It comes as no surprise that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows marked this year's top-selling book online, according to a list released today by Amazon.

Amazon's second best-selling product? The Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix DVD, which was released last month in the UK and earlier this month in the US.

Amazon's spokesman said, "It has very much been the year of Harry Potter, as is shown by the fact that he features in our number one and number two best-selling products. It has been the global phenomenon of 2007 and you are still going to get probably another couple of Christmases which will see Harry Potter high on the chart because there are another couple of DVDs still to come."

Warner Home Video has released numerous short videos from the fifth Harry Potter film, Order of the Phoenix. The Snitch has the videos listed in various download-ready formats: the first set are various short scenes from the film itself; and the second set contains footage from deleted scenes that will be on the two-disc DVD set, many interviews with the cast and crew, and never-before-seen behind-the-scenes look at the film (which include how the fight between Voldemort and Dumbledore was shot, and how Grawp came to life on-screen).

MSN also released a short inside look as to how the kiss between Harry and Cho was shot, including take-by-take action on-set with David Yates and his actors, with comments from Daniel Radcliffe, Katie Leung, and producers David Barron and David Heyman on the scene itself.

Videos of OOTP deleted scenes

Posted By Ana on 11-15-07 @ 6:05 PM - 18 comments - Link
MTV has posted a few deleted scenes from Order of the Phoenix, which include an elongated segment in Professor Trelawney's classroom when Umbridge inspects her, and when Ron comes to fetch Harry for dinner at the very end of the movie. There is also a behind-the-scenes look at how the Hall of Prophecies scene came to life, showing the six actors walking through an entirely empty green-screen room, and how the final product in the movie was put together.

The article goes into detail as to why David Yates chose to edit Snape's worst memory out of the film, stating that, "We had a lovely actress play Lily, [and] we may bring her back. But by introducing Lily and the Lily/Snape plot, that back story, we complicated it too much. We had to cut it."

David Yates speaks about Dumbledore's outing

ESMAS were fortunate enough to interview Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and director David Yates this past weekend during the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix DVD press launch. The Snitch was kind enough to translate it into English, from which it can be seen what David Yates had to say about Dumbledore being outed by JK Rowling last month:

David Yates spoke about the "scandal" that came after Jo's revelations about Dumbledore sexuality.

"I think it's great that the author revealed the sexuality of Dumbledore, who is a very rich and complex character. In the US it was a huge scandal, but not here in Europe."

Daniel mentions that scenes with Ron and Lavender have not taken place yet; Rupert talks about how it was like to work with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuaron; and Emma compares herself to Hermione in that they are both very fond of school.

Another report from the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix DVD press launch is now online, courtesy of the Edmonton Sun. Emma Watson was interviewed by the publication, voicing her outrage and indignation over how many people, fans and otherwise, have reacted to the news of Albus Dumbledore being outed as gay by JK Rowling last month.

Emma stated that, "I couldn't believe what I was reading," as well as, "[this] is the 21st century! I just could not believe the amount of fuss that was being made over Dumbledore being gay."

As for her own reaction to the news, she said that, "I never actually thought about it before but, when she said it, I thought, 'Oh, yeah, that makes sense.'"

Also, a report from the launch is available online, which mentions that Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Bonnie Wright, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch, Katie Leung, Imelda Staunton, and director David Yates were joined by Emma for interviews. The journalist who met with the actors does give their personal opinions of the actors (both good and bad), but mentions details of the various sets in which the actors were interviewed (some of which have already been taken down for the sixth film). OOTP breaks $900 million mark

Posted By Matthew on 09-02-07 @ 4:04 PM - 19 comments - Link
The Order of the Phoenix movie jetted past $900 million at the worldwide box office this weekend, becoming only the second film in the franchise to do so (along with Sorcerer's Stone). Its current tally stands at $911 million.

What does this strong showing mean for the movie series? First and foremost, it shows that Harry's popularity has not only been sustained over the past ten years, but has actually increased -- a rare feat for a movie series. Secondly, it means that neither we nor WB will be hearing any nasty whispers that the series is on its profit deathbed (à la Spider-Man), which could've led the studio to pump less money into HBP and HPDH. OOTP's success is good news for Potter fans, as we can confidently expect movies six and seven to be made with the same quality and care as one through five.

