I also think that the sorting hat has a way of knowing things that it doesn't say, things that influence its decision. It's hard to explain, but I think it's the reason why Hermione was put in Gryffindor when, at the time, she was perfect for Ravenclaw. Kind of like a destiny thing. The hat put Sirius in Gryffindor because he needed to be friends with James, Remus, and Peter so that everything could work out in then end. I don't know, it makes sense in my own head.
Destiny.. hmm.. intersting. Could be. But then again, there are always logical reasons behind why the hat chose a particular house. Hermione, for instance. Yes, she is incredibly smart, but she is also very courageous and always willing to face danger in order to help out her friends. I guess logic and destiny go together here..
Wow, I've confused myself even more. Sorry if I've done the same to you

Ah no, welcome to Gryffindor HP_RULES!. I agree with what both HP_RULES and bluezz said. I agree with most of you actually. I wonder if JKR is going to enlighten us at all as to why Sirius was put into Gryffindor in the 7th book. I bet that much will be explained. What about Lily Evans, why do we think that she was put into Gryffindor? I think that her along with Lupin also could have been in Ravenclaw because they were both really smart.

Ok.. Well, I think the hat doesn't chose based on the certain things a particular person has done, but rather on the actions that person is capable of doing. It looks at the nature of that person. Thus, those who might haven't yet done anything noble and incredibly brave will still be sorted into Gryffindor. That way, Lily was directed to Gryffindor and as we find out later, she belonged there. (She did sacrifice herself for her son

) The same goes for Lupin, and Sirius, for that matter.
HP_RULES!
Jul 20 2006, 05:55 PM
I agree with bluezz about why Lily was put in Gryffindor, she had the qualities that a Gryffindor has the probably out-ruled her brain. This whole sorting hat thing is really confusing. The same with Lupin, Sirius, and James (they said that Sirius and James were some of the smartest in the year, they did learn to become animagus' by their 5th year). I really hope that Jk Rowling expalins the whole sorting hat concept better because I've gone and seriously confused myself, but I guess that soemtimes some of your qualities make it so that the Sorting Hat could justify putting you in more then one house, it just comes down to what qualities you have that are most important.
lucky ducky
Jul 20 2006, 06:06 PM
I beleive that the sorting hat looks deeper into a person by just their personality. There probably is something magical inside you that tells the sortig hat where to sort you. Of course it also looks at your personality, but there must be something else going on to inlfuence it's decisions.
Maybe it is personality. Ok I'm getting myself confused, so I'll stop

Jul 22 2006, 03:22 AM
Ok, Well I agree with all of you!!

I guess that makes sense as to why Lily and Lupin were put into Gryffindor. Since we are all offically confused, maybe we should try and veer off the sorting hat topic because we will probably just get even more confused. I too hope that JKR sheds more light onto the whole sorting hat idea and the marauders in the 7th book.
HP^4^Life

I agree with lucky ducky, obviously it looks deep down inside you, its not gonna just choose you because of the questions it asks. Also I hope JKR finishes all this relationship stuff.
james pickles
Jul 22 2006, 10:46 PM
Well..whatever you choose then you will get put into that house. But I think the Sorting Hat looks at your abilities and tells you what you will be best in and where it thinks you should go. But ultimately it is your own choice that decides.
HP_RULES!
Jul 23 2006, 02:39 AM
What questions does the Sorting Hat ask? But anyway, I'm thoroughly confused so lets just get off the sorting hat topic. I agree that JK Rowling does need to move away from the relationship stuff. It's nice to a certain extent, but in the HBP I thought that there was a little bit too much of it. She should still include it, it just needs to be toned down a little bit.

