I really liked Richard Harris, he was an awesome 'wise DD'. What I mean is he got across the old, wise, calm, omnipotent DD; which is what DD is like in the first two or three books; God like, possibly because Harry is so young and looks up to him so much. He didn't get acroos the weird, kooky, funny side of DD very well though; which Gambon does a lot better. In the later books DD is seen as a lot more human; he makes quite a few mistakes, some of them rather large and I think Gambon will do this well; as long as he's directed well dry.gif .

I really didn't like the scene where DD grabbed (practically attacks IMOH) Harry and asked him whether he put his name in the GoF. That's not DD at all; he's much calmer than that.
RAB
I can not seem to stay away from this topic. In movie three, that a few people posted they like, I thought was the worst of the films. Basically because of the artsy stuff the director tried to carry off, Ok we get it, time turner. Anyway, I think Dumbledore was the worst here. Again I am sorry to be repeating myself, but he just does not seem to like kids. He smacked Ron's cast, I swear every time I see that I cringe, not laugh. Because Dumbledore goes out of his way to make sure none of his students are hurt, why would he on purposely hurt one of them.

Anyway, about reading books, we all think he should read them, we think all the cast should read them. The fact is there are people who do not read the amount of books we do. However, there are incredible audio books, that are fun to listen to in the car, on long trips.... It is not hard to get into the story.

On his interview he tells a kid to "*@!$ off", when the kid asks for an autograph from him, 'Gandolf'. This is my issue. No one should tell a kid that if they get it wrong, if you ask me, this guy needs to go to Hollywood with his ego and stay there. We need a new Dumbledore, I do not think it would weird out the movie goers, I think it would be a welcome relief.

Note: the word that is filtered above is not what you think it is. Read the interview. http://www.empireonline.com/interviews_and...iew.asp?IID=365
I know this should be on the other thread, in the last movie area, I just could not help myself.
Louise
Guys, we already have a thread discussing Michael Gambon as Dumbledore and it's here, so if you could please keep the discussion concerning how much better Harris was and whether or not you're happy with Gambon to the existing thread please.

I'm tempted to close this one, because this is the way the conversations always go in threads like this, but I'll leave it for the moment with the assumption that you can play with ideas as much as you like until the official announcement is made, then it can be closed. Please stay on topic though, yeah? wink.gif

Dumbledore's Widow
I'm not particularly fond of Michael Gambon as Dumbledore. But then, no one can really replace Richard Harris in my opinion anyway. Off the top of my head, I can't think of a British actor that can replace him. So, I believe that Gambon will return in the role.

I wonder how Sean Connery would play the part? happy.gif
NightDance
I think Michael Gammon is great as Dumbledore, (although I do
miss Richard Harris). Mr.Gammon the voice, attitude, style, presence,
talent and personality necessary to portray Dumbledore. I think he
will finish out the series (God willing his health stays fine). smile.gif
Capricorn
Anyone but Sean Connery! tongue.gif Sorry, I can't stand him. He's past his prime - and we really don't need another ego floating around, especially if the owner of that ego doesn't even read the books! You can't think of another British actor? What about Ian McKellen?
priori_incantatem
A lot of people say Michael Gambon is terrible, but he's pretty much how I imagined Dumbledore. I think he'll stay with us until the seventh movie. (Unless he dies of course, but he looks like he'll hang on a while longer.)
NightDance
I've always liked Michael Gambon, he is just how I pictured
Dumbledore would be. But if anything were to happen to him (God
forbid smile.gif ) I think Ian McKellan would be a good replacement.

But I like Gambon and I hope he stays for the rest of the series. smile.gif
andyandyandy
what are all you'se on about. Michael Gambon was like the worst actor 4 dumbledoor, not calm enough 4 the job. hope its someone else next time. i think gandi should well be the next dumbledoor
you know get a mix of lotr nd hp going lol
Capricorn
Lol, for a moment there I thought you meant Mahatma Ghandi! Must say, can't imagine him obliging us in that respect, but he is a dumbledore-ish type of guy!

Anyway, HP and LOTR are the coolest, so I'd love Ian McKellen!
andyandyandy
they should change his name to ganbledoor. nah im kidding on. but that is 1 hell of a beast idea. tongue.gif
Omerus_Banning
I think Gambon is fine as Dumbledore. I was partial to Richard Harris, but...

Ian McKellen would be brilliant, but I think with the right direction that Gambon can really shine. I most recently saw Sir Ian on Coronation Street as a con-man/would be writer... He was brilliant!