In the past week, Order of the Phoenix raked in another $50 million worldwide, raising its box office total so far to $872.6 million, within striking distance of both Chamber of Secrets and Goblet of Fire.

Barring nuclear disaster, OOTP will surpass the $876.7 million gross of Chamber of Secrets by the week's end. It is set to top Goblet of Fire's $892.2 million soon as well, which will position it as the second-highest grossing movie in the series (behind Sorcerer's Stone).

OOTP tops COS at American box office

Order of the Phoenix's $1.6 million haul yesterday brought the fifth film past the second, Chamber of Secrets, in U.S. box office receipts. OOTP has now made $262.7 million domestically.

This means that Phoenix is now the third most successful of the Harry Potter films in the United States. It is likely to surpass Goblet of Fire's $290 million gross in the coming weeks as well, which would make it the most successful of the series behind Sorcerer's Stone.

Weekend OOTP box office update

Over the weekend, Order of the Phoenix increased its worldwide gross from $708 million to $770 million, with a $9 million weekend at the U.S. box office.

Although OOTP topped Prisoner of Azkaban domestically, it is still $20 million shy of beating it out worldwide. The film is also just $1 million short of surpassing the domestic gross of Chamber of Secrets ($262 million).

OOTP tops $700m, surpasses POA in US

Posted By Matthew on 08-03-07 @ 4:54 PM - 11 comments - Link
Today, Order of the Phoenix raised its worldwide gross to $705.5 million, but more importantly, it topped Prisoner of Azkaban in domestic box office totals. OOTP has now made $251.5 million domestically, compared to POA's $249.5 million. It is only $10 million away from passing Chamber of Secrets in the USA, which it certainly has the potential to do this weekend.

While it would be difficult for OOTP to beat Sorcerer's Stone's astronomical take of $317.6 million domestically, we are optimistic that it will top Goblet of Fire's $290 million, the second highest tally so far in the series.

HP special effects team reveals OOTP secrets

The Art Institute Online, a division of The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, recently interviewed Academy Award winners Tim Burke and John Richardson, special effect supervisors on the Harry Potter films. In the interviews, Burke and Richardson discussed behind-the-scenes details on how they helped bring Order of the Phoenix to the big screen. Tim Burke spilled the beans on Voldemort's appearance at the Ministry:

The big fight at the end, in the atrium, is probably the best example because there we have a combination of shots where Voldemort explodes all of the windows in this huge, huge atrium. We had a set which was built, it’s a very large set, where we did a even larger digital extension to it. So we did a lot of it in the computer. Voldemort uses a huge wave of energy to explode all of these glass windows which make up a large proportion of the set.

John Richardson rigged up a practical explosion on the set for us which involved blowing sugar glass windows which we shot with a seven or nine camera set up shot from multiple angles into which we composited some blue screen characters or used some stunt doubles. Because of the scale of the set we had to then extend that set and add on top of that with computer graphics breaking glass in a computer graphics set extension. That scene was a combination of both techniques using both practical effects and CG effects.

During the fight we also have moments where Voldemort creates a serpent, a 60-foot snake, out of fire which attacks Dumbledore and Dumbledore gathers the fire from the snake and throws it back at Voldemort. They are using all of these elemental spells.

Click here to watch or read both interviews. Thanks, Dave!

Animal safety in OOTP filming 'outstanding'

Posted By Matthew on 07-31-07 @ 2:11 PM - 3 comments - Link
The American Humane Association has released its report on the safety of animals in the production of Order of the Phoenix, giving the film an "Outstanding" rating. The report describes in detail how each scene involving animals in the film was shot to ensure their protection. Here's an excerpt:

"Several plates hanging on an office wall show moving pictures of cats playing. One kitten later 'exits' its hanging picture. All the kittens were deemed as healthy upon arrival by the safety rep. The kittens were given several toys to encourage play behavior and filmed in these natural actions. All kitten contact areas were disinfected to ensure the kittens’ safety, and noise in the area was limited. Access to the set and direct contact with the kittens was limited to only necessary crew and the safety rep. Disinfecting foot baths and hand sprays were used by all crew members on the set. Some of the kittens wore simple, comfortable costume pieces. To achieve the action in which the kitten exits its picture, a bait stick was used to encourage the kitten to move off camera. The kittens were rewarded with treats and hugs for their playful actions. All actions were performed in front of a blue screen and later edited in post-production."

