The County Times recently reported that The Limehouse Lamp Company is making lights for one of the Harry Potter rides that will be at The Wizarding World at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida (due to open next year).

The managing director at The Limehouse Lamp Company, Elliott Maurice, has said that the lamps are similar to those seen in and around Hogwarts Castle. Universal wanted the rides and the park to be as authentic as possible, as the look and feel of these rides, and the whole park itself, is important to creating the ultimate Potter experience.

Universal refurbishing rides for HP park

Posted By Matthew on 07-14-08 @ 2:35 PM - 11 comments - Link
The Orlando Sentinel is reporting today that Universal Orlando has closed down an existing ride, shop, and restaurants, including the Flying Unicorn children's roller coaster, the Enchanted Oak Tavern restaurant, the Dragon's Keep store, and the Alchemy Bar, in order to refurbish them for the upcoming Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park. When the park pieces reopen, they will have a Harry Potter twist.

The newspaper writes:

The Enchanted Oak building, which already looked like a magical, mystical place, is now being rebuilt, presumably to resemble a Hogsmeade establishment such as The Three Broomsticks. A seven-story structure of steel girders rising behind a Jurassic Park fence appears to be framework for the castle. Universal officials won't comment, however.

"It's too soon to talk about specifics," spokesman Tom Schroder said.

HP theme park construction underway

Posted By Matthew on 12-02-07 @ 10:01 PM - 21 comments - Link
Jim Hill Media reports today that construction on the upcoming Harry Potter theme park Universal Orlando Resort in Orlando, Florida is now underway. The website has also posted a batch of pictures of the construction site along with some new information about the project. Here's a snippet:
The construction team that Universal has hired are currently in the site prep portion of this project. Meaning that -- now that they've cleared all of the brush in this previously undeveloped part of that theme park -- the workmen are hauling in truckload after truckload of fill. Which is then spread out all over the Hogwarts Castle construction site.

"And why are they doing that?," you ask. Well, once it's been determined that the Universal Orlando Resort has a level working surface which will actually be to support the weight of this several-hundred-ton structure (which is quite a concern in sinkhole-prone Central Florida), then construction can then begin in earnest on Hogwarts Castle. With first the footings & foundation work getting underway in January, which will then be followed by vertical construction on this enormous show building in the late winter/early spring of next year.

According to folks familiar with the various construction phases of this ambitious IOA addition, Universal hopes to have Hogwarts Castle "topped off" by this time next year. Which will be quite a feat. Given that this show building is expected to dwarf the Jurassic Park River Adventure structure with its 85-foot drop that's located to the northeast of this construction site.
The park, called The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, is slated to open in late 2009 or early 2010.

Theme park opening time frame announced

According to a new SEC filing, Universal Studio's upcoming Harry Potter theme park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, will open in Florida between December 15, 2009 and June 30, 2010. Previously, project officials had said that the park would either open in late 2009 or early 2010, but in time for the Deathly Hallows movie, which will hit theatres in the summer of 2010.

The WB/Universal licensing agreement, which is available to the public, reads, "Grand opening means the date on which the themed area is fully operational and open to the public, which is targeted to occur in or about December 15, 2009 but may occur as late as June 30, 2010."

Tom Williams, chairman and CEO of Universal Parks and Resorts, also commented: "We are going to devote more time, more money, more expertise and more executive talent from throughout our entire organization and creative team – as well as from Warner Bros., our partners – to ensure that this entire environment is second-to-none."

Universal, WB announce Harry Potter theme park

Posted By Matthew on 05-30-07 @ 11:47 PM - 19 comments - Link
In a special live webcast from Leavesden Studios tonight, a Universal Studios director and Harry Potter production designer Stuart Craig announced that a Harry Potter theme park will be built in Orlando, Florida in early 2010, just before the release of the seventh movie.

The theme park, called "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter," has been in the works for more than two years. Rumors about a possible Disney theme park have been floating around for even longer than that, but that deal clearly fell through at some point.

JK Rowling has been very involved in this process from the start, according to the Universal Studios director. Stuart Craig, who has worked on all of the Harry Potter movies, then became involved in the design process last November in an effort to add more authenticity to the park. The park will offer "immersive, engaging rides that are filled with story and fantasy," and it will "represent the entire saga, from book one to book seven."

Rumor: Disney still considering HP theme park

Posted By Matthew on 10-16-06 @ 5:01 PM - 56 comments - Link
The rumor that the Walt Disney Company is hoping to construct a Harry Potter theme park has been bandied about for two years now and has been denied by Warner Bros. numerous times. However, Jim Hill Media is reporting today that Disney is still considering the idea and that JK Rowling has signed a letter of intent, which, the site says, gives Disney "the right to begin preliminary development of a theme park-related project featuring the Harry Potter characters."

According to Investor Words, a letter of intent is "a letter from one company to another acknowledging a willingness and ability to do business...a letter of intent is not a contract and cannot be enforced, it is just a document stating serious intent to carry out certain business activities."

Jim Hill Media acknowledges that "negotiations" could easily fall apart at this stage, but considering the inaccuracy of other parts of their report (such as the widely-rumored but not at all official July 7, 2007 release date for book seven) and Warner Bros.'s previous stance on the theme park rumor, it would be wise to take today's report with a grain of salt.

HP theme park rumor: recycled rubbish

Posted By Matthew on 12-21-05 @ 4:51 PM - 0 comments - Link
This report on JimHillMedia.com, in which a friend of the author's quotes an anonymous WB rep who allegedly hinted that Disney had plans to construct a 7-story Harry Potter theme park in the near future, took the media by storm yesterday. A similar rumor surfaced last year, but no new information was released until yesterday.

However, Warner Bros. has informed us that the theme park rumor is rubbish, and said that they have no plans to license the rights for something that massive at this time.

"Fine, I'll try and teach him again!" Snape snarled at Professor Dumbledore.

"Severus, please, for me, don't take all those old wounds that you gained from James out on Harry. Harry is not James - do not blame him for what happened." Dumbledore spoke quietly, but his blue eyes held a warning. Snape sighed in frustration...