So, Gambon is my man these days. I think Yates will make him better...
Piano Man
If Sir Michael Gambon were to not to come back, the only two other British actors that I think would do as well as Richard Harris would be: Ian McKellan or Christopher Lee. That's all that I've got to say.
Granger 92
Richard harris was the best 1. but the new guy is ok. i'm just used 2 the old dumbledore n i think he's a lot more of the DD i imagined
mrblue
Ian McKellan should play dumbledore
HPFan792
I think Gambon will be back for OOtp.I have to admit i am not that big a fan of his though. sorry!I liked Harris the best i think he is the best Dumbledore.
Sirius.James
Ugh. I reeeeaally don't like Gambon as Dumbledore in GoF. I suppose it's mostly the director's fault, but I just think Harris even looked the part more than Gambon. He was very slender and his nose was slim, and perfect for the description. He was really old, yet appeared perfectly capable of defending himself [though, in real life I'm sure he was kind of frail : /]. He also had that perfect calmness in his voice that I absolutely loved. He was the way I imagined Dumbledore in my head. And I felt like he seemed closer to Harry, or, moreso had a love for Harry.

Dumbledore's one of my most favorite characters, and Gambon doesn't portray him well for people who haven't read the books. He's not warm, or calm. He's also not very slim, heh. When he got angry at Harry in GoF, I wanted to sink into my chair. It just made me mad. mad.gif

I wish Harris was still here to play the part of Dumbledore, it'd be so much better. I just can't think of anyone else to play the part. I know Ian McKellan really gets into his parts, and probably would actually read up on the character and do it exquisitely. But, he's already played Gandalf, and if they were to switch Dumbledores again it would be pretty tacky.

SO, I just hope the director actually knows what he's doing this time with the character.

Ian McKellen would be awesome, but after Patrick Stewart expressed interest in acting in a Potter film, I so wanted him to play Dumbledore! Gambon's okay -- he has Dumbledore's playful side down -- but he lacks that air of respect and dignity that I've associated with Dumbledore. The movies haven't been the same since Gambon took over. Stewart for Dumbledore!
amanda1212
No one can replace Richard Harris. And from the past 2 movies I do not think that Micheal Gambon is doing a great job. He's a talented actor but I repeat, no one can replace Richard Harris. But it is official that Micheal Gambon will return as Dumbledore in the OotP
joeyjoejoe
I thought Gambon did a good job as Dumbledore in Prisoner. However, in Goblet, he was way too angry. As for actor suggestions, Ian McKellan would do a good job. In the office scene in Phoenix, Gambon would be like "HEY!, WHAT ARE YOU DOING BREAKING MY STUFF?!!!!!?!?! I'LL KILL YOU!!!!!" Not a great Dumby.
hermionefan891
i didn't even know they switched actors for dumbledore. huh.gif

[Mod Edited]

though, i did notice that dumbledore's acting was a bit [worse]

[Mod Edit] Hiya, I've contacted you by PM. smile.gif You can read the PM by clicking on the "view new owls" link.

mad.gif Now I don't know where this rumor started, but I heard that Jim Carey might be in one of the next few movies.

I don't know where the source of this came from, but I was uterly shocked when my friend had told me this, and that he was going to be Dumbledore because "he can die really well"
gaburdette
Well ShinyBroomstick, I think that is one rumor we can dispel right now. Besides being a horrible choice, Jim Carey is Canadian and therefore ineligible for any role in the HP movies. All cast members must be UK citizens and have a natural English accent.

Gambon has been ok but I was disappointed in his GoF perfromance. It did not seem like he had the essence of Dumbledore down. Seeing as Dumbledore is a major fan favorite, any deviation from character is going to be noticed and not appreciated. I was very disappointed after reading a recent interview where he stated he learned of his character's death from a reporter. For such a big role, I do not think it is too much to ask that the actors read the books to better understand the role they are playing. This is not some low budget indie production. OotP will be the #1 movie or close to it in 2007 when it comes out. It deserves a little more effort from the actors.

I can see both Ian McKellen or Patrick Stewart in the role. Ian brings the baggage of Gandolf with him. May be hard seeing him as Dumbledore and not Gandolf. Patrick Stewart is a very versitile actor and I think he can do a great job. He will need a good wig though. biggrin.gif

Personaly I think none of the past "dumbledores" has lived up to my expectations... My Dumbledore is like... um... it's really hard to explain. But I liked the first actor better, he was kinda wierd, and Dumbledore should be that but charismatic and a bit angry at the same time... Like someone wrote before, he must look good in the battling scenes, and I don't think he would. Anyway, I don't care who plays Dumbledore, if it's someone better I'll be happy, but if it is the same as the last movies, I'll... Well he's already been in these last movies so he can't make more harm than he already has...