Jul 23 2006, 11:54 AM

No it wasn't. I was expecting Ron and Hermione to get together in this book and start snogging, there wasn't enough of it

. Oh maybe your right, but it's a matter of opinion isn't it cause I am a person who loves romance in books. If I ever write a story it has to have a little fluff and romance. But I guess you don't like alot of it. I think she should still do it. But I think she over did it abit because these are teenagers we are talking about, there is no limit to over did it. Teenagers with raging hormones love to kiss and cuddle and snog and flirt. That is why she put it I think. I hope she does put alot of romance in this book. We are going to need it, I bet this will be the darkest book yet. It will need a fair bit of romance.
Arya
Jul 23 2006, 01:17 PM
I disagree with you HP_RULES, I mean everybody expected to see Ron and Hermione together in this book. It's a story about teenagers and it's quite normal. Besides many people like romance just like james pickles and me ( honesly I would like so much to see Ron and Hermione together just like Harry and Ginny

).
Anyway, this book is quite dark, so scenes like Ron and Hermione's jealousy are necessary to make a bit more light the story which, on the contrary, would be too dark.
HP_RULES!
Jul 23 2006, 05:25 PM
I guess you're right about the whole teenagers thing, I just don't like what all the romance did to Hermione. I like the Harry/Ginny thing and I was waiting for Hermione/Ron, but the Ron/Lavender thing was half the book and to me a bit overdone. I got kind of tired of listening about Ron and Lavender making out and Hermione getting jealous and teary over it. I never would have pictured Hermione like that. I know she is growing up, but still. I like how she wrote about Harry/Ginny when they finally got together, it was the perfect amount of romance. Oh, and I just want to say that I love the whole Tonks/Lupin relationship, it's so cute!

I like romance, I just thought it was a little bit much and I completely agree that it's going to be necessary in the 7th book.

Okay..To start off I would like to welcome
HP_RULES! to Gryffindor!
I have to agree with
Arya and
James about the omance in the books and, like them, I am a romantic!

I think with a book like HP it should have a sense of romance as we are teenagers and I believe it sheds some light on how others are affected by the tormenting "dating ritual"

Yip..I sound completely bonkers, but I just think that the book is targeted to us and thats one of the reasons why it is...
I was also expecting Ron and Hermione to get together in this book, but I wasn't discouraged cos there was alot of awkward tension which resulted in one of those funny moments like most of us have with our crushes!I think that is like a build up to something a bit bigger than little arguments with two people who seem perfect for each other
I have to agree with
Arya about the jealousy or any types of emotions, they actually lighten the story and prevent he story from becoming dreary. It also allows the reader to take their focus off the dark parts and maybe focus on aspects that they can relate to
I also have to say that I like the idea of Lupin/Tonks relationship. They are perfect for each other.I hope they get married...Can you imagine their children?...*Hmmm...Thinking in process*....
Well, thats me...
OH!I just had a
FANTASTIC idea!
Here goes...Maybe us Gryffindors should come up with a motto or something, like: Through Thick and Thin...Something catchy...
I don't know..Just a suggestion
Now,thats me...
Peace out!

Hi everyone...HAven't posted for a while...
I agree with luckyfish about Ron and Hermione getting together, because after the hints JK Rowling made, I would be disappointed if they didn't.
I also agree with pretty much everyone, and if there isn't a little romance in the 7th book, it's going to get a little too dark and depressing. Just as long as there isn't another Ron/Lavendar ralationship. Although, we've all had that couple that your're friends with, and you sometimes feel embarassed to be in public with them. Or is that just me?
One thing I loved most about the 6ht book was that Tonks and Lupin got together. I thought it was perfect timing, too, because after all the depressing stuff that happened, we get another happy couple. I would adore to see them get married. I just hope that the rumor of Tonks or Lupin dying isn't true. That would make me and some others really sad.
It would be a good idea, luckyfish, to have some kind of motto for us wonderful Gryfinndors....
hello again...
Not to change the subject, but did anyone know that Daniel Radcliffe's

seventeenth birthday was yesterday? I had a little party for him with a few other fans, and we had fun. It was mostely just drooling over pictures of him, but whatever...
Arya
Jul 24 2006, 05:30 PM
Wow! What a good idea!
It would be very fun a motto!
[/quote]
I like the Harry/Ginny thing and I was waiting for Hermione/Ron, but the Ron/Lavender thing was half the book and to me a bit overdone.
I admit, perhaps the relationship between Ron and Lavander is a bit boring because it's a bit too long, but I think it was necesary to have that result on Hermione and thanks this effect we have a clearer idea of Hermione's feelings and not only: in fact we see the reaction of Ron and Harry too.

anyways, i guess i don't have much else to say for the time being. but i will ponder (thats a cool word) the situation and try and come up with a qoute or something that could possibly be of help. ok well thats all for now.