The full report can be read here. Thanks to Ian for the tip!

OOTP makes $17.1 million in third weekend

Posted By Matthew on 07-29-07 @ 4:30 PM - 8 comments - Link
In its third weekend at the U.S. box office, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix made $17.1 million, bringing its total domestic total to $241.8 million. For purposes of comparison, here are the third weekend tallies of the previous four films:
Sorcerer's Stone: $23.6m (domestic total: $219.7m)
Chamber of Secrets: $32.1m (domestic total: $200.1m)
Prisoner of Azkaban: $18m (domestic total: $190.9m)
Goblet of Fire: $19.9m (domestic total: $229.3m)
Clearly, then, the film is holding up quite well against its predecessors. It is now a mere $8 million away from passing Prisoner of Azkaban in U.S. ticket sales.

UPDATE: International weekend tallies are now in. OOTP's worldwide gross has shot up to $691.8 million, less than $100 million away from Prisoner of Azkaban's total haul (but still $285 million behind Sorcerer's Stone).

OOTP sees huge second weekend dropoff

As we predicted, Order of the Phoenix has experienced one of the biggest second weekend dropoffs in franchise history, as everyone was at home reading Deathly Hallows instead of out at the movies.

OOTP made an estimated $32.2 million, falling almost 60% and coming in behind I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. And we're still trying to figure out why New Line thought this was a good weekend to release Hairspray, which performed dismally, as much of its target demographic was at home reading Harry Potter.

Behind-the-scenes of OOTP: CGI work

DigitalArts Online has published an insighftul piece on how the special effects wizards behind Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix went about creating both the redesigned centaurs and the Black's house elf, Kreacher. On Kreacher, CG supervisor Ben White said:
"We took an entirely muscle based approach to Kreacher's facial animation system, extending the functionality of the tools we designed for the centaurs and taking them even further, to give him skin that's appropriately soft and stretchy for such an elderly character. We filmed actor Timothy Bateson as he sat in a chair and did his vocal takes, using his facial expressions and mannerisms as reference (although no motion capture was used), and these were incredibly useful for the facial performance.

"But the actual combination of body language, stance, how Kreacher moves around and how he reacts to Harry - that was entirely the creation of our animation team. This subtlety of animation, combined with the sophisticated skin shading and really believable eye lighting gave us something I'm really proud of. It's a beautiful, understated little performance: you feel that you can really see his mind in his eye, like he's a living being."

OOTP could be 'biggest Potter yet,' says WB

Order of the Phoenix is off to the best start yet for any Harry Potter film, Warner Bros. said today, and it might eventually top the incredible $976.5 million made by Sorcerer's Stone in 2001, as some analysts are predicting it will become the fourth-ever billion dollar movie.

Over the weekend, OOTP made another $77.4 million at the U.S. box office, raising its five-day total to $140 million. Internationally, the film has made an additional $190.3 million, bringing its current worldwide gross to an astounding $330.3 million.

"This could end up being the biggest 'Potter' yet," said Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures' president of domestic distribution. "Audiences are enthusiastic and we've got great summer play dates ahead of us." Over the rest of the movie's run in theatres, we will be tracking its latest worldwide box office tallies on the right-hand side of the main page.

OOTP set to top weekend box office

After making $26.2 million at the American box office yesterday, Order of the Phoenix looks set to breeze past Transformers as the most successful movie of the weekend. OOTP averaged an impressive $6,114 per screen on 4,285 screens on Friday, raising its cumulative gross to $88.8 million.

That three-day total is the second best for any movie released on a Wednesday, coming in behind Spider-Man 2's $96.7 million in 2004. It's the fourth best of the Harry Potter series, but considering the first four movies came out on a Friday, that is quite an accomplishment.

Today and tomorrow should also prove very lucrative for the film, but we are expecting a bit of a huge dropoff next weekend, as most every Harry Potter fan will be holed up at home reading Deathly Hallows.

"Fine, I'll try and teach him again!" Snape snarled at Professor Dumbledore.

"Severus, please, for me, don't take all those old wounds that you gained from James out on Harry. Harry is not James - do not blame him for what happened." Dumbledore spoke quietly, but his blue eyes held a warning. Snape sighed in frustration...