You've nailed it in one great post. We have never seem Dumbledore lose control in any of the 6 books (physically or emotionally, even when he shows signs of anger). Gambon is a great actor, but I think he will have to work hard to give us the "older" side of DD..

Also, when I watch him play DD, I can still see many of his other characters (especially "Albert" from the The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover and his Layer Cake performance)... he has plated so many bad guys it's a bit difficult to believe he is the all good guy Dumbledore. Richard Harris definately carried the omnipotence, and I can picture him more than Gambon duel w/ Voldemort at the Ministry, as even there his spell casting is with"lzy flicks" of his wand.. DD is so powerful he doesnt need to be that animated .. anyway, as has been said, we can't raise the dead.. its a pity tho'
besty
im nt saying gombon is bad its just reli he had a strageness about him and he was what i really pictured dd as:(
Mithcoriel
Augh, I really hope Gambon will be better in the next movie!
I thought he wasn't that bad in Film3, but Dumbledore's wisdom was kinda ridiculed there. I mean, how he says "Let Harry sleep. When we dream we're in a world of our own blabla", I just kinda couldn't take that serious. It sounded like a token-wise saying from someone who just wants to sound cool. And when he pats Ron's cast, Gah! That's so dorky! Dumbledore isn't a dork who doesn't notice if he hurts someone! (Although, I admit, his reaction after the time travel "Did what? Good night." was kinda cool)

In the fourth movie, his aggressive behavior was horrible! mad.gif I really hope someone does something about that.
To be fair, I'll also say what I liked: I liked how you could tell AD likes Harry, these little clues that he cares about him. And the scene with his candy, before the pensieve scene, was good too.

But, am I the only one who is seriously bothered with the costume? Does anyone else here think it looks ridiculous how his beard is tied together, and how he wears such a flat hat? No offence, but that hat looks like it's a cork and he's the bottle. Okay, granted, not "every" Dumbledore would look bad with one of those. I've seen fanart where Dumbledore actually looks good with such a hat. But Gambon does not..
But I think JKR wrote on her site somewhere that she visited the set and that "Gambon looked good in his new robes", so, here's hopin...**crosses fingers**

LOL, exactly! In another forum I visit we also joked about that, that Dumbledore will probably grab Harry by the collar, shake him, and say "IT'S TIME, HARRY, FOR ME TO TELL YOU WHAT I SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU FIVE YEARS AGO!" Ugh. rolleyes.gif

I thinkn that Richard Harris was the perfect Dumbledore. In the books Dumbledore is calm and is all knowing. I think Harris did a fantastic job of capturing that, and he even seemed capable of properly portraying that scary intensity that Dumbledore had when he came to the ministry of magic.
I think that Michael Gambon, although a fantastic actor, doe not potray Dumbledore in that manner, and instead has a rash and arrogant portrayal for Dumbledore. For example, the scene in The Goblet of Fire when Harry's name comes out of the goblet and Dumbledore takes him into that room and roughhouses him. That was definitely something the Dumbledore in the book would NOT have done. Obviously nothing can be done to change this casting choice at this point, but it's a shame that Richard Harris couldn't have been there till the end because he would have done the character exceptional justice.

I definatly agree on this one. The first time i saw the prisoner of azkaban, i saw Dumbledore, and i said out loud, WHO'S HE??? I prefered Richard Harris. His was exactly how i imagined Dumbledore to be. I don't like the scene in the gof movie when he practically throttles harry. He would never do that in the books.
Oh and isn't Dmbledore supposed to be ''tall and thin, with a long white beard'?????
pettigrew
would all of you lay off gambon already. we have heard three years of constant complaints. so he doesn't look like dumbledore. boohoo. they will never look like you want them to. face it. the only thing that bothered me about him was the one scene when he gets angry. but dd probably gets angry, he was human. everyone leave gambon alone. as if you could do better.

MOD EDIT: Excuse me, but I think you need to tone yourself done a bit here. You have no right to speak to any other members like that. That is a sure fire way of getting on the bad side of people here. Express yourself in a more gentle way.