Hmm...Well are we going to have a motto? Cause if so then we should get about five mottos and we all vote on the best motto. Maybe if we all submitted a few mottos each in say the next 5 days for example, a moderator could collect them all and decide on the best five and then we all vote on which we think is the best. What do you think?
Lizzy_Radcliffe
Jul 25 2006, 12:48 AM
That sounds like a good idea, james pickles. But who'll be the moderator? the vote doesn't matter to me, because you all are better at making mottos than I am.
james pickles
Jul 25 2006, 01:06 AM
Well if a moderator reads this and wants to volunteer then I am all for that..or would you like to send PMs to some of the mods to see if they are interested or would you like me to do it? Maybe we should wait to see if a couple more people think the idea is good.
PS. Your avatar rocks Lizzy_Radcliffe.

I think that you should PM some of the mods or you could do it if you want to, I'm sure everyone trusts you! I'd do it but I would probably make the wrong choice. I guess just wait and see what other people think, but do you want to do it?
HPgoldsnitch
Jul 25 2006, 03:19 AM
I think we should PM the mods first to see if any are interested. If not, then my vote is for james pickles since he is the one that thought it up. Ok, so we think ideas, then in 5 days we vote? Is that what was said?

Jul 25 2006, 11:50 AM
Ok..But we need to raise awareness around the forum to let people know about posting a few mottos. We only have four days left. I think it would be good if the submition ended in four days on midnight. What do you think? Hmm, how shall we raise awareness. Could a few people put at the bottom of every post they post PS. Check out Gryffindor House Thread and think of a motto. Or something like that. What do you think? Anyway I will PM a few mods now.

Jul 25 2006, 03:18 PM
Oh goodie, a motto for Gryffindor!
Not to tickle a sleeping dragon, but how about :
Ad fidelis leonem virtus et aequitas
"From [the] steadfast lion, bravery and fairness" is just a poor translation. Virtus means so much more than just bravery. It means bravery, goodness, excellence, worth, virtue and courage -- I can't think of a motto for Gryffindor without virtus in it.
I'm sorry if my Latin is a bit rusty; feel free to correct the tenses if necessary.

I can add it to my signature for a few days, do you want me to? Or I guess I'll just add a PS after every post I do, it'll be a lot easier. Oh, and I think that ending it at midnight after four more days is perfect!
By the way, nice motto Bumblebee!

Wow, good idea, guys

.
Let's see... a motto... a motto...
Is this supposed to be funny or serious?
How about "
Bravery at all costs" or something serious like that.
I know the Hogwarts motto is funny (never tickle a sleeping dragon), but what could we say about a lion? What about "
Never tempt a hungry lion"? That's kind of funny and serious at the same time... Like, don't mess with an vengeful Gryffindor, or something. Just a thought

.

Right I have PMed three mods to judge but I haven't got a reply yet to see if they agree. It is up to you.

I don't know any Latin Bumblebee, but it sounds right to me.

Ok so 4 days at midnight. that would make it the 29th? Ok, I don't have any ideas so far... how should we keep track of all the ideas that have been put forth?
HP_RULES!
Jul 26 2006, 12:09 AM
All right, well, I've put a note at the bottom of each post I've done. I guess that is more effective since not many people read signatures. Oh gosh, I have no idea how we're going to keep track of everyones. If you want I could post everyones ideas together every once in a while, giving them the credit of course. I wouldn't mind compiling them and posting them, that way everyone could see the ideas that have been posted so far. What do you think?

Jul 26 2006, 12:59 AM
I PMed three mods about 9 hours ago and I haven't recieved a reply yet. If I don't get a reply throughout this day then maybe we should start a poll on all the mottos we have recieved in the next...3 days it will be for me seen as it is 2 am right now here. By the way, are we doing it at my country time or someone elses? I dunno. Anyway, we will just see what happens.

Jul 26 2006, 02:02 AM
Good idea with the motto, guys. Personally, I love the one Bumblebee proposed. It's definitely original.
As for how we choose the best one, I don't see why we need the mods. Any person who didn't propose a motto (so they wouldn't be inclined to vote for themselves) can pick 5 or more to go in a poll. Or, if there isn't too many, we can just put all of them in a poll.
HP_RULES!
Jul 26 2006, 02:53 AM
I guess we don't really need a mod, the poll should be fine. I think that's a better idea, that way people can chose for themselves and no pressure is on anybody. How are we going to pick which ones make it to the poll? If everyone picks 5 then it's going to be hard to tally up which ones make it and everything. When can people start chosing their 5? Here are the ones so far:
James Pickles:
Loyalty values bravery.
Lions Lead the Lions
For one who loves, shall recieve all the rewards.
HP^4^Life:
Cant spell Gryffindor without Bravery or Loyalty
lucky ducky:
Brave is what we aim for
Spiders don't scare us. Well, maybe Ron.
Bumblebee:
Ad fidelis leonem virtus et aequitas ("From [the] steadfast lion, bravery and fairness")
LilyPotter:
Bravery at all costs
Never tempt a hungry lion
I thought I'd post them together so that people don't have to keep going back through pages in order to read all the proposed mottos.

Jul 26 2006, 03:15 AM
Hermione is one of my most favorite characters and it comes to surprise to some people that she's in Gryffindor, not Ravenclaw (in the books). She may be smart but she's also very brave at the same time. Maybe bravery stands over cleverness. If I were a student at Hogwarts, I'd probably be in Ravenclaw or Gryffindor.
bluezz
Jul 26 2006, 03:24 AM
Well, everyone has 3 more days to submit their suggestions for the mottos. After that, we can start the poll for, say, another 5 days, so there is enough time for all the Gryffindors to vote.
About choosing the motto. If we have 15 or less options, that won't be a problem. We can make up to 15 options per question. If we get more, then any person who has not proposed a motto can pick the ones that make it to the poll (as I've said before).

Truth is I've never been officially sorted, but I hope you'll welcome my input. I personally like Bumblebee's suggestion on the motto because it seems to capture the spirit of the Gryffindors and because she already has a latin translation (or an english translation of her latin motto, I should say).
I also think the Gryffindor seal is the most appropriate logo.
By the way, hermione rox, if you haven't already, you're welcome to get yourself sorted in the

Jul 27 2006, 03:29 PM
I was thinking.. Maybe instead of having someone chosing the best mottos to go in the poll, we can put all the mottos there, probably into several poll questions (1 question = 15 options) and just chose the winner by the number of votes, not by percentage. This would be more fair.
Actually, we can do that without even creating a poll. Just vote in this thread.

A lot of polls we're going to have, huh?

I think we should use the logo from the Gryffindor quarter of the Hogwarts crest. We might incorporate Godric Gyffindor's sword. Does anyone here have knowledge about heraldic devices? Colours are very important too. Jo Rowling described the Gryffindor colours as red and gold.
HP^4^Life
Jul 27 2006, 06:21 PM
Yah I can definatly do that, you may not know, but it always depends on the picture, kind of like hair styling.. you need to know before you do. So if someone could send me a pic of Godrics sword or just post it here I can do it, or I can get it myself.. But, whatever works.
bluezz
Jul 27 2006, 07:06 PM
For all of those who want to try and design a logo for Gryffindor. I found some pictures of Godric's sword that can be easily incorporated into a logo.
Original; Hogwarts BackgroundWhite Background pic - Heaven for those who have trouble with cutting out images neatly.
Variations of these can easily be found online; just google "Godric sword."
I just searched the images on google, but there are probably more somewhere on the web. I'll do a more extensive search when I have more time. But for now, feel free to experiment with these pictures