Heya pettigrew! smile.gif I'm sending you an owl in a moment, which you can access on the top right of the page by clicking where it says '1'Owl waiting'. Hope to hear from you soon! smile.gif

On the topic of this thread - I'm less worried about Gambon's appearance than I am of his way of portraying Dumbledore. Many people have said it, and I agree, that he makes Dumbledore much too aggressive.

I'm reading HBP again, and Dumbledore is way calmer in his most stressful year in canon than Gambon made him in GoF. I shudder to think how the next movies will be if a proper director doesn't get hold of him... ph34r.gif
potter19
michael gambon has been cast for the movie
yroggid cirdec
I don't like Michael. I mean really, whats up with the accent? He sounds Irish to me. Dumbledore is suppose to be wise, kind. Not a crazy lunatic like in the Goblet of Fire. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if he still is the Dumbledore for the 5th movie. It would make sence. But lets hope that he learns how to act like the REAL Dumbledore.

another dumbledoor
how many are there going to be?!

what do you all think??
After the Burial
Gambon is still casted as Dumbledore for Order of the Phoenix. This pretty much guarantees that he will play Dumbledore for Half Blood Prince as well. Bringing in a new actor, so he will die in that movie, is silly. Whether we like Gambon or not, he is the Dumbledore of the movies, now.
L0vetheTwins
I like Gambon but not as much as the first casted dumbledore sad.gif but i know for a fact he is going to be the dumbledore for the rest of the movies just because he is doing a good job smile.gif
D.A
I think that Michael is a great actor but i think Richard Harris was a better DD he is exactly what i pictured DD to be sad.gif

I was kinda shocked in the way he portrayed DD in GoF where he kinda attacked harry!

But i think all he needs to do is calm his character down a bit...other than that they should keep Michael it would be silly to replace him...but he's being cast for the OotP so its all good!! happy.gif
omg.teh.harry
In the movies i think they had a different dirctor for the third and fourth movies..
so if they got a different director for the fifth one he might make gambon act more like the dumbledore in the book.
because gambon is a for sure i think.

ian mclellan would take away the whole lord of the rings effect by playing dumbledore.
xrosexdoctorx
erm hello??? Person who said dumbledore will hang on till da seventh book, READ THE SIXTH!

i saw the trailer today (attached to happy feet), and there is a very short segment (the whole trailer is only about 45 secs long prob) in the trailer showing DD addressing the ministry of magic...and it is most definately Gambon (the same fellow as the last two movies).

i will agree that he isn't my favorite either...but, i've warmed up to him over time. the way he plays DD is a bit childish---so much so that the power/awe of the great wizard doesn't come through as much as i think it should...but, he is a good actor, and if he can switch into a more "serious" DD-mode when he needs to then i will be happy...

i'm very much looking forward to the scene at the end of OOTP (i believe the name of the chapter in the book is 'The only One he ever Feared')...basicly a showdown between voldemort and DD in the MoM.

The voldemort actor is certainly 150% up to the task based on his performance from the end of GoF. We will see about Gambon. I think he will do a great job, but its hard to tell given the way he played DD in the other movies; a comparibly much more light hearted personality then is needed for OoTP, although the end of GoF sees a bit of Gambon's seroius side...and it definately is there; if he wants it to be.
Moon(I luv you Luna)
I absolutly LOVE the dumbledore from the first two movies.

He looked more like dumbledore, and ... well, felt like dumbledore!

Like, Dumbledore in the books, shows a sweet, trustworthy, gental man, with grace, a sense of humor, and full of love.

The new dumbledore (Gambon) is jerky and ... well, it's hard to say, it's just he doesn'r portray dumbledore as i would see him. Like he's too stronge and powerful. Dumbledore' ment to be graceful and gental ... yet he can be stronge and powerful at the same time.

Like when your mum gets you to do something you don't want to do without shouting at you laugh.gif

I don't know ... if only we could bring back the old dumbledore from the dead. sad.gif
I Love Sirius
Richard Harris was the best Dumbledore in the movies. He was calm and wise and he acted like I thought Dumbledore should act. Gambon on the other hand is waaaaaaaaaaay to aggressive he almost killed Harry in the Goblet of Fire scene where he's asking Harry if he put his name in the cup. I was very sad when Harris died and I wish he could come back to life to finish up the movies. Gambon is just not what I thought Dumbledore should be like.

I am 100% sure than Michael Gamdon is going to be playing Dumbledore. If you want confirmation I am including a link. Click Here to view it.
